Students eat from 11:15 un l 11:40 and go outside for recess from 11:40 un l 12:10. Five paid adult lunch supervisors are on duty over the lunch hour. Zohra Abdur Rahman, Audrey Wasylyshen, Cindy Mazur, Nicole Huberdeau, Melissa Feniuk and Kristy Thibodeau make up our lunch supervision team. In addi on, a secretary is available in the office and a teacher is on call in the event of an emergency.
Students from Grades 5 and 6 serve as lunch monitors in our Grades 1 to 3 classrooms. As monitors, students learn responsibility and develop leadership skills while giving back to their community. We appreciate their efforts!
Please remember to pack personal cutlery with your child’s lunch.
Expecta ons During Lunch Hour
With the goal of ensuring safety and order, students are required to adhere to the following expecta ons for behav‐iour. These expecta ons reflect two important values of our school mission statement: Respect and Responsibility. Students who are unable to abide by these expecta ons may lose the privilege of staying at school for lunch.
I will remain seated and eat my own lunch at my own place.
I will use a speaking voice when talking to others in the ea ng area.
If I need help, I will raise my hand and a lunch supervisor will come and help me.
When the lunch supervisor gives the signal for our a en on, I will stop talking and listen.
A er ea ng, I will clean my area and I will put my garbage in the garbage container, in the recycling bin or in the compost pail before leaving the lunchroom.
I will take home what belongs to me a er lunch to reuse or to recycle.
I will listen to, and cooperate with the lunch supervisors, both indoors and outdoors.

Peanut/Nut Safe School
There are several children and staff members a ending École Varennes who suffer a LIFE‐THREATENING allergy to peanut bu er, peanuts, and nuts (almonds, peanuts, cash‐ews, hazelnuts, walnuts, and pecans). Even exposure to a ny amount of these items could be poten ally serious and
life‐threatening.
We, the staff and parent community, strive to provide a safe environment for all of our students. We can all play a role in preven ng such a dangerous and frightening situa on at school. We can also help to make the school environment safer.
We therefore ask your coopera on. Please:
avoid sending all snacks or items containing peanuts/nuts with your child to school including food, snacks, or chips cooked in peanut oil.
avoid products that “may contain traces” of peanuts or nuts, or that have been prepared in a “facility that also manufactures peanut or nut products”.
always ask the classroom teacher before sending a special snack for other students in the class.
Thank you for your coopera on and your support!
Our school is involved in the Canadian MedicAlert Founda‐on’s No Child Without program. There is no cost for stu‐
dents who a end our school and are between the ages of 4 up to their 14th birthday to join MedicAlert through this pro‐gram.
If your child has a medical condi on, allergy or is required to take medica on on a regular basis, then you should consider this program. A child’s MedicAlert iden fica on can alert school staff, friends, coaches and others about your child’s medical condi on should an emergency occur.
For further informa on come to the office for a brochure or go to www.nochildwithout.ca. To register your child you will need a No Child Without brochure from the office. Harvest Around the World Supper Thursday, September 21, 2017 ‐ 5:30 pm and 6:15 pm si ngs
School Gymnasium ***Please bring an item for the St. Mary’s Road Food Bank***
École Varennes and the Family Centre are proud to present our second annual Varennes Fall Harvest Supper. This year our theme is Harvest Around the World, a celebra on of our diversity through our common love of food! This supper is an opportunity for new families to connect and returning families to reunite. It is also a celebra on of all the work done plan ng, weeding and cleaning up of our community garden at Varennes. Thanks to the WRHA Healthy Together Now grant, the Family Centre will be providing macaroni ‘n cheese, vegetarian chili, tor lla chips and watermelon at no cost to families. We are invi ng families to share ready to serve vegetables (tomatoes, cucum‐bers, carrots etc.) and fruits from their garden or local market, or to bring a ready to serve dessert that is a family favourite (no nuts/peanuts please!). These contribu ons are op onal. We will also need help with set up and take down, prepara on, cleaning and serving. We will be displaying some common vegetables, pulses or grains from around the world. Families wishing to share their favourite vegetables and recipes are invited to send an email to Paule e, our Community Liaison Worker, at paule [email protected] Please fill out one registra on form per family (forms have been sent home). TRAFFIC CIRCULATION AROUND THE SCHOOL PROPERTY
As our student popula on has grown, traffic in our parking lot and along Varennes Avenue has go en out of hand. Unsafe situa ons have been observed on numerous occasions as parents pick up and drop off their children. Families are reminded of our current pick‐up and drop‐off procedures:
Varennes Avenue is the preferred loca on for picking up or dropping off. Use the drop‐off zone at the end of the loop and keep stopping me as short as possible. Alterna vely, you may park along Varennes Avenue or near the corner of Regal Avenue and St. Thomas Road.
Our parking lot is a very busy place every morning, lunch hour and a er school. Staff need to have ac‐cess to their paid parking spot at these busy mes. To help iden fy these paid spots, signage is posted with a stall number along with the word Reserved. These parking spots cannot be used at any me un‐l a er the end of the school day. The only spots in our parking lot that are available to the public are
in the middle of the north lot or in the visitor parking spots that are clearly marked beside the school near the main entrance. There are no spaces available along any of the fences or the school for visi‐tor parking or for dropping off students. For the safety of our students, please refrain from using the parking lot for dropping off your child(ren). Take care when entering the parking lot. Slow down and be mindful of pedestrians. Check twice before backing up. Model safe walking prac ces in our school parking lot by using the sidewalk rather than cu ng across diagonally.
Consider walking or cycling as a family, or set up a walking arrangement with older students or other families.
Prior to 8:17 am, students and their families are requested to wait in the schoolyard where adult su‐pervision is provided beginning at 8:02 am. Please follow the sidewalk around the north end of the building as opposed to cu ng through the school. Alterna vely, you may choose to wait in your vehi‐cle.
A free, healthy, light breakfast is served daily from 8:02‐8:17 am in our Family Centre to students who choose to a end. The program is funded through a grant from the school division.
Be a good neighbour. Do not park in the back lanes near the school. Do not turn around in our neighbours’ driveways. The back lane is very narrow and as such is not well‐suited for dropping off or picking up. Courteous driving prac ces enhance safety.
Respect signage. Do not park in the loading zone on Varennes Avenue. Larger vehicles need a wide berth to be able to turn safely.
Your coopera on and support to implement these guidelines is impera ve for the safety of your children.
A traffic bylaw of 30 km/hr is in effect on Varennes Avenue between 7 am to 5:30 pm, Monday to Friday, from September to June.
Please remember...safety over convenience

Student Services at École Varennes
Interven on précoce en lecture (IPL) The purpose of the IPL program is to provide extra French reading support for our Grade 2 students who show the greatest need. This is based on observa ons and informal tes ng in September. IPL students receive a daily, thirty‐minute reading session with our literacy teacher, Mme Philippot. Since the stu‐dent is ini ally a struggling reader, the teacher assists by providing a structured, indivi‐dual program based on the present knowledge and needs of the student. The program con nues un l the student gains the skills, confidence, and independence as a deve‐loping reader.
Student Support Services
Our school benefits from a talented team of specialists from the Student Services Support Team (SSST). They are:
Psychologist : Alex Peniuta
Social worker: Juanita Clayton
Speech and Language Pathologist: Jeannine Wheeler
Occupa onal Therapy: Leah Zajic
Physiotherapy: Anita Walker
Referrals to the SSST clinicians are made through your child’s teacher in collabora on with the Stu‐dent Services Team at École Varennes.
Our Student Services team (Mme Bacon, Mme Schick and Mme Léger) consult and collaborate with classroom teachers to iden fy and implement learning strategies for all students. Individualized Educa onal Plans (IEPs), programming, and learning materials are developed for students with special needs. Please contact your child’s teacher or anyone on our Student Services team should you have any concerns or ques ons regarding your child’s progress.
The team also works coopera vely with school personnel and parents, to respond to the developmental needs of our students. Some programming objec ves for students include learning how to problem‐solve, making good decisions, taking responsibility for one’s behaviour and communica ng appropriately with others in a respec ul manner. Classroom work, small discussions and groups, and individual counselling are offered during the year. Parents wishing to consult a Student Services teacher to discuss their child’s needs can do by calling the school and making an appointment directly with them.

School agenda – Why is it useful? Our school offers agendas to our students from Grade 1 to Grade 8. The agenda is a communica on tool between home and school as well as a reference tool that students can access during the day to assist learning. The school agenda is:
A communica on tool that allows you to follow your child’s progress. Feel free to communicate any ques ons, concerns, and/or comments in your child’s agenda.
An informa on tool for parents to find important school informa on. A reference tool for your child for French sounds, Math and reading strategies. An organiza onal tool that helps your child to remember what he/she needs to bring to school
(i.e. library books) ; school ac vi es (i.e. field trips and school spirit days); school work that needs to be done or completed (i.e. homework and projects) as well as any extra‐curricular ac vi es.
A me management tool that helps your child learn the importance of this ability. A journal to establish their personal goals and to keep track of their learning. A tool to help support and share your child’s success in school.
**Please verify your child’s agenda daily.**
We maintain supervised crossings for the students at École Varennes every morning from 8:00 to 8:17 and every a ernoon from 3:00 to 3:15 at the crosswalks on St. Anne’s Road and St. Mary’s Road. Students work under the supervision of crossing guards LeeAnn BIsson and Kristy Thibodeau. The patrol program is coordinated by Mme Stephanie and Mme Bacon.
The safety of our students is of utmost importance. Therefore, we ask all mo‐torists to drive with cau on. Obey pa‐trollers’ flags and establish eye contact with them.
Please take me review safe crossing procedures with your child and remember to model these techniques at all mes. Insist that your child cross at the cross‐walk as opposed to jaywalking mid‐block.
École Varennes School Patrols Riel‐Evate Clothing Drive
Riel‐Evate ‐a Louis Riel School Division community‐school Founda on will be holding its 5th Free Clothing Drive on October 14 and October 15. At our most re‐cent Spring‐Summer giveaway over 125 families in our community benefi ed (many of them being new Canadians).
We will be collec ng gently used infant‐children, teen and adult winter related clothing in Septem‐ber.
Your support by sending this clothing to your school in the early fall will once again demonstrate our col‐lec ve community support for children and needy families in our community!

Second Annual Varennes Harvest Around the World Supper Celebra on ‐ A huge thank you to all our fa‐milies and students who donated their me and energy to the garden this year! With so much support from over 200 students and staff last spring, we have decided to open this free dinner up to all our Va‐rennes families on Thursday, September 21. We will have fun celebra ng vegetables harvested not only in our garden but around the world, in an cipa on of the new Canada Food Guide being released in early 2018. Families interested in a ending must please return the registra on form by Friday, September 15 to give us enough me to prepare. Special thanks to the WRHA for their Healthy Together Now grant making
this evening possible! We are planning our garden clean up a week later on Friday, September 29 beginning at 8:30AM if the weather cooperates. Any parents inte‐rested in gardening are welcome to join in, along with the classes who will come out to par cipate in pu ng the garden to bed for winter. Please consider saving clip‐pings of your favourite plants to transplant and donate to our garden next spring. Your child loves knowing he/she has contributed something from your personal gar‐den! A number of students helped harvest red, orange and yellow cherry and grape tomatoes which were already shared with 10 classrooms! This Photo by Unknown Au‐
Give and Take Community Response – I have clothing, toys and backpacks to give away thanks to the Family Centre, families at school, Colleen Mayer, MLA for St. Vital and Telus. If you are a family in need of any of these items, please call Paule e confiden ally at 204‐253‐1375 to set up an appointment for pick up. Due to minimal space, remaining toys and clothing will be donated to the St. Mary’s Road Food Bank Bou que at the end of the month. Watch for volunteer opportuni es at the food bank for your Grades 5‐8 children which will begin in October.
We are also pu ng out an appeal again this year to have regular volunteers to help with baking muffins and preparing pancakes ahead for the morning breakfast program. Our students will also be volunteering in the kitchen at school to assist with breakfast, snacks and lunches. Our numbers reached upwards of 80 ‐ 100 students/morning last year which was a significant increase from the past. We are happy to offer a warm and welcoming hello to students first thing as a so landing to their day. Some come because they are unable to eat first thing in the morning for many reasons, some come to visit with friends and some come for an early morning hug. We are following the divisional guidelines again for nutri on and will be adding more fun recipes to our menu this year. Mme Kris ne was already baking tasty muffins this week for our start in the library on Monday! Breakfast runs from 8AM un l the bell rings at 8:17. Please remind your children that if they leave the library before the bell rings, they are expected to go outside un l the bell as there is no supervision in the hallways. We thank Louis Riel School Division, the Nutri on Council of Manitoba and the PC Children’s Charity for their grants this year in making all our fun, healthy and tasty food programs possible! Special thanks to Krista Muller for her help with finding nutri on grants and her bread contribu ons in the past. We are so grateful to work with such a generous community!
