Overweight Pets - Addressing an Epidemic

Did you know a 20lb. pug is equivalent to a 161 lb.5’4” woman or 188 lb. 5’9” man? That is 11% overweight for apug. We know that an estimated54% of U.S. cats and dogs areoverweight or obese. If you arepart of the 22% of pet owners indenial about your pet’s weight, hopefully you have come to therealization that a change mustbe made or your dog will mostlikely pay the price. Overeating, eating unhealthy foods, and notexercising is a deadlycombination; so let’s make achange.-Problem: Overeating

Some pets willeat a whole bag of pet food ifyou let them. They inhale theirkibble and then look at you like,“is that all?” In cases like this, free feeding (filling the bowl andletting your pet eat when hewants) does not work. You needto measure out the appropriateamount of food stated on thefood bag or use as instructed byyour veterinarian.

The number twoculprit in weight gain is fattywet food. Portions of wet foodshould be monitored closely. Justa few extra scoops here or therecan easily add 10 extra poundsto a pet. However, while wetfood can help pack on thepounds, an excess of treats isthe number one problem in mostoverweight cases. A treat afterbreakfast, a treat for lunch, atreat before dinner, and then atreat for dessert. Believe it ornot, your pet can go a lot longerwithout eating than you can.

Depending on his activity level,he doesn’t need more than twomeals a day, let alone snacks inbetween.-Solution: Limit food intake

Putting your peton a diet can be difficult. Theylook at you with big sad eyes andwhine or meow like they arestarving. While this is hard toresist, stay strong! If you feelthe urge to feed your pet moreoften than once or twice a day, break up his normal meal intosmaller portions that you cangive throughout the day. If youwant to give a treat, only give 1treat per day, not 3 or more. Youcan also use pieces of his dailykibble rations as treats.-Problem: Unhealthy eating

Even if you do cutback on the food and treats, doyou actually know what you arefeeding your pet? Mostconsumers don’t even payattention to what is in their ownfood let alone their pet’s food. Ifyou read the ingredient labelyou might be surprised to find alot of pet foods (and treats) arepacked with fillers, calories, and‘bad’ fats. While these dog foodsare the cheapest alternative(due to the cheap ingredients)they are not the only option forfeeding your dog.-Solution: Change your pet’sfood

Your pet'sveterinarian will be your bestsource of information whenchoosing the right diet for yourpet. Your pet's age, generalhealth, body condition, andactivity level should all beconsidered when selecting anappropriate diet. There are evenveterinary Prescription Dietsthat can be used as part of atreatment plan for specifichealth conditions.

If your pet is stillhungry after you begin feeding adiet for weight loss, you can usevegetables to help satisfy yourpet's hunger. Many pet's love

their veggies!-Problem: Lack of exerciseMost dogs were

born and bred to work but intoday’s society, though few areused for work like they once did.Despite these societal changes, dog’s still need exercise and itmeans more in a dog’s life thanjust avoiding weight gain.

Exercise doesmany things. It strengthens theimmune system, increases bloodcirculation, reduces the risk ofheart disease and otherillnesses, reduces stress and thelikelihood of depression, keepspets from becoming obese whichcould result in depression and/ordiabetes, and reduces boredomand anxiety. This helps reducebad behaviors such as chewing, digging, and excessive barking.Solution: Daily exercise

Exercise makes ahappy, healthy, and well-balanced pet. It’s up to you toget in the habit of making surehe gets that regular exercisebecause he can’t do that forhimself. A dog's need to workand exercise can be met bytraining your dog in obedience, agility, flyball, or otherperformance events.

If you want tochange things in your pet’seating habits, you do not have todo it alone. Besides yourveterinarian, other organiztionscan provide support. Groups likethe Association for Pet ObesityPrevention provide online toolsto help pet owners make achange and gain control of thesituation. Check out theAssociation for Pet ObesityPrevention website and join thefight against pet obesity.

The winterholidays are fun times for thefamily but can be hazardous forpets.

These tips willhelp keep them safe:

Christmas treesbring holiday cheer but potentialhazards for pets. Tree watermay contain fertilizer andbacteria that, if ingested, canupset a pet’s stomach.

A teething puppywill chew on electrical cords andcan be shocked or electrocuted.Be sure to tape the wires to awall and tuck the extra cordbehind furniture.

Tinsel is veryenticing to dogs and catsbecause of its sparklingreflection and the stringlikebehavior. Unfortunately, it canget stuck on your pet’s tongue, become ingested and causeintestinal agony and lifethreatening gastrointestinal (GI)blockages.

Ice-melt salt andother chemicals used to melt icefrom sidewalks can irritate yourdog’s paws. They are also toxicif ingested.

Antifreeze is anextremely dangerous chemicalto be aware of. It is an odorlessfluid with a sweet taste thatdogs in particular have afondness for—it is a majordanger to a dog exploring agarage or street where cars areparked. Poisoning

is swift; around a tablespoon isdeadly to an average-sized dog,and the mortality rate is about88 percent. Always mop up anyspills the instant they happenand be aware of puddles nearparked cars. Sprinkling the areawith an absorbent material suchas sand, cat litter, woodshavings or sawdust will preventthe dog from licking the spotwhere the spill or leak occurred.

Think twice beforeleaving a bowl of chocolates onthe table for guests. Chocolate ispoisonous to many animals andthe temptation may be too hardfor pets to resist. The less sweetthe chocolate, the more toxic itcould be due to the caffeine andtheobromine it contains.Chocolate poisoning may causevomiting, diarrhea, seizures, hyperactivity and increasedthirst, urination and heart rate.

Do not feed yourdog leftover meat bones. Youmay think you are giving him atreat that he will enjoy, but thereality is they are dangerous.Meat bones are easily chewedinto sharp splinters that canlodge in the GI tract and may

cause esophageal or intestinallaceration, or partial orcomplete obstructions. Neverinduce vomiting if your pet hasswallowed any bone that cansplinter because it may cause anesophageal laceration.

Also, make sureyour pets are prepared for thedrastic drop in temperatures.Outside animals need wellinsulated shelters with straw, with the opening facing awayfrom the wind, either east orsouth..

Water bowls arealso likely to freeze. Metal bowlsare more likely to freeze thanplastic. Make sure water ischecked very frequently and geta water bowl heater to allowyour dog to always have accessto water and prevent iceformation.

When animalscome in from playing in thesnow, make sure to clean thesnowballs off their feet. Packedice between the pads can causeserious irritaion or injury.

Increase theamount of food given to youroutside pets, and be certain thatit is adequate in quality. Petsneed 15% more calories forevery 20 degree drop intemperature.

The holidays canbe very stressful and busy.Watch your pets during theseason to avoid the added stressof a pet emergency expense.
