October Synod on Marriage I want to call to your attention once again this week that the Bishop has asked us for input to give to the Synod on Marriage and the Family that will meet in Rome this coming October. Marriage and Family are extremely important values for all of us. But there are many difficulties in our lives and our cultures that the Church needs to respond to. You can be of significant help in his effort. Pope Francis and the Synod Fathers have sought this input from all members of the Church, all levels, all walks of life and life experience. A questionnaire has been cre-ated that I ask you to fill out on line in the next week. It is available in both English and Spanish and can be found at: www.oakdiocese.org/survey. Please give this your attention. The participation of all is needed.

Dear Parishioners,

A Prayer for Lent The glory of these forty days

We celebrate with songs of praise; For Christ, by whom all things were made,

Himself has fasted and has prayed. Alone and fasting, Moses saw

The loving God who gave the law; And to Elijah, fasting, came

The steeds and chariots of flame. So Daniel trained his mystic sight, Delivered from the lions’ might;

And John, the bridegroom’s friend, became The herald of Messiah’s name.

Then grant us, Lord, like them to be Full oft in fast and prayer with thee;

Our spirits strengthen with thy grace, And give us joy to see thy face. O Father, Son, and Spirit blest,

To thee be every prayer addressed, Who art in threefold name adored,

From age to age, the only Lord. -Pope St. Gregory the Great

Join the parish community in praying the Stations of the Cross and Benediction on all the Fridays of Lent at 7:30p.m. We will again bring out our “Pennies for the Poor” jar and invite the children of the parish to place their pennies in the jar when the collection for the adults is taking place. Let us pray that this Lent will strengthen us in our Faith. Yours in Christ, Fr. Mario L. Borges

Next Liturgy Meeting: February 19, 7:00p.m. St. Thomas Room, Parish Hall—All are welcome.

Confirmation Swimming Against the Tide

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MEET THE CANDIDATE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - As we are sure you have seen over the past weeks that we, at Transfiguration, are blessed with the most wonderful teenagers in the world! In fact, you may have the opportunity to meet some of them in person if you are able to attend our parish Crab Feed this weekend where they will be serving the food. As we celebrate the feast of St. Valentine this Saturday, we thought that we would share with you two of our real SWEETHEARTS! ALLISON ANN PALAZZOTTO is the younger of the two Palazzotto children, her brother, Dominic, was confirmed here in 2012. In addition to Dom, Allison shares her home with Moose, the family dog. Allison, at 15, is a Sophomore at Castro Valley High where she enjoys her English class. Other Allison favorites include: TV: American Horror Story; Literature: The Fault in our Stars; Food: “hot Fries” (as opposed to cold fries??) and Favorite place to eat: My House (good job Lisa, keep frying those fries!) In her free time Allison can be found on a court, as she plays volleyball year ‘round. She also enjoys hanging out with her friends, particularly Molly, her BFF. So, other than her beautiful smile, what makes Allison a “Sweetheart”? Well, when asked of the thing for which she is most proud Allison answered, “I care about people and their feelings.” And, that Care has been abundantly obvious in our Religious Education Program over the years. Thank you Allison! EMILY HANH HOANG is another beautiful girl with a wonderful smile. Emily is the oldest of the two Hoang children, in addi-tion to little brother, Timothy, Emily also shares her home with Boots her cat. At 15, Emily is also CVHS Sophomore who finds it difficult to name a favorite class. Emily’s interests are varied, she is a member of the Red Cross Club in school, she is an accom-plished pianist, studying under Patti Mijalski and playing for the past eight years, AND she is a Black Belt in Karate! In fact, Emily lists her Karate teacher as the person who has most influenced her life. In her free time Emily likes to, “eat and sleep” - well de-served! When asked her favorite food and place to eat, Emily told us, “any Japanese restaurant” this girl, like a great number of our candidates, is a Sushi Lover. And when vacation time rolls around Emily would love a trip to France and Italy or a visit to Hawaii to watch the sun set. These two Sweetheart, Sophomore Girls are WONDERFUL human beings and we are very blessed to have them as members of our Confirmation Class of 2016!

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#68 Challenges to inculturating the faith The Christian substratum of certain peoples – most of all in the West – is a living reality. Here we find, especially among the most needy, a moral resource which preserves the values of an authentic Christian humanism. Seeing reality with the eyes of faith, we cannot fail to acknowledge what the Holy Spirit is sowing. It would show a lack of trust in his free and unstinting activity to think that authentic Christian values are absent where great numbers of people have received baptism and express their faith and solidarity with others in a variety of ways. This means more than acknowledging occasional “seeds of the word”, since it has to do with an authentic Christian faith which has its own expressions and means of showing its relationship to the Church. The immense importance of a culture marked by faith cannot be overlooked; before the onslaught of con-temporary secularism an evangelized culture, for all its limits, has many more resources than the mere sum total of believers. An evangelized popular cul-ture contains values of faith and solidarity capable of encouraging the development of a more just and be-lieving society, and possesses a particular wisdom which ought to be gratefully acknowledged. Fr. Terry’s Remarks— When we gaze on our world and society and see so much misery, we can easily become depressed and think all is lost. Hold on. We believe in God. We believe in Jesus Christ. We believe in His Redemption. We can't give up, Jesus wouldn't allow it. I love Christmas and Easter when our Churches are so packed that our regulars can't find their pews. It’s a constant reminder that the faith is out there in the busy and commercialized world guiding and consoling the hearts and souls of so many of God's beloved sons and daughters. I BELIEVE! WE BELIEVE! are not empty phrases, they are full of the infinite power and love of Al-mighty God. We can, we will evangelize our con-temporary and secularized world with the wisdom and power of God.
