It’s no surprise that so many people are

exposed to ballet because their parent

or grandparent brought them to see

The Nutcracker when they were young.

Perhaps you are here tonight with your

parent or young one, or simply with

friends to enjoy the festive nature of this

enchanting ballet. Whatever brought you,

we’re thrilled you are here and embracing

the holiday mood with this delightful,

very Canadian version from the Royal

Winnipeg Ballet. It’s amazing that this story

ballet — first performed over 120 years

ago in Russia — has become a steadfast

icon in the dance milieu. Many star dancers

get their first major roles in Nutcracker,

and hundreds of children from ballet

schools have their initial experience

onstage with this production. And of

course Tchaikovsky’s timeless music,

which is synonymous with this time of year.

We welcome our dear partner Canada’s

Royal Winnipeg Ballet and extend to all of

Casse-Noisette avec un parent ou un grand-

parent. Peut-être êtes-vous justement de

ceux qui êtes ici ce soir avec un parent ou un

enfant, ou encore avec des amis qui adorent

tout comme vous le côté festif et enchanteur

de cette œuvre. Peu importe! Nous sommes

version toute canadienne du célèbre ballet.

Il y a de quoi s’émerveiller quand on pense

que ce ballet narratif — exécuté pour la

Message from Artistic Director Mot du directeur artistiqueThe story of a young girl’s Christmas has

its source in the great German storyteller

E.T.A. Hoffmann’s eccentric tale The

Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Alexander

Dumas’ sweeter retelling of the tale

inspired Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov to

choreograph Nutcracker at the Maryinsky

Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1892.

Since its premiere, Nutcracker has become

one of the most enduring ballets of all time,

performed more often than any other.

Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s Nutcracker

retains the flavour of the original’s German

and Russian heritage but is set on our

continent at the turn of the 20th century.

By this, we aim to honour some of North

America’s unique cultural and festive

traditions. Nutcracker is for the child in all

of us. Set to Tchaikovsky’s glorious music,

with its wonderfully danceable melodies,

the story speaks to those who believe in

the power of the imagination as well as in

the spirit of Christmas.

Casse-Noisette raconte le Noël d’une

jeune fille. Cette belle histoire a pour

origine un conte étrange intitulé

Le Casse-Noisette et le Roi des souris,

imaginé par E.T.A. Hoffmann, le grand

écrivain allemand. Cependant, c’est la

version plus tendre écrite par Alexandre

Dumas qui a inspiré Marius Petipa et

Lev Ivanov lorsqu’ils ont chorégraphié le

ballet Casse-Noisette au Théâtre Mariinski

à Saint-Pétersbourg (Russie) en 1892.

Depuis sa création, le ballet Casse-Noisette

a battu tous les records de durée et est

interprété plus souvent que n’importe

quelle autre œuvre.

Le Casse-Noisette du Royal Winnipeg

Ballet reste fidèle à la tradition allemande

et russe du ballet original, mais l’histoire

est transposée sur notre continent, au

tournant du XXe siècle. Nous avons pensé

que ce serait une façon de mettre en valeur

quelques-unes des traditions culturelles

et festives tout à fait particulières de

l’Amérique du Nord. Casse-Noisette

s’adresse à l’enfant qui est en chacun de

nous. Ce ballet réglé sur la somptueuse

musique de Tchaïkovski, avec ses

merveilleuses mélodies qui appellent à la

danse, nous raconte une histoire à laquelle

seront sensibles toutes les personnes qui

croient au pouvoir de l’imagination et à

l’esprit de Noël.

Versatility, technical excellence and a

captivating style are the trademarks of

Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, qualities

that have garnered both critical and

audience acclaim. These qualities keep

the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in demand as

it presents more than 100 performances

every season.

Founded in 1939 by Gweneth Lloyd

and Betty Farrally, the Royal Winnipeg

Ballet holds the double distinction of being

Canada’s premier ballet company and

the longest continuously operating ballet

company in North America. In 1953, the

Company received its royal title, the first

granted under the reign of Her Majesty

Queen Elizabeth II.

In 1958, Arnold Spohr was appointed

Artistic Director. Under his direction the

Royal Winnipeg Ballet grew and flourished

to take its place among the world’s

internationally renowned companies. To

further the Company’s development, a

professional school was created in 1970

under the direction of David Moroni. Today

two-thirds of the Company’s dancers are

graduates of the school. On March 7, 1996,

André Lewis was named Artistic Director

and has been with the RWB ever since.

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet began to

tour Canada in 1945 and completed its

first American tour in 1954. Today, the

Company spends 15 or more weeks a year

on the road, performing in centres large

and small. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is

compact in size, with 25 dancers, a small

but effective production crew and a semi-

trailer that carries approximately 55,000

pounds of equipment. For full-length

ballets, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet travels

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet has

performed in the United States, South

America, Europe, the Middle East, Russia,

Japan, Asia, Mexico and in every province

of Canada. Throughout its history, the

Royal Winnipeg Ballet has been a dance

leader, recording innumerable firsts. It

developed the concept of the regional

ballet festival in the 1940s and was the first

western company to perform in Cuba after

the revolution. It received Gold Medals at

the International Ballet Festival in Paris

in 1968 and that same year became the

first Canadian company to tour Russia and

Czechoslovakia.

This year the Royal Winnipeg Ballet

celebrates its 76th season with the return

of some of its most treasured repertoires

including Giselle, A Cinderella Story, and

Peter Pan. It also toured Moulin Rouge® –

The Ballet in Europe with stops in Germany,

the Netherlands and Italy.

The company opens the holiday

celebration with its acclaimed Nutcracker

at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa,

before returning home to Winnipeg for

eight performances. In January, the

company goes on tour with its 75th season

milestone work, Going Home Star – Truth

and Reconciliation with its national debut

in Ottawa followed with stops in Kingston,

Burlington, Toronto, Brandon, Regina,

Saskatoon, Banff, Kelowna, Victoria,

Nanaimo and Vancouver. The RWB will

also feature a mixed programme from

Peter Quanz’ Q Dance and from the RWB

School’s Professional Division in Spotlight.

Lorsqu’elle présente des ballets intégraux,

SynopsisSetting Christmas, 1913 in a large Canadian home.

It’s a prosperous time in a prosperous city

whose population has been swollen by new

arrivals. The First World War is still half a

year away.

Overture‘Tis the night before Christmas and all

through Clara’s house, everything and

everyone is stirring — even the mice! The

people inside are getting ready for the big

Christmas party — cooking and wrapping

and dressing and fussing. Outside,

neighbourhood boys play hockey on the

street while friends and family start to

arrive, carrying armloads of presents and

anticipating a marvelous event.

ACT IScene I – Clara’s BedroomTwelve-year old Clara is oblivious to all

the noise and confusion. She’s dreaming

in front of the mirror in her bedroom,

practicing her ballet steps. She wants to be

perfect when she dances for her glamorous

Aunt Josephine, a singer who has travelled

all the way from Montreal on the train.

Mama interrupts. “Where is the bow

that I made for your hair?” she demands.

“And where is Dieter?” Clara’s younger

brother leaps out of a large armoire,

brandishing his sword. Grandmother

Marguerite finds her way to the bedroom

and manages to calm everyone down.

L’histoireL’histoire se déroule en 1913, pendant les

Fêtes, dans une grande maison canadienne.

L’économie va bien et la ville, portée par

cette prospérité, s’est beaucoup agrandie

avec l’arrivée de nouveaux immigrants.

Il reste encore plusieurs mois avant le

déclenchement de la Première Guerre

mondiale.

OuvertureC’est la fête de Noël et, dans la maison de

Clara, tout le monde s’active — même les

souris! À l’intérieur de la maison, on s’affaire

aux préparatifs des Fêtes : on cuisine, on

emballe des cadeaux, on s’habille et on

règle mille et un petits détails. Dehors, les

garçons du voisinage jouent au hockey dans

la rue, tandis que les amis et la parenté

commencent à arriver, portant dans leurs

bras de nombreux paquets et se réjouissant

à l’avance de la merveilleuse fête qui

les attend.

ACTE IScène I – La chambre de ClaraLa jeune Clara, 12 ans, semble ignorer

tout ce bruit et cette agitation. Elle est

dans sa chambre, où elle rêve et répète

ses pas de ballet devant le miroir. Elle veut

que tout soit parfait lorsqu’elle dansera

devant sa tante Joséphine, une chanteuse

extrêmement élégante qui est venue en

train de Montréal.

Elle entend tout à coup la voix de

Maman : « Clara! Mais, où est le ruban que

j’avais préparé pour attacher tes cheveux?

Et où est Dieter? » Le jeune frère de Clara

sort soudainement d’une grande armoire

en brandissant son épée. Grand-mère

Marguerite arrive dans la chambre et calme


has planned, not even the Christmas tree

has been delivered. “But Mr. Drosselmeier

promised to bring a tree!” She runs off

to check on things downstairs while

Grandmother shows the children some

favourite photographs of Christmas past.

Scene II – The Christmas PartyMama, Papa and the butler are looking

at the empty space in the big living room

where the tree should be. What kind of

a Christmas party is this going to be?

Among the guests filling the room is Aunt

Josephine. Resplendent in furs, she makes

a grand entrance with her fiancé, Edouard,

dashing in his military uniform.

At last! Mr. Drosselmeier carries in a

tree. Clara suddenly feels shy when he

introduces her to his Grandnephew, Julien.

In no time at all, the tree is decorated

and Clara has the honour of putting the

star on the very top. Suddenly, the first-

ever electric Christmas lights illuminate

the tree!

Mr. Drosselmeier hands out his

presents; all enchanting. Dieter’s army of

toy soldiers has now been augmented by

Mounted Police.

Mr. Drosselmeier’s masterpiece goes

to Clara – a beautifully hand-crafted

Nutcracker.

During Christmas dinner, Clara slips

away to admire her Nutcracker and

imagines that he comes alive to dance with

her. The doorbell rings a bear scurries in,

admires the tree and dances happily with

the Christmas toys.

The party breaks up in a flurry of

dancing, silliness and romance. “Good

night everyone! Merry Christmas!”

Les choses ne se déroulent pas comme

Maman l’avait prévu. Même l’arbre de Noël

n’est pas encore arrivé. « Et pourtant,

M. Drosselmeier avait promis d’apporter

un arbre! » Elle quitte la chambre pour

retourner en bas vérifier ce qui se passe.

Grand-mère montre aux enfants quelques

photos prises il y a quelques années au

cours d’une fête de Noël.

Scène II – La fête de NoëlMaman, Papa et le majordome observent

l’espace vide où devrait se trouver l’arbre

de Noël dans le grand salon. Sans arbre, de

quoi aura l’air la fête de Noël? Les invités

commencent à arriver et voilà justement

tante Joséphine qui fait une entrée

remarquée, emmitouflée dans son manteau

de fourrure, en compagnie de son fiancé,

Édouard, tout fringant dans son uniforme

militaire.

Et voilà qu’arrive enfin M. Drosselmeier,

apportant un arbre de Noël. Clara se sent

soudain tout intimidée lorsqu’il la présente

à son petit-neveu Julien.

En un tournemain, on décore le sapin de

Noël et Clara a l’honneur de placer l’étoile

au sommet de l’arbre. Comme par magie,

la toute première guirlande électrique fait

scintiller l’arbre de tous ses feux!

M. Drosselmeier distribue des cadeaux

magnifiques. Dieter reçoit des cavaliers

de la Gendarmerie royale du Canada qui

viennent augmenter l’armée de soldats qu’il

possède déjà. À Clara, M. Drosselmeier

réserve son chef-d’œuvre : un casse-

noisette qu’il a sculpté lui-même.

Pendant le dîner de Noël, Clara quitte

la table pour regarder son casse-noisette

et elle imagine qu’il prend vie et l’invite

à danser. On sonne à la porte et un ours

entre, admire l’arbre et danse gaiement

avec les jouets de Noël.

La fête tire à sa fin, les invités dansent,


Scene III – BedtimeClara falls asleep but is soon awakened by

the terrifying Mouse King who is about to

steal her beloved Nutcracker. The clock

strikes midnight.

Scene IV – The Living RoomMoonlight shimmers through the window

and the room starts to change into

something strange and new. Clara finds Mr.

Drosselmeier who tries to convince her that

she has nothing to fear. Suddenly before

her very eyes, the room and the Christmas

tree begin to grow.

Clara is attacked by scurrying mice

while trying to save her Nutcracker. The

Nutcracker comes alive and chases the

mice away. Dieter’s squadron of toy

soldiers and Mounted Police are now a

living regiment and battle fiercely against

the menacing mice with cannons, swords

and every ounce of cleverness they can

muster. The battle takes a turn for the

worse when Fritz is wounded and the

Nutcracker is shot by the Mouse King while

attempting to help Dieter.

Scene V – A Magical ForestFinally, Clara defeats the Mouse King and

begs Mr. Drosselmeier to help her wounded

Nutcracker. It’s only after Clara professes

her love for the Nutcracker that Mr.

Drosselmeier can bring him to life again.

The Nutcracker was Julien all along and he

is now a handsome prince. They walk hand

in hand into a magical pine forest, dancing

under a sky filled with stars and the

Northern Lights. Snow begins to fall. As the

snow falls, twelve polar bear cubs and one

font des plaisanteries et s’embrassent.

« Bonne nuit à tous! Joyeux Noël! »

Scène III – L’heure du coucherClara s’endort, mais elle est bientôt

réveillée par l’affreux Roi des souris qui

tente de voler son cher casse-noisette.

L’horloge sonne minuit.

Scène IV – Le salonPar la fenêtre, la lune éclaire le salon et la

pièce commence à se transformer, prenant

une allure étrange et nouvelle. Clara

rencontre M. Drosselmeier qui tente de la

rassurer et la convaincre qu’elle n’a rien à

craindre. Soudain, sous ses yeux, la pièce

s’agrandit et l’arbre de Noël commence à

prendre de plus en plus d’ampleur.

Des souris se ruent en trottinant

pour attaquer Clara alors qu’elle tente de

sauver son casse-noisette. C’est alors que

Casse-Noisette prend vie et chasse les

souris. L’escadron de soldats et les cavaliers

de la Gendarmerie royale de Dieter sont

devenus de véritables soldats qui déploient

leurs canons, leurs épées et toute leur

science du combat pour lutter farouchement

contre les souris qui les attaquent. La bataille

semble perdue lorsque le Roi des souris

blesse Fritz et tire sur Casse-Noisette qui

tentait de délivrer Dieter.

Scène V – Une forêt enchantéeFinalement, Clara met le Roi des souris

en déroute et supplie M. Drosselmeier de

venir en aide à Casse-Noisette. Mais c’est

seulement après qu’elle a avoué son amour

pour Casse-Noisette que M. Drosselmeier

ramène celui-ci à la vie. On découvre alors

que Casse-Noisette est en fait Julien ayant

pris l’allure d’un élégant prince. Clara et lui

marchent main dans la main dans une forêt

de pins enchantée, dansant sous un ciel

rempli d’étoiles et d’aurores boréales. Alors


big bear playfully wander into the forest.

The polar bears are happy to find Clara and

the Nutcracker Prince there, and bid them

farewell as the Nutcracker Prince and Clara

depart to the Sugar Plum Fairy’s kingdom.

ACT II Scene 1 – The KingdomThe Nutcracker Prince and Clara travel to

the Sugar Plum Fairy’s kingdom, where

adorable little angels along with Mr.

Drosselmeier help with the preparations

for their arrival. The Sugar Plum Fairy

gives Clara and Prince Julien a very warm

welcome and an elaborate ceremony

ensues to honour them. Wonderful dances

from many different lands and many more

delights are performed, reminding Clara

of all the people arriving every day in their

country.

In a beautiful pas de deux, the Prince

has the great honour of dancing with Clara.

She simply floats in time to the music. In a

grand farewell gesture, all the inhabitants

of the magical land gather to bid Clara a

happy journey home.

Scene II – Early MorningWhen Clara wakes up, she is happy to be in

her own bedroom. The Nutcracker stands

proudly next to her. Remembering her

dream, she’s relieved to see her big brother

Fritz striding into the room, alive and well,

and announcing, “It’s snowing!”

They bundle up, go outside and watch

the snow fluttering down. It was the best

Christmas ever!

oursons blancs accompagnés d’un grand

ours polaire gambadent dans la forêt. Les

ours sont heureux de rencontrer Clara et le

prince Casse-Noisette, et leur souhaitent

bon voyage lorsque le prince emmène Clara

au royaume de la fée Dragée.

ACTE II Scène I – Le royaumeLe prince Casse-Noisette emmène

Clara au royaume de la fée Dragée où

M. Drosselmeier, accompagné d’adorables

petits anges, aide aux préparatifs en vue

de leur arrivée. La fée Dragée accueille

chaleureusement Clara et le prince Julien, et

les convie à une élégante cérémonie donnée

en leur honneur. Des artistes de nombreux

pays viennent interpréter de merveilleuses

danses qui rappellent à Clara tous les

immigrants qui arrivent chaque jour dans

son propre pays.

Au cours d’un magnifique pas de deux, le

prince Julien a le grand honneur de danser

avec Clara. Elle se laisse flotter sur les ailes

de la musique. Dans un grand geste d’adieu,

tous les habitants de ce pays enchanté se

rassemblent pour souhaiter à Clara un bon

voyage de retour.

Scène II – De bonne heure le matinLorsque Clara se réveille, elle est heureuse

de se retrouver dans sa propre chambre. Le

casse-noisette monte fièrement la garde à

côté d’elle. Se rappelant son rêve, elle est

soulagée de voir son grand frère Fritz entrer

dans la chambre, vivant et bien portant, pour

lui annoncer : « Il neige! »

Ils s’habillent chaudement pour aller

dehors regarder les flocons qui tombent

doucement. C’est le plus beau de tous

les noëls!

André LewisArtistic Director

André Lewis has spent the majority of

his career with Canada’s Royal Winnipeg

Ballet, accepting the position of Artistic

Director in 1996. Since then, Lewis has

been the driving force behind the new and

innovative works that have dramatically

rejuvenated the RWB. A native of Gatineau,

Québec, André Lewis began his dance

training in Ottawa before being accepted

into the Professional Division at the Royal

Winnipeg Ballet School in 1975. He joined

the Company in 1979 where he enjoyed

an accomplished career as a dancer for

over ten years. Lewis has commissioned

numerous blockbuster ballets such as

Mark Godden’s Dracula in 1998 and Moulin

Rouge® – The Ballet in 2009. He was

instrumental in the 1999 creation of a new

Nutcracker for the Company and in 2002,

Lewis brought to Winnipeg the thrilling and

passionate Carmina Burana by Argentinean

choreographer Mauricio Wainrot. In 2012,

Lewis and Atlanta Ballet Artistic Director

John McFall co-commissioned a new

creation by celebrated choreographer

Twyla Tharp titled The Princess & The

Goblin. In 2013, Lewis commissioned

another outstanding new creation in

conjunction with New York choreographer

Lila York. The full-length ballet The

Handmaid’s Tale was a bold adaptation of

the novel of the same name by Governor

General Award-winning Canadian author,

Margaret Atwood. In addition to his

position as artistic director, Lewis is a

sought-after ballet instructor and has guest

taught throughout Europe and in Japan.

Casse-Noisette présenté pour la première

fois par la compagnie en 1999, et en 2002,

il présente à Winnipeg Carmina Burana,

spectacle fascinant et fougueux du

chorégraphe argentin Mauricio Wainrot.

En 2012, M. Lewis s’associe à John McFall,

directeur artistique de l’Atlanta Ballet, pour

commander à la célèbre chorégraphe

Twyla Tharp une nouvelle création intitulée

The Princess & The Goblin. En 2013, il

commande une autre pièce remarquable à

la chorégraphe new-yorkaise Lila York.

Le ballet intégral The Handmaid’s Tale

est une adaptation audacieuse du roman

Galina YordanovaChoreographer

Madame Yordanova trained for nine years

at Baku in the USSR and for five years

with the Bolshoi Ballet where she received

her teacher’s diploma in 1960. She held

diplomas in Choreography and Teacher

Training from the G.I.T.S. in Moscow. In

1960, Madame Yordanova was Ballet

Mistress of the Varna Norodna Opera

in Bulgaria where she staged a number

of classics including Romeo and Juliet,

Raymonda, Le Corsaire, Coppélia, Les

Sylphides, Giselle and Nutcracker. She

has also worked extensively with the

Ballet der Deutschen Oper, Berlin and with

companies in Madrid and Valencia, Spain

and in Nagoya and Kyoto, Japan.

In 1980, Madame Yordanova began to

spend a portion of each year in Winnipeg,

teaching at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet

School’s Professional Division Summer

Session. Her expert teaching of the

Russian style was an important component

of the development of the teaching style of

the school.

In 1995, she joined the artistic faculty

as resident Guest Teacher. She worked

extensively with the RWB dancers to

prepare them for the Company’s 1987

premiere of Swan Lake, which she staged

in the Russian style. In 1990, Madame

Yordanova shared her expertise and talent

in the staging of the RWB’s premiere of La

Bayadère, Act II, featuring members of the

Company together with young artists from

the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School.

In celebration of the 25th Anniversary

of the RWB School in 1996, she staged

Don Quixote, with the school’s entire

student body performing alongside

Company members who were school

graduates in the lead roles.

For the RWB’s 1999/2000 season,

Galina YordanovaChorégraphe

Galina Yordanova a étudié pendant neuf ans

à Bakou, dans l’URSS d’alors, et pendant

cinq ans au Ballet Bolchoï, où elle a obtenu

son diplôme d’enseignante en 1960. Elle

détient des diplômes en chorégraphie et en

formation des enseignants du G.I.T.S. de

Moscou. Dès 1960, Mme Yordanova exerce

les fonctions de maîtresse de ballet à

l’Opéra Varna Norodna en Bulgarie, où elle

monte plusieurs classiques, notamment

Roméo et Juliette, Raymonda, Le Corsaire,

Coppélia, Les Sylphides, Giselle et Casse-

Noisette. Elle travaille également beaucoup

Menon, choreographed a new version

of Nutcracker for the Company which

premiered in Ottawa at the National Arts

Centre on December 2, 1999.

Nina MenonChoreographer

Nina Menon joined the Royal Winnipeg

Ballet after graduating from the Royal

Conservatory of The Hague and the Royal

Winnipeg Ballet School’s Professional

Division. As a member of the corps de

ballet she danced numerous soloist roles

and in 1990 she made her choreographic

debut at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s

choreographic workshop. The success

of this ballet and others, plus the

commissioning by the Royal Winnipeg

Ballet of her popular ballet La Soif, led

Artistic Director André Lewis to appoint

Nina Menon Resident Choreographer.

Highlights of Ms. Menon’s residency

include Drunken Butterflies, a ballet

choreographed to polish composer Henryk

Mikolaj Gorecki. This ballet explores the

life of an immigrant family through dance

and film. In 1999 she collaborated with

Galina Yordanova on the Royal Winnipeg

Ballet’s new version of Nutcracker which

premiered in Ottawa at the National Arts

Centre. In the same season Nina Menon

shared with the world her East Indian

ancestral roots by creating a ballet to The

Gita Govinda. Collaborating with composer

Mychael Danna (Felicia’s Journey, Monsoon

Wedding, Vanity Fair) Ms. Menon’s ballet,

The Gitagovinda, told an ancient story from

her personal connection with the poem.

The sacred poem was passed down to Nina

by her grandmother.

During her residency, Nina Menon

choreographed several ballets for the

ce ballet et par d’autres créations de

Mme Menon, parmi lesquelles le ballet

La Soif – chaleureusement accueilli par le

public –, que lui avait commandé le RWB,

le directeur artistique André Lewis la

nomme chorégraphe en résidence.

Pendant sa résidence, Mme Menon crée

notamment Drunken Butterflies, ballet

réglé sur une musique du compositeur

polonais Henryk Mikolaj Gorecki. Cette

œuvre explore la vie d’une famille

d’immigrants à travers la danse et le

cinéma. En 1999, Mme Menon collabore

Recreational Division. She now lives in

Montreal with life partner Mark Godden

and their two sons. She teaches ballet at

Sheila Parkins Dance Academy and several

Montessori schools. In her spare time she

loves to garden.

Paul DaigleCostume Designer

Paul Daigle has a first-hand understanding

of the intricacies of designing for dance.

A graduate of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet

School, Mr. Daigle went on to perform for

two seasons with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet

before leaving in 1988 to pursue a career

in design.

Paul Daigle has established a very

creative and productive relationship with

choreographer Mark Godden. Together

they have collaborated on a variety

of creations for the Royal Winnipeg

Ballet, including sets and costumes for

Sequoia, Godden’s 1989 Clifford E. Lee

Choreographic Award winning ballet,

Godden’s two award-winning pas de

deux, Myth and La Princesse et le Soldat,

as well as Forms of Distinction, Rapsodie

espagnole, and seven one-act Godden

ballets: Symphony No. 1, Angels in the

Architecture, Dame aux Fruits, La Folía,

A Darkness Between Us, Shepherd’s

Wake and Miroirs.

During the 1997/1998 RWB season he

redesigned the sets for Antony Tudor’s The

Leaves Are Fading and the costumes for

Paquita. He also collaborated with Mark

During the 1998/1999 season,

Mr. Daigle designed the scenery and

costumes for Mark Godden’s first full-

length ballet, Dracula. In 2003, he went

on to win the Manitoba Motion Picture

Industry Association Blizzard Award for

best costume design for Guy Maddin’s film

adaptation of Godden’s Dracula.

Paul Daigle designed the costumes for

the RWB’s Nutcracker, which premiered

at Ottawa’s National Arts Centre on

December 2, 1999. In 2003 he was

reunited with Mark Godden to create the

scenery and costume design for Godden’s

full-length creation The Magic Flute which

premiered in Winnipeg.

Mr. Daigle has created set and

costume designs for numerous ballet

and theatre companies including Ballet

British Columbia, Ballet Jörgen, Atlantic

Ballet Theatre of Canada, Alberta Ballet,

Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Kiev

Ballet, Compañía Nacional de Danza

(Mexico City), Theatre New Brunswick

(Fredericton), Neptune Theatre (Halifax)

and Theatre Aquarius (Hamilton). Paul has

had the honour to design new creations

for world renowned choreographers Mark

Morris, Kevin O’Day and Alexei Ratmansky.

Paul’s most recent work includes

costume designs for Mark Godden’s

Svengalli and costume designs for Michael

Pink’s critically acclaimed full-length

production of La Boheme for Milwaukee

Ballet which premiered in October 2012.

Brian PerchalukScenic Designer

Brian Perchaluk is a set and costume

designer based in Winnipeg. Born and

raised in rural Manitoba, Brian graduated

from the University of Winnipeg and the

National Theatre School of Canada and

later went on to apprentice at the Banff

Centre. His designs have been featured on

stages across the country including the

Neptune Theatre, Atlantic Ballet Theatre,

Canadian Stage, Theatre Passe Muraille,

the Grand Theatre, the Blyth Festival, the

National Arts Centre, Persephone Theatre,

Theatre Calgary, Alberta Theatre Projects,

the Citadel Theatre, The Vancouver

Playhouse, the Arts Club Theatre, the

Belfry Theatre and two seasons each at the

Stratford and Shaw Festivals.

In Winnipeg he has often worked

for Prairie Theatre Exchange, Manitoba

Theatre for Young People, Rainbow Stage,

Le Cercle Molière, Manitoba Opera and the

Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, where he

has designed more than forty productions.

Among his favourite credits are

M. Butterfly for the Royal Manitoba Theatre

Centre and the National Arts Centre, Les

Misérables for the Neptune Theatre, Time

and the Conways for the Shaw Festival,

Nutcracker for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet

and Hay Fever for Theatre Calgary.

In 1999 Brian received a Gemini Award

for outstanding production design for

his work on Journey and in 2003 a Jessie

Richardson Award for outstanding set

design for Mary’s Wedding.

Michael J. WhitfieldLighting Designer

Michael J. Whitfield has an extensive

background in lighting design for theatre,

ballet and opera.

A native of Victoria, BC, Mr. Whitfield

received his training in theatre at the

University of Victoria, Villanova University

and the University of Illinois. In 1974 he

began a long association with the Stratford

Festival, where he was for many years

the Resident Lighting Designer and was

responsible for the lighting design of

a great variety of plays and musicals,

including The Mikado, Amadeus and

King Lear. He has worked extensively in

Canadian regional theatre and his work is

often seen at the Royal Manitoba Theatre

Centre.

Mr. Whitfield is also much in demand

as a lighting designer for opera and

his designs have been featured at the

San Francisco Opera, San Diego Opera

Company, Houston Grand Opera, the

Minnesota Opera, the Dallas Opera, the

Welsh National Opera and for Canadian

companies in Toronto, Montréal, Ottawa,

Hamilton, Edmonton, Calgary, Banff and

Vancouver. His lighting has been featured

at the Canadian Opera Company for over

30, years where designs included Wozzeck

and Madama Butterfly.

In the world of ballet, Mr. Whitfield’s

work has been represented by Alice and

The Nutcracker at The National Ballet of

Canada, The Merry Widow for the American

Ballet Theatre and Romeo & Juliet at the

Finnish National Ballet.

For Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet his

lighting design has also been seen in The

Sleeping Beauty and Anne of Green Gables.

Tadeusz BiernackiDirecteur musical et chef d’orchestre

Le directeur musical et chef d’orchestre

Tadeusz Biernacki est né à Czestochowa,

en Pologne, où il a entamé sa formation

musicale dès l’âge de quatre ans. Il a

remporté le Concours Karol Szymanowski

à Varsovie en 1976 et a obtenu une

maîtrise en musique avec spécialisation en

interprétation au piano au Conservatoire

de musique de Katowice en 1978. Il s’est

produit en soliste dans de nombreux pays

d’Europe. En 1978, il s’installe au Canada

où il poursuit ses études sous la tutelle du

du Manitoba et à la Banff School of Fine

Tadeusz BiernackiMusic Director and Conductor

Music Director and Conductor Tadeusz

Biernacki was born in Czestochowa, Poland

where he began his music education at

the early age of four. He won the Karol

Szymanowski competition in Warsaw

in 1976 and earned his Master of Music

degree in Piano Performance from the

Conservatory of Music in Katowice in 1978.

He has performed as a soloist in many

European countries. Biernacki settled in

Canada in 1978 and continued his studies

with Professor Marek Jablonski at the

University of Manitoba and Banff School of

Fine Arts. As a winner of the 1980 Young

Artist’s Competition, Biernacki has toured

Canada extensively in solo and chamber

music recitals. In 1983 he began his

association with the Manitoba Opera and

in 1988 with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. He

made his conducting debut with Winnipeg

Symphony Orchestra in 1992. Biernacki

has branched out into composition with his

one act opera Happy Campers composed

for the Manitoba Opera School Tour in

1997, as well as numerous symphonic

arrangements and orchestrations with

other organizations. Charlies Kreuzfahrt,

a full-length ballet commissioned for

Stadtische Theater Chemnitz in Germany,

received its world premiere in 2005.

Feeling equally at home with choral music,

Biernacki has been Music Director of

Sokol Polish Folk Ensemble since 1980.

In addition to his position with the RWB,

Biernacki is Music Director and Conductor

of Saskatoon Opera, as well as Assistant

Music Director, Assistant Conductor and

Chorus Master of Manitoba Opera.
