HUMAN LANDSCAPES Cultural Bridges Programme est une démarche de la Communauté Européenne ayant pour objectif de soutenir des initiatives entre pays membres et pays candidats à l’adhésion, dans le but d’améliorer leur connaissance mutuelle et d’encourager un débat sur les différentes perceptions concernant la société et les questions politiques, notamment par le biais de la culture.

Dans ce contexte, Wallonie-Bruxelles International et Contretype introduisaient en 2007 un projet de séjours de production artistique impliquant la Communauté française de Belgique, la Turquie et la Hongrie.

Après identification des opérateurs, à savoir la Bilgi University à Istanbul, la Maison Hongroise de la Photographie à Budapest et Contretype à Bruxelles, ceux-ci ont émis les propositions artistiques, tandis que les déplacements, l’accueil des artistes et la production étaient gérés par le partenaire européen en Turquie, le Goethe Institut à Istanbul.

C’est dans ce cadre que les photographes turcs Refik Anadol et Alican Aktürk ont travaillé à Bruxelles, tandis qu’Efe Mert Kaya et Maurizio Braggiotti se sont rendus à Pécs en Hongrie.

En contrepartie, les photographes hongrois Krisztián Bócsi et Gyula Sopronyi ainsi que les Belges Philippe Herbet et François Goffin ont chacun réalisé un travail en Turquie.

Durant leur séjour de trois semaines en moyenne, les photographes ont pu affirmer leur démarche personnelle tout en prenant en compte les traces de l’héritage culturel perceptibles dans l’environnement tant paysager qu’humain.

L’exposition Human Landscapes présente une sélection restreinte, mais néanmoins représentative de la vision des auteurs; on peut y découvrir des points de vue et des démarches spécifiques, ce qui nous prouve une fois de plus que la photographie n’est pas un simple reflet dans le miroir…

HUMAN LANDSCAPES Cultural Bridges Programme van de Europese Gemeenschap wil initiatieven ondersteunen tussen de lidstaten en de kandidaat-lidstaten, met als hoofddoel elkaar beter te leren kennen en een debat op gang te brengen over de verschil-lende percepties op maatschappelijk en politiek vlak, en dat meer bepaald door middel van cultuur.

In deze context introduceerden Wallonie-Bruxelles International en Contretype in 2007 een artistiek residentie- en uitwisselingsprogramma tussen de Belgische Franstalige gemeenschap, Turkije en Hongarije.

Meer bepaald de Bilgi University in Istanboel, het Hongaarse Huis van de Fotografie in Boedapest en Contretype in Brussel leverden een aantal artis-tieke voorstellen en stonden ook in voor de verplaatsingen en de ontvangst van de kunstenaars, terwijl de productie in handen was van de Europese partner in Turkije, het Goethe Instituut in Istanboel.

Zo gingen de Turkse fotografen Refik Anadol en Alican Aktürk aan het werk in Brussel, terwijl Efe Mert Kaya en Maurizio Braggiotti naar het Hongaarse Pécs trokken.

Als een pendant daarvan realiseerden de Hongaarse fotografen Krisztián Bócsi en Gyula Sopronyi en de Belgen Philippe Herbet en François Goffin een werk in Turkije.

In de loop van hun verblijf van een drietal weken, konden deze fotografen hun persoonlijke demarches toetsen aan de sporen van een cultureel erfgoed, dat zowel naspeurbaar is in de landschappelijke als in de menselijke omgeving.

De tentoonstelling Human Landscapes presenteert een beperkte, maar representatieve keuze uit verschillende visies; je kan er uitgesproken stand-punten en specifieke demarches ontdekken, wat eens te meer bewijst dat de fotografie zoveel meer is dan een ampele reflectie in de spiegel...

HUMAN LANDSCAPES European Community’s Cultural Bridges Programme’s objective is to support initiatives between Member States and Candidate Member States which use cultural means to improve mutual knowledge and encourage debates about different perceptions of society and political issues.

As part of this project, in 2007, Wallonie-Bruxelles International and Contretype launched a programme of working artist exchange visits involving the French Community in Belgium, Turkey and Hungary.

The following project participants were chosen: Bilgi University in Istanbul, The Hungarian House of Photography in Budapest and Contretype in Brussels. The participants suggested suitable artists, while the travel and accommodation arrangements for the artists and the handling of the finished works of art were managed by the European Community’s partner in Turkey, the Goethe Institut in Istanbul.

The Turkish artists selected were the photographers Refik Anadol and Alican Aktürk, who worked in Brussels, and Efe Mert Kaya and Maurizio Braggiotti who worked in Pécs in Hungary.

In return, the Hungarian photographers Krisztián Bócsi and Gyula Sopronyi, together with the Belgians Philippe Herbet and François Goffin, each undertook an assignment in Turkey.

During their visits, of three weeks on average, the photographers were able to develop their personal approach while taking into account the cultural heritage which remained visible in the local landscapes and people.

The exhibition Human Landscapes presents a small, but nonetheless repre-sentative, selection of the photographers’ visions, including specific points of view and approaches, which once again prove to us that photography is not just a simple reflection in a mirror…

HUMAN LANDSCAPES Ziel des Cultural Bridges-Programms der Europäischen Union ist es, Kulturprojekte zwischen EU-Mitgliedsstaaten und -Beitrittskandidaten zu unterstützen, um den gegenseitigen Wissensaustausch zu fördern und eine offene Diskussion über gesellschaftliche und politische Fragen anzuregen.

Im rahmen dieses Programms initiierten Wallonie-Bruxelles International und Contretype 2007 ein Künstleraustauschprojekt, an die Französische Gemeinschaft Belgiens, die Türkei und dem Ungarn teilnehmen.

Die Partner des Projekts, namentlich die Bilgi Universität Istanbul, das Ungarische Haus der Fotografie in Budapest und Contretype in Brüssel, haben die Künstler vorgeschlagen, während der europäische Partner in der Türkei, das Goethe-Institut Istanbul, die Reiseorganisation, Künstlerbetreuung und Produktion derAusstellung übernommen hat.

Im Laufe des Projekts hielten sich die türkischen Fotografen Refik Anadol und Alican Aktürk in Brüssel auf, während Efe Mert Kaya und Maurizio Braggiotti nach Pécs in Ungarn gereist sind. Im Gegenzug begaben sich die ungarischen Fotografen Krisztián Bócsi und Gyula Sopronyi sowie die Belgier Philippe Herbet und François Goffin in die Türkei.

Während ihrer durchschnittlich dreiwöchigen Aufenthalte hatten die Künstler die Möglichkeit, persönliche Perspektiven auf ihre neue Umwelt zu entwickeln, besonders unter Berücksichtung der kulturellen und sozialen Vielfalt vor Ort.

Die Ausstellung Human Landscapes präsentiert eine Auswahl der im Zuge des Projekts entstandenen Arbeiten. Die unterschiedlichen künstlerischen Sicht- und Arbeitsweisen der Fotografen veranschaulichen die Vielfältigkeit des Mediums Fotografie, welches sich nicht nur auf ein Spiegelbild der Realität reduzieren lässt…

ALICAN AKTÜRK is a graduate student and teaching assistant at Bilgi University’s Photography and Video Department in Istanbul. He is currently studying for a Master’s degree in Visual Communication Design. His work and research is focused on architectural photography and audio-visual performances.

REFIK ANADOL (born 1985) is a graduate student and teaching assistant in Visual Communication Design at Bilgi University in Istanbul. He is particularly interested in live audio-visual performances, architectural photography and the relationship between architecture and media. www.refikanadol.com

KRISZTIÁN BÓCSI (born 1974) is a Hungarian freelance photographer. He holds a degree in Cultural Anthropology and Museum Studies from the University of Miskolc. In recent years he has won several prizes in the Hungarian Press Photo Competition. He was also awarded the József Pécsi Art Photography Prize, and participated in the Credit Suisse Photography Masterclass. His photographs have been published in several books and in The National Geographic Magazine and Marie Claire.

MAURIZIO BRAGGIOTTI (born 1984, Izmir, Turkey) won an undergraduate scholarship to study Photography and Video Production at Bilgi University in Istanbul. He graduated in 2009 and now works as a professional photographer and a part-time Lecturer at Bilgi University.

FRANÇOIS GOFFIN (born 1979) lives and works in the Condroz region of Belgium. He studied photography at 75 in Brussels, and held his first exhibition in 2006 at Contretype in Brussels (Project:Brussels, with Luca Etter, Sarah Morissens and Armand Quetsch). In 2008, his exhibi-tion Simple Things was held at the Namur Cultural Centre in Belgium, moving to Contretype in Brussels in 2009 and the Antoing Cultural Centre in Belgium in 2010. www.francoisgoffin.com

PHILIPPE HERBET (born 1964) lives and works in Belgium and elsewhere. He studied photography at the St. Luc School of Fine Arts in Liège, Belgium. He devotes most of his time to photography, writing and travelling in the Far East. Several solo exhibitions at Contretype in Brussels: Rhizome in 2000; Brussels-Europe in 2004 (Artistic Residency at Contretype) and Far Eastern Rhizome – Journey through the ex-USSR. His solo exhibition Made in Belarus is cur-rently on show at the Museum of Photography in Charleroi, Belgium. www.philippeherbet.com

EFE MERT KAYA (born 1984, Duzce, Turkey) won an undergraduate scholarship to study Visual Communication Design at Bigli University in Istanbul. During his studies, he specialised in time-based media and graphic design. While still a student, he worked as a music video director, an exhibition ID designer and a live video-jockey (VJ). He graduated in 2009 and now works as a Lecturer in the Department of Visual Communication Design at Bilgi University and also as a designer at the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art.

GUYLA SOPRONYI (born 1974, Budapest, Hungary) is a freelance Hungarian photo-grapher. He studied photography (1992-1994) and holds a degree in Film, Television and Media Studies (2005). He has won numerous awards, including the National Geographic Award (Hungary) in 2007 and 2009 and the André Kertesz Grand Prize for People-Oriented Documentary Photography in 2010.
