    Dr. Rajendar R. Jinna

  • On behalf of American Telugu Association and on my behalf it is my honor to welcome you and your families and friends to the12th ATA Conference & Youth Convention at the Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta, GA, USA. It has been almost morethan a year now, since we started putting together the framework for organizing this event. Various Convention Committees underthe guidance of ATA2012 ad-hoc committee, board of trustees and with partnership with local organizations such as Telugu Asso-ciation of Metro Atlanta and Greater Atlanta Telugu Association have been working very hard to present to you a memorable andenjoyable conference and my heartfelt thanks go out to each and every one for their support and cooperation.

The enthusiasm and eagerness shown by people of different walks of life to participate in this conference both from USA and ourmother land Andhra Pradesh is over whelming and we welcome and appreciate their participation. The theme for this conference is"Samskruti, Saampradhayam and Samaja Seva" all events are planned to reflect the chosen theme. As in the past, we will celebrateand glorify our culture, language, traditions and our way of life through cultural program presentations and diverse lineup of programsdesigned to make this event enjoyable educational and entertaining for all age groups. Several forums such as Business, CME, political, panel discussions, literary, and women's at the conference will enlighten with thought provoking discussion and talks. Needles tosay, in all forums professional touch is given by engaging professional and accomplished speakers and literary persons. In additionwe will be showcasing an exhibition that will be sure to the liking of all. Some of the highlights this conference briefly:

The Banquet Dinner will be a grand event and will certainly create an ambiance for the next two days with ATA recognition awards, entertain-ment program by invited and local artists and other events.

The business seminars are designed to be informative and interactive, opening up avenues for young entrepreneurs and creating new contactsfor established businesses.

The political forums are bound to be a huge success given the current volatile state of affairs in Andhra Pradesh. Inviting politicians from dif-ferent political affiliations will allow for free and fair exchange of viewpoints along with enthusiastic audience participation.

The Education Committee intends to conduct information sessions to support educational opportunities for school-level and college-level TeluguAmericans, support activities for Telugu students pursuing studies at American universities, support for education in India, opportunities forlearning Telugu informally, as well as formally at American schools and colleges.

The cultural programs are both exciting and entertaining as they give us a real-time chance to see and meet the celebrities who twinkle on thehorizon of the Telugu film industry. In addition, we will have wonderful time in witnessing our local talent present their talent through "JumandiPaadam, Sayyandi Naadam" and Star Dance other competition finalists presenting their talents on the main stage.

The CME program has a distinguished panel of doctors who've taken time out of their busy schedules to impart knowledge and open up the floorto new ideas.

The women's forum will be engaging you in several exploratory and empowerment sessions, in addition to fun activities and competitions.

For the spiritually inclined, a meditation workshop has been organized to gain a deeper understanding of the world we live in and in addition tothought provoking talks.

For those of us who thrive in a fair amount of friendly competition, the Youth Convention has exciting games to entice a wide range of players.

Young minds will be challenged in the chess, caroms and word-game tournaments being organized by the sports committee.

The youth activities includes tantalizing youth shows during prime time, dinner cruise and club night and many more activities to make newfriends and forge relationships.

Finally, I would take this opportunity to thank all our friends, well wishers and corporate sponsors who have been kind enough toshare their time, resources and financial support to make this event a grand success. At the end of this three day event, it is ourresponsibility to ensure you go back home with wonderful memories of Atlanta, of friends - old and new and of the greatness of ourTelugu culture. I wish and hope you and your family will enjoy our hospitality, entertainment and all the activities at ATA2012and leave with lasting memories.

The idea of starting a national organization of Teluguspeaking people in USA was under consideration by con-cerned persons of people of Telugu origin for about twoto three years (1988-90). Finally, in early part of 1990 abouttwo dozen likeminded individuals from various parts ofUSA gathered for an informal meeting in Chicago anddiscussed various aspects related to Telugu people of USAand India. After long deliberations, an idea to start a Na-tional Organization named American Telugu Association(ATA) was agreed by the participating delegates. Addi-tional input was solicited from various individual aroundthe country about forming an Interim Board of the orga-nization and formally registering the organization in Illi-nois as a not-for-profit organization.

The Beginning and the events of first decade: Af-ter getting very encouraging feed back around the com-munity, a town hall meeting was organized in Naperville,Illinois which was attended by more than 150 Teluguspeaking people from different parts USA. To facilitate theformation and functioning of the organization, Interim Ex-ecutive committee was chosen from the Chicago area. Thisinterim Executive Committee consisted of Chairman(Krishna Reddy), Vice-chairman (Kasinadhuni M. Prasad),Secretary (Madhava Reddy), Joint-Secretary (GnaneswarKavetti), Treasurer (Rajendar Pampati), and Joint-Trea-surer (Chandrasekhar Thunga). The Interim ExecutiveCommittee was entrusted to communicate with Teluguspeaking people in different regions of the country whowill be interested in serving as Interim Board Member. With the help of Hanmanth Reddy (IL) and Bandaru S.Reddy (NY) about 22 members were chosen to serve in theInterim Board in addition to the Executive Committee.

With the first ATA logo (designed with the help ofBalarami Pammi, NY) and stationary at hand, the InterimExecutive Committee got quickly into action of taking careof all formalities to incorporate the organization. Ameri-can Telugu Association was formally incorporated as not-for-profit organization in Illinois in September 1990 andalso received tax exempt status at the same time.

The main purpose of the organization is to assistand promote literary, cultural, educational, religious, so-cial, economic, health and community activities of thepeople of Telugu origin as well as to promote exchangeprograms for students, scientists, and professionals ofTelugu origin between the United States of America,Canada and India and other countries. With this mainobjective, a mail campaign was initiated nationwide formembership drive. In initial attempt ATA was able toreach about three thousand families in this membershipcampaign. The response was very encouraging and mem-bership reached around 500 in the first year itself. Simul-taneously, the planning was also in progress to hold firstATA Telugu conference and Youth Convention in Chicago

in July of 1991. A conference committee was formed by theend of December 1990 Kasinadhuni Prasad as Convener. In early part of 1991, the conference committee meetingswere held at Convener's house, and in one of these meet-ings, Devulapally Krishna suggested the name of AmericaBharathi for ATA Newsletter. The first issue of AmericaBharathi was published in the early part of the 1991.

A constitution committee was formed to formulatethe articles and by laws for ATA under the chairmanshipof Susarala Viswanatham. The draft constitution was pre-sented in the first ATA General Body Meeting held inChicago during the first ATA conference. This inauguralconference was very well received and about 1500 peopleattended this first ATA event. The General body approvedthe initial constitution and extended the term of InterimExecutive committee up to the end of 1991 until the newBoard of Trustees were elected. First batch of Board ofTrustees were elected unanimously in September 1991which elected its first Executive Committee. The membersof first ATA Executive Committee were, Sadasiva Reddy(President), Kasinadhuni.S.M. Prasad (President-elect),Yashoda Reddy (Secretary), Charan G. Reddy (Jt. Secre-tary), Mr. Raghava Rao Vanguri (Treasurer), TukaramChavan (Jt. Treasurer).

At this stage, ATA decided to hold World TeluguConference and Second ATA conference in New Yorkduring July 1992. Bandaru Sivarami Reddy was Convenerof this conference. Second ATA conference was a greatsuccess and was attended by about 4000 people. After the1992 ATA conference, ATA conferences are being heldevery two years. The third ATA conference was held inSan Jose, California under the leadership of DurisalaDesiah (President) and Kota Reddy (Convener). In 1995,then ATA President Mr. Charan G. Reddy convinced theBoard to hold 4th ATA conference in Houston during theJuly 4th holiday weekend. Under the leadership ofHanmanth Reddy as ATA President, A.V.N. Reddy asConvener, this ATA conference reached to new level andset many standards that were followed and surpassed insubsequent conferences. About 5000 people attended theHouston ATA conference from many parts of USA andIndia. During this conference, the General Body adoptedthe amended ATA constitution that extended the term ofExecutive Committee to two years, so that the same com-mittee will be able to serve and make better planning forthe conference and take care of other association activities.Keeping with the ATA tradition, 5th ATA conference alsoset many new records and had its share of success underthe leadership of Dr. Gopal Reddy Gade (President) andMr. Davendar Reddy (Convener).

The extensive use of multimediawas one of the highlights of this conference. Moreover, theAtlanta conference not only was financially successful, butalso contributed in developing elaborate conference guide-lines (organizational structure and administrative planalong with business-financial plan) for future events.

Marching into the second decade: Successful host-ing of 2000, the Millennia Telugu Conference, ATA setnew tone for the organization and its mission as well asfuture activities. ATA started a series of conferences inAndhra Pradesh, India to share the experiences and ex-pertise of nonresident Telugu profession with the peoplewith the people of Andhra Pradesh. ATA's first Medicaland Business conferences were successfully held inHyderabad during the month of December 2000 and 2001respectively.

ATA administrative activities in second decadetook a major step forward with the establishment of regu-lar office at Naperville, IL (the official registered place)under the leadership of 2001-02 term executive commit-tee. All the financial and other routine operations are co-ordinated from this location with the help of office staffand Executive Director.

The organizing team of 7th ATA conference(Subhashini Boyareddigari, convener; Srinivasa R.Pinnapureddy, coordinator; Krishna Bapatla, co-convener;Bheem Shenkar Penta, local coordinator) under the lead-ership of Sandhya R. Gavva, ATA President (a local resi-dent) demonstrated a true team spirit and partnershipwith local Telugu association (TANTEX) and achievednumerous milestones. As promised, the Organizing Teamdelivered a Texas-size event without any glitches. Like theAtlanta event this conference was also a financially veryrewarding. The Magnificent beauty of the banquet halland the banquet set the right tone from the beginning. Likein other conferences, this conference also had many "firsts"such as for the first time that Telugus could register on-line, Spiritual and Youth Committees published separatesouvenirs, Business Seminars Committee published a"How To" handbook, and Panel Discussions and Women'sForum conducted discussions of "hot topics of the day" onthe main stage. One of the highlights of the inaugural pro-gram was Samatha-Mamatha-Yuvatha theme ballet bylocal talent with lyrics, melody and music. Overall theconference was very successful and well attended.

Growing Pains: Along with its rapid growth morepeople are showing interest in the organization's govern-

ing affairs and its activities. ATA is not only a progres-sive and rapidly growing organization but also cateringto the needs of Telugu people across the USA with diver-sified interests. ATA upholds all the democratic principleswhich are the corner stones of this organization. Every twoyears fourteen (or thirteen alternately) new trustees areelected for American Telugu Association Board for a termof four years by respective category or membership (3from Grand patron, 3 from Patron and seven/eight fromLife membership category). In the quest for new candi-dates to fill open governing positions in the ATA, we mustremind ourselves of the fact that the selected candidateswill be a major source for supporting activities that facili-tate the advancement of our Telugu community. For thefirst time during 2002 several members in the life mem-bership category showed interest to serve as trustees thanthe number of openings available on the board that re-sulted in the election. Lack of clarity within the Constitu-tion and Bylaws and misinterpretation by few individu-als who are not familiar with working practices and tra-ditions of the organization probably contributed to anunhealthy gossip that took place after the 2002 elections.Board of trustees took corrective measures to fix some ofthese and other short comings in the Constitution andBylaws. The revised constitution and bylaws was rati-fied by the membership at large in November 2003. Com-plete dismissal of the previllous law suit that took lot ofthe energy and financial recourses of the organizationsince the beginning of the 2003 by the Illinois judicial sys-tem is a clear vindication for this organization and itsdemocratic practices.

Keeping with previous traditions the new execu-tive committee (2003-04) started several new projects inour mother land through ATA foundation. Adopt a childto educate, asthma medical camp, polio vaccination aresome of the projects that merits special recognition.

Celebration of ATA-Roju--MaathruboomiloMahotsavam" during the December 2003 in Hyderabad,Andhra Pradesh, India, full filled the long cherished de-sire of ATA board of trustees to show case the talents ofAmerican Telugu Youth side by side with talent of ourmother land. During the ATA Roju, ATA organized liter-ary and culture programs along with the hosting of sec-ond medical and business conferences in Andhra Pradeshand recognized prominent Telugu Persons in Sangeetham(Padmavibhusan Dr. Mangalampalli Balamurali Krishna),Saithyam (Padmabushan Dr. C. Narayana Reddy), andNruthyam (Padmasri Dr. Natara Ramakrishna).

ATA 2004 organizing team under the leadershipof A.V.N. Reddy (ATA President), Murthy Chimata (Con-vener), Ramesh Tummuru (Co-convener) Chandra R.Gavva (Coordinator) and Ramanamurthy Yedavalli (Lo-cal Coordinator) with an excellent support from TeluguAssociation of Greater Chicago (TAGC) as a co-host de-livered very successful conference that was attended bymore than 8,000, a first time record for any Telugu con-ference held in this country. Traditional decorations, themagnificent beauty of the banquet hall and the banquetthat was attended by over 2,200 set the right tone from thebeginning. Like in other conferences, this conference alsohad many "firsts" to its credit such as "avadhanam" on themain stage. One of the highlights of the inaugural program

    Y 47yV

  • was Puttinintiki puna pravesham theme ballet by localtalent and the lyrics, melody and music were very good.We are very sure vendors who have participated in thisconference must have been very happy, as seen by largecrowds in exhibits area. With the all glory and successesthis conference had its share of minor glitches especiallyin hospitality and registration areas and that needs moreattention in future conferences. In addition this confer-ence exceeded expected budget projections at the sametime it also brought in more funds through donations andleft a decent surplus after conference.

Like in the previous years the new executive com-mittee under the leadership of Mohan Mallam, presidentof ATA started several new projects in Andhra Pradeshthrough ATA foundation. Adopt a child to educate, HIV-AIDS awareness and prevention of fluorosis problemmerits special recognition. The new tradition started bythe last executive committee also received much attentionfrom the current executive committee to celebrate "ATA-Vedukalu"-- in our mother land, Andhra Pradesh, Indiaduring December 2005 as well as "ATA Roju" in differentcities in this country. As a part of this celebration, severalevents were under taken in A.P. India, such as culturalactivities both in Hyderabad and Tirupati, CME seminarin Hyderabad, HIV-AIDS awareness rally in Warangaland a rural folk/village festival in Kundaram village(Warangal Dist). These events generated large publicityfor ATA activities and helped to solicit donation and sup-port for the 9th ATA conference.

9th ATA Telugu Conference and Youth Conven-tion held in Long Beach, CA was another successful con-ference. "Pravaasa geetham nava sangeetham" was thetheme for this conference. ATA 2006 organizing teamunder the leadership of Mohan Mallam (ATA President),Dharma Reddy Gummadi (Convener), Buchi Reddy (Co-convener) Sanjeeva Reddy Tangutri (National Coordina-tor) and Lakshman Koka (Local Coordinator) with an ex-cellent support from a large number of enthusiastic vol-unteers established several new milestones like many pre-vious ATA conferences. The commitment of ATA to workwith local organizations like previous conferences wasquite evident this time also. Local Telugu Association,TASC is Co-hosting ATA 2006. With the all glory and suc-cesses this conference had its share of minor glitches inregistration and food arrangements as well as few sur-prises especially the expenditure of the conference ex-ceeded expected budget projections at the same time it alsobrought in more funds through donations, however thesurplus was very modest.

Biannual Conferences are not only the few mainactivities that ATA undertakes every year. Through vari-ous committees, ATA reaches its objectives and goals. Forexample, through ATA foundation committee, ATA pro-vides financial assistance to various developmentalprojects in India. ATA raises and distributes funds forvarious charitable activities and provides financial aid tothe victims of natural and other emergencies both in ourmother land and adopted country. America Bharathi, aliterary and communication mouth piece of ATA reachesover 6,000 thousand Telugu families every other monthand it is emerging as one of the premier Telugu literary

publication outside of the Andhra Pradesh, India. The 2004-2006 EC under took of the distribution of

retroviral drugs to patients suffering from HIV/AIDS withcooperation of APAIDSCON as part of ATA foundationactivities in India. This team also distributed several schol-arships to eligible students under ATA VIDYADANAMin our motherland

2007-2008 Executive Committee under the leader-ship of Chandra Reddy Gavva, ATA President embarkedon very ambitious plans to expand the activities in Indiaas well as in USA. Increased the scope of the regional co-ordinators and added new regions and adopt a villageprogram needs a special mention which a part of the newEC goals to serve our mother land. To better coordinateactivities in India 2007-2008 team also initiated discus-sion/efforts to establish a permanent office in India in itsown building.

New EC also expanded "ATA Roju" activities indifferent regions to bring more awareness about the or-ganization as well as promote 10th ATA conference indifferent parts of this country.

"ATA Vedukalu" that took place during the Decem-ber 2007 in various parts of Andhra Pradesh brought at-tention to ATA Foundation activities and provided con-nectivity and communication between India and USA aswell as provided a forum to promote 10th ATA conference. The tone and scope of these events were different thanprevious ones raising doubts in the minds of ATA lead-ership whether to continue or not such activities in thefuture and it is up to the current/future leadership toaddress such concerns.

As in the past (2001), once again both ATA andTANA has shown their excellent working cooperation byorganizing joint reception to honor the Andhra PradeshChief minister who was in USA in connection with WorldAgriculture Forum during the month of May 2007.

10th ATA Telugu Conference and Youth Conven-tion held in Prudential Center, Newark, NJ during the July4th weekend of 2008 with main conference theme."Dahamaavatharam-Telugu Thalliki Haaram -Yuvatharaanki Dwaaram" encompassed the spirit of allprevious nine conferences. Like previous conferences thisone was intended to pay a tribute to Telugu culture andour youth leadership.

ATA 2008 Conference organizing team under theleadership of Chandra Reddy Gavva (ATA President),Balarami Pammi (Convener), Stanley Reddy (Co-con-vener) Vijaypal Reddy (National Coordinator) and ArjunDyapa (Local Coordinator) under the guidance of ad-hocand local advisory committee as well as with an excellentsupport from a large number of enthusiastic local volun-teers embarked on a grand plan but fell short on its execu-tion at different levels.

In spite a change in the venue (from New York Cityto Newark, NJ) during the midstream of preparations thisconference attracted more than 12,000 attendees surpass-ing all previous records set for any Telugu conference inthis country. With the all glory and successes in some ar-eas, deficiencies or not adequate arrangements for serv-ing the food and other aspects of the conference contrib-uted to some dissatisfaction during this conference as well

    12e { eTVdu\ | d+ 201248 Y

  • as unhealthy chattering after the conference. In additionthis conference turned out to be the most expensive con-ference to date and did not provide any financial rewardsfor the organization.

New/Growing interest in ATA Leadership: Unlikeprevious elections for board of trustee positions, in 2008several members in different membership categoriesshowed interest to serve as trustees than the number ofopenings available on the board that resulted in the con-tentious election. And through their vote ATA memberssent a strong message by electing all but one nominatingcommittee panel member with overwhelming majority byclearly vindicating the existing process. Even the candi-date of exception received outstanding support from allATA well wishers and Nominating committee slate can-didates. Based on the feedback many members are tiredof some of the campaign approaches adopted during elec-tion process and we are sure ATA leadership will makeappropriate changes before future elections.

Unexpected strife in ATA: Some of the issues/problems that contributed to mixed success of 10th ATAconference somehow popped up into regular organiza-tional activities when the first regular meeting of ATAboard trustees for 2009-2010 term started with a conten-tious election for president-elect and other executive com-mittee positions along with nominated positions such asconference convener (Srinivasa Pinnapureddy), coordina-tor (Rajeshwar Rao Tekmal), standing committee chairsand regional coordinators (see list below) and created deepdivisions among the trustees.

A special committee headed by Premsagar Reddythat included several past presidents was formed to re-solve these differences that surfaced in the January 2009board meeting. In spite of committee's intense efforts toresolve the differences among board members, it failed todo so because of lack of fairness and factional differencesamong some of the members, which appeared to be theroot cause of this failure.

A special board meeting was called for in April2009 and without any regard for ATA constitution, bylawsand rules of parliamentary procedures, actions were takenusing simple majority to dismiss executive committee elec-tions with several changes in the nominated positions thatwere approved in January 2009 board meeting. This ledto further deepening of divisions among the board mem-bers and some of the affected executive committee mem-bers and nominated members sought the legal help to stopthe actions taken in the April 2009 board of trustees meet-ing.

Despite our intense efforts to sort out the differ-ences with special board meetings there was no progress. In addition, a group of trustees resigned en masse in No-vember 2010 just before the election of new board of trust-ees. Suits and counter suits took away most of the 2009-2010 and drained the organization's financial resources.Ultimately, it led to cancellation of the 11th ATA bi-annualconference that was to be held during July 4th weekendof 2010 in Houston.

Future looks brighter: Notwithstanding these hic-cups, ATA is marching towards the silver jubilee year andis ever vibrant and active. Since "no individual is bigger

than the organization", committed members, ATA well-wishers, founding members, remaining board of trusteesalong with new trustees (See 2009-2010 executive commit-tee/trustees list) are marching forward to bring back theold glory of our organization. Elections for the board oftrustees for the term of 2011-2012 were successfully con-ducted under the leadership of B. Madhava Reddy, ATAPresident and Sandhya Gavva as the Chair of Nominat-ing Committee (Madhava B. Reddy, Founding member/trustee, was elected as a trustee and president of ATA tofill the remaining term of Jithender Reddy who resignedin November 2010. Sandhya Gavva was nominated as thechair of nominating committee in place of Chandra R.Gavva, who resigned in September 2009).

Executive Committee for 2011-2012 was formedunder the leadership of Rajender R. Jinna as ATA Presi-dent and he is entrusted with the challenging task of es-tablishing normalcy in the organization after experienc-ing an upheaval under the leadership of Jithender M.Reddy as ATA President. In order to strengthen ATA atgross roots levels, a number of new regions and regionalcoordinators were added to the existing positions. NewEC decided to expand "ATA Roju" activities in differentregions to bring more awareness about the organizationas well as promote 12th ATA conference in different partsof the country. "ATA Vedukalu" that took place during theDecember 2011 in various parts of Andhra Pradeshbrought attention to ATA Foundation activities and pro-vided connectivity and communication between India andUSA as well as provided a forum to promote 12th ATAconference.

The main theme for the 12th ATA convention andyouth conference (ATA2012) is "Samskruthi, Saampra-daayamu and samaajaseva" (Culture, Tradition and Com-munity service. ATA2012 Convention organizing teamunder the leadership of Rajender R. Jinna (ATA President),Karunakar Asireddy (Convener), Jaganmohan M. Rao(Coordinator) and under the guidance of ad-hoc commit-tee that includes above three people along with KarunakarMadhavaram (ATA, President-Elect), Madhava B. Reddy(Immediate past president), Sandhya Gavva and SrinivasaPinnapureddy (Past presidents of ATA), Rajeshwar RaoTekmal and Parmesh Bheemreddy (ATA trustees) with anexcellent support from a large number of enthusiastic lo-cal volunteers (different committees) have embarked ona grand plan to host this conference. Local associations,Telugu Association of Metro Atlanta (TAMA) and GreaterAtlanta Telugu Association (GATA) are participating asco-host and co-sponsor respectively to assist ATA in or-ganizing this event in Atlanta. As this article went intopress (June 2012), ATA leadership is already actively in-volved devoting all its energy to successfully host 12thATA Telugu Conference and Youth Convention at Geor-gia World Congress Center at Atlanta during July 4thweekend of 2012.

Current 2011-2012 Executive Committee/Trusteesand others is Presented as a separate Document.
