1. In Australia Easter is celebrated in the autumn months of March or April It is a time
of church services, family gatherings, eggs, bunnies and lots of fun. Australians enjoy
a four-day holiday weekend starting on Good Friday and ending on Easter Monday.
Families make the most of the opportunity to spend time outdoors before winter starts.
Easter is a celebration of religious significance with many Australians
attending church on Easter Sunday.
2. Chocolate bunnies and eggs of all sizes in colourful foil wrappings are a favourite
part of Easter in Australia. Early on Easter Sunday morning, while the children are
sleeping the Easter Bunny 'delivers' chocolate eggs. Some families have Easter egg
hunts where chocolate eggs are hidden in the house or garden for excited
children to run around and find.
3. Although the Easter bunny remains a huge part of Easter in Australia, in recent
years the endangered bilby, a rather cute, long eared native animal, has been seen
as a replacement for the bunny by some Australians. The reason for this is the
rabbit which is an introduced animal is not popular as it has done a lot of damage to
the natural environment. Chocolate Easter Bilby’s can be seen in stores alongside the
more traditional bunnies. Some companies donate a percentage of sales to a fund set up to
help protect the bilby.
4. Hot cross buns are also another Easter treat popular with Australians. They are
sweet, spiced buns made with dried fruit. A cross, (the symbol of Christ) usually
made from a mixture of flour and water is put on top of the buns. The buns are
traditionally eaten on Good Friday and taste best hot with plenty of butter. A recent
variation on the traditional fruit bun has become popular in Australia. A chocolate
version is made with the same spiced mixture, but cocoa is added to the dough and
chocolate chips replace the dried fruit.
5. Easter is also a time of various events with the most well known held in
Sydney. The Sydney Royal Easter Show is an agricultural show held annually over a
two-week period which includes the Easter long weekend. The Show is traditionally an
opportunity for people from rural communities to exhibit their livestock and produce
and to take part in various competitions. It also includes the Sydney Royal Show rodeo,
parades, fireworks displays as well as the latest on offer in the way of extreme rides
and attractions.

ACTIVITY 3 : An Unexpected Holiday
Read the text below. Look carefully at each sentence. Some of the sentences are correct but some have a word which should not be there.
All of a sudden, before two years ago, my aunt was rushed to hospital
needing emergency surgery. She was fine but not very well enough to
go on the two-week holiday she had booked months ahead. She asked
for me if I wanted to go in her place. I jumped at the opportunity as
I had never been to abroad
before. Getting time off work
was being easily arranged but
doing last minute shopping was
harder. There it seemed to be
no shop that stocked swimming
suits in mid-January! Finally, I
got everything ready. As well as
being a little nervous of flying,
I was worried whether I would
find a company. Everyone reassured me that I would meet lots of
people and make friends in no any time at all. It felt like ages waiting
for the plane to take off next morning. My holiday turned out that to
be wonderful. Why? Because of I met lots of interesting people, and
also because I had the chance to relax.

Dug is the past tense of dig.
Doug is the correct spelling.
This is a joke because dogs
dig holes.
Carl is a shy, quiet boy. Ellie is his
friend. They are fans of Muntz the
explorer. They grow up and get
married. Carl sells toy balloons and
Ellie is a zookeeper. They want to
save their money to visit Paradise
Falls, but Ellie gets sick and dies.
Later ....
Carl lives alone. He does not
want to move out of his
house into a retirement
home. He turns his house
into an airship. He uses
thousands of helium balloons
to make it fly.
A young boy called Russell goes with him.
There is a thunderstorm. The house is near a large ravine
opposite Paradise Falls. They hope to reach the falls before the
balloons deflate. They meet a large bird who is trying to reach
her chicks, and a dog named Dug who has a special collar so he
can speak.
Russell calls the bird Kevin.

3
This is a joke because Kevin is
a boy’s name.
Carl and Russell meet a pack of dogs. They go
to the dogs’ master. He is a very old man. He is Muntz the explorer. Muntz is a bit crazy. He
wants to catch Kevin the bird.
They run away, but Muntz’s dogs chase them. Muntz catches Kevin
the bird and Russell is angry.
Alone in his house Carl looks at some photos and finds a note from
Ellie. She tells him to go on an adventure.
He looks for Russell, but Russell is floating away with some balloons
to find Kevin. Many of the balloons on Carl’s house have burst, so
Carl takes the furniture out of the house so it can float up again.
Russell is captured by Muntz, but Carl rescues him and Kevin. Kevin
goes back to her chicks and Carl and Russell fly home to the city in
the airship. The house lands on the cliff near Paradise Falls just as
Ellie wanted. Russell wins a special badge for helping old people.
Dear Carl,
Go on an
adventure.
Love Ellie
