    DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

    HOW TO USE THIS GROUPThe purpose of this group is to show the electrical

    c i r c u i t s i n a c l e a r , s i m p l e f a s h i o n a n d t o m a k e t r o u -

    bl es h oot i n g e a s i er. C o mp on e n t s t h a t w o r k t o ge t h er

    are shown together. All electrical components used ina specific system a re shown on one diagra m. The feed

    f or a s ys t em i s s h ow n a t t h e t o p of t h e p a g e. Al l

    wires, connectors, splices, and components are shown

    in the flow of current to the bottom of the page. Wir-

    ing which is not part of the circuit represented is ref-

    erenced to a nother page/section, w here t he complete

    ci r cu i t i s s h ow n . I n a d d i t i on , a l l s w i t ch e s, com p o-

    n e n t s , a n d m o d u l e s a r e s h o w n i n t h e at rest posi-tion with the doors closed and the key removedfrom the ignition.

    If a component is part of several different circuits,

For example, a shortpiece of wire is treated the same as a long one.In addition, switches and other components areshown as simply as possible, with regard tofunction only.

    CONNECTOR/GROUND LOCATIONSSection 8W-90 conta ins connector/ground loca tion

    il lustra tions. The i l lustra tions contain the connector

    na me (or number)/ground number an d component

    identification. Connector/ground location charts in

    Section 8W-90 reference t he i l lustra tion number for

    components and connectors.

    Section 8W-80 shows each connector an d the cir-

    cuits involved with tha t connector. The connectors

    a r e i d en t i f ie d u s i n g t h e n a m e /n u m ber on t h e Di a -

    g r a m p a g e s .

    SPLICE LOCATIONSSplice L ocat ion charts in Section 8W-70 show the

    entire splice, and provide references to other sections

    the splice serves.

    Section 8W-95 contains i l lustrations that show the

    genera l locat ion of the splices in each ha rness. The

    il lustrations show the splice by number, and provide

    a w r i t t e n l oca t i on .

    CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATIONAll circuits in t he dia grams use a n alpha /numeric

    code t o identify t he w ire a nd i ts function (Fig. 3). To

    identify which circuit code applies to a system, refer

    t o t h e C i r cu i t I d e n t i fi ca t i o n C o de C h a r t . Th i s c h a r t

    s h o w s t h e m a i n c i r c u i t s o n l y a n d d o e s n o t s h o w t h e

    secondary codes that may apply to some models.

    CONNECTORSC o nn e ct o r s s h ow n i n t h e d i a g r a m s a r e i d en t i f ie d

    For viewing connector pin outs, with two terminals

    or greater, refer to section 8W-80. This section iden-

    ti fies in-line connectors by number, an d component

    connectors by name. If a component has two or more

    connectors they wil l be identified as C1, C2, C3.. .etc.

    This sections also provides terminal numbering, cir-

    TAKE OUTSThe abbreviation T/O is used in the component

    location section to indicate a point in which the wir-

    ing harness branches out to a component.

    CONNECTOR AND SPLICE IDENTIFICATIONTh e con n e ct o r a n d s pl i ce n u m ber i n g u s ed i n t h i s

    s er v i ce m a n u a l i s d i f f er e n t t h a n t h e n u m ber i n g u s e d

    in other service manuals. This numbering change is

    due to the unique wiring harnesses used in this vehi-

    cle.

    The connector an d splice n umbering for this vehi-

    When looking at a splice reference the alpha code

    f or w h a t h a r n e ss t h e s pl ice i s l oca t e d i n w i l l c om e

    f i r s t , t h e n a n S t o i n d i c a t e a s p l i c e , a n d f i n a l l y t h e

    splice number. An example of this would be ES02.

    (1) Always touch a known good ground before han-d l in g t h e p a r t . Th i s s h o ul d be r e pe a t e d w h i le h a n -

    (2) Avoid touching electrical terminals of the part ,

    unless instructed to do so by a written procedure.

    (3) When using a voltmeter, be sure to connect the

    ground lead first .

    FASTENERS

    CAUTION: At no time when servicing a vehicle, cana sheet metal screw, bolt, or other metal fastener beinstalled in the strut tower to take the place of anoriginal plastic clip. Also, NO holes can be drilled

    into the front strut tower in the area shown in (Fig.7) for the installation of any metal fasteners into thestrut tower. Because of the minimum clearance inthis area (Fig. 7) installation of metal fastenerscould damage the coil spring coating and lead to a

    corrosion failure of the spring. If a plastic clip ismissing, or is lost or broken during servicing avehicle, replace only with the equivalent part listedin the parts catalog.

    POSITIVE TEMPERATURE COEFFICIENTP ositive Temperat ure Coefficient (P TC) devices a re

    being used for circuit protection. These PTCs act like

    a s ol i d s t a t e f u s e. Th e y a r e l o ca t e d i n t h e ju n ct i on

    bl o c k , a n d a r e u s e d t o p r o t e c t s u c h i t e m s a s : p o w e r

    door lock m otors, power w indows, an d various engine

    solenoids.

    A s pe ci a l s y m bol i s u s e d t o i d e n t i fy t h e s e i n t h e

    wiring diagrams (Fig. 8).

    DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

    TROUBLESHOOTING TOOLSWhen diagnosing a problem in an electrical circuit

    there are several common tools necessary. These tools

    are l isted and explained below.

    J u m p er Wi r e - Th i s i s a t e s t w i r e u s ed t o con -

    an open in a circuit .

    WARNING: NEVER USE A JUMPER WIRE ACROSSA LOAD, SUCH AS A MOTOR, CONNECTEDBETWEEN A BATTERY FEED AND GROUND.

    cuit . Alwa ys connect the black lead t o a known good

    g r o u n d a n d t h e r e d l e a d t o t h e p o s i t i v e s i d e o f t h e

    circuit.

    CAUTION: Most of the electrical components usedin todays vehicle are solid state. When checkingvoltages in these circuits use a meter with a 10-me-gohm or greater impedance.

    between two points of a circuit . Low or no resistance

    in a circuit means good continuity.

    CAUTION: - Most of the electrical components usedin todays vehicle are Solid State. When checking

    resistance in these circuits use a meter with a10-megohm or greater impedance. In addition, makesure the power is disconnected from the circuit.Circuits that are powered up by the vehicle electri-

    cal system can cause damage to the equipment andprovide false readings.

    P robing Tools - These t ools a re used for probing

    t e r m in a l s i n con n e ct o r s (Fi g . 9). Se l ect t h e p r op er

    size t ool from Special Tool P ackage 6807, a nd insert

    i t i n t o t h e t e r m i n a l be i n g t e s t e d . U s e t h e o t h e r e n d

    of the tool to insert the meter probe.

    INTERMITTENT AND POOR CONNECTIONSM os t i n t e r mi t t e n t e le ct r i ca l p r obl em s a r e ca u s e d

    by f a u l t y e le ct r i ca l con n e ct i on s or w i r i n g . I t i s a l s o

    possible for a st icking component or relay to cause a

    problem. B efore condemning a component or w iring

    assembly check the following i tems.

    Connectors are fully seated

    Sp r e a d t e r m i n a l s , o r t e r m i n a l p u s h o u t

    Dirt or corrosion on the terminals. Any amount

    of corrosion or dirt could cause an intermittent prob-

    TROUBLESHOOTING TESTSB efore beginning a ny tests on a vehicles electrical

    s y s t em u s e t h e Wi r in g D i a g r a m s a n d s t u d y t h e ci r -

    cuit . Also refer to the Troubleshooting Wiring P rob-

    lems section in this section.

    TESTING FOR VOLTAGE(1) C o n ne ct t h e g r ou n d l ea d of a v ol t m et e r t o a

    known good ground (Fig. 10).

    (2 ) C o n n e c t t h e o t h e r l e a d o f t h e v o l t m e t e r t o t h e

    selected test point. The vehicle ignition may need to

    be turn ed ON to check voltage. Refer to t he a ppropri-

    ate test procedure.

    TESTING FOR CONTINUITY

    (1) Remove t he fuse for the circuit being checked

    or, disconnect the battery.

    (2) Connect one lead of the ohmmeter to one side

    of the circuit being tested (Fig. 11).

    (3 ) C o n n e c t t h e o t h e r l e a d t o t h e o t h e r e n d o f t h e

    circuit being tested. Low or no resistance means good

    continuity.

    TESTING FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    (1) Rem ov e t h e f us e a n d d is con n ect a l l i tem s

    involved with the fuse.

    (2) C o n ne ct a t e s t l ig h t or a v ol t m et e r a cr os s t h e

    t e r m in a l s of t h e f u s e.

    (3) S t a r t i n g a t t h e f u se b l ock , w i g g le t h e w i ri n g

    h a r n e ss a b ou t s ix t o e ig h t i n ch es a p a r t a n d w a t c h

    th e voltmeter/test lam p.

    (4) I f t h e v ol t m et e r r e g is t e r s v ol t a g e o r t h e t e s t

    TESTING FOR A SHORT TO GROUND ON

    FUSES POWERING SEVERAL LOADS

    (1) Refer to the wiring diagrams and disconnect or

    isolate al l i tems on the fused circuit .

    (2) Replace the blown fuse.

    (3) S u p pl y p ow e r t o t h e f u se b y t u r n in g O N t h e

    ignition switch or re-connecting the battery.

    TESTING FOR A VOLTAGE DROP

    (1) C o n n ect t h e p os i t iv e l e a d of t h e v ol t m et e r t o

    the side of the circuit closest to the battery (Fig. 12).

    other side of the switch or component.

    (3) Operate the i tem.

    (4) The voltmeter wil l show the difference in volt-

    a g e be t w e e n t h e t w o p o i n t s .

    disconnect them to verify these add-on i tems are not

    the cause of the problem.

    (1) Verify the problem.(2) Ve r if y a n y r e la t e d s y m pt o m s. Do t h i s by p er -

    f or m i n g op er a t i o n a l ch e ck s on com p on e n t s t h a t a r e

    i n t h e s a m e c i r c u i t . R e f e r t o t h e w i r i n g d i a g r a m s .

    (3) An a l y ze t h e s y mp t om s . U s e t h e w i r in g d i a -

    g r a m s t o d e t e r m i n e w h a t t h e c i r c u i t i s d o i n g , w h e r e

    t h e p r o bl e m m o s t l i k e l y i s o c c u r r i n g a n d w h e r e t h e

    diagnosis wil l continue.

    (4) Isolate the problem area.

    (5) Repair the problem.

    (6) Verify proper operation. For this step check for

    proper operation of al l i tems on the repaired circuit .

    SERVICE PROCEDURES

    WIRI NG REPAIRWhen replacing or repairing a wire, i t is important

    t h a t t h e c or r ect g a u g e b e u s ed a s s h ow n i n t h e w i r -

    i n g d i a g r a m s . T h e w i r e s m u s t a l s o be h e l d s e c u r e l y

    i n p l a c e t o p r e v e n t d a m a g e t o t h e i n s u l a t i o n .(1) Disconnect battery negative cable

    (2) Remove 1 inch of insulation from each end of

    t h e w i r e .

    (3) P l a c e a p ie ce of h e a t s h r i n k t u bi n g ov er on e

    s i d e o f t h e w i r e . M a k e s u r e t h e t u b i n g w i l l b e l o n g

    e n o u g h t o c o v e r a n d s e a l t h e e n t i r e r e p a i r a r e a .

    ( 4 ) S p r e a d t h e s t r a n d s o f t h e w i r e a p a r t o n e a c h

    part of the exposed wire (example 1). (Fig. 13)

    (5) P u s h t h e t w o e nd s of w i r e t o ge t he r u n t i l t h e

    s t r a n d s o f w i r e a r e c l o s e t o t h e i n s u l a t i o n (e x a m p l e

    (6) Twist the wir es t ogether (example 3) (Fig. 13)

    (7) Solder the connection together using rosin coretype solder only. Do not use acid core solder.

    (8) C e n t e r t h e h e a t s h r i n k t u bi n g ov er t h e joi n t ,

    a n d h e a t u s i n g a h e a t g u n . H e a t t h e j o i n t u n t i l t h e

    tubing is t ightly sealed and sealant comes out of both

    e n d s o f t h e t u bi n g .

    (9) Secure the wire to the existing ones to prevent

    c h a f i n g o r d a m a g e t o t h e i n s u l a t i o n

    (10) Connect battery and test al l affected systems.

    TERM INAL/CONNECTOR REPAIR-M OLEXCONNECTORS

    (1) Disconnect battery.

    (2) Disconnect the connector from its mating half/

    component.

    (3) Insert the terminal releasing special tool 6742

    into the terminal end of the connector (Fig. 14).

    (4) Using special tool 6742 release the locking fin-

    gers on the terminal (Fig. 15).

    (5) Pull on the wire to remove i t from the connec-

    tor.

    (6) Repair or replace the connector or terminal , as

    necessary.

    CONNECTOR REPLACEMENT(1) Disconnect battery.

    (2) Disconnect the connector that is to be repaired

    from it s m a ting ha lf/component

    (3) R em ov e t h e con n ect or l ock in g w e dg e, i f

    required (Fig. 16)

    (4) Position the connector locking finger away from

    the terminal using the proper pick from special tool

    k it 6680. P u l l on t h e w i r e t o r em ov e t h e t e rm i na l

    from the connector (Fig. 17) (Fig. 18).

    (5 ) R e s e t t h e t e r m i n a l l o c k i n g t a n g , i f i t h a s o n e .

    (6 ) I n s e r t t h e r e m o v e d w i r e i n t h e s a m e c a v i t y o n

    the repair connector.

    (7) Repeat steps four through six for each wire in

    t h e c o n n e c t o r , be i n g s u r e t h a t a l l w i r e s a r e i n s e r t e d

    into t he proper cavities. F or a dditiona l connector pin-

    ou t i d en t i f ica t i on , r e fe r t o t h e w i r i n g d i a g r a m s .

    (8) I n s er t t h e con n e ct o r l ock i n g w e d g e i n t o t h e

    repaired connector, if required.

    (9) Connect connector to its ma ting ha lf/component.

    (10) Connect battery and test al l affected systems.

    CONNECTOR AND TERMINAL REPLACEMENT(1) Disconnect battery.

    (2) D is con nect t h e con nect or (t h a t i s t o b e

    repaired) from it s m a ting ha lf/component.

    (3) C u t of f t h e e x is t i n g w i r e c on n e ct o r d i r e ct l y

    behind the insulator. Remove six inches of tape from

    t h e h a r n e s s .

    (4) S t a g g er c u t a l l w i r e s on t h e h a r n es s s id e a t

    1/2 inch int erva ls (Fig . 19).

    (5) Remove 1 inch of insulation from each wire on

    t h e h a r n e s s s i d e .

    (6) S t a g g er cu t t h e m a t ch i ng w i r es on t h e r ep a ir

    connector a ssembly in the opposite order a s w as done

    on the harness side of the repair. Allow extra length

    f or s ol d er ed con n ect i on s . C h eck t h a t t h e ov er a l ll en g t h i s t h e s a m e a s t h e or i g in a l (Fi g . 1 9).

    (7) Remove 1 inch of insulation from each wire.

    (8) P l a ce a p ie ce o f h ea t s h r in k t u bi n g o v er o n e

    (16) Re-connect the repaired connector.

    (17) Connect th e batt ery, and t est al l affected sys-

    tems.

    TERMINAL/CONNECTOR REPAIR- AUGAT

    CONNECTORS(1) Disconnect battery.

    (2) Disconnect the connector from its mating half/

    component.

    (3) Push down on the yellow connector locking tab

    to release the terminals (Fig. 20).

    (4 ) U s i n g s p e c i a l t o o l 6 9 3 2 , p u s h t h e t e r m i n a l t o

    remove it from the connector (Fig. 21).

    (5) Repair or replace the connector or terminal as

    necessary.

    (6) When r e-a ssembling the connector, the locking

    wedge must be placed in t he locked position to pre-

    v e n t t e r m i n a l p u s h o u t .

    TERM INAL REPLACEM ENT(1) Disconnect battery.

    (2) Disconnect the connector being repaired from

    its mating half. Remove connector locking wedge, i f

    required (Fig. 22).

    (3) Remove connector locking w edge, i f required

    (Fig. 22).

    (4) P o si t ion t h e con n ect or l ock in g f in g er a w a y

    from the terminal using the proper pick from special

    tool kit 6680. P ull on the wire t o remove the t erminalfrom the connector (Fig. 23) (Fig. 24).

    (5) C u t t h e w i r e 6 i n ch es f rom t h e b a ck of t h e

    connector.

    (6) R e mov e 1 i n ch of i n s u l a t i on f r om t h e w i r e on

    t h e h a r n e s s s i d e .

    (7) Se l ect a w i r e f r o m t h e t e r m in a l r e pa i r a s s e m -

    bl y t h a t bes t m a t c h es t h e col or w i r e be i n g r e pa i r e d .

    (8) C u t t h e r e pa i r w i re t o t h e p r op er l en g t h a n d

    remove 1 inch of insulation.

    (17) Re-ta pe th e w ire ha rness sta rtin g 1-1/2 inches

    behind the connector and 2 inches past the repair.

    (18) Connect battery, and test al l affected systems.

    DIODE REPLACEMENT(1) Disconnect the battery.

    (2) L o ca t e t h e d iod e i n t h e h a r n es s, a n d r em ov e

    the protective covering.

    (3) Remove the diode from the harness, pay atten-

    tion to the current flow direction (Fig. 25).

    (4) R e m ov e t h e i n su la t i on f r om t h e w i r es i n t h e

    harness. Only remove enough insulation to solder in

    the new diode.

    (5) I n s t a l l t h e n ew d i od e i n t h e h a r n es s , m a k i n g

    sure current flow is correct. If necessary refer to the

    appropriate wiring diagram for current flow.

    (6) Solder the connection together using rosin core

    type solder only. Do not use acid core solder.

    (7) Tape the diode t o t he h ar ness using electricalt a p e m a k in g , s u re t h e d iod e i s com pl et e ly s ea l ed

    from the elements.

    (8) R e -con n e ct t h e ba t t e r y, a n d t e s t a f f ect e d s y s -

    tems.
