Time has come to speak a little about our dear parents who have already been gone for many years. To have the dead come alive, we will recall here a few memories that we cannot forget to this day. Everyone recalls the past and several memories are always with us -- because who is not proud like us to belong to a family of ancestors who are well-known and respected because of their wisdom and piety. We owe a debt of gratitude to our parents for the quality of life that they transmitted to us, to our mother Z`L, who died too young--because it is from her happiness, common sense, humour and faith that she showed to us the path to follow. To our father, who thanks to his, wisdom and knowledge has always been a strong presence for us and our family, commanding respect from his family and business colleagues. It is mostly, however, the harmony at home emanating from the perfect relationship between our parents that was an example for us and our future.

Our father who studied science in university in addition to Yeshiva study and later studies in German at Breuer, had left his parents` home a young age and was the eldest of 14 children. He met my mother during an interview in Berlin, Germany. According to the story he was attracted immediately by her beautiful black eyes and philosophical presentation. She is the one who helped her younger brothers with their homework which contributed to her great culture and literary knowledge.

It is also in Germany that our father established friendship with Moritz Zober, the editor of Schoken Verlag, kind of pocketbooks, that allowed us to discover a few of Agnon`s books published in the 20s. Still it is our mother who intervened with the military authorities to obtain the liberation of our father from the Russian front from where he brought back a small prayer book with a blue cover that he found in the trenches from a non-Jewish comrade.

After the first WWI, our father returned to his manufacturing of bags and tarps that he started at the beginning of the century with his brother, Michael (who died in 1916 in Baranovice, Belorusia). He started a vegetable garden surrounded by a chicken koop which made our father an ecologist before his time. It was not his only distraction, in the evening he liked to read the classic French writers and studied Talmudic texts and others every day. The house was always wide-open to the poor especially to the students from who were frequent guests and later to German refugees.

He also had a beautiful voice that brought to our Shabbat and holiday evenings a happy and solemn ambience. Each one of us had the right to sing Zmirot in turn. To close the singing, he added Hungarian verses that he learned from a great Hungarian Rabbi.

Our mother adapted to the customs of our father and the Austro-Hungarian cuisine we all loved (the Berlin, Germany cuisine lacked spice and variety). In Constantine, where we lived from 1940 to 1945, our father knew how to make himself liked by the numerous Jews of our neighbourhood. Once in awhile he also sang during our meetings Jewish and profane songs from his youth. However, the painful period of his life was the premature death of our mother who was a real support for him, their qualities complemented and completed each other incredibly well.

He studied at Goettingen and in Frankfurt at Rabbi Hoffman's yeshiva. Met his wife, Selma, through an advertisement. He was 33 and she was 26. Uncle Erich helped his family financially. He had a high position. When Michael Klein died, Moritz sent for Norbert.
