Tsurumi, Yusuke (1885-1973) : Politiker, Autor

Biographie

1943 [Tsurumi, Yusuke]. Bailun zhuan. Chen Qiuzi yi. [ID D26447].Chen Qiuzi schreibt in der Einführung : "Will the striving Chinese intellectuals of today, especially the younger generation, who worship Byron for his heroic deeds, be deeply movedand nobly inspired by this biography ?"Chu Chih-yu : Tsurumi's Byron came during the Japanese War. At this time of national crisis, the glorious image of Byron again played a very important role in encouraging the Chinese todefend their country. Tsurumi believed in the political power of Byron's poetry. He wrote thebook in the hope that Byron's spirit could inspire Japanese youth. The aspect of Byronism headmired the most seems to have been Byron's uniqueness, his unique ideas, 'ideas thatshocked all the people'. All the facts, the analysis and interpretation of Byron's behaviour, andvery often, even the diction were taken from Maurois. The difference is, that Tsurumi usuallyquoted Byron's letters and journals directly from Moore's book and at greater length, and headapted remarks from Taine and Arnold on Byron's poetry. He also added some briefdescription of the plots of Byron's major poems. The book was overloaded with eulogisticwords such as heroism, genius, freedom, revolution, rebellion, uniqueness etc. About Byron'swomen, Tsurumi followed Maurois' presentation except in his description of Byron'srelationship with his half-sister. He neither supported nor rejected the charge of incest againByron, but simply shunned the topic as best as he could. [Byr1:S. 76-78]

1964 Yoshikawa, Kojiro. An interview with Ezra Pound. Transl. into English by Burton Watson. In: The East-West review ; vol. 1, no 2 (1964).When Professor Yoshikawa met Pound, the poet was exposing himself to the sun, half-naked,standing on the grass. Around him were several young people, among whom a lady, a painter."We were just protesting against Western civilization". This seemed to be the gist of his firstwords. I supposed he was referring to the exercises they had been doing. His next words Icaught clearly. "I am a Confucian". Though I was aware it might sound like flattery, I askedpointedly if this was true. He repeated once more, "I am a Confucian". At this the young ladyseated at his side kissed his left hand with a look of joy… A number of oil paintings oncanvas and on board were scattered about the grass, already there when the exercises weregoing on. One of them was turned face down. On the yellow grain of the wood I could seewritten the three characters Hsin, Hsin, Hsin. I pointed to the painting and asked why therewere Chinese character written on them… I did not catch his answer, but only the question heasked in return. "The character means new, doesn't it ?" "Fresh", I added. "Creative". Hsin tsonan men - "We built anew the southern gate" ; the passage in the Spring and autumn annalscame to my mind. His eyes narrowed behind the beard and the young lady once more pressedher face against his hand. The board was turned over, revealing the face of a young girl ; shelooked like the girl sitting beside us. [Pou41]
