  • Chairman of the Heritage Tours Committee Prsident du Comit des voyages culturels

    Dear Members, Chers membres,

It gives me great pleasure to present to you our tours brochure for 2009, offering a variety of interesting tours to some fascinating destinations.

Our travels will start in March with a superb tour, organised by our expert Member, Sofia Barroso, to Andaluca, that resplendent part of Spain with its mixture of extraordinary Christian and Moorish heritage. Her tour to Mallorca in 2007 was a sellout because of its singular quality and numerous original features, and therefore expectations may be set equally highly for the tour to Andaluca.

The following tour in May has been organised by Members, viz. the marquis and marquise de Lotoing, who will lead us to a charming but rugged part of France: Bretagne. This impressive region may be well known to many, but this splendid tour promises to show us places that can be visited upon special introduction only.

It is with quite some pride that I introduce our July tour to the relatively unexplored or even unknown destination of Greenland, the dramatically magnificent far-away island province of Denmark. This highly original tour will surely be one of the most unique ones ever organised within the Europa Nostra tours framework.

Our October tour needs little introduction. As Florence and surroundings are well known, our exclusive tour will concentrate on seeing many private places, and the iconic highlights visited will be done so privately and under expert guidance. This tour will offer you a chance to renew your acquaintance with this marvelous area in an exceptional way.

The final tour in November will take us to the magic country of Tunisia. This (French-speaking) tour will give you a rare introduction into the culture and heritage of one of the most attractive and fascinating North African countries. Dazzling cities will alternate with breathtaking countryside a genuine eye-opening visit to a relatively unknown country.

Again this year, I am most grateful to all Members who have so enthusiastically given support, enabling us to offer the exciting and highly varied 2009 Heritage Tours programme. I am sure you will appreciate the effort that has gone into creating these tours some of which are organised in-house so as to boost the much needed financial contribution the tours make to Europa Nostras Hans de Koster Mobility Fund for Central and Eastern Europe. We hope that this will be an extra stimulant for you to join one or more of these tours.

On a practical note: most tours tend to be very popular and sell out quickly. Therefore, to not disappoint prospective travelers I recommend that you send us your registrations and deposit payments for the tour(s) of your liking as early as possible. Please also carefully read the Booking Details and Conditions, which of necessity have to be adhered to strictly.

My colleagues on the Heritage Tours Committee and I wish you a very enjoyable travelling season with Europa Nostra, and are grateful for your much valued patronage.

    Yours sincerely,

Notre voyage doctobre n a gure besoin dintroduction.

  • Splendours of Andaluca 29.03 - 05.04.2009Mlaga, Granada, Crdoba and Sevilla

Spectacular Andaluca is famous for its Islamic palaces, picturesque little villages and wild sierras. Despite its strong Islamic roots, Andalucas heritage is Spanish as well as Moorish, and both will be highlighted during this grand tour of one of the most dramatic regions of Spain.

The tour begins in Mlaga, where we will visit the impressive Cathedral and the Palacio de Buenavista, which houses the important collection of works by Picasso, who was born in Mlaga. The palacio is a magnificent example of 16th century Andalusian architecture with its characteristic mixture of Renaissance and Mudjar elements. A stroll through the brilliantly restored historic quarter will be followed by a welcome tapas reception in a private historic house.

The Sierra Nevada forms an impressive backdrop to the extraordinary city Granada, last stronghold of the Moors in Spain and next grand destination of our tour. After arrival at and lunch in our hotel the Alhambra Palace, located within the grounds of the Alhambra, we will be introduced to the expert, who will guide us through the Palace of Charles V, the Alhambra and El Generalife palaces and gardens. On the second day in Granada, we will see the Cartuja Monastery, Granadas Royal Chapel, including Queen Isabelles private art collection, as well as the Renaissance-style Cathedral. The President of the Rodriguez Acosta Foundation will show us the art collection and wonderfully landscaped garden of the painter Jos Mara Rodriguez-Acosta and host a tapas lunch. An afternoon walk through the Albaycn, the old Moorish district with its whitewashed houses and flower-filled patios, will end with drinks in the lovely garden of Carmen de San Miguel.

On the way to Crdoba the following day, we will stop to visit the evocative ruins of the Medina Azahara, palatial Islamic town at the foot of the Sierra Morena. Lunch will be hosted at the private Monastery of San Jernimo by kind arrangement of the owner, the Marchioness of Merito and Countess du Chstel de la Howarderie, whose hospitality will grant us a unique opportunity to view this very special place, normally closed to visitors. In Crdoba, we shall see the Mezquita, the Great Mosque, the Jewish quarter and visit the private manor house of the Herruzo family, built on the ruins

During this tour we shall not visit the most popular regions of Bretagne, the northern part and Finestre, but rather two lesser known parts: the impressive region of Morbihan and the fascinating Nantes area. And, of course, we shall not forget Rennes, that splendid capital of Bretagne.

A welcome dinner at our very comfortable hotel (a Relais et Chteaux), located about 60 km northwest of Nantes in the grounds of the Chteau de la Bretesche, will start the programme. The next day will be devoted to visiting the city of Nantes, which once was the capital of Bretagne, enjoying great prosperity in the 17th and 18th centuries. First we visit the important Chteau of the Dukes of Bretagne, which recently reopened after a complete renovation. After touring the city by bus and lunch at a well known restaurant, classified as a Historic Monument, we shall discover the old city of the 18th and 19th centuries on foot. Later in the afternoon we shall be received at the great Chteau of the Marquis de Goulaine, followed by dinner along the pretty banks of the river Erdre.

The sea being of major importance in Bretagne, the next day will be a maritime one. After a boat crossing of 45 minutes, we arrive at Bell-le en Mer, which island, fortified in the 17th century and retaining a magnificent citadel, will be visited before having lunch in a Htel-Muse. After admiring the beautiful scenery of the island with its small villages, we shall return to the mainland to discover the seaside resort town of Quiberon. On the way home dinner will be served in a typical local restaurant.

The third day will take us to the interior, lArgoat, and we shall cross the Breton moors before arriving at Rennes, the regional capital. There we shall visit the recently restored magnificent Parliament of Bretagne, which burnt down in 1994, and walk through the alleyways of the old town (partly destroyed by fire in 1720), with their timber framed houses of the 15th - 17th centuries and beautiful htels particuliers. The day will end with a visit to the Parc du Thabor, resplendent with flowering camellias and rhododendrons. That evening we shall have dinner at the Michelin-starred restaurant of our hotel.

The following day is a day devoted to nature with a visit to the Parc

National Rgional de la Grande Brire, the second largest everglades of France. Touring it by boat we shall see its fauna and flora, as well as the thatched cottages of the local hamlets. Lunch will be taken in the small medieval town of Gurande, which is surrounded by walls dating from the Middle Ages. In the afternoon we shall see the famous Gurande salterns and the hand-harvesting of fleur de sel, followed by a visit to the 15th century Chteau de Careil. In the evening we dine at the charming seaport of Le Croisic, situated on a bay at the end of the salt marshes.

On the fifth day, the astonishing megalith site of Locmariaquer (also world famous for its oysters) will be visited, and thereafter the small village of Auray with its celebrated Basilique Sainte-Anne. Lunch will follow on the coast of the Morbihan gulf in a restaurant known for oysters and shellfish. Next we shall visit the Chteau de Kerlvenan, a ravishing building of the end of the 18th century, and the Chteau du Plessis-Josso, a fortified 14th century manor house with a complete enclosing wall. A stop at the 2000 years old town of Vannes and dinner in the vicinity will end the day.

The last morning will take us to two small cities displaying the typical character of this region: Rochefort en Terre with houses of the 16th and 17th centuries, and Malestrot, elevated as one of the nine baronies of Bretagne in 1451, and located along the banks of the river Oust. Finally, at our hotel a farewell lunch will be served.

The tour starts on 10 May with dinner at our hotel and ends on 16 May after lunch also at the hotel.

A number of visits to private properties has been scheduled, but, at time of publishing of this brochure, relevant details cannot yet be available.

Glittering icebergs, vast tundra and magnificent glaciers this tour to the worlds biggest island will offer you a unique opportunity to experience Greenlands mystical culture and see its, comparatively small scale, but highly attractive, built heritage and some of the grandest and most awe-inspiring natural heritage in the world. Rarely has Europa Nostra been in a position to offer its Members such an exceptional and unusual tour, which will enable participants to see the greatness of a seldom visited island under expert guidance.

The tour starts at 18.00hrs at the Copenhagen Airport Hilton Hotel with a welcome dinner and a special lecture on Sirius (kindly offered by Europa Nostra Denmark). The next morning we depart for Greenlands capital Nuuk. A guided visit of Nuuks old part of town including the colonial harbour will be our first introduction to Greenlands special heritage. We shall see the fine National Museum with, inter alia, the world-famous 15th century mummies from Qilakisoq, and also the handsome award-winning cultural centre Katuaq, which displays and preserves Greenlandic art and music.

The tour continues from Nuuk to the northwestern town of Ilulissat, where we will be accommodated in Hotel Arctic, beautifully situated above the city and with spectacular views of the Disko Bay, the stage of one of the worlds most stupendous glaciers. After a leisurely trek to the Sermermiut valley, where we shall see the remains of Greenlands largest settlement dating back to 1737, we will continue to Kllingeklften. From there stunning views may be relished of the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier calving off immense icebergs, which slowly move towards the mouth of the fjord meeting Disko Bay. In the evening a boat will take us to the magnificent Ilulissat Icefjord (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and be surrounded by giant icebergs sparkling in the midnight sun.

A day is devoted to the charming small town of Ilulissat, its harbour, old buildings and Greenlands major employer, the Royal Greenland Fish Factory. We shall also visit the Ilulissat Museum, birth home of Knud Rasmussen, as well as the Art Museum housing a unique collection of paintings by the famous Greenlandic painter, Emmanuel A. Pederson. In

the afternoon, Ono Fleischer, a descendant of Rasmussen, will give us a lecture about his long journeys on a dog sledge. After dinner in the Hotel Arctic, the traditional and still very popular Uaajeerneq dance will be performed for us.

The following morning, we depart by boat to the north towards the Ice Camp Eqi with on the way grand views of the massive mountains on Arveprinsens Ejland and steep bird cliffs. Having reached the Eqi glacier with its overarching ice cap, we will be accommodated in comfortable two-person cabins with magnificent views of the Eqi glacier. The next day at Ice Camp Eqi, there will be an optional hike to take a closer look at the glacier. From the top of the moraine that runs up along the massive ice-tongue, one gets a first-hand impression of the forces that push the ice out towards the sea. In the afternoon the boat will take us back to the Hotel Arctic. During the boat trip we hope to get the chance to see humpback (or minky) whales, just one of many whale species that appear in the Disko Bay in the summer.

On the last day, you can choose between an optional, spectacular helicopter flight to the front of the Ilulissat Glacier, an optional full day visit to the old settlement of Ilimanaq to sample the original way of life in Greenland, or a free day at Ilulisat for further local sightseeing, shopping and relaxing. The farewell dinner that eveningis followed by a special performance by the Ilulisat Greenlandic choir. The next morning we depart for Copenhagen, where in view of late arrival the final night will be spent at the Hilton Hotel. The tour ends after breakfast on 8 July.

It should be noted that this tour is somewhat more strenuous than the average Europa Nostra tour, and, therefore, participants should be in good health and reasonably fit (i.e. capable of walking for a few hours on flat, but unpaved terrain).

There can be relatively few of us who have not visited Florence or Siena, so this tour focuses chiefly on discovering some hidden treasures and, by special arrangement, venturing behind many closed doors. Europa Nostra Members will be received at more than a dozen beautiful private palaces and country villas, which are still in the hands of the original families.

On the first evening we will be hosted for dinner at the Circolo dellUnione, Florences most exclusive private club, by Marchese Niccol Rosselli del Turco, President of the Tuscan branch of the Italian Historic Houses Association. The palace was designed by Giorgio Vasari, architect of Cosimo I Medici. The club and our hotel, a charming historic hotel belonging to a Florentine family, are neighbours on the Via Tornabuoni, Florences most elegant shopping street. Our guide here will be Irish-born Marchesa Antonia Lanza dAjeta, who has lived in the city for over forty years.

A special visit to the Baptistery before normal opening hours, is a unique opportunity to admire the 13th-century marble pavement and mosaic ceiling in private. Subject to completion of major restoration work, we will be received at a fine private palazzo, designed c. 1490 by Giuliano da Sangallo. It has a charming Renaissance courtyard and splendid apartments hung with family portraits. Lunch will be at another private palace with elegant frescoed rooms. In the afternoon we will visit Palazzo Corsini, a prominent late Baroque palace on the Lungarno, with its impressive saloni and grotto. We will drive out to the country for dinner at Villa Capezzana, built for a Medici wedding.

After a special visit to the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, where works of art from the museums in Florence are restored, a private lunch will be hosted in an elegant apartment with a loggia overlooking Florences largest private garden, the Giardino Torrigiani. Next we will be shown the workshop of the Antico Setificio Fiorentino, owned by Marchesa Cristina Pucci, where exquisite silk fabrics are still produced on old looms. Subsequently we shall be received at the splendid Palazzo Corsini al Prato, where the vast terrace overlooks a rare late Renaissance garden.

On Thursday we will drive up to the atmospheric church of San Miniato, continuing to the hills of Arcetri. Here the beautiful terraced gardens of the 16th-century Villa Capponi afford magical views of the city and surrounding countryside. After drinks at a neighbouring villa, we have been invited for a light lunch at a private home nearby. After return to Florence, the remainder of the afternoon will be free. In the evening, we will visit the Palazzo Capponi. The austere exterior hides the monumental staircase leading to a vast piano nobile with its fine picture collection and frescoed reception rooms overlooking the river Arno.

The next day we leave for the enchanting countryside of the Chianti. Here we will visit the historic wine estate of Fonterutoli, which has been in the same family since 1435. We continue for lunch at Villa di Geggiano, also with a long history of family ownership. Dating from the 14th century, the villa and garden were transformed around 1780 and the interior decoration and furniture remain marvellously intact. The green theatre is also of special note. We continue to our hotel, Relais Borgo Scopeto, a beautifully converted medieval country estate surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, with spectacular views of Siena. Later we will visit the castle of Brolio, another historic family-owned wine estate producing superb Chianti Classico.

The visit to Siena will include the Duomo and the museum of the Nobile Contrada dellOca, where we will learn about the venerable traditions associated with the various contrade, or districts, of the city and with the famous Palio. We will be received for lunch in a grand patrician palazzo, overlooking the Campo. The interior offers a rare glimpse of the finest neo-classical decoration. There will be some free time for independent exploration before our farewell dinner.

The tour begins with dinner at the Hotel Tornabuoni Beacci in Florence on 26 October, and ends at Florence Airport at noon on 1 November.

Dubbed by ancient Arab geographers Jaziret el Maghrib, or the island of the setting sun, Tunisia in fact appears as a sort of felicitous enclave set amid the Algerian mountains, the Mediterranean and the Sahara. Composed of small plains separating the low mountain ranges of Kroumirie, Nefza and Mogods, the country is covered with peaceful ouadi such as Medjerda. Typically Mediterranean in the North, the landscape runs quickly outward to highly arid regions and is spotted with an alternating pattern of cork oaks, cultivated fields and horizons scorched by the chehili, the fiery breath of the desert.

You will learn of Tunisias enchanting history during the trip. In this context you should also recall that this region was one of the richest of the Roman Empire and that the Norman Kings of Sicily dominated it partly during the 12th century. Uncountable architectural evidences underline its many links with the European culture. Very open to international tourism, this splendid country is full of hidden treasures such as only a cultural tour can reveal. Far from the base lodgings, one discovers the Maghreb hinterland, with its villages, ksour, casbah and panoramas dating from Antiquity in a delicate and deeply moving harmony.

Our journey commences by welcoming the participants at the Regency Tunis Hotel, before starting out on our adventure the next morning, when we shall visit the city of Tunis, its fascinating medina and souks, the Bardo Museum, the historic site of Carthage, and the picturesque village of Sidi Bou Sad, perched atop a cliff at the edge of the sea.

The following day is devoted to the World of Antiquity, starting with a visit to Bulla Regia, a former royal capital under the Numids that became a Roman colony, with its famous mosaic pavements and patrician houses, moving on to Chemtou, a magnificent Numid and Roman metropolis, and then Dougga, whose ruins spread their majestic splendour over 25 hectares on the top of a hill.

The next day is focussed on Christianity and Islam, through a visit to Thuburbo, an ancient ally of Carthage, subsequently a Roman city and the centre of theological debates between Orthodox Christians and Donatists at the end of the Roman Empire and to Kairouan, where we shall admire

the great flowering of the arts in the fourth holy city of Islam and spiritual capital of the country with its famous mosque and the zaoua at Sidi Sahab.

Next we leave to discover the South and to visit Sbetla (formerly, Sufetula): the best preserved ancient site in the country with its Roman monuments, some of them rebuilt, where we will stay overnight at Dar Cherait, a little piece of paradise set in the palm grove of Tozeur.

An excursion by 4-wheel drive takes us into the mountain oases: Chebika, Tamerza, Mids, three spots marked by coolness, palm trees and sparkling crystal springs at the foot of mystical mountains.

The gateway to the Sahara leads us to our next days discoveries. We pass through Douz, a magnificent market for mules and dromedaries, with its crafting of Berber jewellery and a horizon filled with dunes and ksour (cave dwellings), before reaching Tataouine, a major population centre on the edge of the desert, surrounded by hills and resplendent traditional villages.

On the following day, we will unmask the mystery of the caves and the palm trees: at Matmata, an exceptional cave village perched high in the Djebel Tahar, Gabs, a major Numid and Arabic city, with its splendid palm grove and oases, and Sfax, Tunisias largest port, richly endowed with monuments from the Middle Ages.

Ultimately, as yet one more reminder of the majesty of a unique past, we bring this journey across Tunisia to a fitting conclusion by visiting El Jem - a city numbering 40,000 inhabitants during the Roman era and with a renowned amphitheatre, the largest in the Roman Empire after the Coliseum -, Sousse - the pearl of the Sahel, celebrated for its monuments (Grand Mosque) and its unmatched archaeological heritage -, and finally Hammamet, an ancient Roman city basking in gardens of jasmine and orange groves. Our last night of this journey will be spent on the countrys most beautiful beach, at the Sofitel Saphir Hotel.

The tour begins on 12 November at 19.00hrs with dinner at the Regency Tunis Hotel and ends at Tunis Airport on 21 November at around 11.00hrs.
