Ce livret résulte d’une collaboration menée avec le photographe belge Pierre Buch, dans le cadre du projet européen Terra [In]cognita. Architectures de terre en Europe. Il rassemble 60 photographies – 20 d’entre elles figurant dans une exposition itinérante – d’architec-ture traditionnelle et contemporaine réalisées dans les quatre pays partenaires du projet (France, Italie, Espagne et Portugal). Pierre Buch y livre son regard, celui d’un homme sen-sible à la matière, aux formes et aux lignes graphiques de l’architecture de terre: une façon de découvrir ou redécouvrir un matériau du passé, promesse d’avenir.

This booklet is the outcome of a collaborative work with the Belgian photographer Pierre Buch, within the framework of the European project Terra [In]cognita. Earthen Architectu-re in Europe. It gathers 60 photographs – 20 of them being part of a travelling exhibition – of traditional and contemporary architecture taken throughout France, Italy, Spain and Portugal, the four project partner countries. Pierre Buch delivers his own look, of a man sensitive to material, shapes and graphic lines of earthen architecture: a way to discover or rediscover this material of the past, looking ahead to the future.

Le travail du photographe Pierre Buch s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet européen Terra

[in]cognita – Architectures de terre en Europe dont le propos se base sur deux visées

complémentaires: d’une part, donner à connaître et valoriser le patrimoine architectural en

terre d’Europe et, d’autre part, établir un lien entre les possibilités de construction actuelles et

les apports des savoir-faire traditionnels autour du bâti en terre.

Les modes de construction en terre crue ont donné, de tous temps et jusqu’à une époque

récente, une architecture répandue dans la plupart des pays européens. Les qualités

thermiques de la terre crue et la disponibilité du matériau sur place en ont fait un choix

intéressant dans l’édification d’habitats. Ce patrimoine, peu connu et souffrant de la

déshérence des technologies de construction et d’entretien, ainsi que des savoir-faire

associés, se réduit chaque jour davantage ou subit des altérations irréversibles. Toutefois, des

recherches et des initiatives se multiplient en vue de réhabiliter l’image de la terre, et d’en

souligner les qualités constructives et les avantages environnementaux. Ses enjeux, relevant

à la fois de la sauvegarde d’un patrimoine vernaculaire exceptionnel et de la promotion d’une

architecture contemporaine innovante, méritent d’être davantage reconnus et transmis, à la

fois aux professionnels concernés, aux autorités de tutelle mais aussi aux citoyens.

Restait cependant à promouvoir des initiatives de sensibilisation visant à mieux faire

connaître la diversité de cet art de bâtir et ses applications actuelles. Tout en continuant à

cultiver la recherche scientifique, il s’agissait aussi de proposer au public un regard différent,

moins technique. Cette approche a été confiée au photographe belge Pierre Buch qui a

sillonné les routes du Piémont, de Normandie et de Midi-Pyrénées, d’Andalousie et de

Castille et de l’Alentejo à la découverte de ces architectures, sous la supervision autorisée des

partenaires scientifiques du projet. Cette collaboration inédite a permis de raconter, à travers

la photographie, une autre histoire, plus intimiste, celle des matières et des formes liées à la

construction en terre… avec ce supplément d’âme qui fait parfois toute la différence!

The work of the photographer, Pierre Buch, falls within the framework of the European

project Terra [in]cognita – Earthen architecture in Europe whose purpose is based on two

complementary aims: first to promote awareness and to give value to the earthen ar-

chitectural heritage of Europe, and secondly, to develop a link between current building

possibilities and the contributions of traditional know-how surrounding earthen building.

At all times and until recently, earthen construction methods created architecture wide-

spread in most European countries. The thermal qualities of raw earth and the on-site

availability of the material have made it an interesting choice in building habitats. Little

known and suffering from the loss of building and maintenance technologies as well as

the associated know-how, this heritage decreases every day or suffers irreversible chang-

es. However, research and initiatives are multiplying to rehabilitate the image of the art

of building with earth and highlight building qualities and environmental advantageous.

These issues, relevant to both the preservation of an exceptional vernacular heritage and

the promotion of an innovative contemporary architecture, deserve greater recognition

and dissemination among concerned professionals, authorities, but also citizens.

Nonetheless, it remained to promote educational initiatives aimed at rising awareness

about this art of building diversity and its current applications. While continuing to grow

scientific research, it was also relevant to propose to the public, a different look, less

technical. This approach has been entrusted to the Belgian photographer Pierre Buch,

who has travelled the roads of Piedmont, Normandy and Midi-Pyrenees, Andalusia and

Castile, and Alentejo to discover these architectures, under the supervision of the scien-

tific partners of the project. This unique collaboration has allowed the narration, through

photography, of another story, more intimate, on which materials and forms are linked

to earthen construction... with that added spirit that at times makes all the difference!

Voyageant depuis pas mal d’années, je pensais connaître un peu la Terre et… l’architecture de terre.

J’ai vécu dans des bâtiments en bauge, en pisé, en adobe, au Mali, au Mexique, en Syrie... mais jamais

en Europe.

Le titre et le sujet du projet m’ont donc intrigué. Et j’ai été de découvertes en découvertes. Quelle

variété!

Des typologies de bâtiments: de la cabane à outils au château impérial, de la ferme fortifiée au

rucher, de l’entreprise vinicole au palais Renaissance, du pigeonnier industriel à la villa minimaliste.

Des époques: du Moyen-âge à demain.

Des matières et des techniques: des briques d’adobe enchâssées de galets réguliers à la bauge sa-

turée de paille, depuis la coupe stratifiée du mur en pisé jusqu’au torchis des parois en colombage.

Et pourtant, il s’agit toujours de terre. Associée au bois, à l’acier, à la pierre, au verre, au béton…

Toujours la même et jamais semblable.

J’ai donc tenté de saisir la cohérence de cette infinie variété en travaillant sur l’aspect de la matière,

en soulignant sa beauté graphique et son étonnante capacité à capter les lumières.

Traveling for quite a few years, I thought I knew a little the Earth and… earthen architecture.

I lived in buildings made of cob, rammed earth, adobe, in Mali, in Mexico, in Syria... but never in Europe.

The title and theme of the project was intriguing. It was quite a discovery. What variety!

Typologies of buildings: from the tools shed to the imperial palace, from the fortified farm to

the apiary, from the winery to the Renaissance palace, from the industrial pigeon house to the

minimalist villa.

Eras: from the Middle Ages to tomorrow.

Materials and techniques: from adobe bricks embedded with pebbles, to cob saturated with straw,

from the stratified section of rammed earth wall to the timber frame walls filled with wattle and daub.

Yet, it is still earth. Associated with wood, steel, stone, glass, concrete...

Always the same and never similar.

Thus, I tried to capture the consistency of this infinite variety by working on the appearance of the

matter, stressing its graphic beauty and its amazing ability to capture the different shades of light.
