The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement and the outcome achieved by the end of the year.

Part B:
1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution:
During the last academic year, Mithibai College experienced physical growth and developments in the academic experience. Every attempt was made to achieve the goals and objectives that were set for the institute in the previous AQAR. Some of these are enlisted below.
Induction programs at the departmental level for the newly recruited teaching and non-teaching staff
With a view to making the transition to teaching in this college a smooth one, each department head is encouraged to hold an induction program for the newly recruited teaching and non-teaching staff. This includes such details as the formalities that need to be completed for various official purposes, the conduct of the examinations, invigilation during examinations, assessment and declaration of results as well as other issues pertaining to discipline and day-to-day functioning of the college.
Helping academically weaker students through performance improvement program, while providing space for development of high IQ students.
Academic achievement of students is the top priority of the college. A continuous development, implementation, and monitoring cycle are encouraged in the departments to facilitate the same. Performance Improvement Programs are conducted by various departments to collect and analyze student performance, set priorities for program improvements, rigorously use effective solution strategies, and institute ongoing monitoring of results. The above strategies provide a structured means to improve student academic performance.
The Departments of Statistics, Philosophy conduct multiple preliminary examinations for their T.Y. students in preparation for their impending University examinations.
Several departments including Microbiology, Zoology, English and Sociology conduct regular class tests that enable the faculty to evaluate the students.
Departments in the Science faculty provide for repeat performance of the difficult experiments in their subject so as to boost the confidence of the students.
Sensitizing the students to events and current issues and inducing them to evolve
their own opinion.
Recognizing the fact that it is a sensitized population that will eventually lead to the progress of the nation, the college encourages its staff to adopt various strategies to sensitize the students and create awareness among them.

Students were exposed to the richness of Iranian cinema and to Iranian society, through the thought provoking content of two films Children of Heaven by Majid Majidi and Offside by Jafar Panahi that were screened by the Film Society.
The Department of Psychology screened the film “Born in Brothels” for the students of TYBA in August 2010.The film dealt with a wide range of issues like child prostitution, life in red light areas and hope for sex workers’ children.
The Department of Hindi organised a debate in September 2010, jointly within Hindusthani Prachar Sabha. Twenty two students participated and voiced their thoughts on Ban on the Use of Mobiles in the College. Three of the best speakers were given prizes.
The Speakers’ Forum provides a platform to students to express their views and opinions on different issues through the medium of open discussions and debates. In the academic year 2010-11, the Forum organized the following programmes:
o The Forum organized a group discussion on “Peer Relationship amongst Students and Resultant Impact” was held in July 2010. The discussion was followed by an analysis on the issue by Ramola Thangiah.
o A discussion-cum-interactive session on “Branding Oneself” was held in July 2010. Dr. Parag Ajgaonkar spoke at length on the concept of branding and the essentials of branding one’s own personality. The talk was followed by a lively discussion.
o The Forum organized an open discussion on the controversial topic “Should Bandhs be Banned?” in August 2010.
o An open discussion on “Suicides: Causes and Prevention” was organized by the Forum. The open discussion was moderated by Ramola Thangiah and Archana Ambhore from the Department of Psychology, Mithibai College. They provided valuable insights into the causes of suicides and suggested several measures of prevention. Dr. Parag Ajgaonkar, Department of Commerce, Mithibai College also provided inputs during the discussions.
Enhancing the teacher-student relationship by encouraging accessibility to the
teachers.
The interpersonal behavior of teachers plays a pivotal part in directing the flow of teaching and learning in the classroom. It is essential, therefore, that teachers establish a rapport with students that will ensure smooth functioning of the teaching-learning process. With a view to ensuring this, the college has initiated the Mentoring Scheme, where each teacher is allotted a group of 30-40 students of the undergraduate classes. The mentor conducts regular meetings with his/her group and encourages the students to open up about their experience in the

college- both academic and non-academic. Feedback regarding the same is then given to the concerned authorities in order to effect the necessary corrections/ changes.
Encouraging departments to conduct programs as a part of the initiation of the Golden Jubilee celebrations that will span the academic years 2010-2011 and 2011-2012
The college stands on the threshold of a milestone in its brilliant history; the completion of 50 years of service to the community is indeed a cause for celebration. Many of the departments have initiated programs to commemorate the occasion.
On the occasion of “Golden Jubilee Celebrations” of Mithibai College, Department of Botany and Nisarg- Nature Club organized an event Vrikshavalli, Exhibition on Wonderful World of Plants with competitions in Bio-Jewellery, Bio-Rangoli, Nature Photography, etc in January 2011.
The Deparment of Psychology and the Psychology Association organized MIND LABYRINTH, a two-day fun filled festival to celebrate the golden jubilee year. Competitions like ‘Quote Out Loud’, ‘Quizzard’, a workshop on Dance Therapy were organized on 20th January 2011. Competitions on ‘Speakers Forum’ and ‘Twisted Tales’ along with a workshop on Do the Unexpected were organized in 21st January 2011. Stalls on Test-o-mania, Mind Games, Graphology, Color Therapy, Music and Dream analysis were put up along the ‘Maze’. On the spot games like ‘JAM’ and ‘Don’t Freak Out’ were also organised.
The Department of Zoology organized a five day hands on training workshop on Animal Tissue Culture. This workshop was sponsored by Lady Tata Memorial Trust & Anazeal Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd. for Postgraduate Teachers of Affiliated Colleges & Research Scholars. The workshop was attended by Teachers & Research Scholars from I.I.T., I.C.T. (formerly U.D.C.T.), Dr. D. Y. Patil University & Bharathiya Vidhyapeeth College of Pharmacy. The participants gained both knowledge and practical training under the guidance of eminent resource persons from ACTREC, Piramal Life Sciences, etc.
Enhancing the soft skills of the non-teaching staff to enable them in providing quality service to all the stake holders.
Training program was conducted by the department of Computer Sciences and Information Technology for Class III employees enhancing the computer skills with the goal of achieving 100% computer literacy among them, especially in light of the fact of new software programs being introduced for accountability, transparency and enhancing efficiency of college administration.

2. New academic programmes initiated (UG and PG):
The last academic year saw the beginning of various undergraduate and post graduate courses. The faculty of commerce has started courses like B.Com. (Banking and Insurance), B.Com. (Accounts and Finance) and B.Com. (Financial Markets) at the undergraduate level. The commerce faculty has also started the post- graduate course i.e. M.Com. Sanction has been received from the University to initiate post-graduate courses in the Arts stream like M.A (Psychology) and M.A (English Literature).
3. Innovations in curricular design and transaction:
To facilitate transformative learning in higher education, the college undertakes several initiatives.
The Department of Zoology is actively involved in the designing of syllabus for T.Y.B.Sc. A new syllabus is being introduced in “Entrepreneurial & Industrial Zoology”, which is student-centric and has the flexibility to suit the needs of urban and rural regions. The Head of the Department,
o Mr. Vinayak Dalvie, is the convenor for designing of the syllabi for F.Y.B.Sc., S.Y.B.Sc. & T.Y.B.Sc. (Zoology) Classes (all papers) of S.N.D.T. University.
o Dr. Hitesh Shingadia is the co – ordinator for M.Sc part 1 lectures. o Students of the Zoology department were taken on the following visits and
field trips-
Visit to Khadi and Village Industries Corporation (Vile Parle) for the students of S.Y.B.Sc. was organized in July 2010.
Educational visits were conducted to Aarey fish farm for students of T.Y.B.Sc. in August 2010 and Aarey Poultry Farm for the students of S.Y.B.Sc. in August 2010.
Nature trail was organized in Sanjay Gandhi National Park (Borivali) for students of T.Y.B.Sc. in August 2010.
A seven day educational tour was conducted to Ranthambore National Park and Keoladeo Ghana (Bharatpur) Wild life Sanctuary, Rajasthan for students of T.Y.B.Sc. & M.Sc. in November 2010.
One day excursion to Kihim beach (Alibaug) was organized for students from F.Y.B.Sc. to M.Sc. in January 2011.
Visit to Versova fish landing centre was organized for the students of M.Sc. Part II in February 2011.
Visit to National Institute of Oceanography was organized for the students of M.Sc. Part II in February 2011.
The Department of Philosophy transacts the syllabus using the audio-visual mode. Various movies relevant to ethical issues in the syllabus are shown to students in order to create awareness and sensitize them to these issues. This year the movie “Born into Brothels” was screened for the T.Y.B.A students.

On 27th July 2010, the Department of Sociology organized a screening of the movie Udaan for the TYBA students. The movie deals with the father-child relationship, the loopholes in the educational system and adolescent behavior.
Students of TYBA took up group projects pertaining to two burning issues like Socio-economic security of senior citizens in Mumbai and Attitudes towards girl child in Mumbai. Extensive fieldwork was undertaken including the visits to various NGOs and civil society organizations active in this area. Small documentaries based on issues pertaining to syllabus were screened in the classes for students of Foundation Course-I.
Students of SYBA and TYBA of Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology were taken on an educational trip to Keshav Srishti, at Gorai in August and September 2010. The visit included a trail in Nature Park with agricultural land, vermi-compost plant, Bio-gas Plant and medicinal species. The students also visited the Old age home situated in the same vicinity and interacted with the inmates. They were also taken to Pagoda- a Buddhist monastery to enlighten their knowledge about Buddhist religion and practice of Vipassana.
Curriculum is designed by the university. Whenever there are workshops to decide on the curriculum and on how to implement the same, concern staff members always participate. Mrs. Kshama shah, Ms. Panna Mehta, Ms. Archana Ambhore participated in a one day workshop on TYBA syllabus organized by Ruparel College. Mrs. Ramola Thangiah and Mrs. Keshmira Patel participated in a one day workshop on T.Y.B.Com. syllabus organized by Poddar College.
4. Interdisciplinary programmes started:
The five-day hands-on-training workshop on “Animal Tissue Culture” organized by the Department of Zoology was truly interdisciplinary. The participants for the same were representatives of different biological sciences. Dr. Geeta Narayan of the Department of Microbiology was a part of the organizing committee for the conduct of the workshop. Ms. Selina Shah and Dr. Geeta Narayan, both from the Department of Microbiology, were invited as resource persons to conduct practical session on Pharmaceutical Applications at the UGC-sponsored Refresher Course in Biological Science(Entrepeneurial & Industrial Biology)

Prof. Trusha Engineer, Prof. Vatsala Nambiar and Prof. Nilima Raval, attended a workshop at K.C.College on 18th August 2010, for the syllabus revision of FYBA and SYBA.
Prof. Khevana Desai attended a zonal workshop on “Gender Sensitization” jointly organized by Women’s Development Cell, University of Mumbai and Patuck-Gala College of Commerce and Management on 27th Januray, 2011 at Patuck-Gala College of Commerce and Management.
Panna Mehta successfully completed Orientation Program in October 2010 with ‘A’ grade at Staff Academy College, University of Mumbai, Kalina.
Archana Ambhore completed a two day basic course in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT), one individually and one with her student, Anjali Joshi, in June 2010.
Archana Ambhore completed a Certificate course in ‘Remedial Education’ in February 2011.
Archana Ambhore participated in an ‘Interaction Programme for Research Scholars and Postdoctoral Fellows of Social Sciences’ organized by the Staff Academy College, University of Mumbai, in the month of February 2011.
Archana Ambore completed a basic course in ‘Integrated Clinical Hypnosis’ from California Hypnosis Institute of India, under the guidance of Dr. Rajiv Naidu in the month of March 2011.
Archana Ambhore participated in an International Symposium on ‘Forgiveness and Healing Across Religions’ organized by St. Andrews College in the month of January 2011
Geeta Menezes successfully completed UGC sponsored Orientation Programme at Kalina University in Feb 2011.
Megha Prabhu attended a UGC- sponsored One- day national seminar in Model College, Dombivli on the theme of ‘ Indian Economic Reforms : Evaluation, Diagnosis and Forecast’ on 26th February 2011.
Dr. Shashirekha Sureshkumar also participated in a UGC-sponsored Three-day workshop on ‘An Interaction Programme for Research Scholars and Postdoctoral Fellows of Social Sciences’ from 8th to 10th March 2011.

8. Total number of seminars/workshops conducted:
A two day intercollegiate workshop on ‘Learning Disability’ was organized by the Department of Psychology on September 23rd and 24th2010. The objective of the workshop was to foster and understanding of L.D and create a foundation for higher studies in this field.
A four session workshop on ‘Job Analysis’ was conducted in the month of August by Ms. Amrita Phillips , Ms. Aditi Shevde, Ex-Mithibai students along with Ms. Panna Mehta in August, 2010.
Mr. Chaitanya Tamhane, Alumni, conducted a workshop on “Psychological Illusion” in September, 2010.
T.Y.B.Sc of Biotechnology Practical revised syllabus paper I and IV - July 2010 Biotechnology Research Meet on 11-12-2010
As a part of “Golden Jubilee Celebration” Department of Zoology conducted the much appreciated UGC sponsored Refresher Course on the innovative topic of ‘Entrepreneurial and Industrial Biology’ from 11th - 30th October 2010 granted by Academic Staff College, University of Mumbai.
Department of Zoology organized a five day hands on training workshop on ‘Animal Tissue Culture’. The participants gained knowledge & practical training under the guidance of eminent resource persons from ACTREC, Piramal Life Sciences, etc to

name the few. Dr. Meghna Talpade, Dr. Hitesh Shingadia & Dr. Geeta Narayan (Microbiology Dept.) were resource persons for conducting practical sessions in the ‘Animal Tissue Culture Workshop.
A Guest lecture was organized on the topic ‘Role of GIS and Remote Sensing in Environmental Management’ on Saturday, 29th January 2011. The guest speaker was Mr. Nikhil Deshpande, Executive Manager, Photogrammetry Division, Rolta India Ltd. Mumbai. The lecture was attended by students of Commerce, Science and BMS. Principal Dr. Kiran Mangaonkar presided over the function.

Dr Shailaja Nair, and Dr Kamaladevi Panicker from the Botany department completed a BCUD project for which the amount sanctioned was Rs 10,000.
Dr. S.D. Kamat and Ms. Rency. Thomas from the department of Biotechnology completed a BCUD minor research project titled “Novel methods of extraction and bioassay of phytochemicals”- Project no. APD/237/377, on 30th August 2010. Amount 20,000/-

Megha Prabhu, Deepa Jaydev, Neelima Rawal and Shripad Samant from various departments are members actively involved in DLLE as extension work teachers.
Ms. Khevana Desai was one of the main coordinator at Prakruti-a 3 day Bhavans Nature festival held on 21st-23rd Jan 2011. It was aiming towards sensitizing and informing the city about the wildlife and environmental catastrophes. Seven students of TYBA Sociology volunteered for the event and were appreciated as the most efficient volunteers by the organizers. The nature festival helped them to be more sensitized and aware about environmental problems and wild life
Dipesh Upadhayay is associated with the Swadhayay Movement where groups go to villages spreading the message of Bhagvad Gita, bringing about the inner transformation of man.
A campaign, Jaago - Let's collect India, is an annual event of N.S.S. Under this campaign, national flags which are found scattered on the streets are collected the day after Independence Day and Republic Day. The residents of building societies are also requested to collect flags thrown on the ground and deposit them with us. We award the organizations and individuals who deposit the highest number of flags.
International coastal cleanup drive is organized by N.S.S. to clean the sea coast by collecting plastics and removing litter. This is an awareness programme where the neighborhood is taken into confidence, that a clean environment is the need of the hour.
Shripad Samant served the Legislative Assembly in the Summer session by assisting the ministry of Water Supply and Sanitation.

We introduced wifi in the library for faculty and students. We purchased two copier machines for examination cell with the introduction of CBSGS. SAP was introduced for administration, accounts and admission process.

Computers and internet facilities for the staff are available in all the departments of science. For the Arts and Commerce faculty computer and internet access are available in the staff room. The students are allowed to use the IT lab for academic purposes. 29. Financial aid to students:
Students are offered and can avail freeships in accordance with university rules. There is several endowment prizes awarded to deserving candidates and students by the institution.

30. Activities and support from the Alumni Association:
Focus – exhibition of photographs was an exhibition which included works by current students and from the department of Biotechnology in 2010-11.
Feedback from the alumni on the course work helped to improve the transaction of the syllabus with innovative techniques. Every year the alumni come back to us for sharing their experience and guide the current students for techniques to study and perform better in the examination.
Ms. Ami Doshi- an alumni, delivered a lecture on positive thinking and personality development for the students of Foundation Course-I.
31 Activities and support from the Parent-Teacher Association:
The Department of Biotechnology has regular meetings with parents of F.Y., S.Y. and T.Y.B.Sc. students. Similarly the Department of Business Law conducts quarterly parents meeting to improve the students’ attendance and performance.
Though there is no formal parent teacher association but under the mentoring programme introduced, regular interaction with parents regarding their wards performance and attendance is done time to time by the sociology department. 32. Health services:
First Aid boxes are placed in the staff room and some of the departments. The students are taken to the hospitals nearby like Nanavati, Cooper, etc. in case of emergency.
