Synchrotron emission from shock-accelerated electrons. The X-rays are emitted by the highest energy electrons.Cosmic-ray protons have the same energy distribution as electrons until radiative losses start playing a role (not in SN 1006 ?).

Spectral modellingNorth East
South East
We fitted the spectra with a two-component model: • synchrotron emission from a cut-off electron power law (SRCUT)• thermal emission from a plasma out of ionisation equilibrium behind a shock (VPSHOCK) with variable abundances.
The interstellar absorption was fixed to NH = 5 1020 cm-2. The slope of the electron power-law was fixed to 2.2 (α = 0.6 in the radio). The normalisation of the synchrotron component was fixed using the radio data, and only the cut-off frequency was left free.
Cut-off frequencyWe have measured for the first time the spatial variations of the cut-off frequency of the synchrotron emission in SN 1006.
The azimuthal variations are very strong, and cannot be explained by variations of the magnetic compression alone.
This implies that the maximum energy reached by accelerated particles is higher at the bright limbs than elsewhere.
If we trust the TeV observations for B ~ 10 μG, the maximum energy reached at the bright limb is at least 70 TeV.
