To all school disciplines a separate chapter is devoted, each headed by a most charm-ing woodcut allegorically representing the discipline discussed. Extremely rare, the

first attempt in the Low Countries to publish an emblem book (not in Landwehr, which begins with emblemata published from 1542 onwards).

Unlike his Achipelago, Dapper’s Morea was published solely in Dutch. Amongst the many maps, plans and views, several of which are after Coronelli, are fine views of Corfu and Nauplion; the numismatic plates illustrate ancient coins from Corfu.

Rarissime première édition, les figures reprennent la majorité des peintures ornant le chœur de l’abbaye bénédictine de Lies-sies dans le nord de la France: portraits du Christ, de la Vierge Marie, des Pères de l’Eglise, des fondateurs des ordres religieux. Durant la Révolution, nombre de peintures du chœur ont été brûlées, et les autres disper-sées. Theodor Galle s’était marié dans cette église avec Catherina Moerentorf, petite-fille de Chr. Plantyn, en l’année 1598.

Illustrated with more than 500 woodcuts in the text, figurating plants and animals. Cut without loss of text on the upper margin of the title, rare stains, some foxing. As usual, this edition is bound with Mattio-

li’s Apologia adversus Amathum Lusitanum, published by Valgrisi in 1559. Contemporary German binding: blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards with beveled edges, boards entirely decorated with fillets, rolls, little tools and plates representing scenes from the Old and New Testament, central plate represent-ing the Annunciation with a gilt inscription “G.R.R.” above and the date 1562 underneath, on the superior board, the baptism of Christ on the inferior board, two metal clasps (one strap lacking), ribbed spine ornated with fillets, manuscript title on spine, one corner repaired.

Edition more complete than the previous ones, with many new figures. This renowned botani-cal treatise composted by Pierandrea Mattioli appeared for the first time in 1544, in Venice, in the form of an Italian translation of De materia medica of DIOSCORIDES, annotated by the author, without illustrations. It was

reprinted several times until 1552. The second part, Apologia adversus Amathum Lusitanum, appeared for the first time in the 1558 edition. The first illustrated edition, in Latin, was pub-lished only in 1554, in Venice, followed a year later by an Italian edition. The quality of the illustrations to the book won a huge success and many editions in Latin, Italian, German and Czech until the seventeenth century, to the point of appearing almost like a general flora (Mortan, History of botanical science, p. 154).

Jozsef Rippl-Ronai (1861-1927), peintre hon-grois, vivait à Paris à partir de 1887 jusqu’en 1902 et appartenait au groupe artistique Nabis avec des artistes comme Bonnard, Denis, Vuillard et Maillol.
