Verbs When using verbs you need to decide two things…

Who is doing the action (the subject of verb) When they are doing it (the tense of the verb)

Present Tense

You use this tense to talk about what you do (on a regular basis) or what you are currently doing…

e.g. I play/ I am playing To form the present tense you need to take the endings off the following endings from the original form of the verb (infinitive):

-er -ir -re

Past Tense You use this tense to talk about the following situations:

I played I have played

First of all, to form the past tense we need a pronoun (e.g. je, tu, il etc).

Then we need to use an auxiliary verb (a helping verb). In French this is either avoir (to have) or être (to be), before the main verb.

You can remember this by relating it to the past tense in English, e.g. we can say I have played as well as I played (‘have’ is the auxiliary verb).

Most past tense verbs use avoir but the following verbs use être. You can remember them using the acronym ‘DR MRS VANDERTRAMP’:

The last thing you need to do is to add the past participle (this is the equivalent of –ed in English) You create these by taking off:

e.g. J’ai joué/ il a regardé/ nous avons fini/ils ont vendu/je suis allé(e) Don’t forget that with all verbs that use être, you need to add ‘e’ on the end if you are a girl or if you are describing something feminine and an ‘s’ if you are talking about more than one person. e.g. je suis allé(e)/elle est allée/ nous sommes allé(e)s

Future Tense There are two ways to talk about the future in French:

I will play (simple future) I am going to play (near future)

To form the simple future tense you need to take the whole verb (the infinitive) and add the ending endings:
