    NEW PLANS FOFT BELEM AREA:

Last week four missionary families working in the Belem areamet together to discuss the work being done and the future plansfor this area. The result of this meeting has been the adoptingof plans for several new projects. An organization called SEVIChas been formed and will be registered with the government. This name comes fron the Portugese words which designateEvangelizing Society of the churches of Christ. The purpose ofsuch a group is to enable us to do things as a group which wecould not do individually. Plans are to initiate a weekly radioprogram, a correspondence course, a periodical to be used as ateaching medium, and a Bible School where individuals andgroups can be taught Bible courses. A new -congregation in Belemcity proper is our goal. The aim of all these projects is to get-ppnple to ^tudy-the -BiMe-^and-Js:nQML.what i t says.

These projects will necessitate a pooling of efforts andfinances by the participating members. The initial phases of theseprojects are now being carried out and we hope to begin themabout the middle of May. Participating members at this timeare the Dick Robisons, Bob Smiths, Jim Morelands, and us.Please pray for us that these new projects may be used of God to

    A GROWING CHURCH

SincL. our . fuarival m Belem area , we have beenworshipping with the church which meets at Oteiro Road inIcoaraci. This congregation has a history dating back to thefirst missionary family who came to this area. Her history isdotted with periods of success and, sadly, with times of stagnancy and decay. Recently we have been privileged to seethis group of Christians seem to literally rise up and take the"bull by the horns" and start to move. A new plan consistingof five commissions has been adopted which gives every member a position of responsibility in the church. Five men headthese commissions and would be considered the back-bone of thechurch. It is interesting to note that there are no older men in thecongregation and that the leaders are all in the twentythirtyyears of age group. There are as yet no elders or deacons inthe congregation. This gives plenty of youthful vigor but noto enlist members of the congregation as tithers and the resulthas been an average 300%increase in offerings per week overthe period just prior to this pro^am. By furnishing their ownlabor these Christians have been able to buy materials to builda sidewalk in front of the building, put in a baptistry, and doa complete paint job; all without special financial help fromany missionary. Brazil has gone through a majo!*' shake up in governmentbrought about by former president Goulart's strong communist leanings. The sentiment of the country as a wholeseems to be anti-cummunist and things could take a turnfor the better now that he is gone. Economically Brazilis still very unstable. The next few months will tell the taleof how well she can straighten out some of the political andeconomic mess that has been breeding since 1956. Wepersonally have been little involved in this transfer of powerin government but what the new government does willdefinitely bear on our future work here.

JOINT PROJECTSIn Brazil thereare several joint projects carried on thTOUghthe co-operation of several missionary families in the variousareas. One of these is the Bible Institute of Para which weplan to work with in the future. Another is called APLICwhich is organized to print and distribute Christian literaturethroughout Brazil. It has become one of the best in Brazilwith denominational groups usingtheir SundayScool literaturein many places. Plans are for expanded operations this year. Both oftheseare financed by gifts from the various missionaryfamilies in Brazil who wish to back them. We feel that both

    FOUND. AT LAST

After much searching and prajdng we feel we haye foundan adequate house for our family to live in. It is located rightin the city of Belem. We feel very for tunate in finding thishouse since i t is usually hard to find a decen t house withoutpaying a huge amount of money. Our first rent payment comes due in May and then we will feel the house is ours touse. We are looking forward to July when we can move in.Our plans are to remain in the David Bayless home herein Icoaraci until they return in July. The owner of thehouse is painting it inside and out and completely cleaning itso we will not have to do these things. Our big job will beto screen all of the windows. This will be quite a job toobecause it is a two story house with several large windows. We have purchased all of the furniture we will need exceptfor a washing machine. This will be a big item but a necessaryone especially with the two children. Please pray for us as wemake our plans to move. We want to be an effec tive witnessto our neighbors in Belem.

    BELIEVE IT OR NOT

For the past couple of months it has been inpossible toget coffee here in Belem except by paying the exorbant pric.esof the black market. It just isn't available in part of the lando f cof fee .

We dedicate this section of our newsletter to the pride andjoy of our lives - our kids - in hopes that some of their anticsand accomplishments will be of interest to you.DEBBIE: Recently at our house two other families were visitingus and the kids were having a big time. Debbie ran in wherewe were talking and called m2 Stan. I told her that I thoughtmy name was Daddy. She said, "Yes". I asked her why shehad called me Stan. She said, "Because that's Portuguese".DAVID: Has started to walk and after the first few shaky dayshas developed into a first class pest. Seems like he gets intoeverything. He pulls books off the bookcase, dishes out of thecabinets, and magazines off the stands. The other day he fellinto the glass door of one of our kitchen cabinets and cut hishead a little, but he still managed to dump a box of cocoa out

    A CHURCH SERVICE IN Y OU R H OM E?

The air was cool and damp last Saturday night as we arrived in Marambaia fora special open air church service. We went to a part of the city that we ha d neverseen before. There were no electric l ights but here and there we saw th e flicker ofsmall kerosene lamps in th e houses and along the road. The servi ce was at the smallmud-brick home of one the church members . A kerosene pressure light was placedon a table out in front of the house and several crude wooden benches were placed ina semicircle around the table. People arrived like unseen shadows until they werewithin th e glare of th e lantern. The purpose of th e service was to g lo ri fy God and tes ti fy to the people ofthe neighborhood about Jesus. A good many church members came as well as neighbors

and passing visitors. A ro usi ng so ng serv ice was foll owed by sp eci al mu si c andthen preaching by one of th e men of the church. The service ended two hours afterit began with the host family serving Brazilian coffee and cookies. We could not help but thank God as we drove home that night for the privilegeof being here to help these people know Je sus and share in a service that was car riedout under their impulse and planning. We also wondered about how many of ourAmerican brothers would plan and promote a c hur ch service in their home, ho pin g toattract people to th e message of Christ???
