WinCC flexible consists of three components:

Engineering System The Engineering System is the software with which you carry out all the

    necessary configuring tasks.

Runtime WinCC flexible Runtime is the software for process visualization. WithRuntime, you execute the project during process operation.

Options You can flexibly expand the basic functionality of WinCC flexible with options.A special license is required for each option. Options are available both for theEngineering System and for Runtime.

The options depend on the target device used. An operator panel that does notsupport a specific functionality also cannot use the associated option.

    The Engineering System

With the WinCC flexible Engineering System, you configure operator interfacesfor operating and monitoring machines and plants. The relevant configuringdata are stored in the project database.

Editors WinCC flexible has a special editor for every configuring task.

A basic distinction is made between graphical editors such as the picturenavigation editor, and table editors such as the variable editor.

Work area In the Work Area, you edit the objects of the project with the editors started. Allelements of WinCC flexible are arranged around the work area.

Project window In the Project window, you access the project data. The editors available to you

depend on the WinCC flexible edition used and the operator panel to be

configured. In the Project window of WinCC flexible, you always see only the

editors that are supported by the current operator panel. This makes

    configuring simple and clear.

Properties window In the Properties window, you edit the properties of objects such as pictureobjects. The Properties window is available in certain editors only.

Task w indow The Task window displays system messages that are created when a project is

    generated, for example.

Object w indow The editor elements you have selected in the Project window are displayed in

the Object window, enabling fast access to the required objects.

Tool window The Tool window contains different types of objects that are frequently needed

in process pictures and it enables access to libraries.

    Scalability

Scalability When you process projects for different operator panels with WinCC flexible, the function range adapts to that of the operator panel during configuring. Adifferent number of functions is available depending on the operator panel.

You configure only those functions that are supported by the operator panelselected.

This means you can use one project for several target devices. If you changethe target device, only the project data view changes, so no configured objectsare deleted, only removed from view.

Interface In WinCC flexible, you can individually configure the position and behavior ofwindows and symbol bars.

Configuration of the work environment of WinCC flexible is linked to the userlogged on to Microsoft Windows. When the project is saved, the positions and

behavior of windows and symbol bars are also automatically saved.

Engineering Option WinCC flexible / ChangeControl

The increasing complexity of modern automation projects requires constantfunction expansions and improvements during their development and alsowithin the scope of service and maintenance.

WinCC flexible projects are also subject to a continuous process ofmodification and improvement, necessitating the use of a version managementsystem. This is implemented in WinCC flexible with the "ChangeControl" optionavailable from the Advanced edition.

Version management With version management, you can store and manage the development stagesof your project as project versions. If required, in the event of data loss, forexample, you can fall back on an older development stage and re-build on thatbasis.

Version management enables later correction of older project stages. This isnecessary when an error has to be corrected in an older project version that is

already in use in Runtime. However, projects are usually further developed inthe intervening period. The error can be corrected in the older project versionwithout affecting the current project stage.

Version comparison It is also possible to compare the current project version with an older one. Theresult of the comparison is a table listing the modified objects.

Modification logbook The modification logbook can be switched on during configuring. This logs allmodifications made to the project in a central log file.

    Integration into STEP 7

If you use a SIMATIC controller and you have installed the STEP7 configuringsoftware on your system, you can integrate WinCC flexible into SIMATICSTEP7.

Benefits With integrated configuring, you access the database that you created when

configuring the controller with SIMATIC STEP7. This gives you the following

    benefits:

Management You can use the SIMATIC Manager as the central control point for creating,

editing and managing WinCC flexible projects.

Communication The communication parameters of the controller are pre-assigned when you

create the WinCC flexible project, and they are defined again in SIMATIC

STEP7 in the event of changes.

Symbol access When configuring variables and range pointers, you can access the STEP7

symbols direct in WinCC flexible. In the WinCC flexible variable dialog, just

select the STEP7 symbol with which you want to link a variable. Changes to

the symbol table in SIMATIC STEP7 are updated in WinCC flexible.

Messages When configuring messages in SIMATIC STEP7, the stored texts and

attributes are saved to the database shared with WinCC flexible. When the

project is generated, WinCC flexible automatically imports the required data

and transfers them later to the operator panel.
