Montrésor, listed as « One of the Most Beautiful Villages in France », is your next stop to explore the village, its lanes, surrounding countryside, the Indrois riverbanks and Chemillé Lake. Walk among local legends.

Château Legend has it that Prince Gontran and his squire rested at the foot of the mountain. The squire was dreaming of a beautiful princess when he woke up to see a lizard going into a channel in the rock and coming out covered in gold. That’s how the squire and Gontran found fabulous treasure. Gontran had a castle built on Montrésor (treasure mountain) and his squire became the ruler and could marry the beautiful princess of his dreams. The yellow route starts in front of Tourist Information Head for the château. The views of Indrois Valley are incredible. Take the Ruelle des Roches to reach the riverbanks.

Saint-Roch ChapelRue Xavier Branicki, Saint-Roch Chapel was once a pilgrimage site. It housed a statue of Saint Roch in pilgrim’s clothing with a dog. People prayed to him when they had leg problems. You’ll see a depiction of John the Baptist in the same street in the niche of a house’s gable. Women struggling to conceive used to pray to the statue to give them a child.

Ancient aqueduct Leave the village on Rue Grande. Fork right on the road to Loches towards the post office and follow the old railway line. A few hundred metres later, the hillside on your left is teeming with mysterious arches that were believed to hide treasure and lead to Liget Chartreuse Abbey. We now know that these arches are the relics of an aqueduct that channelled water to a small bygone town between Montrésor and Chemillé-sur-Indrois in Roman times.Turn right at the crossroads and take the softly sloping path then take a left and a right.

Barratault FountainA fountain that performs miracles lies ahead at the foot of the hill. Legend has it that if you dip your finger in the spring then you’ll look 7 years younger ! This is Barratault Fountain, the fountain of youth.

Indrois River Continue your way along the Indrois River. People used to stop children from going to the river and drowning by saying : « don’t go near or the witch will eat you! »

Chemillé-sur-IndroisThe village of Chemillé-sur-Indrois lies ahead. It may be famous for its lake but the church is also worth a visit. It houses a statue of Saint Hugh who people prayed to relieve gas and cradle cap in babies !Cross the Indrois and carry on along the road to Beaumont-Village and take the first path on the right.

La Verrerie woodsTurn left and go along La Verrerie woods. Ditches and embankments here have always sparked people’s imaginations. Some people can see traces of Roman camps here. Others say that it was the English building low walls during the One Hundred Years’ War. There’s actually a valley nearby called Prairie des Anglées (pronounced like «English» in French) !

Spanish roadGo through the hamlet of La Robinière. You’ll end up on the Grand Chemin, the local name given to the road running from Montrésor to Bléré. It’s the old Spanish road that ran through Montrésor in the early 17th century. In the Middle Ages it probably wasn’t unusual to see pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela here.

Beaumont-Village woodsTurn right and carry on until you reach a bridge. Take a right again. You’re on the edge of Beaumont-Village woods. Legend has it that one stormy night a long time ago, a cart was on a path through this forest when, all of sudden in a flash of light, the ground crumbled beneath the cart’s wheels. The ground swallowed up the cart and its passengers in an instant.

MontrésorFork right after a deer pen and continue on your way back to Montrésor to end this legendary outing.
