Il y a toujours une voie à prendre,Et une solution à chaque problème,

Et pour chaque obstacle une parade à trouver.

Une vérité qui n’est pas nouvelle, comme on dit, c’est la vérité de La Palice. On a pourtant tendance à l’oublier alors il faut la rappeler, bien fort. Tom Hugo écrit, compose et chante ses titres. Comme on dit, il « connaît la musique » et c’est le moins qu’on puisse dire. Ainsi, sur son premier single « Open Up Your Eyes », il la thématise sur des mélodies enjouées et nous encourt à saisir la formidable chance qui sommeille en chacun de nous, même dans les moments difficiles. « Open your mind for new adventures » voilà à quoi il nous convie et c’est comme si Tom Hugo s’était lui-même pris au mot lors de son voyage ambitieux vers l’Olympe de la Pop.

Enfant déjà, le jeune Norvégien ne rêvait que de ça : faire fondre la glace scandinave de son pays sous les projecteurs étincelants de sa carrière. Tout lui était bon : les fêtes de famille, celles de l’école, ses premières expériences dans des groupes de musique – on ne peut pas s’empêcher de constater que ses débuts artistiques sont des plus classiques et pourtant, ils auraient presque pris fin avant de n’avoir vraiment commencé… Le père de Tom, en effet, voulait comme de nombreux parents le préparer à la dureté de la vie, il avait donc pour son fils des projets d’avenir bien différents de ceux liés à une carrière internationale de musicien. Il y aurait presque réussi mais c’était sans compter sur l’irrésistible envie de Tom et son besoin impétueux de faire sauter toutes les entraves bourgeoises pour plonger dans l’aventure de la vie plutôt incertaine d’un musicien professionnel. Comme on dit, il y a toujours une voie à prendre et Tom Hugo a choisi la sienne.

La sienne lui a fait quitter sa ville natale de Kristiansand pour Hambourg, la grande métropole où le jeune artiste de 31 ans a planté sa tente depuis voilà quatre ans. Ce changement géographique a certes laissé quelques traces dans sa création artistique ; son premier album « Sundry Tales » ne nie en rien ses origines scandinaves mais ne s’y limite en aucun cas : l’album est empreint de sonorités palpables et vibre d’un ton international sans négliger pour autant toutes les exigences que Tom se donne pour un album très personnel.

« Ces touches personnelles ont des origines très différentes : ce sont des histoires de famille, des relations à problèmes, des instants uniques d’un bonheur parfait ou d’une immense tristesse. Parfois, ce sont aussi les histoires de mes amis, je me mets à leur place et j’en ressens les sentiments que je traduis plus tard en touches personnelles dans mes chansons. » nous avoue Tom Hugo pour expliquer comment il écrit ses textes avant d’ajouter en riant : « Il m’arrive souvent de transformer leur histoire en y ajoutant un peu de la mienne pour que mes amis puissent continuer de dormir en paix sans avoir à craindre que leur histoire soit dévoilée au monde entier ». Un geste plein de délicatesse, de l’amitié, la vraie.

La variété des genres au niveau musical s’accorde bien avec Tom Hugo. Une réalité dont on retrouve l’équivalent dans le titre de l’album. Ce passionné de pêche et de cuisine nous confie alors pour expliquer son choix : « Je l’ai intitulé « Sundry Tales » parce que ce petit mot « Sundry » reflète à mon avis parfaitement bien toute la richesse des facettes des différents titres de mon album. Que vous dire de plus ? les morceaux ressemblent à la vie que je mène : il y a des jours pleins d’espoir, remplis de bonheur et d’autres plus tristes et plus douloureux ».

Le monde de Tom est tellement grand, sa créativité musicale tellement forte et son énergie si intensive que d’autres artistes y ont aussi participé. Des musiciens auxquels Tom Hugo soumet des idées, avec lesquels il collabore ou pour lesquels il écrit des textes, passionnants comme les siens. Mais Tom Hugo profite aussi de ces échanges, de ces rencontres comme avec Emma Rohan de Londres ou encore l’Américain John Lewis Parker qui a déjà travaillé avec succès avec le groupe Chicago et Dolly Parton. Sans oublier la rencontre extraordinaire avec Mortan Harket du groupe A-Ah, un groupe idyllique de sa jeunesse qui a sans nul doute influencé Tom et son amour de la musique pop. « quand je travaille avec d’autres artistes qui écrivent eux aussi, les morceaux prennent toujours une autre direction que si j’y avais travaillé tout seul. Il s’y greffe d’autres préférences, de nouvelles influences, d’autres expériences et la chanson en tire un côté encore plus riche et plus passionnant - pour moi et aussi pour les autres ». Son horizon musical s’en trouve élargi et on peut l’entendre sur son premier album – même si Tom a écrit seul la plupart de ses textes. Cependant, la richesse des styles, son contenu, l ‘échange entre les musiciens et surtout la ferveur intacte que donne Tom Hugo à son premier album « Sundry Tales » aurait été autrement sans la communication permanente avec d’autres collègues musiciens.

Tom Hugo a travaillé à ses débuts pendant quatre longues années. Quatre années qui ont accompagné les différentes phases de la vie du jeune Norvégien et suivi fidèlement ses différentes influences de style et de création artistique. Le résultat ne se fait plus attendre. Il faut l’écouter, bien sûr mais pas seulement sur le fameux premier single « Open Up Your Eyes », retrouvez aussi ce morceau enjoué « Wildest Man Alive » - une chanson bourrée de propre ironie sur la virilité et le côté « petit chéri à sa maman ». Ecoutez encore « Be Somebody » où Tom Hugo parle de l’épanouissement de soi, un thème qui touche chacun d’entre nous. Alors, c’est bien une chanson très personnelle puisqu’elle décrit sans conteste la vraie raison de toutes les actions et conséquences artistiques de Tom mais elle renferme aussi une valeur universelle inaliénable qui fait que chacun se sentira concerné. La chanson par sa légèreté et son entrain joyeux nous va droit au cœur et saura à coup sûr sauver du désarroi les journées même les plus sombres.

Pas de surprise, il est vrai, puisque l’expression allemande «Ohrwurm », mot pour mot « vers d’oreille » qui signifie en français « un air qui ne sort plus de la tête » fait partie du vocabulaire préféré du jeune homme. « Il y a en allemand des mots incroyablement cool et surprenants et le « Ohrwurm » en fait partie, je le trouve tout simplement génial » déclare Tom enthousiaste. « On n’a pas tous ces mots en norvégien ».

Alors celui qui aura plaisir à découvrir son premier album remarquera bien vite que Tom Hugo a su assimiler au plus profond de lui-même cet « Ohrwurm » incroyable, comme si c’était le sien. Parce que, même si l’expression n’existe pas dans son pays, cela ne signifie surtout pas que Tom ne soit pas capable de la transcrire quand même et de si belle façon !

Au début, on disait comment déjà, ah oui : il y a toujours une voie à prendre.Et celle qu’a choisie Tom Hugo ira très loin.

Es gibt immer einen Weg.Für jedes Problem gibt es eine Lösung.

Und für jedes Hindernis gibt es Mittel, um sich darüber hinwegzusetzen.

Diese Erkenntnis ist nun wahrlich nicht neu; eine Binsenweisheit, wie man so schön sagt. Und doch gerät sie häufig genug in Vergessenheit, um immer mal wieder lautstark daran erinnern zu müssen. Auch Singer/Songwriter Tom Hugo hat entsprechende Erfahrungen gemacht, kann im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes ein Lied davon singen und tut das auch auf: Auf seiner aktuellen Single „Open Up Your Eyes“ thematisiert er zwischen mitreißenden Melodiebögen und vertonter Eingängigkeit die Schönheit der Chance, die in jedem noch so ausweglos erscheinendem Augenblick schlummert. „Open your mind for new adventures“ heißt es da in einer Zeile – und es scheint fast so, als hätte Tom Hugo sich für seine ambitio-nierte Reise in den Pop-Olymp selbst beim Wort genommen.

Schon als kleines Kind hat der in Norwegen geborene Tom Hugo davon geträumt, die skandinavische Kälte seiner Heimat durch eine Karriere im gleißenden Scheinwerferlicht zum Schmelzen zu bringen. Familienfeste, Schulfeiern, erste Erfahrungen in eigenen Bands – man kommt nicht umhin, die ersten Schritte seiner künstlerischen Laufbahn als klassisch zu bezeichnen; und dabei wäre sie beinahe schon zu Ende gewesen, bevor sie überhaupt richtig angefangen hat. Denn wie so viele andere Elternteile auch, hat Toms Vater anfänglich noch versucht, seinem Sohn den Traum von einer internationalen Musikerkarriere auszureden und ihn stattdessen auf die unbestreitbare Härte des wahren Lebens einzuschwören. Fast wäre ihm das auch gelungen, doch Toms Drang, die festgezurrten Fesseln der Bürgerlichkeit zu sprengen und sie gegen die Abenteuerlichkeit des unsiche-ren Lebens als Berufsmusiker zu tauschen, war einfach zu stark. Wie gesagt: Es gibt immer einen Weg. Und Tom Hugo hat ihn für sich gefunden.

Geführt hat ihn dieser Weg aus seiner norwegischen Heimatstadt Kristiansand in die Millionenmetropole Hamburg, wo der 31-jährige seit nunmehr vier Jahren seine kreativen Zelte aufgeschlagen hat. Und diese geografische Veränderung hat auch in seiner Kunst unüberhörbare Spuren hinterlas-sen. Nicht, dass er seine skandinavische Herkunft auf seinem aktuellen Debütalbum „Sundry Tales“ verleugnen würde, aber er lässt sich nicht einzig und allein darauf beschränken. Die Platte ist geprägt von einem greifbaren Vibe spürbarer Internationalität, ohne dabei jedoch Toms Anspruch außer Acht zu lassen, eine persönliche Platte machen zu wollen.

„Dieser persönliche Aspekt hat die verschiedensten Ursprünge: Familiengeschichten, Beziehungsprobleme, Momente unfassbaren Glücks oder allumfassender Traurigkeit. Manchmal kommt dieser persönliche Aspekt aber auch dadurch zustande, dass ich mich in die Situa-tion von Freunden hineinversetze und deren Gefühle in einen Song packe“, erklärt Tom seine Herangehensweise beim Schreiben neuer Stücke und fügt lachend hinzu: „Häufig verändere ich deren Erzählungen aber noch ein wenig oder füge eigene Erfah-rungen hinzu, damit meine Freunde nachts auch weiterhin ruhig schlafen können und keine Angst davor haben müssen, dass ihre persönlichen Geschichten plötzlich vor der ganzen Welt ausgebreitet werden.“ Ein feiner Zug. Wahre Freundschaft eben.

Der inhaltlichen Vielfalt der Platte wird Tom Hugo auch auf musikalischer Ebene gerecht. Ein Umstand, der bereits im Albumtitel seine Entsprechung findet. „Ich habe die Platte ‚Sundry Tales’ genannt, weil das süße, kleine Wort ‚Sundry’ aus meiner Sicht sehr schön den Facettenreichtum zwischen den Songs beschreibt“, erklärt der leiden-schaftliche Angler und passionierte Koch den Grund für die Namensgebung. „Was soll ich sagen, die Stücke sind wie die Tage in meinem Leben: Es gibt hoffnungsvolle und glückliche, aber auch traurige und schmerzvolle.“

Die Gefühlswelt von Tom Hugo ist so groß, sein musikalischer Schaffensdrang so stark und seine kreative Kraft so intensiv, dass er auch andere Künstler daran partizipieren lässt. Mitmusiker, denen er Ideen liefert, mit denen er kollaboriert und für die er genauso passioniert Stücke schreibt wie für sich selbst. Doch auch Tom Hugo profitiert im Zuge dessen von den Menschen um ihn herum; Musiker und Songwriter wie Emma Rohan aus London oder dem Amerikaner John Lewis Parker, der bereits erfolgreich mit Chicago und Dolly Parton zusammengearbeitet hat. Nicht zu vergessen die aufregende Zusammenarbeit mit Morten Harket von a-ha, dem Idol seiner Jugend und wichtiger Einfluss für Toms Verständnis von Popmusik. „Wenn ich mich mit anderen Songschreibern zusammentue, nehmen die Stücke stets eine andere Richtung, als wenn ich bloß alleine daran gearbeitet hätte. Es kommen andere Vorlieben, neue Einflüsse und Erfahrungen hinzu, und das hält die Songs stets spannend – für mich, aber auch für Andere.“ Und dieser Fakt hat zu einer Erweiterung seines musi-kalischen Horizonts geführt, die auch auf Toms Debütalbum zu hören ist – wenngleich er den Großteil der darauf enthaltene Stücke allein geschrieben hat.Doch der stilistische und inhaltliche Facettenreichtum, der Austausch mit anderen Musikern und vor allem die ungebrochene Inbrunst, mit der Tom Hugo sich auf „Sundry Tales“ präsentiert, wäre ohne die permanente Kommunikation mit Künstlerkollegen sicherlich anders ausgefallen.

Vier lange Jahre hat Hugo an seinem Debüt gearbeitet. Vier Jahre, in deren Verlauf er durch verschiedene Lebensphasen gegangen ist und in denen die unterschiedlichsten sti-listischen Einflüsse Einzug in den kreativen Schaffensprozess des gebürtigen Norwegers erhalten haben. Und das Ergebnis lässt sich hören. Natürlich. Und zwar nicht nur auf der besagten ersten Single „Open Up Your Eyes“, sondern auch in einem Stück wie dem mitreißenden „Wildest Man Alive“ – ein selbstironischer Song über Männlichkeit und Müttersöhnchen. Oder im treibenden „Be Somebody“, in dem Tom Hugo den Wunsch nach Selbstverwirklichung thematisiert, der in jedem von uns schlummert. Ein Song, der wahnsinnig persönlich ist, weil er den wahren Grund für Toms künst-lerisches Werken und Wirken umschreibt; gleichzeitig aber auch eine unabdingbare Allgemeingültigkeit besitzt, durch die sich jeder angesprochen fühlt; ein Stück, das trotz seiner Eingängigkeit durch die fröhlichen Harmonien zu Herzen geht und dennoch genug Leichtigkeit besitzt, um einen beschwingt über jeden noch so düsteren Tag zu retten.

Kein Wunder also, dass Tom den Begriff „Ohrwurm“ zu seinen deutschen Lieb-lingswörtern zählt. „Es gibt im Deutschen wirklich wahnsinnig viele coole Worte, aber ‚Ohrwurm’ finde ich besonders toll“, schwärmt Tom. „Das gibt es bei uns in Norwegen nämlich nicht.“

Doch wer nun in den Genuss von Toms Debütalbum „Sundry Tales“ kommt, der wird schnell fest-stellen, dass er diesen Begriff dermaßen verinnerlicht hat, als hätte er ihn erfunden. Denn nur, weil das Wort in seinem Heimatland nicht existiert, heißt das noch lange nicht, dass er die Bedeutung dahinter nicht umsetzen könnte.

Wie hieß es eingangs doch so schön: Es gibt immer einen Weg.Und der von Tom Hugo führt ganz steil nach oben.

This realisation is really nothing new; a universal truth, as a matter of fact - so to say. And yet, this truism is often enough forgotten, requiring repeated and vocal reminder to call our attention to it. Singer-songwriter Tom Hugo has been through all this before and can tell a thing or two about it – which he does on his current single „Open Up Your Eyes“, employing captivating melodic lines and a smooth infectiousness, airing the theme of the singular beauty of that spark of hope hidden in every situation, no matter how hopeless, a golden opportunity there for the taking for those who only need to get up the courage to do so. „Open your mind for new adventures“ goes one of the lines of the song – and it almost seems as if none other than Tom Hugo seems to have taken up his own word for it, meeting the challenge he has posed himself and embarking on his valiant quest for some Olympian height of pop music.

It was already as a child that Tom Hugo, who was born in Norway, had dreamed of trading the Scandinavian chill of his home country for the tropic heat of a career in the limelight. Family festivities, school parties, the age of growing pains spent in his own bands – one cannot avoid designating the salad days of Tom Hugo’s artistic flowering as to be quite typical - and yet, his promising career had been in danger of coming to a lamentable halt even before it had properly started; then as is common among many parents, Tom’s father initially advised his son from pursuing the dream of an international career in music, enjoining him instead to come to terms with the undeniable and inevitable hardships of real life. And he might have succeeded with his well-intentioned fatherly advice, had it not been for Tom’s tenacious will to break the bonds of a bourgeois lifestyle, trading its numbing security for the exciting adventure of a professional musician’s precarious existence. As already mentioned; there is always a way. And Tom Hugo had found it.

And this way has lead him out of his small Norwegian hometown of Kristiansand to the teeming city of over a million souls, Hamburg, where the 31-year-old has lived for four eminently creative years now. The move to Hamburg had been a sea change which subsequently left its unequivocal mark on Tom’s art. Not that he disavows his Scandinavian origins on his current debut album, ‚Sundry Tales‘ – it’s just that he simply refuses to be restricted to them. The record is one cut above the rest for reason of a distinctive vibe of consummate cosmopolitanism which nonetheless does

not lessen Tom’s endeavour to make it a personal album.

„This personal aspect has diverse origins: family affairs, problematic relationships, and moments of indescribable joy or encompas-sing sadness. Sometimes, this personal aspect comes about when I put myself in one of my friend’s shoes and put his feelings into a song“, states Tom, explaining his approach to writing new songs and adds, smiling, „I often change their stories a bit or add my own experiences to make sure my friends could still sleep nights and not be afraid that their highly personal affairs are exposed for all the world to see.“ Now that’s true a true friend for you!

Tom Hugo’s musicianship does full justice to the diversity of themes showcased in the album, a fact that is already evident even judging by the title alone. „I named the album ‚Sundry Tales‘ because I think that sweet little slip of a word ‚sundry‘

perfectly and concisely describes the multifarious nature of the diverse songs in the album“, explains the impassioned angler and amateur cook in connection with his choice of title for the album. „What more can I say, the tracks are like days in my

life. There are hopeful and joyful ones. There are also those which are sad and pain-filled.“

The amplitude of Tom Hugo’s emotional world is so great, the creative imperative behind his music so strong, his creative power so intense, that he could permit other artists to take part. These are his musician comrades in arms which he regales with his ideas,

with whom he collaborates and for whom he writes songs with the same exceeding passion he writes them for himself. Though it is also Tom who benefits from working with his confreres; the likes of musicians and songwriters such as Emma

Rohan of London or the American John Lewis Parker who has successfully worked with Chicago and Dolly Parton – not to mention the exciting collaboration with a-ha’s Morten Harket, idol of Tom Hugo’s youth and important

influence to Tom’s conception of pop music. „Whenever I join forces with other songwriters the pieces take a different direction in contrast to pieces I work on alone. Other predilections, new influences and

experiences come to the fore adding suspense to the songs - not only for me, but also for the listener.“ And this fact has led to the expansion of Tom’s musical horizon – this

you could hear distinctly in his debut album – even though Tom wrote the major part of the songs by himself. Nonetheless, the rich diversity of style and themes, the interplay of talent with other musicians and above all, the unbeatable intensity with which Tom Hugo presents himself and his art to the world in ‚Sundry Tales‘ would certainly have not achieved such heights of excellence without constant interaction with his musician associates.

Hugo’s debut album is a labour of love which took four years to complete - four years in the course of which he had been through different stages of life and in which the most diverse stylistic influences were brought to bear on the creative processes of this Norwegian-born artist. And, of course, the results are well worth hearing, such as, not only the first single release, ‚Open up your Eyes‘ but also the catchy ‚Wildest Man Alive‘ a tongue-in-cheek take on macho-manhood and being a mama’s boy, or the driving ‚Be Somebody‘ in which Tom Hugo sings about the consuming desire for self-realisation which slumbers in all of us. This song is as personal as it gets, as it portrays

the true reason for Tom’s artistic aspirations and endeavours in addition to manifesting an unassailable general validity which appeals to and speaks for each and every one of

us. This song is an infectious tune whose joyous harmonies go straight for the heart, filling it with a levity which helps us get through the gloomiest day.

Little wonder that one of Tom’s favourite German words is ‚Ohrwurm‘ (literally ‚earwig‘!) which means ‚hook line‘. „German’s got a whole lot of really cool words, but I like ‚Ohrwurm‘ best of all“,

enthuses Tom. „It just happens that Norwegian hasn’t got a word like that at all.“

Anyone who is lucky enough to hear Tom’s debut album ‚Sundry Tales‘ will quickly discover that Tom has taken this vivid term to heart so well that it sounds as if he’d invented it! Even though this word does not exist in Tom’s native land doesn’t mean that he hasn’t mastered the meaning behind it and put it to brilliant work.

What was it we were saying right at the beginning of this piece; there is always a way.Right. And for Tom, the only way is straight up!
