Ahmedabad: They have always beenblessed with a huge appetite for risk,an en-trepreneurial skill that has alreadyearned Ahmedabad the tag of city of en-trepreneurs.

And now raring to traipse down the samepath of entrepreneurship are young andadventurous Amdavadis, who wouldntthink twice before chucking a cushycorporate job to float a business venture of their own.

Whats more, the driving force for Am-davadi youngsters in picking up a job is togain experience that would help start theirown business in the future.

Thats what a recent study of youngstersbelow 25, carried out by global research firmSynovate on behalf of Bangalore-basedHR firm TeamLease Staffing Solutions, has found.

Titled Why youth pick and chuck jobs, the study surveyed responses of 443 young-sters and 52 human resource professionalsin Ahmedabad, Banga lore, Chennai ,D el hi , H yd er ab ad , K ol ka ta , M um ba iand Pune to understand the basis of jobselection/rejection by youth and thefactors that attract, motivate, support re-tention, and contribute to attrition amongstyoungsters.

A whopping 78 per cent Amdavadi young-sters said starting their own business wasone of the main reasons for quitting their

jobs as against an average 50 per cent young-sters in other cities.

Amdavadi youth (71 per cent ) came nextonly to Puneites (75 per cent ) and scoredhigher than the national average of 40 percent when it came to picking up a job basedon the kind of experience it would help themgarner in starting out on their own inthe future.

Not hung up on working with corporatebiggies in swanky work environs or even tookeen on materialistic pursuits, thestudy found that Amdavadi youth are moreadventurous thanyouth elsewhere inbigtown India.

What Amdavadislove is the challengethe job offers, which explains why a major-ity of Amdavadis said they wouldnt mindworking in a small, emerging organisation.

Only 20 per cent Amdavadis saidworking conditions were importantdeciding factors as opposed to a whopping67 per cent in Bangalore and 64 per centin Hyderabad.

And if for 60 per cent of youngsters inDelhi and Hyderabad materialistic needslike hi-end gadgets are main motivators intaking up a job, only 27 per cent Amdavadisagreed to this.

Amdavadi youth stood out in all the

parameters. They emerged as the highestrisk takers with the greatest entrep-reneurial bent of mind and a sharp businessacumen.

The job profile and financial independ-ence matters more to them than theperks of a job or a companys workculture, says Surabhi Mathur, general man-ager (permanent staffing), TeamLease

Staffing Solutions.Things like workculture, peer pressure, incentives, sizeand brand image of the

company,wh ich are major deciding factorsfor youngsters in many cities, dont reallyrank high in the Amdavadi priority list, says Mathur, adding youngsters incities like Ahmedabad and Pune prefer totake up jobs where there is more scope toprove their mettle.

According to Surabhi Mathur, thestudy found that unlike youngsters in citieslike Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune, Am-davadi youngsters are still stronglybonded to their roots as they chart new ca-reers and that their emotional quotient ismuch higher.

Bangalore: There are tough times ahead for techies inIndia. Pretty soon, they may have to carry tissue paper totheir offices, for the US recession seemsto have entered even the toilets of Indiansoftware firms.

After slashing salary increments andtravel budgets, many domestic firms andMNCs are now cutting back on daily of-fice stuff like stationery, canteen snacksand even tissue paper. Many loos that wereonce well-stocked with rolls of toilet pa-per,sanitary disposal bags and bottles of handwash are running short of them now.

Tissue paper rolls have disappearedfrom most gentstoilets. But women col-leagues say their toilets still have them, although the quality has dropped, saida technology professional working foran MNC.

Another professional, Meera Sridhar, said, Tissuepaper is found only in a couple of toilets out of the ninewe have. The face tissues vanished altogether afortnight ago.

Housekeeping and administration staff have been giv-en instructions to be cost-conscious. Earlier,I would senda security guard to fetch a pen or a writing pad from admin.A few days ago, the security man said I must personally go

and get them.I went, only to be told thatthe company has put a stop to stationeryin order to cut costs, said Akhil D,a sen-ior professional in an IT MNC.

The recession has affected compa-ny canteens too. We used to get freesnacks, biscuits, popcorn with coffee, tea and badam milk. That has beenstopped now, although theres no offi-cial word on it yet, said Rajani Pravin,a young BPO executive. The cuts are

being implemented very subtly. Every-body wants to avoid panic and bad pub-licity, pointed out Lata Mahoharan, manager (admin), with a leading do-mestic tech firm.

We have heard that an American airline has cut a cel-ery leaf from every burger it serves on board. Are com-panies being penny wise and pound foolish,or will theyactually bring about some savings? queried a senior man-ager of a BPO firm.

Ahmedabad: In a move that wouldmake Jamnagar a global petroleum re-fining hub, Reliance IndustriesLtd (RIL) is all set to commission itsnew petroleum refinery ahead of sched-ule. The refinery, which is coming upat RILs SEZ adjacent to the existing re-finery, was initially scheduled for com-missioning in December 2008 but is nowslated to go onstream some months ear-lier. Work on the new refinery startedin March 2006.

Announcing this here on Thursdayat the 34th annual general meeting of the company, RIL chairman MukeshAmbani said the new refinery wouldadd 5,80,000 barrels per day to global

capacity, taking RILs total petroleumrefining capacity at Jamnagar from theexisting 0.66 million barrels per day(mbpd) to 1.24 mbpd.

Terming it as a momentous achieve-ment, Ambani said RILs petroleum re-fining business would create historywith nearly two per cent of the globalpetroleum refining capacity being con-centrated in one location Jamnagar.

The commissioning of the new re-

finery will strongly position Jamnagaras the refining hub of the world andstrengthen Indias position as a majorglobal supplier of high quality refinedpetroleum products, said Ambani.

Of late, there have been many an-nouncements about setting up new re-fineries in various parts of the worldbut they are yet to see fruition. Ours isthe first large refinery added in recenttimes to meet global shortages, headded. Incidentally, the new refinery isthe first unit to come up at themulti-product Jamnagar SEZ thatscoming up on nearly 11,000 acres of land.

According to Ambani, several oth-er organisations were considering in-vestment in a wide range of industries, from chemicals to alternative energy,in the SEZ.

Helsinki: The creator of a new gen-eration of Star Trek-style smart pillswhich allow life-saving drugs to be re-leased into the body on demand, andsmart injections, which pass throughthe skin without needles, has been giv-en the worlds richest technologyprize for leading a biomedicalrevolution that is helping millionsaround the globe.

Dr Robert Langer, the Harvard pro-fessor who heads the worlds largestbiomedical engineering laboratory inthe world at MIT,was awarded the Mil-lennium Technology Prize here lateon Wedne sday.

The diminutive and downbeat doc-tor of chemical engineering, has of-ten been described as a pharmaceu-tical postman for managing to de-

liver life-saving drugs to the right partof the body, in the right dose and atthe right time. What that really means,he explained to TOI, within minutesof winning the 800,000-euro prize, is

that depending on how smart a pillis, you can target a disease in a con-trolled way.

Langer, some times seen as the pro-fessor of the impossible, said he wasnow busy using ultrasound to openthe nano pores of the skin, so that

drugs can pass in non-invasively. Itslike Star Trek but if you had thechoice between being injected or notinjected, you know which one youwould choose.

The Techonology Prize falls justabout $40,000 short of the 10 millionSwedish krona received by Nobel lau-reates and is seen to be the biggestaward for innovation, having honouredthe worldwide webs creator Tim Bern-ers-Lee at its inception in 2004. Langersaid he had always been excited byscience from the age of nine and al-ways wanted to help people.

He said the Millennium Technol-ogy Prize, established as a private-public partnership between Finnishindustry and the state and given everytwo years to recognise life-enhancinginnovations, is recognition that sci-ence can do good things.

Langer, who holds more than 600patents which have been licensed andsub-licensed to more than 200 phar-maceutical, chemical and biotechcompanies, said he wasnt sure if

smart pills and smart injectionswere currently available in India andother parts of the developing world.

But when we called after eight hours, theactor was still in the dubbin g studio! Apparently,Vids dubbed for an ad commercial in nine differentlanguages: Hindi, Marathi,Gujarati, Punjabi,Ben-gali, Tamil,Malayalam,Kannada and Telugu.Wehear she attempted Oriya, too, but didnt manage. The girl spent ten hours at the dubbing studio andwas at an all-time high. She prefers dubbing herself, and in fact hates it when someone else has to dub forher, we are told, She is amazing at picking up lan-guages and accents and managed to dub for us in asmany as nine Indian languages, now thats some-thing! Well, after all her name is Vidya, na!
