« Nobody’s filling my shoes, I’m taking them with me ».

chers amis. Comme nous sommes en famille, je viendrai

vous visiter. Vous m’avez rendu tellement heureux; vous me

manquerez. Et pas qu’un peu. MERCI !

LETTER TO MY WONDERFUL TfT FAMILYDEAR EVERYONE: subscribers, donors, spectators, creators, actors,

and volunteers…

In short, dear family!

As I write these words, it’s as if I’m in an antechamber. Often in life,

we face revolving doors that force us to change direction. Recently, I felt

that it was time for me to take another one and pass the torch to the next

generation. It’s important for me to tell you how proud I am of the TfT I leave

behind. During the past 19 years as Artistic Director of this marvellous company,

I gave my best. Some projects… I managed better than others – but everything

I did; I did with love and passion. What can I say? I love telling stories.

And having been able to write TfT’s story for 19 years with great people fills me

with pride.

I would like to warmly thank all those who are, in some way, part of

the great TfT family. Thank you for your support. Special thanks go to my

co-conspirator from the first hour, Ghislain Caron. Together we moved a few

mountains. Thanks to all the collaborators and the team in the office with

whom we’ve shared so many extraordinary things.

Thank you to everyone for trusting me all these years. Believe me;

you can have complete confidence in my successor, Joël Beddows.

I’m so thrilled that he was chosen for this position. Joël and I have had

the pleasure to work together on a long-term project that gave birth to 5 shows

in 5 years. He’s directed me several times. And over the years, a firm friendship

took root. But above all, he’s my friend and I thank you for the welcome

you will give him; you won’t regret it.

One day, after my departure had been announced, a subscriber paid me a

visit at the theatre with an article titled “Nobody’s Filling My Shoes, I’m Taking

Them with Me.” I assure you that Joël doesn’t need my shoes; he’s got good

ones of his own…you’ll see. If you don’t enjoy next season, point your fingers at

me because I was the one who planned it…and if you do enjoy it, make sure to

thank Joël, he’s the one who’ll have delivered it.

All the best, dear Joël. All the best to you all, dear friends. Since we’re family,

I’ll come visit you. You’ve made me so happy, I’ll miss you. And not just a bit.

THANK YOU! The time has come to turn the page…on the next one you’ll meet

a great guy!

THE TRUTH IS that I am a bit naive. I am also very gullible.

The truth is that I am easily distracted. I love wine, politics, and winter.

I love a good novel and contemporary art.

The truth is that I have strong convictions. I believe in the future. I believe

in healthy debate and in the honest exchange of ideas. I support the need for

diversity in opinions. Whenever I see wonder and amazement shine in the eyes

of a spectator, I am reminded that storytelling can change the world.

You should probably know that sometimes I prefer to not fully understand

something, to revel in incomprehension, because questions can be richer than

answers. Is it surprising that I am a theatre addict? My cravings are insatiable:

I am in awe of the mystery at the heart of our work. How can we define its

changeability, its ephemerality, its ability to connect us and complement us?

Theatre encourages delightful discovery and reminds us that transformation

is possible, no matter our age, our origins, our obstacles; it is the oxygen, the

elixir, the hope that gives us the strength to keep going, despite it all.

I remind myself constantly that the theatre does not belong to me:

it belongs to the audience member who experiences the work of art and

then, after he or she has left the hall, remembers a single stage moment the

next morning, or the  next week, or the next month – and that single moment

troubles him, delights her, makes him laugh, affects her forever …

As of today, I am the happy adopted son of a family who I have been eager

to share my stories with, and whose stories I am eager to listen to. You have

already made me feel so welcomed.

I already know that this family is as curious as I am, as wide-eyed and

gullible, as deliciously open to wonder as I am.

The truth is I look forward to our future together.

The truth is that I really want to say hello and talk with each and everyone

one of you about this mysterious, crazy, indescribable art form we share

and adore.

The truth is I am so delighted to be here with you!

THE RETURN OF AN ICONUNQUESTIONABLY Canada’s greatest First Nations’

playwright and one of the most influential artists of

his generation, Tomson Highway returns to Toronto

with his latest work, a one-woman musical starring

the magnificent Patricia Cano, accompanied by

Tomson himself on piano. The (Post) Mistress, known

in French as Zesty Gopher s’est fait écraser par

un frigo, tells the story of Marie-Louise Painchaud,

postmistress of a town on the French River, who has

the uncanny ability to read the village mail without

opening a single envelope, and turn each letter into

a magnificent song. Because she knows everyone’s

past and present, she takes us on a journey through

their secrets, fantasies and lies, with songs in English,

French and Cree. (Juno nomination for Best Aboriginal

Album, 2015). A co-production with Pleiades Theatre.

LORSQU’IL Y A UN TRÉSOR AU BOUT DU JOUR, LES HOMMES RÉVÈLENT LEUR VÉRITABLE NATURE.LÉONIE A PERDU SA MÈRE. Son père l’élève

seul.

mystérieux « John Long Silver ».

classique.

WHEN A TREASURE IS WITHIN GRASP, OUR TRUE NATURE IS REVEALED.SINCE THE DEATH of Leonie’s mother, bedtime stories

have lost their appeal. But through the experience of

grief she also gains the desire for independence; one

day, Leonie decides to read literature’s most famous

pirate novel without her father’s help: Treasure Island

by Robert Louis Stevenson. This is just the opportunity

that the mysterious “John Long Silver” has been

waiting for all his life. Suddenly caught between

reality and fantasy, Leonie finds herself on a quest for

a great treasure, lost somewhere in the middle of the

Atlantic at the turn of the 18th century. A wonderful tale

of integrity, friendship, alliances and betrayals that

reimagines Stevenson’s classic in surprising ways!

“ALL THE PLEASURE OF LOVE SUBSISTS IN CHANGE”, DOM JUANREBELLIOUS LIBERTINE. Incorrigible skirt-chaser.

Dom Juan does not want to be a son. He does not

want to be a husband. Nor does he want to be a

master. Or worse —a hypocrite. Dom Juan simply

seeks the freedom to love women without restraint

and, most importantly, without limitation. He only

wants the freedom to seduce them without ever

having to deal with the consequences! But can one

really live a life of limitless conquests, running away

from accountability each time, and never pay the

heavy price of judgment? Director Joël Beddows

plunges us into a universe situated at the crossroads

of comedy, philosophical meanderings and the quest

of a mythic figure more human than we would like

to think.
