Président de la FITA

Dear Archery Friends,

e are now well on our way into 2009 with a great many of our major events already having taken place. We began with a very successful

Indoor World Championships thanks to our friends in Poland who arranged a really great event. The performances of our archers in Poland were at the highest levels.

We have ahead of us our Youth World Championships, the Para World Championships, the Outdoor World Championships, and the 3D World Championships. The organisers of these events are working very hard to prepare the venues for great competitions and so has our FITA Office Staff in assisting the organisers so that these events will be the best possible.

We have so far had the competitions in the first three stages of the FITA World Cup Series. We began with a really great start in Santo Domingo in early April with the first stage and then moved to Porec in May for the second stage. For the third stage we were in Antalya in early June. And now we have fourth stage in early August in Shanghai. This entire series of events will culminate in the World Cup Final in Copenhagen at the end of September. And since the IOC Session is taking place just after our Final, we will be able to host many IOC Members and they will be able to see first hand the high performance levels of our athletes and also very high levels of competitive excitement and precision.

I have mentioned in brief detail our World Cup Series because this is a new and exciting addition to our competition calendar. We have been holding these events for the past couple of years and they have proven to be an exciting and integral part of our competition schedule. And our athletes themselves very much look forward to the experience of shooting in a World Cup Event. In addition, this series of events has brought to FITA and our athletes greater media exposure than we had enjoyed before the World Cup Series. This is very good publicity for FITA and it is an essential part of our plans for the growth of archery around the world.

Immediately preceding our Outdoor World Championships in Ulsan, Korea, will be this year’s FITA Congress. As always this is a very impor-tant meeting of the FITA Member Associations. We have very important business to attend to, including bylaw actions, elections, motions, and the usual FITA business that is carried on at Congress. I am eagerly looking forward to meeting with all of you in Ulsan.

2009 has begun as a very good year for archery. I believe it will be one of our most successful years. With your help and ideas we are well on our way to achieving the goal of our Strategic Plan. These are exciting and challenging times. I thank all of your for your great efforts toward the success of the growth and development of FITA.

I wish all of you the best for 2009.

4 The Target La Cible

n the occasion of the Archery World Cup stage in Antalya, Turkey, in the first week of June 2009,

the International Archery Federation (FITA) officially launched its new brand and logo – World Archery.

World Archery is a forward-focused brand repre-senting the sport of archery to both sports enthusiasts and the worldwide market beyond the archery family. The federation wants the sport of archery to be in the forefront—a global consumer brand, that promotes archery at every level with enthusiasm and passion.

Represented by the new, dynamic logo, the World Archery brand unifies all of the activities, events, and members of the federation under one brand name to be centrally promoted by FITA and its Continental Associations. The FITA entity and logo remain valid as the producer of this brand. The World Archery logo will be used at upcoming events such as the Youth, Para-Archery and World Archery Championships.

The vibrant colours, a fundamental characteristic of the World Archery logo, reflect its bright and modern attitude while building all-important recognition. Following best business practices from the corporate world, FITA understands that the immense value of strong branding cannot be over emphasized, especially today. The new brand—World Archery—was developed with the strategic cooperation of TSE Consulting; former Saatchi and Saatchi de-signer Nick DARKE designed the logo.

FITA President, Prof Dr Ugur ERDENER, said: “FITA is among the first of the international sport federations to create a consumer brand for its sport. We believe it is very important that all archery activities be unified with one brand name. The purpose is simply to make archery stronger worldwide.”

The World Archery brand, established primarily to promote the sport of archery to a broad target market around the world, is the result of the Archery World Plan that developed a clear definition of the values and image of international archery. Built on values such as heritage and harmony, the essential modern image of the sport encompasses mind, body and technology. There are two key words that best express the core of the World Archery brand: precision and intensity.

The development of the new brand dem-onstrates FITA’s drive and ambition for devel-opment. The World Archery brand is one of the first of many exciting developments that will come from the archery community in the next few years. The federation has taken the lead in focusing on the archery brand to en-sure the sport remains competitive in today’s market.

marque.

he first World Cup stage of the year took place from 31 March to 5 April 2009 in Santo Do-

mingo, Dominican Republic. This year, a mixed team event was successfully introduced in the World Cup season in order to develop and promote the new competition. A mixed team consists of one male and one female archer from the same country and same bow division. After the four World Cup stages of the year, the best two teams—first country in recurve and compound Mixed Team Ranking—will qualify for the World Cup Final. In addition to the individual competition held in Copenhagen (DEN) in Septem-ber, the gold match of the Mixed Team competition will be organised. The qualifying countries will com-pete against teams from Denmark.

The individual and team finals of the first stage of the year were held at Santo Domingo’s Plaza de Espana in the city downtown. The Italian Na-talia VALEEVA was crowned the “Queen of Santo

Domingo,” winning her second title in a row in the Dominican Republic in the recurve women’s category. The young, talented Romain GIROUILLE (FRA) and Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA) won the gold in recurve and compound men. The compound women’s podium was 100 percent American with Brittany LORENTI, Jamie VAN NATTA and Diane WATSON.

Recurve MenFor the recurve men’s title, the 20-year old Frenchman Romain GIROUILLE—who won last year’s World Cup Stage 2 in Croatia and was bronze medallist at the 2008 Grand Final in Lausanne—faced the Canadian Crispin DUENAS, aged 23, who finished 39th at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

In the match for gold, GIROUILLE proved more consistent, shooting all twelve arrows in the yellow ring, scoring only 10s and 9s. He led by two points after the first (28-26) and the second (57-55) ends. His advantage increased to six points after his opponent DUENAS scored a 6 at his eighth arrow (85-79). The final end would not change the story of this match and GIROUILLE clinched the gold 112-107.

Simon TERRY (GBR)—individual and team silver medallist at the 1992 Olympic Games—clinched the bronze medal after beat-ing the 2004 Olympic champion Marco GALIAZZO (ITA) 113-108.

Recurve Women Natalia VALEEVA (ITA), five-time Olympian and winner of several indoor and outdoor world championships titles in her career, was the winner of the 2008 World Cup stage in Santo Domingo. The Italian shot against another many-time Olympian, Alison WILLIAM-

SON (GBR), for the recurve women’s gold medal. The British wom-an had defeated the No. 1 seed and 2008 World Cup Final winner Justyna MOSPINEK (POL) in the quarterfinal to reach the gold final.

VALEEVA and WILLIAMSON were tied at 26 points each af-ter three arrows. The Italian took a 1-point lead at the halfway mark (52-51), and thanks to a perfect 10-10-10 third end, she increased her advantage to six points (82-76) with only three ar-rows to go. Despite scoring a 6 on her last shot, the Italian had a margin that was comfortable enough to overcome her opponent. With a score of 106-101, VALEEVA became the Queen of Santo Domingo clinching her second victory in a row in the Dominican Republic with wins in 2008 and 2009.

“This was the perfect holiday! Three gold medals (individual, team, and mixed team), one European record and a lot of fun,” VALEEVA said.

Dola BANERJEE (IND), who won the 2007 World Cup Final in Dubai, defeated her teammate Reena KUMARI in a tiebreaker (102-102/9-7) to leave Santo Domingo with the bronze medal.

Compound MenThe American Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA) and the Swiss Patrizio HOFER (SUI) are experienced archers and are always very closely matched. Before meeting for the gold in Santo Domingo, they had already faced each other twice with two victories for the American two years ago at the world championships in Germany and at the World Cup in Turkey.

Despite having the best start and a 2-point lead at the halfway mark (57-55), HOFER’s opponent gained on him in the third end. After the Swiss archer shot an 8 with his ninth arrow, the score was tied at 84 points each with only three arrows to go. In the last end, GELLENTHIEN shot two 10s and a 9 to clinch a third victory in his head-to-head confrontation with HOFER (113-112).

For bronze, it was the first confrontation between Peter ELZ-INGA (NED) and Rigoberto HERNANDEZ (ESA). The Dutch archer won this match 117-115.

Compound Women Jamie VAN NATTA (USA) is the reigning World Cup winner after her victory in the Grand Final in Lausanne last September. She is the No. 1 in the world and was the No. 1 seed in Santo Domingo this year. She entered the gold medal match as the favourite against her teammate Brittany LORENTI, for whom this first stage of the year was her first World Cup participation.

The 22-year old LORENTI had a perfect start in the match, lead-ing 30-28 after three arrows and putting pressure on her experi-enced opponent, she managed to keep her 2-point lead after the second (57-55) and third (83-81) ends. VAN NATTA scored 8-7-10 in the last end, while LORENTI shot two 10s and a 9 to clinch her first gold World Cup medal with the score of 112-106.

“My whole body is shaking! It is amazing—this is one of the biggest tournaments I have been to and I put a lot of work in the preparation to come here and finally it paid off,” LORENTI said after her victory.

tarting the first week of May 2009 in Porec, Cro-atia, archers aimed at qualifying for the finals that would be held in the spectacular, picturesque set-ting of the Porec Marina, downtown Porec. This

venue proved challenging for the archers. Thursday, 7 May was Italian Marco GALIAZZO’s birthday and he celebrated in style with a win in the mixed team event and a qualification for the recurve gold final. Jayanta TALUKDAR (IND) starred again on the po-dium, while ZHANG Juan Juan (CHN), Sergio PAGNI (ITA) and Nicky HUNT (GBR) wore gold as well.

Recurve MenJayanta TALUKDAR (IND) won the first ever World Cup stage in Porec in 2006 and also participated in the 2006 World Cup Final in Mexico. This year in Porec, he faced the 2004 Olympic champion Marco GALIAZZO (ITA) for the recurve men’s gold medal. These two archers had previously met twice—in 2006 and 2008. Both matches were played in Porec and were won by TALUKDAR.

TALUKDAR opened the 2009 gold final with a 3-point lead over GALIAZZO at 27-24, and kept his lead in the second end 55-52. The Indian seemed ready to record another victory against the Italian as he held the lead, although his advan-tage slipped to 82-81. TALUKDAR confirmed his 3-0 head-to-head statistics against GALIAZZO by winning the match and the gold medal with a final score of 110-108.

“I guess Porec is a lucky charm for me. Win-ning for the second time a World Cup stage here is a great feeling. The organisation, the people, the place, all is good here. This time it was tougher to win with the finals field by the sea. We needed to adapt, especially to the water around us. That’s OK,

that’s part of the show,” TALUKDAR said after his second win in three editions.

The American Brady ELLISON was the No. 1 seed of the com-petition and faced the Frenchman Jean-Charles VALLADONT in the bronze medal match, which was the first confrontation between the two archers. In a tight contest, VALLADONT finally clinched victory after a double shoot-off (114-114/8-8/10-9).

Recurve WomenZHAO Ling (CHN) and Pia Carmen LIONETTI (ITA) had never faced each other before they met in the recurve women’s gold final in Porec. The first end gave the advantage to the Chinese archer as she scored 28 points, against 27 for the Italian. However, a great second end by LIONETTI gave her the lead with 57-55.

In the second half of the match, China’s ZHAO managed to take the lead again with a superb perfect end, also taking advantage of an 8 by her opponent (85-84). In the last end, ZHAO even man-aged to increase the gap a little more to clinch the gold medal. LIONETTI went home with silver—the final score 113-110.

“Actually, I really enjoyed the place. The view is so beautiful from the shooting line. Of course, some arrows were challenging but I kept my composure and I tried my best on every shot. Results simply come from the way you shoot, not the other way around,” said ZHAO who won both individual and team gold medals in Porec.

Berengere SCHUH (FRA) was bronze medallist at the 2009 World Archery Indoor Championships in Poland earlier this year. However, the Frenchwoman conceded defeat in the bronze medal match in Porec, 105-107 against Susanne POSSNER (GER).

Score final: 113-110.

Compound Men Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA) and Sergio PAGNI (ITA) had only met once before their confrontation in Porec this year. It was at the 2007 Ulsan World Cup stage where the Salvadorian beat the Italian in the quarterfinal.

In the 2009 World Cup stage gold final, PAGNI had a perfect start with 30 points—his opponent from El Salvador managed 29 points. The Italian shot a good second end, scoring 29 points and increasing the gap 59-57.

In the second half of the match, the Salvadorian hero got his act together and scored a perfect end to narrow the Italian’s lead 88-87. However, PAGNI could not resist getting revenge after 2007, and with his second win in a row in Porec, he clinched the match by one point 117-116.

PAGNI said, “This time it was really a close match. I knew that with only a 1-point advantage over an archer like Jorge JIMENEZ I could not relax. Like last year, the wind came down this after-noon and I stayed very much focused until the end to preserve this 1-point advantage. I hope the people enjoyed the show and the view from here! With this second win in individual and other great results in team I can say that Porec is a happy place for me. I hope FITA continues to organise a World Cup stage here in the coming years.”

The bronze medal match was the first final for Vladas SIGAUS-KAS (LTU) in a FITA World Cup stage and World Ranking event. His opponent, Paul TITSCHER (GER) was silver medallist at the 2004 World Archery Youth Championships in Lilleshall (GBR). After a tight game, the young German beat the Lithuanian in a tie-breaker (111-111/10-8).

Compound WomenIn the compound women’s gold medal match, Nicky HUNT (GBR) faced the 2008 World Cup Final silver medallist Ivana BUDEN (CRO). BUDEN was shooting great—in the qualifications, she broke the 1400 barrier for the first time in her career.

The local archer BUDEN was warmly welcomed by the specta-tors. She opened the match with 8-9-10, but nothing was lost as her opponent shot 9-8-10 to tie the match at 27 points. In the second end, her opponent from Great Britain took a 1-point advan-tage with 10-10-9 for 56-55, and followed with a perfect end of 30 points to increase her lead to 86-84.

The last end was decisive—BUDEN shot a 10-9 while HUNT shot an 8-9 to tie the score. The last arrow for BUDEN was an 8, and HUNT clinched the gold medal with a 10.

“Of course I am disappointed now because I wanted to win in front of my home crowd. However, it has been a great week. The 1400 scores, the final, all were great. Archery people came from all over Croatia to organise this event. They are great and I thank them very much,” said BUDEN after her defeat.

The German Andrea WEIHE won the bronze medal against the 2007 youth indoor world champion Anastasia ANASTASIO (ITA) with a final score of 112-110.

Team EventsIn the team finals in the Porec Marina, archers had to adapt to a beautiful field, almost on the sea! The four favourite nations—Rus-sia, Sweden, China and India—prevailed!

In the recurve men’s category, India won gold over Russia by 220-218, while the bronze went to Italy against China (221-219).

“There was more water around the targets than last year and that made it difficult. The wind was changing but that was OK. The best news is actually that we beat Italy for the first time, in the semifinal. The only team we haven’t beaten is Korea. Let’s hope we make it at the world championships,” Rahul BANERJEE (IND) said after winning the recurve men’s team gold medal.

The recurve women’s team gold went to the Chinese who eas-ily beat the French ladies 214-200. Ukraine clinched the bronze medal, 212-197 versus India.

“This is the first medal for the Ukrainian women since the World Cup started! It’s such a great feeling to win as a team! The training structure has not changed since Viktor (RUBAN) became Olympic champion. However, it feels great when you are standing beside him at practice on the shooting line. It’s cool to think you have an Olympic champion in the team. All the kids in the club come to him and want to achieve the same feat,” said Yulia LOBZHENIDZE (UKR) after clinching the recurve women’s team bronze medal.

After beating the Swedes in the 2008 compound men’s gold final in Porec, the Italians conceded a 223-219 defeat this year against the same opponents. Denmark won the bronze medal in this category, beating Germany 225-220.

In compound women, Russia beat Germany for gold at the 2008 Santo Domingo World Cup stage, so this was a revenge match. However, it became a 2-0 head-to-head statistic after the Russians won again this time—216-214. The Dutch team won the bronze medal with a score of 223-220 against Italy.

In the new mixed team competition, after winning in Santo Do-mingo, Natalia VALEEVA (ITA) again paired with Marco GALIAZZO in Porec with the same success. The Italian team defeated the Poles Justyna MOSPINEK and Rafal DOBROWOLSKI, 149-145 in the recurve gold final. Another Italian pair made up of Anastasia ANASTASIO and Sergio PAGNI also won in the compound division, with a 156-154 victory over the Americans Jamie VAN NATTA and Braden GELLENTHIEN.

World Cup RankingAfter Porec, Marco GALIAZZO (ITA) took a big step towards quali-fication for the recurve men’s World Cup Final to be held in Sep-tember in Copenhagen, Denmark. With 36 points, he owned a 9-point lead over his first pursuer Jayanta TALUKAR (IND). Romain GIROUILLE (FRA) was provisionally 3rd with 25 points and Crispin DUENAS (CAN) 4th with 21 points.

In the other categories, everything remained wide open. Natalia VALEEVA (ITA) led the recurve women’s ranking with 26 points, in

front of ZHAO Ling (CHN) with 25, and Berengere SCHUH (FRA) with 22; Pia Carmen LIONETTI (ITA) and Alison WILLIAMSON were tied with 21 points.

In compound men, the situation was even tighter, since Sergio PAGNI (ITA) and Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA) were provisionally 1st with 25 points each, while Dietmar TRILLUS (CAN) followed with 23. Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA) and Patrizio HOFER (SUI) were 4th place co-holders with 21 points each.

Ivana BUDEN (CRO) and Jamie VAN NATTA (USA) were close to qualification for the Copenhagen Final with 34 and 31 points, respectively. However, they were closely followed by Olga BOSCH (VEN) with 28 points, and Nicky HUNT (GBR) and Brittany LORENTI (USA), both with 25 points.

front of ZHAO Ling (CHN) with 25, and Berengere SCHUH (FRA) with 22; Pia Carmen LIONETTI (ITA) and Alison WILLIAMSON were tied with 21 points.

However, they were closely followed by Olga BOSCH (VEN) with 28 points, and Nicky HUNT (GBR) and Brittany LORENTI (USA), both with 25 points.

tage 3 of the Archery World Cup took place in beautiful, sunny Antalya during the first week

of June. Finals were shot on Saturday and Sun-day afternoon on Baki’s beach, which was full of archery supporters. Simon TERRY (GBR), KWAK Ye-Ji (KOR), Dominique GENET (FRA) and Luzmary GUEDEZ (VEN) emerged as the big winners in in-dividuals!

Recurve MenThomas AUBERT (FRA) and Simon TERRY (GBR) each reached a gold medal match at a World Cup for the first time in their careers. However, the Briton TERRY, was 4th at the last Archery World Championships in Leipzig, a double medallist at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games, and was seeded No. 7 in this event. This was a clash between expe-rience and youth!

The wind was not as strong as Saturday’s team finals but some strong gusts still blew. It was a hot and sunny day at the beach. TERRY had a brilliant start with 10-10-10, while the young AUBERT strug-gled with 7-9-X10. In the second end, TERRY had another 10 but then, surprised by the wind, shot a 6! He finished the end with a 9. AUBERT had another 7, then two 9s and trailed 51-55. In the third end, AU-BERT improved a bit with 8-10-10 to cut his deficit to two points at 79-81, TERRY had 7-9-10.

AUBERT tried his best with 8-10-9 but Simon “The Silver Fox” TERRY secured victory with X10-X10-9. He is having a superb season so far and this 110-106 win may take him to the World Cup Final in Copenhagen (DEN) on the 26 September!

“I am very pleased with this gold medal, obviously. I have been shooting well all week long. I am get-

ting more used to head-to-head matches! I kept the same settings from the training field so I didn’t really suffer from the wind. I mean shooting 110 points with a six is a pretty good thing. I really en-joyed this finals field, although, I was affected a bit by the noise. Am I old now (laughing)?” said TERRY.

In the bronze medal match, the young Amedeo TONELLI (ITA) at first had the upper hand against the favourite Jayanta TALUKDAR (IND), 55-51. However, the Italian lost his advantage in the third end with 9-7-6 and suddenly trailed 77-79. The Indian clinched the victory 106-101, putting him position for the race for the World Cup Final! He was in Merida (MEX) in 2006 and he may well be in Copenhagen in 2009!

Recurve womenIt was a 100% Korean final! The 12-arrow match world record holder and team Olympic champion YUN Ok-Hee faced KWAK Ye-Ji, the reserve archer for the Korean team in Beijing.

Both archers struggled a bit with the wind at the beginning. KWAK scored 24 and YUN shot only one point better with 25 in the first end. YUN continued to have trouble and even scored a 6 to reach only 49 points at the half, while KWAK found her rhythm and scored a nice 10-10-9 to earn a 4-point lead, 53-49.

YUN won the Antalya World Cup stage last year—she only had one arrow out of the 10—when she broke the world record to win the match with 119 points! This time, YUN scored only one 10, while KWAK celebrated her first World Cup victory with a score of 107-101!

In the bronze medal match, OUYANG Ruyu (CHN) shot against another team Olympic champion JOO Hyun-Jung (KOR). Each ar-cher started with groups slightly on the left side of the target, but still achieved high scores with both shooting 28 points. Then, JOO built his lead to 83-80. OUYANG finished well with 10-9-10. How-ever JOO kept shooting solid shots. She scored three more 9s and managed to hold a 1-point victory, 110-109!

Compound MenWinner in Santo Domingo, Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA), shot against Dominique GENET (FRA). The American, with great form during this competition, was ranked first at the end of the qualifi-cation round. He succeeded in shooting 119-point matches twice in a row to qualify for the final. In the first end, when GENET was at full draw for his third arrow, a wind gust cost him an 8. GEL-LENTHIEN continued in good form and scored 10-9-X10 to take a 2-point lead. However, then the American lost it a bit with an 8 and a 9 before ending with a 10 in the second end. The Frenchman was close to perfect with a 9-10-10—a great group and tied the match at 56-56!

GENET continued in great fashion with an X10-X10-10, de-spite another wind gust during his last shot. After another X10, GELLENTHIEN struggled with a low 9 and high 9. He was trailing 84-86. In the last end, the American shot a 10, an outside liner which was a 9 and another 10. However, GENET did not let the opportunity go, and clinched his first victory on the World Cup after coming close many times! He scored another 10-X10-X10 and won it 116-113!

GENET said, “I was feeling very well in shooting. Now, this vic-tory has a special taste for me, it’s far different from the qualifi-cation round. I mean it’s easier to hit the yellow ring during the qualification round; today it has not been so easy! I was all excited inside; my only goal was to make things right despite the pressure.”

A teammate of GENET, Sebastien BRASSEUR won in Antalya in 2007 and shot for bronze this time against Patrick COGHLAN (AUS). BRASSEUR was one of the four archers to participate at the grand final in Dubai two years ago. His opponent took part in the Archery World Cup Final last year in Lausanne.

BRASSEUR started with a really good group, just a bit on the right side and scored three 9s. COGHLAN was more all over but still managed 9-10-9 to score 28 points and take the lead. COGH-LAN remained strong during the whole match scoring 10-10-9, X10-X10-X10 and X10-9-9 to keep a 1-point lead and clinch the bronze medal, 115-114.

Compound WomenThis was a world premiere in the history of this competition! Two archers from Venezuela went for gold in Antalya. Olga BOSCH, who ranked 3rd at the first stage in Santo Domingo this year, shot against Luzmary GUEDEZ, the winner of the Stage 4 last year in Boe, France.

Poulies HommesVainqueur à Saint Domingue, Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA) jouait pour l’or contre Dominique GENET (FRA).

BOSCH started with a group low on the target, while GUEDEZ was a bit all over the place. They both scored 25 points in the first end. Then, BOSCH led 54-53. The next end, the archers were tied again at 81-81! In the last end, GUEDEZ held on with 9-10-8 to get 108 points. BOSCH had a strange follow-through on her 10th arrow and scored a 7. She finished with two 9s but that was not enough to come back. In any event, it was gold and silver for Venezuela! GUEDEZ won 108-106!

“Wow! I feel very happy! The weather was the same as in Ven-ezuela at this time of the year, so I was used to the heat. It was a bit windy but we both had to shoot with it—it blew for me and my opponent as well. This place is awesome—I really enjoyed shoot-ing on the beach. What a great memory for me and Venezuela!” said GUEDEZ.

Camilla SOEMOD (DEN) beat the World Cup ranking leader, IVANA BUDEN (CRO), for bronze. SOEMOED started well with X10-9-10 and took a 3-point lead over BUDEN, who had only 8-9-9 for a score of 29-26. The Croatian came back with a perfect 30 that allowed her to close the gap to one point at 56-57 and then 83-84. However, SOEMOD did not let down in the last end. She had the best start and the best finish (with three 9s) and she won the bronze medal 111-109.

Team EventsThe team finals took place on Saturday on the Baki’s beach.

In recurve men, No. 1 and 2 in the world faced each other. It was a clash of the titans, and this probably will not be the last time they meet. Korea opened with 10-10-10 and had an early lead 57-56. They continued with another perfect 10-10-10 while India was not so perfect. The score was 115-112 at the half and Korea

GUEDEZ l’a emporté 108-106!

kept pushing to clinch the gold 225-220! Malaysia won the bronze. In the recurve women’s category, the young Russians gave a

good fight against the Koreans. Korea built a 2-point advantage at the half, 102-100. However, Russia stayed strong in the match and closed the gap to a 1-point lead with three arrows left, 180-179! At the end, the favourite Koreans prevailed 209-205. India clinched bronze.

In compound men, Sweden met the Netherlands. The “Or-ange” had some juice at the beginning: 9-X10-X10-X10-10-10-10-X10-10. That was eight 10s in a row! The Dutch led 116-113, and clinched gold with 229-223! Canada got the bronze medal.

Two surprise teams, Greece and New Zealand, faced each other for the compound women’s gold. New Zealand took the lead at 159-154 and earned their first World Cup victory with the score of 211-204! Australia won bronze.

Mixed TeamIn the mixed team competition, China earned themselves a presti-gious victory over Korea in the recurve division. CHENG Wenyuan and OUYANG Ruyu beat IM Dong-Hyung and YUN OK-Hee, 146-144.

In compound, Sergio PAGNI and Eugenia SALVI (ITA) had the better start with 37 points compared to 34 for Patrick COGHLAN and Fiona HYDE (AUS). However, the Australians managed to turn the situation around during the second end, 71-70. Italy got the advantage back shooting a 38 in the third end to lead 108-107, although Australia had a liner 10. Finally PAGNI and SALVI shot another 38 (10-8-10-X10) to clinch the gold, 146-142.

56-57, puis 83-84.

Our special consultant for the finals in Antalya, top archer Crispin DUENAS (CAN) said, “Mixed teams are another great idea by FITA. Men are maybe a bit more powerful but the women are often times more accurate. So, it is logical to put them together, as it showcases all the aspects of our beautiful sport. It is also good to take the top women and the top men archers from each country—it shows the top level of the country. Moreover, some countries cannot produce three men or women to put a regular team together, but the mixed team gives them a chance!”

World Cup RankingGELLENTHIEN (USA), in compound men, and the mixed compound team of Italy are qualified for the World Cup Final in Copenhagen! The rest of the field is wide open this year.

In the recurve men’s category, TALUKDAR and TERRY (GBR) definitely have an edge with 45 and 43 points respectively. Marco GALIAZZO (ITA) is still in good shape with 36 points. The fourth place is up for grabs—Romain GIROUILLE (FRA) currently has it with 25 points but many archers are still in the hunt.

In recurve women, Berengere SCHUH (FRA) currently leads with 35 points, four ahead of Natalia VALEEVA (ITA). From there down, the ranking is very tight—the Final is anybody’s for the taking.

Puis l’Italie a repris l’avantage 108-107.

Behind GELLENTHIEN, who has 46 points, there are an un-precedented 14 archers within 14 points of each other—from the 2008 World Cup winner Dietmar TRILLUS (CAN) with 29 points, to Vladas SIGAUSKAS (LTU), who has 15. They all still have a chance to qualify for Copenhagen.

The compound women’s category is not as tight but still wide open at this stage of the season. The top eight archers—from BOSCH (VEN) with 49 points to Brittany LORENTI (USA) with 25 points—are in contention for the four places.

In the mixed team categories, the top team of the season will play against Denmark in Copenhagen. In compound, Italy has 40 points, assuring its qualification. In recurve, the Italians also lead with 32 points. However, they could be caught by China, Poland or India.

In the overall nation ranking, Italy, with 448 points, leads India and the USA.

niveau.

elcome to Copenhagen and many thanks to the International Archery Federation, the Danish

Archery Federation, Sport Event Denmark and the sponsors who have made this exciting event pos-sible at the beautiful and historic area at Nyhavn.

Copenhagen moves at a fast pace when it comes to attracting large international sports events. And the goal is clear: Copenhagen is to be the leading event-capital of Northern Europe!

One of the most spectacular sports events of the year in Denmark is the Archery World Cup Final in Copenhagen on 26 September. In the old harbour district of Nyhavn, the World’s 16 best archers will compete for World Cup medals. In a beautiful setting this event is definitely not to be missed.

When Copenhagen is hosting this spectacular sport event, the Archery World Cup Final, it is not just about the fascination of sports and the excite-ment about who will come out as the winner. For

Copenhagen the Archery World Cup is part of a bigger picture.Copenhagen is a very active sports city and especially this year

the city hosts many important sports events. The Archery World Cup Final will be the last event prior to the Olympic Session & Con-gress in Copenhagen and is chosen as the official opening sports event. This will make a great stage for the sport of archery.

Copenhagen has in recent years attracted a number of inter-national top sports events, including Taekwondo World Champi-onships, UCI BMX Supercross World Cup, World Outgames, UEFA Council Meeting, FINA Open Water World Cup, all of them in 2009, as well as the UCI Road World Championship in 2011.

I wish you all a pleasant stay in Wonderful Copenhagen.

ince the beginning of the 2009, all the equip-ment for the premium archery competitions has

been moved worldwide by DHL. In total, there are 48 boxes and 2,600 kilos that have been taken care by DHL Logistics Switzerland, the Swiss arm of the world-class shipping company.

There is a wide range of material needed for an archery event: from publicity panels to a giant inflat-able arch, and from metres of cables to the sophis-ticated score boards for results and timing services. Once it leaves its Swiss base, the equipment is taken care by DHL as it is shipped from one event to another: from the historical Plaza de Espana in Santo Domingo (DOM) to the marina in Porec (CRO), from the beaches of Antalya (TUR) to the modern downtown metropolis of Shanghai (CHN), from the Mecca of archery in Ulsan (KOR) to the famous Ny-havn harbour in Copenhagen (DEN).

nce more, the World Games will be held in Asia after the success of Akita in 2001. The Kaoshiung

Organising Committee has done its best to prepare for these Games with the assistance of the technical delegate, Mr Jim LARVEN. They hired one of the best course designers, Mr Gerald FARRELL, to work out a challenging, unique field course. Some of the World Games champions will be there to defend their title. It is clear that the Chinese Taipei Archery Association will add an Asian touch, and the Lake area is very nice and will give a great backdrop for the finals as well.

What is the importance for the World Games for Field Archery? Basically, it is the most important competition for this discipline, since only the best compete. Archers have to qualify at the world cham-pionships, like the Olympic Games qualifications. The

nique Jim LARVEN.

number of places is limited and the competition is more intense since only the top four advance after the two-day qualification round.

The favourites in the recurve men’s category include Michele FRANGILLI (ITA), who was the runner-up in 2001. His main com-petitors will be: Alan WILLS (GBR), who was the runner-up in 2005 and is very motivated to add another medal to his rich collection, Victor WUNDERLE (USA) and Sebastian ROHRBERG (GER).

The recurve women’s title holder Petra ERICSSON (SWE) will be in Kaohsiung, but as the coach of her husband, Mats-Inge SMORDAL (NOR), who is competing in compound men. By the

Rod MENZER (USA), Compound Men Individual reigning field world champion

Page 50: The Target: Summer 2009

way, ERICSSON won the World Games both as a compound and as a recurve archer, which is quite unique. Therefore, the recurve women’s competition will be between Carole FERRIOU (FRA), who was the winner in 2001, and Jessica TOMASI (ITA). Since half of the participants have won at least one title in Field Archery over the last 10 years, the competition will be quite tough.

In compound men, we should mention that Morgan LUNDIN (SWE) has always been an amazing competitor at the World Games. He has won three titles, meaning every World Games in which he participated. However, he will not be in Kaohsiung. Therefore, the race to be his successor is wide open—the favourites are Chris WHITE (GBR) and Rod MENZER (USA), both world champions.

The compound women’s competition will also be wide open. The bronze medallist from Duisburg 2005, Austrian Petra GOEBEL (FRIEDL), will have to pay close attention to the two very strong German competitors Silke HOTTECKE and Ulrike WIESE, as well as to the World Cup co-leader Ivana BUDEN (CRO).

The barebow men’s competition has, as the clear favourite, Erik JONSSON (SWE), who is a World Games double gold medallist. His main competitors will come from Italy—Sergio Massimo CASSIANI and Giuseppe SEIMANDI.

For the barebow women, Monika JENTGES (GER), the defend-ing champion, is going to face strong opposition from France’s Christine GAUTHE and two Italians—Luciana PENNACCHI and El-eonora STROBBE. Also, watch out for the current world champion Rebecca (Becky) NELSON-HARRIS (USA), who will be competing at her first World Games.

In total, there will be 95 athletes from 20 countries and 4 con-tinents competing. Several new faces will vie for the titles, and therefore, my predictions of the favourites above should be taken with caution—they may turn out to be completely false!

The World Games for 2013 might be held in Colombia, and there might also be changes to the type of competition that will be held. To be continued…

A suivre…

ne could have thought some archers would retire after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games—many of

them already had participated in an Olympic Games a second, third, fourth or more times. On the contrary, all these familiar faces are back on the battlefield of the Archery World Cup 2009. All of them want to go to London in 2012. Anja HITZLER (GER) is one of them and she is as motivated as ever!

Anja, it’s always a pleasure seeing you on the World Cup field. Has your wonderful match against the No. 1 archer PARK Sung-Hyun (KOR) during the Beijing Games motivated you to continue high-level competition?Well… people talk to me a lot about this match. She was the 2004 Olympic champion in 2004, seeded No. 1, and there were more than 1,000 Korean spectators cheering for her in the stands! There I was at the shooting line with her. But I wasn’t scared. I had no particular expectations, I had noth-ing to lose.

I was seeded No. 33 and I knew that if I won my first match I would play against PARK. The first round was against Sophie DODEMONT (FRA) and it was a tough match. We were tied after nine arrows and I won at the end 107-106. I just finished my match and I had to go right back out on the court for the second match. The good thing is I carried the good emotions of my victory. I was feeling good and I had a good start in the match to take the lead 29-28. However, she reversed the situation and led 83-82 then increased the gap a bit more with her two last arrows. Some say I made her a bit ner-vous. I rather think she had too much confidence for

that. At the end, I had mixed feelings: I was very happy with my matches but I was a bit sad that I lost.

Before the Games, I thought that I would retire after Beijing. It’s not only the match against PARK but also the way I shot in Beijing that motivates me—I was shooting well and I know I can get even better. I took some time off to think about it and I decided to come back on the field. Now, I want to go to London 2012 and win a medal. I have about three more years to prepare myself.

Let’s come back at the beginning. How did you start archery?I was 10 years old and there was cooperation between my school and the archery club in my hometown. We could try archery for one week. The coaches in the club were Viktor BACHMANN who was the German national coach until 2004, and Franz BAUM who was the German coach before Viktor. They thought that I was talented and since I was not doing any other sport, I decided to continue.

The club must be big to have two national coaches. Where was it exactly? In Welzheim! The club organised the European Grand Prix in 1992 and 2000. Obviously, such coaches train you well so I was able to join the youth national team in 1997 and I went to the 1998 World Archery Youth Championships in Sweden. Then, the 2000 Grand Prix in Welzheim was my first senior international competi-tion, and I went to the 2002 European Championships, the 2003 World Championships, and so on…

J’ai encore trois ans pour me préparer.

A Welzheim!

Page 60: The Target: Summer 2009

You actually went to the European Championships Brussels 2004, which was your last chance to qualify for the Games in Athens. What happened there? In theory there was only one place left to be won for Germany at these championships. Veronika HAIDN TSCHALOVA won the place but she could not actually go to Athens (change of nationality). So first I was the one set to go but then, thanks to some withdrawals, we got a full team of three archers for the Games in the end.

How were the Athens Games for you?It was amazing to be there! It was amazing to see some sports stars so close by. It was great to be with so many athletes from the whole world and I enjoyed watching the other sports after the ar-chery competitions were over. I was also impressed by the ancient Panathinaiko Stadium, where we shot our matches. I finished 21st in individual and we were 7th with the team.

You were young, you were talented but four years later it was not easy for you to qualify for the Games in Beijing. What happened?I have the feeling that we lacked a long-term plan to get better each year. Other teams became better and we kept the same level. Personally I also had some problems with my shoulder. After a while, I decided to work more with a personal coach and I knew Juan Carlos HOLGADO. So, we started to work a lot on the physical aspects of archery. That part is also important for all the rest, such as the mental technique. I arrived in better shape at the last qualifying tournament for the Beijing Olympic Games.

Page 61: The Target: Summer 2009

That was in Boe (FRA) last June. During my first match, I was very nervous and I had to go through a shoot-off. Fortunately I won and then I started shooting better. At the end, I was the only German left and I actually won the tournament. I qualified again for the Games!

This time you were the only German woman archer at the Games. How did you adapt? We had one man archer and the coach Martin FREDERICK as well so it was fine. The Olympic Village in Beijing was also smaller than in Athens. So it was easier to have more contacts with other ath-letes from Germany and to meet again some friends that I had made in 2004. So, overall I had a nice experience in Beijing.

Now, we are back in the World Cup season. What do you take from it?It’s first a chance to put into practice what we train for the whole year. The quality of the World Cup events, some of the great loca-tions we shoot on are also motivations.

It would be great to go to a World Cup Final one day but that depends as well on the overall strategy for the season, the plan-ning for the world championships and a bit of luck.

What do you do beside archery?I am doing a Bachelor in Economic Engineering. I live now in Berlin. I chose this city to study because it’s very interesting and 80% of the national women team actually live here. I also like to go back home and relax there.

Who are the most important persons for you in archery?I think there are many of them. I should thank my parents for their on-going support, my coaches, the sponsors, Werner Beiter and his centre. It’s always a great help to go there and be filmed with a high-speed camera. Finally, my best friend Wiebke NULLE—I have known her since 1997 and she stopped shooting last year. Then, she helped me a lot to get to the Olympic Games and now she is an assistant coach with the German team.

What can we wish you?Patience! Patience with training, with myself.

Thanks and good luck with the upcoming competitions!

Even though fi rearms replaced the bow and arrow on the fi eld on battle, shooting a bow and arrow was still practiced and it became a discipline based upon shooting an arrow the greatest distance. With the use of an Ottoman recurve composite distance bow, archers were able to shoot distances that today modern technology bows cannot reach. Some of the records have not been broken in over 400 years.

he young, talented Brady ELLISON is an archer to keep an eye on in the coming years. He started

his career in compound with considerable success. He was individual and team world champion in the junior division at the World Archery Indoor Champi-onships Aalborg 2005, in Denmark. Later that year, his compound bow broke at a youth camp. For fun, he tried a friend’s recurve bow, and the coach, Larry SKINNER, told him he had the talent to take it up more seriously. In his first tournament with a recurve bow, ELLISON shot a 1260-point FITA Round—not bad for his first try. At the beginning of 2006, after a 7-week selection camp to see if he could enter the national youth programme succeeded and his Olympic dream was on its way!

Hello Brady! Since you seriously turned to recurve at the beginning of 2006, you have been coached by the famous KiSik LEE. What is his influence?I feel lucky to have Coach LEE—he is really amaz-ing. He has taught me pretty much everything I know about recurve archery. You can trust him, and he protects his athletes. He knows so much about archery. His way of teaching is very efficient—he teaches you very small changes that actually make you shoot so much better! His archers have won many Olympic gold medals!

It seems you have developed quite quickly with him.Every one told me it would take 4-5 years to be competitive in recurve after I shot compound. It is

true that I needed time to mature both mentally and physically. My initial goal was to participate at the London 2012 Olympic Games, but I didn’t like the idea of waiting so long. So, I took everything that Coach LEE said to heart and I worked hard. In 2006, I shot 1300 points quite early. Then, I participated at the open national championships and I actually won it. At that time, I knew I would be able to compete for a spot at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. I kept shooting really well during the winter of 06-07, and in April of 2007, I took part in my first World Cup, in Ulsan, Korea. It opened my eyes to a whole new level. There were so many good archers there, the level was amazing! It motivated me even more and that year I won the Arizona World Ranking tournament. Later on, at the US nationals I set the new national record for a FITA Round at 1357.

How was the road to Beijing? We had long trials. For me it actually seemed easier because I needed to be in the top 3 to qualify for the US team. It’s the op-posite when you shoot a tournament—you only want to be 1st. We had three sessions of trials and after the first two I was in good shape. In 2008, I really focused to get to another level with my form.

You qualified for the US team and just a few weeks later you reached your first final at a World Cup stage, in Antalya. What do you remember from this final? It was my first big match at the international level against a great archer like the World Champion IM Dong-Hyun (KOR). I over thought a little bit, I second-guessed the wind a bit too much, but it

Page 66: The Target: Summer 2009

64 The Target La Cible

was a lot of fun! I really want to get back on that beach again this year! (Redaction note: the interview was done at the Antalya stage).

Then, how were the Games in Beijing? Before I went there, I was told two things. Either I would get crushed by the pressure or I would be shooting like in a dream. I guess for me neither was really true. Right, I will always remember how my heart was pounding at the beginning of the first team match. How-ever, technically I shot as well as ever. My first two arrows were good—a 9 and a 10. After these shots I knew I could handle the pressure of the Games. In individual, I won my first match with 110 points. Then, in my second match, I shot a good group of arrows but unfortunately I just could not reach the 10—I shot eleven 9s! My opponent Jay LYONS (CAN) had a great match and won with 113 points. Still I am proud of the way I shot at the Olympics.

Now what is your goal?I want to win a medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games!

And what is the plan to get it?To participate in as many international events as possible until then. To be a top archer in the USA is good, but it’s another step to be on top at the international level. Before the Games in Beijing, I had shot only four or five international tournaments. So, Coach LEE and I decided that I would get as much international experience as possible before London.

Of course, this will be a long road and training hard will not be the only thing. You have to train smarter, to get smarter in archery. On the way, I would like to win a World Cup Final or a medal at a

Maintenant, quel est ton but?

World Championships. However, there are so many great archers and everybody wants to win. I’ll take it one step at a time with my coach. What is sure is that I will do everything necessary to win a medal at the next Olympic Games. It’s a matter of getting every-thing right at the right time.

In a sense, you did have double experience at the recent Porec World Cup, shooting recurve and compound!? You actually scared some of the compound archers (both laughing)!?Shooting compound was just for fun and I don’t think they had

much to worry about. I hadn’t shot compound for a long time but this way we were able to have a complete US compound team in Porec. Some archers were nice and lent me parts of their equip-ment. I managed to get a bow together. It was fun!

More seriously, I think I am shooting recurve even better now than last year. I set the American record for a FITA round at 1364 during our world’s team trials. I made it to the bronze medal match at the Porec World Cup. It was also great to be back on a finals field at a World Cup—these fields are super, but they are unique. You have to adapt. In Porec, we came in the morning with my coach to watch the team finals. We realised that we should not watch the

flags on the targets or the windsocks as much, but the flags on the boats that were nearby the venue. That’s what it takes—you have to adapt to these fields and I would like to do it every day. These finals are really cool!

I heard you have special mental training too.I use the Mental Management System from Lanny BASSHAM. He was a silver medallist in Rifle Shooting at the 1972 Olympic Games but he was disappointed. So, he interviewed many gold medallists and he created his own system of mental control. He then won gold at the 1976 Games and many world champion-ships titles. If you follow his system all the way through, it doesn’t allow any mental breakdown. It brings me focus, it makes me aware. If something still goes wrong, it allows me to analyze it on the spot and quickly get back on the right track. This could be crucial in a match.

It seems you are an archer with your body and soul.Archery is every part of my life. I do it in competitions but I also do it for fun with my family, my friends. I would go hunting, bow-fishing; just shoot at any target for fun. I have been lucky that my parents are supporting me so much in it, too.

Thank you Brady and best of luck!

hat Monday morning, breakfast was early, at least earlier than usual. I had to leave the house

at 6 o’clock for an hour and a half drive. My destina-tion was the house of Peter ELZINGA, who lives in Almere in the Netherlands. Peter is the new world record holder for the FITA Round (1419 points) and for the 70-metre distance (358). In the outdoor dis-cipline, he also holds the world record at 50m (357) and was a member of the Dutch squad who earned the world record for a team match (238, at the San Salvador World Cup in 2006). He is a professional archer and pro shop owner, and is well known in the archery community—but do we really know him? Today, I will be spending the day with him and see what his agenda looks like on a normal weekday. I arrived at Peter’s home at 8 o’clock sharp. He was already up; and I was greeted warmly by him and his girlfriend Vanessa. We sat down as they were having breakfast, and we discussed the programme for the day.

08:30We left the house with all the archery gear and headed for the practice field, which was about 10 minutes away. I brought my own bow to get some shots in and hopefully get some tips from Peter. Dur-ing our walk back and forth to the target, we had some conversations about his training methods. Peter believes that shooting as many arrows as he does (between a 1000 and 1500 a week) is a crucial key to his success. Peter said, “Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the quantity but the quality of these shots that is important. I would rather shoot 1000 quality shots than 1500 shots just for quantity. Every shot has to be perfect and for me that is hitting the 10 but

preferably the X10. Everybody hits the yellow at 70m, but at the top level, the amount of Xs makes the difference. I also do some physical training, especially cycling. Occasionally, I do some fitness but I don’t want to be bulky and shorten my muscles, so when I do, I use light weights.”

At a certain point during practice, Peter and Vanessa asked me if I would stay for dinner and I replied that I would love to. Little did I know that there was a catch behind this: we had to shoot for who was going to cook dinner. They did not make it easy for me: Peter had to shoot a minimum end of 59 points (6 arrows), I had to shoot minimum 58 and Vanessa could have one arrow outside the 8 each round. We shot a set system, the first to reach 10 points was the winner and the last one had to cook dinner. At first, it looked like I was going to win but then Peter got into it and won. It seemed that Vanessa and I were going to battle for the place behind the stove. Later, Marc REMIE (one of Peter’s pupils and member of the Dutch junior squad) joined in. We gave him 5 match points, as he joined in late. In the end, it came to a shoot off between Marc and me, which I won with a 10 against his 9. So, Marc was our cook for the evening.

Peter explained to me that usually, at the end of his practice ses-sions, he does a form of game with Vanessa or anyone who is up for it. It is always for something, so there is still some kind of pressure involved but still a lot of fun and relaxing. Since Peter was also part of the tests regarding a new set format for FITA competitions, this was the chance to ask him about it. He said, “The tests were super! For compound, the proposal is a new set system with hit and miss and new colours on the target. I think this new system rules out a bit the ‘luck factor’ and it should be attractive for the archers and

“I had a rocky start but now business is going well. When I start-ed, I was only working by appointment so I didn’t have to spend all my time at the shop. Now, I am open every day (except Mondays) from 13:00 till 18:00, so I can have my normal practice sessions during the morning and be home in the evening for dinner. In the evening, I can also go out for practice if I feel the need. During the week, I’m usually alone in the shop, but during the weekend I get some help from my brother-in-law (who is also an archer) and Marc REMIE. My girlfriend, Vanessa, sometimes helps out as well. She is a professional golfer and also has a job as an instructor/

spectators. Especially for spectators who don’t know anything about archery, it will be easier to understand this type of competition. It definitely sets compound apart from recurve and I think the shoot-ers will love this format. It puts a lot more pressure on the archers and delivers some interesting matches. I think it’s a step in the right direction to get compound into the Olympic Games.”

14:00We finished the first training session of the day and left for his den-tist appointment for a routine check. Lucky for Peter, all seemed well and after 15 minutes we drove down to his shop. Peter has a small but fully equipped archery shop. I was wondering how he combines being a shop owner with his professional archery career and asked him how he does it.

trainer, so she can’t be here all the time,” Peter said. While we were talking, Peter asked to see my bow. After a quick inspection and some minor adjustments, he handed it back to with the mes-sage: “no more excuses!” We continued our tour and then went over to Marc’s place; he was cooking our dinner.

18:30After dinner, we went back to the practice field to shoot some more arrows. After a couple of ends, Peter and I sat down and had a little chat. I asked him what his plans and goals for the future were. “For certain, I’m not done shooting yet. My ambitions are still high and there are still some things missing from my trophy chest. I have won lots of prizes but the world title is still missing. I would very much like to win that one before I stop my active

shooting career. After my career, I will probably stay involved in archery, maybe as a coach or something in the development of the sport. I already coach about nine juniors, six of whom are on the Dutch junior squad. Some of them are putting down some very good results, and if they continue like this, I see a great future in archery for them.”

Then, I asked how he combines high level archery and a social life. “Very well actually. My girlfriend is also a professional athlete and although our life is much about sport, we can just as easily hang out in front of TV or watch a movie or talk about many dif-ferent things or go out with our friends. We both have our friends from before our relationship and for us it is important to stay in contact with them. OK, we do talk about our sport but not all the time. Usually, the other person starts talking about it by asking how it is going. I enjoy not talking about archery all the time and I’m very much aware that there is more to life than archery.”

At one point during our conversation, Peter’s father joined us and I could not resist asking him how Peter was as a little kid. “We tried all kinds of sports, soccer, BMX, judo and even badminton. No matter what we did, he always wanted to be the best. At one point, I started archery and six months later he decided to give it try. He was immediately hooked. He was nine at the time. Now, almost twenty years later, he’s one of the best in the world. His mentality is awesome; that makes it very easy to coach him. Our relationship is one of mutual respect, although we do have our normal father and son issues (laughs).

To conclude my conversation with Peter, I triggered his con-science and put him on the spot by asking him what if he had to choose between Vanessa and archery. “She is one of the most important persons in my life and she knows that. I also know she will never ask me to make that choice. She is a professional golfer and knows what it takes to stay on top of your game. She recently

Silver medal at the Mayapan 2006 World Cup Final

Page 75: The Target: Summer 2009

Merci Peter!

started archery herself and understands the dedication it takes. I was an archer before we met and she played golf. We don’t let these things interfere with our life as a couple. We both show inter-est in each other’s sport.”

“We train together most of the morning sessions and she keeps me sharp with the games we sometimes play during practice. We always try to have some element of competition when we shoot. And let me tell you, 8 out of 10 times she beats me (laughs). When I shot my world record at 1419 I sat down and looked back at the week before. I came to the conclusion that she had a big part in the 1419. The week before, we were so relaxed and had so much fun that, even though the weather was not good at all that day of the competition, I shot so well. She was there all the time making sure that I stayed relaxed and helped throughout the day.” (Redaction note: one can read ELZINGA’s interview made at the time of the world record on www.worldarchery.org).

Looking at the clock, it was already 21:00. To finish the day, we decided to shoot a couple more ends and go our way. All in all, we shot somewhere between 350 and 400 arrows for the day, which is more than I usually do in two months. My final conclusion is that Peter is a true professional but not to the extreme. He enjoys life and knows how to put things into perspective. And one thing I know for sure: I will be in a lot of pain tomorrow!

Thanks Peter!

oaches hold a fundamental place in the quality and quantity of the development of any sport,

because they are one of the first contacts novice athletes have when beginning a sport. In addition, coaches work closely with and have the most con-tact with athletes as they develop.

Many countries still depend on accomplished for-eign experts to educate their coaches. The following list highlights some considerations and limitations of the availability of experts.• Financial limitations: travelling expenses, ac-

commodation, and professional fees, etc can be prohibitive.

• Limitations of training intensity: it can be dif-ficult to get a foreign expert to make frequent vis-its to a country, or to stay for prolonged periods. The coach would need to concentrate intense training over several visits or condense the train-ing times over long and consecutive days, caus-ing a high quantity of knowledge and know-how to be integrated into a short period of time.

• Cultural considerations: these must be re-spected and honoured, particularly regarding the value of apprenticeship.

This is mainly why the FITA Coaches Committee has decided to get involved in the training of the Coach-ing Course Conductors. This goal is simplified these days since the committee has produced several educational tools that are at the disposal of these educators: manuals, video, E-presentations.

The first program of study for Coaching Course Conductors was held in Medellin, Latin America from 10 to 16 December 2008. Ten women—a very good percentage of women participants—and seventeen

men from ten countries were trained on how to conduct a Coaching Course. The sport hostel of Medellin provided high-quality services; their attention to detail and the provision of the requirements to meet our needs is worthy of praise and gratitude from all of the attendees.

The training of the Conductors was sponsored by Olympic Solidarity and the International Foundation for the Development of Archery (FIDTA); it was supported by FITA, the Federation of Colombian Archers, the Colombian Olympic Committee and the Pan-American Archery Confederation (COPARCO). Pascal COL-MAIRE, the FITA Development and Education Director, and Direc-tor of FIDTA conducted the course. The organisational aspect was very good, as was the relationship between all parties, participants, lecturer and organisers.

The first half-day was spent in the classroom with a simple opening, attended by the President of the Colombian Olympic Committee and the FEDEARCO President, who is also the CO-PARCO Vice-President. The other days were mainly conducted on the archery range, with learning situations which encompassed teaching and developing skills. Each day also started or ended with a theory session in the classroom.

Before the course, the participants were invited to teach at least one part of the course—the goal was to generate a workshop atmosphere and to come to an agreement on how, and what, to teach. Only four participants accepted this challenge, all of them chose a general sport topic. Three other participants gave a short presentation during the course without any preparation. Feedback was then given to each of these lecturers.

A CD, containing many documents, was given to each partici-pant, including a Power Point presentation for conducting Level 1 Coaching Courses (with some Level 2 elements included).

At the end of the course, the participants were assigned some “evaluation homework” to be submitted before the end of April 2009. Three topics were included. • The preparation of a coaching course• The teaching of one technical skill• The evaluation of the coach candidates

The following have already submitted their homework and passed this evaluation:• Ludys Tejada (DOM) who was the best of the evaluation with an

excellent mark of 17.5 out of 20 points!

Page 78: The Target: Summer 2009

76 The Target La Cible

• Pedro MESTRES (DOM), Maria Victoria EchavarrIa (COL), Maria Isabel CASAJOANA (ECU) and Omar MENDEZ PERNA (CUB)

• Following a remedial event, Miguel Gutierrez (CUB) and Susana KovAcs (PAR) should also pass this evaluation.

ConclusionThe feedback received from all participants was very positive for this new FITA training tool. The Colombian Archery Federation proved to be a good organizer and an excellent host. The atmo-sphere was excellent, and the training seemed to satisfy a real and important need of the FITA Member Associations.

PerspectivesThe concept of this project is under consideration for adoption in Asia, possibly in New Delhi, India. France has already agreed to host such a course, which will be the first held in Europe.
