Speaker for the day 1 st September Dr Peter Condos introduced the speaker: Lambis Englezos AM is a Greek born Australian art teacher and amateur historian who has devoted many years to uncovering truth and developing strategies to move officialdom to support this work. His extraordinary efforts have changed the lives of many people. Lambis was responsible for discovering mass war graves for some 250 lost Australian soldiers from the disastrous Battle of Fromelles from World War 1 near Fromelles in France where on July 19, 1916, Australian and British allied soldiers lost their lives at a small village in France called Fromelles. Melbourne-based Lambis delivered a factual and authoritative 30 - 40 presentation about the journey of finding these lost soldiers in France. His presentation is supported by some quite moving images of lost soldiers, mass grave sites and those of soldiers whose families now know what happened to them. Lambis said that on the 19 th July 1916 approximately 410 Australian soldiers died or were badly wounded, he said that when the battle started the German soldiers were in position for 1 and a half years and the Australian soldiers were there for only a week and said that the 15 th Brigade was wiped out. Lambis showed mind numbing slides of photographs taken by the Germans after the battle with dead bodies piled into trucks and on the ground on the battle field at Fromelles. He informed the members present that at one stage in the war the Germans asked the Australian General Mckay whether he wanted to collect the dead and the wounded and he surprisingly refused!

There were many moving stories that Lambis related of young soldiers who joined up some under age, to fight for their country, one such young man’s body was never found, and the heart rending letter his mother wrote pleading with the authorities to find her son was read out by Margie Sheldon. Lambis reminded all present that the lives lost and the history must not to be forgotten as there are many people living today whose relatives were lost and never found, he related the story of a 92 year old women who learned that her father’s remains were finally discovered. Lambis finished by saying there is more work to be done as there are many more unknown war burial sites, and that he has made it is life’s work to find them. President Peter on behalf of the Rotary Club of Essendon donated $500 for the continued good work that Lambis Englezos has dedicated his life to. Mens Shed – note from Alistair Fraser Thanks for your support in volunteering for duty on the opening day of operations at our brand new, and very

impressive, Strathmore Mens Shed last Saturday.

The day went well, we have impressed many of the people that turned up to have a look at the types of things

we would be doing at the Shed. Many were impressed at the type, quality and quantity of tools available for

their use and the possible scope of our operations.

The feed-back sheets filled out by attendees indicated that first time visitors were very impressed and they

also highlighted something we already were aware of: we urgently need suitably qualified people to lead and

supervise our Shedders.

The Shed's Community Management committee is aware of the need for supervisors and we are working to

address this ASAP. If you know of people who might be interested in volunteering as a supervisor (we can

provide some training) please let me know.

Thanks again for your support and I can assure you that nobody went hungry on the day. Once again our

Rotary Club of Essendon BBQ and our band of chefs did an excellent job.

Special thanks to Andrew Lowcock for transporting the BBQ trailer to and from the Shed in a timely manner.

Our sincere thanks also go to Roger Priestley for supplying the food for the BBQ

Help Hats Help Heads on World Mental Health Day

Hat Day is Australian Rotary Health’s national fundraising and awareness day for mental health research,

celebrated each year on World Mental Health Day - Friday October 9, 2015. Since the inaugural Hat Day in

2011, Hat Day has claimed two Guinness World Records (most people wearing paper hats & most people

wearing red hats). Hat Day recently launched a new logo, as well as a new website with social fundraising

features.

Hat Day has acquired a number of high profile ambassadors in its five years of running, including actors Elle

Dawe, Matt Lee and Pauly Fenech. Most recently, we were joined by Dr Happy – Dr Tim Sharp, Chief

Happiness Officer at the Happiness Institute. Since 2014, Hat Day has also partnered with the ABC to promote

mental health research in Australia.

Rotary Clubs have been our biggest supporters to date, and with your help we are reaching an increasing

number of organisations who are hosting Hat Day events in their workplaces. This year, clubs in Hobart,

Sydney and Melbourne will be hosting corporate launch events with high profile guests and speakers,

including Dr Happy, sharing insights on happiness.

Some other great Hat Day events and initiatives have included:

• Trivia nights – many clubs have held successful events using our trivia host kit available upon request;

• A pirate-themed river cruise;

• Taking posters and collection boxes to local business receptions;

A widely held view throughout Rotary is that the Foundation is the "engine room" of Rotary and DG Julie firmly hold that view. Therefore to learn more about the wonderful humanitarian and educational programs which your club can participate in, we recommend to you this popular seminar which will be an interactive forum for you and any Rotarian in your club. The financial support of each club to OUR Foundation throughout our District is so important for us to be able to continue to carry out the humanitarian and educational programs that Rotary is renowned for. We would also like to remind you that attendance at this seminar is essential for your club to participate in the District and Global Grants. Thoughts for the day

A heart-warming tale A mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a Harley, when he spotted a world-famous heart surgeon in his shop. The heart surgeon was waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his bike. The mechanic shouted across the garage, "Hey, Doc, can I ask you a question?" The famous surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to the mechanic working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, "So Doc, look at this engine. I can open it up, take valves out, fix 'em, put in new parts and when I finish, this will work just like a new one. So how come I get a pittance and you get the really big money, when you and I are doing basically the same work?" The surgeon paused, smiled and leaned over, and whispered to the mechanic..."Try doing it while it's running!
