Tafsir Sourate al Ikhlaç Wa Taqayid Oukhra fi ‘Ilm at Tafsir
Mohammed Ibn al Hassan al Hajoui ath Tha’alibi al Fassi
(m. 1376 H)
Abderrahmane Ibn Zakri (m.1114 H), le ‘Alem Hamdou Ibn al Has as Salmi

Wa Taqayid Ukhra fi ‘Ilm at Tafsir
(A Commentary of the [Quranic] Chapter al-Ikhlas and Other
Writings in the Exegesis Science)
Mohammed Ibn al Hassan al Hajoui ath Tha’alibi al Fassi
(died 1376 H)
When we reflect about the Quran we find that God Almighty
divided it in three parts: the first one deals with legal dispositions, the
second concerns promises and punishment threats and the third deals with
the Nouns and the [divine] attributes. God made the intentions and the
meanings of this third part contained in the Ikhlas chapter (sura): « Say:
God is One ». A Hadith (saying) of the Prophets affirms that this chapter is
equal to the third of the Quran.
As Imam Abu Abdallah al Qortubi brings out, this sublime chapter
contains the knowledge of the sacred essence and two of the divine Nouns
containing all the qualifications of perfection that we don’t find in any
other chapter: al Ahad (the One) and as Samad (the Eternal). Indeed these
two Nouns tell the uniqueness of the sacred essence that has all the
characteristics of perfection: The One expresses His unique existence to
which no one is associated and the Eternal expresses all the characteristics
of perfection. He is the Infinite which recourse is from Him to Him, and that
can be realized only by the One who has all the qualities of perfection; this
only suits God.
Due to its high rank and its eminent value this chapter has been the
subject of great interest from many Ulema specialized in exegesis who
choose it as the only matter of several books. We can cite, among others
Sheikh ar Ra’is Abu Ali ibn Sina (d. 4258 H), Sheikh Abu al Abbas Ibn
Taymiya al Harani (d. 728 H) and Sheikh Jamal ad Din al Armiuni (d. 958 H).
Among contemporary Moroccan exegetes we can find the Alem Abu
Abdallah Mohammed Ibn Abderrahmane Ibn Zakri (d. 1114 H), the Alem
Hamdu Ibn al Has as Salmi (d. 1232 H), the Faqih al Haj al-Husain al Ifrani
buried in Tiznit (d. 1328 H), the Alem, learned in Traditions (Hadits),
Mohammed Ibn Ja’far al Kettani (d. 1345 H) and the Alem and minister Abu
Abdallah Mohammed Ibn al Hasan al Hajuji at Ta’alibi (d. 1376 H) author of
the present book that is introduced and annotated for the first time by Dr
Ibrahim al Wafi who based on an author’s manuscript available in the
Rabat National Library.
This work was presented by the Alem al Hajoui in 15 lectures given
in the Mulay Idris mausoleum in Fes to close his conferences on Quran
exegesis giving a view of his broad culture -that was the tradition with the
Qarawiyin Ulemas at the closure of their lectures attended by elite and
common people – and highlighting researches ramification, texts
compilation and including other exegetes quotations and commentaries.
He composed his work in the way of famous Ulemas specialized in
language rules and meanings subtleties, bringing out his reformist and
educational approach. This is not surprising because he is one of the
important contemporary Moroccan reformist who rejected mimicking and
traditionalism and called for creative effort (Ijtihad), modernism and
renaissance.
