Sunil Patel, a.k.a Sun, is a 30-year-old delivery-man of Indian descent who leads an amazing life in contemporary Paris. But everything threatens to stop when his Chinese employers put an end to their ille-gal activities. To keep working, Sun decides to start a delivery company. His plan is quickly complica-ted by the unexpected arrival of his cousin Ash, an Indian sitar player who has come to Paris to launch his career, and to whom Sun promises a concert at the Olympia. Caught in his lies, Sun only has a few days to settle up with his past and invent a new future for himself…

Born in India, but having always lived in France, Sunil Patel, aged 30, also known as Sun, has broken off relationships with his family and his Indian background. He is occasionally a delivery boy, a swindler or a drug dealer, and he knows all the tricks in Paris but he lives by his wits. He can be boastful and crafty, and lies from time to time, but can also be generous on some occasions. He lives by night and awaits the great opportunity to make a name for himself, but it has never turned up. He is able to win everything one day before losing it all the next. Although he is constantly superactive, this being the only way he knows of living his life, he is on the verge of losing his own identity as he has no clear idea of what he is chasing after. Adaptable, versatile and individualistic, both cynical and naïve, he is truly a character of our times.

Paris is the other main character of the movie. By walking the streets of the city, by bringing out its fl avours, sounds and smells, by drawing up a sketch of its soul, Sun is an attempt to show the underground and unknown side of Paris, in all its liveliness and cosmopolitanism, with its ebb and fl ow, and its permanent show. The clash between Sun’s burlesque aspect and the exploration of Paris today will result in a highly comic tonality, verging on social satire. As a spectator of the habits and customs of each of the worlds he explores, Sun will allow us to be privileged witnesses of social hypocrisy and the masks it creates. The worlds which we will be immersed in will seem all the more grotesque, funny and intriguing as they will be dealt with in a hyper-realistic, documentary-inspired, manner, in contrast with Sun’s wily ingenuousness. The superposition of comedy and documentary will therefore give to the fi lm a very original style.

Sun is a picaresque comedy, made up of chapters in which our burlesque hero has to face a wide range of situations, each one of those episodes allowing us to dive into one of Paris underworlds. I want this fi lm to draw the outlines of a world more and more fractionated in different communities and subcultures, for better and for worse, and of a social system in which the individual is more and more isolated – nevertheless, because I think there is still hope for another and better world, I want to do so in a comical and light-hearted manner. The structure of Sun will therefore allow me, using sweeping pictures of today’s morals, to give an account of society, to analyse its absurdity and to offer a scathing critique of modernity. As the episodes go by, Sun witnesses the fading away of his identity. With each chapter, he has to start eve-rything afresh, with no other choice but to constantly have to set out to conquer the world once again. Because he only thinks of interpersonal relations in economic terms – trying to make the most of each situation – Sun loses his own substance along the way. However, as he sheds the masks behind which he hides, Sun manages to be at peace with himself in the end. Thus, although the fi lm is made up of incredible and surprising episodes, and leads us through a great many environments which make up a picture of the world surrounding us… its subject is in fact the awakening of a character’s consciousness.

In a world in search of novelty, the production company Les Produits Frais has decided to capitalize on a new generation of fi lmmakers. Being originally born out of a French higher education establishment – La Fémis, “cinéma d’auteur” is at the very core of its policy. As a result, fi lm projects are thought through with the authors, in line with Les Produits Frais’ belief that achieving high standards can only be the result of intense collaborations.

At the moment, the company operates on two different markets. The fi rst is cinema, Les Produits Frais’ original desire: the company is working on three short movies and two features projects. The company’s second target is the growing market of transmedia, a fi eld in which it is actively pursuing a wide range of activities. Les Produits Frais is currently working on projects with the French Institut National de l’Audiovisuel (INA) and with ARTE.
