Higher education in France

The ability to speak French is ... A major advantage for any academic endeavor.

A requirement for many programs.

Levels of proficiency needed to study in France Level B1 or B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for

Languages (CEFR) is recommended for succedding in French higher

education.

Level B2 of the CEFR is required to enroll in the first year of

postsecondary study.

A higher level (C1 or C2) may be required by some institutions for

certain fields of study.

Higher education in France

Baccalauréat (“bac”): Awarded upon completion of secondary

education and considered the first postsecondary diploma. Not to be

confused with a bachelor’s degree.

DSCG: Diplôme supérieur de comptabilité et de gestion (higher

diploma in accounting and management)

BTS: Brevet de technicien supérieur (higher technical certificate)

BTSA: BTS in agriculture

ECTS (European Credit Transfer System): the European system for

measuring the amount of education a student has completed.

CHU/CHRU: Centre Universitaire Hospitalier (university hospital

center). The focal point of university-based medical education.

ED: Ecole doctorale (doctoral department)

CPGE: Classe préparatoire aux Grandes Ecoles (program of

preparation for entry into one of France’s grandes écoles.

L: Licence (equivalent to a bachelor’s degree, 3 years)

CTI: Commission nationale des Titres d’ingénieurs (national

commission on engineering degrees)

Universities

France’s universities are publicly funded and

located in every region of the country.

The universities confer (i) national diplomas (Licence, Master,

Doctorate) that have the same academic value regardless of

where they are awarded, and (ii) other diplomas that are specific to

the university that confers them.

Enrollment in the first year is open to all students holding

a French baccalauréat or equivalent diploma signifying completion of

secondary study.

University programs are available in all domains of teaching

and research (sciences, letters, languages, arts, humanities, health,

athletics, and more).

The universities enroll 219,939 international students (73.6% of all

international students in France).

The Grandes É coles

Higher education in France

Some of the Grandes É coles are public; some are private.

They include schools of engineering, the venerable écoles

normales supérieures (ENS), institutes of political science (IEP),

schools of business and management, veterinary schools, and

other specialized schools.

They offer professional education of a very high caliber.

Admission is highly selective.

Grandes É coles recognized by the French government grant

diplomas from the baccalauréat to the graduate (5-year) level.

Some confer diplomas officially recognized as the equivalent of the

Master.

The Grandes É coles charge tuition that is higher than that of the

universities.

Many courses and some entire programs are taught in

English.

In 2015, France’s Grandes É coles enrolled 58,022 international

students (2015).

Specialized schools and institutes

More than 3,000 other educational institutions, public and private,

offer programs in specific sectors:

Health, paramedical occupations, media, communication, journalism,

social work, fashion, design, tourism, gastronomy, military arts,

agriculture and agronomy, and political science, among others.

These institutions may confer:

State-sanctioned diplomas (pertains only to certain institutions)

Institution-specific diplomas and certificates not recognized or regulated

by the French government

Duration of programs: 2–5 years

Admission by examination or application

and Communication Almost 50 public postsecondary schools of art and design with a national

or regional mandate

Programs in art, design, communication at 3 levels: undergraduate (3

years) and master’s level (3+2 years) degrees and some post-master

offerings)

The higher schools of applied arts overseen by the Ministry

of National Education, Higher Education, and Research 4 renowned public schools: Boulle, Estienne, Duperré, Olivier de

Serres

National diplomas (2 and 4 years) in highly specialized areas: graphic

design; spatial design; fashion, textiles and environment; art-related

products, services, and occupations

The ENSAs are a network of 20 public institutions under

the joint supervision of the ministries of culture and of

education that confer the national diplomas awarded by the 20

ENSAs.

Some of the ENSAs (Clermont-Ferrand, Lyon, Marne-La-Vallée,

Marseille, Nantes, Paris-Belleville, Paris-La Villette, Toulouse, …) offer

a joint curriculum in architecture and engineering in partnership with

Grandes É coles of engineering leading to professional qualifications in

both fields.

The Diplôme d’État d’Architecte (equivalent to the national diploma

of Master) opens the way to doctoral study.
