THE SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE

BLESSED VIRGIN MARY On Tuesday, December 8th, we celebrate the So-lemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. An essential part of God’s plan for the mother of his Son was that she be conceived free from Original Sin. “Through the centuries the Church became ev-er more aware that Mary, ‘full of grace’ through God, was redeemed from the moment of her con-ception” (CCC, no. 491). In anticipation that she was to bear the Son of God, Mary was preserved from the time of her conception from Original Sin. We call this the Immaculate Conception. No sin would touch her, so that she would be a fitting and worthy vessel of the Son of God. The Immaculate Conception does not refer to the virginal conception and birth of Christ, but rather to Mary’s being con-ceived without inheriting Original Sin. In the course of time, the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception became more precisely enunciated, as its truth— long supported by the universal popular devotion of the faithful—was better understood by deepening theological inquiry. In 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed this dogma infalli-bly: that is, in his role as supreme teacher of the Church, he declared that this doctrine is divinely revealed and must be accepted with faith by the en-tire Church. This is a holy day. Collection will be taken up on this day. Mass Schedule: Vigil Mass, December 7, 5:00 PM English, 7:00 PM Spanish

December 8: 7:00 AM English, 7:00 PM Spanish This article was an excerpt from the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults (Washington, DC: USCCB, 2006) 141–143, 149.

Eucharistic Miracles From the website of Blessed Carlo Acutis. To learn more about Blessed Carlo Acutis visit his website at www.carloacutis.com or to view his exhibition web-site on the Miracles visit: www.miracolieucaristici.org.

Eucharistic Miracle of Eten, Peru in 1649 The first apparition of the Divine Child in the Most Holy Sacrament took place on the night of June 2, 1649, during the Vespers and the solemn exposition in honor of the feast of Corpus Christi. At the end of the service, the Franciscan monk Jerome de Silva Manrique, was about to return the monstrance to the tabernacle, but he sudden-ly stopped. In the Host there appeared the brilliant face of a Child, framed by thick brown curls that falling to the shoulders. All the faithful present in the church experienced the same vision. The second apparition took place a few days later, on July 22 of the same year, during the celebrations in honor of St. Mary of Magda-lene, Patroness of the city. According to the testimony of Brother Marco Lopez, superior of the convent in Chiclayo, during the expo-sition of the Most Holy Sacrament “the Divine Child Jesus again appeared in the Host, dressed in a purple tunic. Beneath it he wore a shirt up to the middle of the chest, according to the custom of the South American Indians. Through this sign, the Divine Child want-ed to identify with the Mochica inhabitants of Eten, to demonstrate His love for them. In the same apparition, which lasted about 15 minutes, many also saw appearing in the Host three small white hearts, united among themselves. These symbolized the Three Per-sons of the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, present in the consecrated Host. To this day, the feast in honor of the Miracle of the Divine Child of Eten, continues to attract thou-sands of faithful yearly.

The Eucharistic Mira-cle of Eten happened about 365 years ago in the Peruvian town of Port Eten. In a Host exposed for public ad-oration, there appeared the Child Jesus and three interconnected hearts of a brilliant white color. Every year, the feast in honor of this event begins on July 12, with the trans-fer of the Host of the Miracle from its Sanc-tuary to the church in the City of Eten, and it ends on July 24.

A prayer for putting on a Face Mask:

Creator God, as I prepare to go into the world, help me to see the sacramental nature of wearing of this cloth. Let it be a tangible and visible way of living love for my neighbors, as I love myself. Christ Jesus, since my lips will be covered, uncover my heart, that people would see my smile in the wrinkles around my eyes. Since my voice may be muffled, help me to speak clearly, not only with my words, but with my actions. Holy Spirit, as the elastic touches my ears, remind me to listen carefully and caringly to all those I meet. May this simple piece of cloth be shield and banner, and may each breath that it holds, be filled with Your love. In Your name and in that love, I pray. Amen

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The rugged land shall be made a plain; the rough country, a broad valley (Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11). Psalm — Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation (Psalm 85). Second Reading — Conduct yourselves in holiness, hastening the coming of the day of God (2 Peter 3:8-14). Gospel — I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit (Mark 1:1-8). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

THE BEGINNING With COVID-19, much time is spent wondering “where did it start?” or “who passed it on to whom?” Though science can tell us much there are many unanswered questions. Today’s Gospel is about as concrete as sacred scripture gets. We know this is the beginning of the Gospel of Mark, which was the first Gospel to be written down in about 70 AD. Unlike Luke and John, Mark does not begin with an infancy narrative of Jesus. He starts by proclaiming the prophecy of Isaiah. This section was written six hundred years before Christ, in another time of great upheaval, as the Israelites were displaced from their homeland during the Babylonian Exile. The first words of Isaiah 40 are “Comfort, comfort, my people.” John the Baptist starts by ex-plaining he is the go-between, sent to “Prepare the way.”

DON’T SHOOT THE MESSENGER While proclaiming the coming Christ is a thing of joy, John’s words are also harsh, reminding us to repent and prepare. People were threatened by them two thousand years ago, and some still are today. People can hear them and be turned off by “fire and brimstone,” and none of us like to be told what to do. But think about it. This year, we have all engaged in social distancing and endured hardships to protect our families and others. Similarly, when you have company coming, you do house cleaning, meal prep, and lots of things to make the place ready for the arrival of your guests—necessary preparation. So we as individuals must make ourselves ready for the coming Christ to reside in us. This may mean repenting for sins, seeking the sacrament of penance, or taking time with a spiritual director. Perhaps it means carving out more times and places for Christ to be born in our hearts or taking on another spiritual practice. Maybe it means simply doing what the psalm asked and us-ing our eyes and ears and mind and heart to seek Christ.

FEAST OF FAITH Watching for Christ’s Coming

In the season of Advent, we look to the coming of Christ at the end of time, and we prepare ourselves to celebrate his first coming among us at Christmas. Remembrance of the past is combined with preparation for the future. Memory meets action. In a certain sense, the Mass is an Advent prayer. At the Last Supper, Jesus did not tell his disciples, “Never forget what I did for you.” In-stead, he said, “Do this in remembrance of me.” He calls us to re-member by doing, to combine memory with action. In the celebration of the Eucharist, remembering and doing become one. Jesus is as pre-sent in our midst as he was in that upper room, breaking the bread and sharing the cup; but it is a new kind of presence, seen only with the eyes of faith. In the heavenly liturgy, there will be no need of sac-raments, for there, “celebration is wholly communion and feast” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1136). Here, things are different. We have only glimpses and flashes of the beauty that is yet to be. And yet, in the liturgy, we truly participate in the heavenly lit-urgy. The Mass is our foretaste of the joys of heaven.

Second Sunday of Advent

December 6, 2020

I n 2020, we heard plenty of voices speak-ing out and sharing their opinions, but

many of those words were not comforting or hope-filled. Sometimes, it was hard to know which expert or “instant expert” to listen to, and it is still difficult to hope as we struggle to regain our balance as a nation and as a Church. The Word of God offers us peace this day. All our readings remind us of a faithful God who always keeps the promises made. Isaiah prophesied about the end of Jerusalem’s time away from God, and the Psalm speaks of “seeing God’s kindness and hearing what God proclaims.” Second Peter explains that God’s timing may not be the same as ours, but good things await those who are alert. In the Gospel, John the Baptist reiterates and completes the prophecy of Isai-ah by laying the groundwork and preparing the way for those who await the coming of the Messiah.
