Dear Friends,

Nobody likes to wait. Collectively speaking, it’s probably our least favorite thing to do. Products,

services and even entire industries have been developed in an effort to avoid waiting. The mass marketing of

the microwave oven thirty years ago to save time cooking was just the beginning. In an age where overnight

delivery just isn't fast enough, same-day delivery is just a click or tap away.

Leading a Christian life these days can be quite counter cultural. It often requires bearing witness to

the Gospel by doing things that may be unpopular. Toward the end of every calendar year, the Church asks

us to do something extremely out of vogue. Every Advent we are asked to wait.

Perhaps the only thing worse than the prolonged anticipation of a long wait is waiting alone.

Thankfully, and by no accident, we do our waiting as a community of believers. We join with one another in

joyful expectation of something to come. Particularly in Advent, that something is the coming of Our Savior at

Christmas.

Not only do we have one another to rely upon as we await the coming of Jesus, but we also have a

very special companion at this time. Mary, the Mother of God, stands before us as a perfect example of

patience and selfless surrender to God. Just about one week into every Advent the Church commemorates

Our Lady’s Immaculate Conception. What better time than Advent for us to honor her as the fairest of the

human race!

As we anticipate the coming of Jesus this Advent, we are far from alone. Rather, we join with one

another and with Mary conceived without sin, the first among us to live in expectation of Christ’s birth and

the dawn of the Gospel. To paraphrase a common adage: The Good News comes to those who wait.

Love & Prayers,

Father Marty

The Second Sunday of Advent Gathering: O Come Divine Messiah

Venez, divin Messie; AbbŽ Simon-Joseph Pellegrin, 1663-1745

O come, Divine Messiah, The world in silence waits the day When hope shall sing its triumph, And sadness flee away.

Dear Savior, haste! Come, come to earth. Dispel the night and show your face, And bid us hail the dawn of grace.

O come, Divine Messiah, The world in silence waits the day When hope shall sing its triumph, And sadness flee away

O come Desired of nations, Whom priest and prophet long foretold,

Will break the captive fetters, Redeem the long-lost fold

O come in peace and meekness, For lowly will your cradle be:

Though clothed in human weakness We shall your Godhead see.

Reading 1 - IS 40:1-5, 9-11 Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her service is at an end, her guilt is expiated; indeed, she has received from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins. A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the LORD! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God! Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low; the rugged land shall be made a plain, the rough country, a broad valley. Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken. Go up on to a high mountain, Zion, herald of glad tidings; cry out at the top of your voice, Jerusalem, herald of good news! Fear not to cry out and say to the cities of Judah: Here is your God! Here comes with power the Lord GOD, who rules by his strong arm; here is his reward with him, his recompense before him. Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs, carrying them in his bosom, and leading the ewes with care.

Reading 2 2PT 3:8-14 Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day. The Lord does not delay his promise, as some regard “delay,” but he is patient with you, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and the elements will be dissolved by fire, and the earth and everything done on it will be found out. Since everything is to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be, conducting yourselves in holiness and devotion, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved in flames and the elements melted by fire. But according to his promise we await new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you await these things, be eager to be found without spot or blemish before him, at peace.

Gospel - MK 1:1-8 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. A voice of one crying out in the desert: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” John the Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. People of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. John was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He fed on locusts and wild honey. And this is what he proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not

worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Profession of Faith I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

A Note from the Director: It is with deep regret that St. Columbkill Preschool will not be opening for the 2020-2021 school year due to the substantial increase in Covid cases in Berks and Montgomery Counties. While this was an extremely difficult decision to make, ultimately we feel that it is in the best interest of the students and staff to delay our preschool reopening until September 2021. We will now turn our attention to a safe reopening next fall and regis-tration for the 2021-2022 school year is now open. We will again be waiving the $35 registration fee. Thank you for your continued support of our preschool program. Please contact Caitlin Nickel with any questions at 610-367-2371 or email [email protected].

Have you considered a Year-End Charitable Contribution?

If you itemize your deductions, making charitable contribu-

tions to your parish can decrease your tax bill. Donating a

long-term appreciated asset such as a bond or stocks gener-

ally means that you do not have to pay capital gains, and

you can take an income tax deduction for the full fair-market

value.

Saint Columbkill currently has an account with TD Ameri-

trade, where parishioners can seamlessly transfer assets over

from their own accounts.

For those not itemizing, another smart year-end strategy is

the Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). A QCD is gen-

erally a nontaxable

distribution made directly by the trustee of your IRA to an

organization eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions.

You must be at least age 70 ½ when the distribution is made.

The maximum annual exclusion for QCDs is $100,000 per

individual.

These gifts to Saint Columbkill Church provide a lasting bene-

fit to help our parish continue to serve those in need, and

assure that necessary parish expenses can be met. For more

information on these two valuable tax benefits, please con-

sult your tax advisor or IRA Trustee. Our Parish Financial

Officer Gayle Fontaine is also available to answer any general

questions concerning this method of donation.

Thank you in advance for your stewardship.

Adult Choir - Yes, there is an adult choir that sings many Sundays at the 9am Mass! We concentrate on Advent, Christmas and Lent seasons, as well as Easter, Mother's Day and Pentecost, and a few other Sundays for good measure. No audition, no need to read music! We practice many Sundays after the 9am Mass. Once and done for the week! Come check us out in the Ehst room (downstairs)! Contact Deb Maskrey at [email protected] for a schedule or with any questions. To Be Announced Cantors/Leaders of Song - our ranks have dwindled with the graduation of many of our youth cantors, and we need to increase the number of cantors for scheduling. Support is available by means of practice sessions with the organist/accompanist. This is a great opportunity for youth grades 7 and up to serve the parish community. It is also a great opportunity for parents to set the example for children by serving as a leader of song. Contact Deb Maskrey at [email protected] with questions or for more information, or chat with one of our current cantors! Put your piano lessons to good use! The children's choir and the adult choir of the parish could use an accompanist. Contact Caro-lyn Quinn for children's choir information and Deb Maskrey for the adult choir.

Deacon Joe Petrauskas, CRS Global Fellow

CRS and USAID work together where the needs are ur-gent and our resources can save lives. That’s exactly why we are on the frontlines of Mali. By overcoming insecurity and infrastructure challenges, we recently provided food and shelter to over 1,500 people displaced by violence. Visit www.crs.org today for more information and to see how you can help. Thanks for your support!

LAOH: Our Christmas dinner has been cancelled. We will have a meeting in the Knights of Columbus room on Monday, December 7th at 7pm. Irish Fun Facts: “During Advent, our Irish ancestors would paint their outhouses. It was carried out mainly by the men while the women scrubbed the interiors. It dates back to pre-Christianity and is generally regarded as the ancient version of spring-cleaning. With the arrival of Christianity the tradition was rebranded as a homely preparation for the arrival of Mary, Joseph and the new-born baby, Jesus.” (https://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Irish-Christmas-traditions.html)

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION ~ A JOURNEY: We are all on a journey and life is about going on the journey, not the getting there. It is in the seeking, questioning, and dreaming in our inner knowledge that we will find the Divine and find what is holy. This is how we will discover a way. a truth, and a light. A proven way to continue this journey is through spiritual direction. If interested in exploring this process please call Kevin Martin, O.F.S, M.S. at: 610-310- 7077 or Peg Choinski at 610-850-1869 or email Peg at [email protected]. All inquiries are confidential.

Saint Francis Home, Shillington

Per letter from the Board of Directors at St. Francis Home:

In March, St. Francis Hospice, Shillington, closed the

Home because volunteers were few and were doing dou-

ble/triple duty. There have been at least two dozen re-

quests for admission to St. Francis Home, since March.

They would like to reopen in the Spring.

They reached out to 102 volunteers on file. Thirty are

ready to return now. Thirty more wish to wait. They

need 2 volunteers for each 4-hour shift. Therefore, 70

volunteers are needed each week.

They are asking “ DO YOU WANT TO VOLUNTEER OR

KNOW ANYONE WHO MIGHT?” Please spread the

word.
