    Tips on radio w aves

What is SSB (Single Side Band)?

SSB is very popular am ong ham and business radio transmissions, and is comm only used in many am ateur band s because of itssuperiority in signal intelligibility. Its impressive signal intelligibilityis achieved with m inimum interferences when compared to DSB(Double Side Band ) owing to its half band width stru cture.

In general, SSB transmissions employ the USB (Upp er Side Band)mod ulation, while amateur band transmissions below 10 MHzemp loy the LSB (Lower Side Band ) mod ulation.

Conventional radios without a BFO(Beat Frequency Oscillator) circuitcannot receive SSB transmissionssuccessfully. This un it can receiveSSB transm issions successfully withthe bu ilt-in BFO (Beat FrequencyOscillator) circuit.

    What is CW (Continuous Wave)?

CW is also popu lar among ham and business rad io transmissions.Unlike other signals, the amplitud e of a carrier is not modulated forCW transmissions. CW transmissions convey information byinterrupting the carrier and use Morse code as a m eans ofcommunication.

This unit can receive CW transmissions successfully w ith the bu ilt-inBFO (Beat Frequ ency Oscillator) circuit as beat sou nd only. To fullycomp rehend the information transm itted by CW transmissions, anunderstanding of the Morse code is prerequisite.

    What is synchronous detection?

There are tw o underlying obstacles in optimum AM reception:d istortions du e to fad ing and interferences from ad jacent broadcaststations.

Synchronous detection is effective in solving these obstacles.

Distortions due to fad ing are generally caused by over-mod ulationwhich occurs when a carrier component of the received signal isattenuated along the way. The synchronous detection circuit of thisunit generates a pu re carrier frequency with no level variation whichis ideally synchron ized w ith the original carrier to compensate forthe attenuated carrier component, thus d ramatically reducingdistortion.

Likewise, AM (LW, MW, and SW) broad cast generally emp loys DSB(Double Side Band ) signals for transmissions in w hich the modulatedsignals are transmitted using both the upper and lower side bands
