Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (تعالی عنہ آله وسلم) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (رضئ اللہ (صلى اللہ عليه و

Abu Huraira (عنہ تعالی اللہ وسلم) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (رضئ آله و عليه اللہ ,said (صلى

‘exhort to recite, ‘there is no god but Allah ( لا إله إلا الل ) to those of you who are dying.

CHAPTER (2)

باب ما يقال عند المصيبة

What should be said at times of calamity?


بن جعفر، إسماعيل وقتيبة، وابن، حجر جميعا عن بن أيوب، إسماعيل، -حدثنا يحيى بن -قال ابن أيوب حدثنا أخبرني سعد

وإنا إليه راجعون اللهم أجرني إنا لل له .را منها في مصيبتي وأخلف لي خي مسلم تصيبه مصيبة فيقول ما أمره الل إلا أخلف الل

"فقال .يخطبني له فقلت إن لي بنتا وأنا غيور ا ابنتها فندعو الل أن يذهب بالغيرة أم . " أن يغنيها عنها وأدعو الل

Ummul Momineen Umm Salama (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) narrated that the Apostle of Allah ( صلى اللہ

وسلم آله و said, ‘any Muslim who suffers some calamity says, what Allah has commanded (عليه

him – منها خيرا لي وأخلف مصيبتي في أجرني اللهم راجعون إليه وإنا لل we belong to Allah and to Him] إنا

shall we return; O Allah, reward me for my affliction and give me something better than it in

exchange for it], Allah will give him something better than it in exchange. When (her husband)

Abu Salama (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) died, she said, ‘what Muslim is better than Abu Salama ( رضئ اللہ

I ,(صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) whose family was the first to emigrate to the Apostle of Allah (تعالی عنہ

said the words and Allah gave me His Messenger (آله وسلم ,in exchange. She said (صلى اللہ عليه و

‘he, the Apostle of Allah (وسلم آله و عليه اللہ sent Hatib bin Abu Balta to deliver me the (صلى

message of marriage with him. I said to him: I have a daughter (as my dependent) and I am of

zealous temperament. He (the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, So far as her daughter is concerned, we would

supplicate Allah that He may free her (of her responsibility) and I would also supplicate Allah to

do away with (her) zealous (temperament).



أفلح، قال سمعت ابن سفينة، بن كثير بن وحدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة، حدثنا أبو أسامة، عن سعد بن سعيد، قال أخبرني عمر

وإنا إ في مصيبته مصيبة فيقول إنا لل وأخلف له خيرا ليه راجعون اللهم أجرني في مصيبتي وأخلف لي خيرا منها إلا أجره الل

صلى اللہ . "منها ا توف ي أبو سلمة قلت كما أمرني رسول الل صلى اللہ قالت فلم لي خيرا منه رسول الل عليه وسلم فأخلف الل

.عليه وسلم


said, ‘if any servant (of Allah) who suffers a calamity says, ‘we belong to Allah and (عليه و آله وسلم

to Him shall we return, O Allah, reward me for my affliction and give me something better than

it in exchange for it], Allah will give him reward for affliction and would give him something

better than it in exchange. She said, when Abu Salama (تعالی عنہ died. I uttered (these (رضئ اللہ

very words) as I was commanded (to do) by the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم). So, Allah

gave me better in exchange than him. I was taken as the wife of the Apostle of Allah ( صلى اللہ عليه

.(و آله وسلم

,said, like the Hadith transmitted by Abu Usama, but with this addition that she said (عليه و آله وسلم

‘when Abu Salama (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) died I said, who is better than Abu Salama ( رضئ اللہ تعالی

and Allah decided for me and I ,(صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) the companion of the Apostle of Allah ,(عنہ

said (these words contained in the supplication mentioned above) and I was married to the

Apostle of Allah ( لمصلى اللہ عليه و آله وس ).

CHAPTER (3)

باب ما يقال عند المريض والمي ت

What is to be said in the presence of the sick and the dying?



شق عن الأعمش، عن معاوية، أبو حدثنا قالا كريب وأبو شيبة، أبي بن بكر أبو حدثنا رسول الل قال قالت سلمة، أم عن يق،

نون على ما تقولون ا خ المي ت فقولوإذا حضرتم المريض أو "صلى اللہ عليه وسلم ا مات أبو . " يرا فإن الملائكة يؤم قالت فلم

إن أبا سلمة قد مات قال ه وأعقبني منه عقبى قولي اللهم اغفر لي ول "سلمة أتيت النبي صلى اللہ عليه وسلم فقلت يا رسول الل

وسلمعليه و آله ) said, ‘whenever you visit the sick or the dead, supplicate for good because angels

say ‘Amen’ to whatever you say. She added, ‘when Abu Salama (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) died, I went to

the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) and said, Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم), Abu

Salama (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) has died. He told me to recite - وأعقبني منه عقبى حسنة وله O] اللهم اغفر لي

Allah! forgive me and him and give me a better substitute than he]. So, I said (this), and Allah

gave me in exchange Muhammad (وسلم آله و عليه اللہ who is better for me than him (Abu ,(صلى

Salama عنہ یرضئ اللہ تعال ).

CHAPTER (4)

باب في إغماض المي ت والدعاء له إذا حضر

Closing the eyes of the deceased and supplicating for him when he dies


بن عمرو، بن حرب، حدثنا معاوية بن حدثني زهير قبيصة خالد الحذاء، عن أبي قلابة، عن ، عن إسحاق الفزاري أبو حدثنا

صلى اللہ عليه وسلم على أبي سلمة وقد شق بصره ف وح إذا "ل أغمضه ثم قاذؤيب، عن أم سلمة، قالت دخل رسول الل إن الر

نون على ما تقولون " فضج ناس من أهله فقال . "قبض تبعه البصر ثم قال . "لا تدعوا على أنفسكم إلا بخير فإن الملائكة يؤم

يا رب اللهم اغفر لأبي " وله لنا له في سلمة وارفع درجته في المهدي ين واخلفه في عقبه في الغابرين واغفر العالمين وافسح

ر له فيه .قبره . " ونو


His eyes were fixedly open. He .(as he died) (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) came to Abu Salama (عليه و آله وسلم

closed them, and then said, ‘when the soul is taken away the sight follows it. Some of the people

of his family wept and wailed. So, he said, ‘do not supplicate for yourselves anything but good,

for angels say ‘Amen’ to what you say. He then said, اللهم اغفر لأبي سلمة وارفع درجته في المهدي ين واخلفه

ر له فيه . واغفر لنا وله يا رب العالمين وافسح له في قبره في عقبه في الغابرين ونو [O Allah, forgive Abu Salama

raise his degree among those who are rightly guided, grant him a successor in ,(رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ)

his descendants who remain. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the Universe, and make his grave

spacious, and grant him light in it].



بن معاذ بن المثنى حدثنا ، الواسطي القطان موسى بن د محم خالد وحدثنا حدثنا الحسن، بن حدثنا عبيد الل أبي، حدثنا معاذ،

وزاد . "افسح له " يقل ولم . "اللهم أوسع له في قبره "وقال . " واخلفه في تركته "الحذاء، بهذا الإسناد نحوه غير أنه قال

.قال خالد الحذاء ودعوة أخرى سابعة نسيتها

This Hadith has been narrated by Khalid al Hadhdha' with the same chain of transmitters but

with this alteration that he said, ‘O Allah, You be the caretaker of what is left by him’, and he

said, ‘grant him expansion of the grave’, but he did not say, ‘make his grave spacious’. Khalid

said, ‘he supplicated for the seventh (thing too) which I have forgotten’.

CHAPTER (5)

بصر المي ت يتبع نفسه باب في شخوص

The upward gaze of the deceased follows his soul


اق، أخبرنا ابن جريج، عن العلاء بن، ز د بن رافع، حدثنا عبد الر يعقوب قال أخبرني أبي أنه، سمع أبا هريرة، يقول وحدثنا محم

صلى اللہ عليه وسلم "فذلك حين يتبع بصره نفسه "قال .قالوا بلى ."ألم تروا الإنسان إذا مات شخص بصره "قال رسول الل

Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) said, ‘did

you not see when the man dies and his eyes were fixedly open? Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ)

said, ‘yes’. The Prophet(صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) said, it is due to the fact that when (the soul leaves

the body) his eyesight follows the soul.

This Hadith is narrated on the authority of Ala' with the same chain of transmitters.


CHAPTER (6)

باب البكاء على المي ت

Crying for the deceased


عن ابن أبي -قال ابن نمير حدثنا سفيان، -بكر بن أبي شيبة، وابن، نمير وإسحاق بن إبراهيم كلهم عن ابن، عيينة وحدثنا أبو

منه تين فكففت عن البكاء فلم أبك . "أتريدين أن تدخلي الشيطان بيتا أخرجه الل .مر

Ummul Momineen Umm Salama (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) narrated that Abu Salama ( عالی عنہرضئ اللہ ت )

died, ‘I said, ‘I am a stranger in a strange land; I shall weep for him in a manner that would be

talked of. I made preparation for weeping for him when a woman from the upper side of the city

came there who intended to help me (in weeping). She happened to come across the Apostle of

Allah (وسلم آله و عليه اللہ and he said, ‘do you intend to bring the devil into a house from (صلى

which Allah has twice driven him out’? I (Umm Salama تعال عنہا یرضئ اللہ ), therefore, refrained

from weeping and I did not weep.

قال رسول الل يا ما هذا سعد له فقال عيناه ففاضت شنة كأنها في تقعقع وإنما "ونفسه عباده قلوب في رحمة جعلها الل هذه

حماء من عباده الر . " يرحم الل

Usama bin Zaid (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that while we were with the Apostle of Allah ( صلى اللہ

to call him and inform him that (صلى الله عليه وسلم the Apostle) one of his daughters sent to him ,(عليه و آله وسلم

her child or her son was dying. The Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) told the messenger to

go back and tell her that what Allah had taken belonged to Him, and to him belonged what He

granted; and He has an appointed time for everything. So, you (the messenger) order her to show

endurance and seek reward from Allah. The messenger came back and said, ‘she adjures him to

come to her. He got up to go accompanied by Sa'd bin 'Ubada, Mu'adh bin Jabal ( یرضئ اللہ تعال

and I also went along with them. The child was lifted to him and his soul was feeling as ,(عنہما

restless as if it was in an old (waterskin). His (Prophet's صلى الله عليه وسلم) eyes welled up with tears. Sa'd ( رضئ

عنہ تعالی وسلم) said, ‘what is this, Apostle of Allah (اللہ آله و عليه اللہ He replied, ‘this is ?(صلى

compassion which Allah has placed in the hearts of His servants, and Allah shows compassion

only to those of His servants who are compassionate.

This Hadith has been narrated by another chain of transmitters on the authority of Asim al-

Ahwal.

صلى اللہ عليه وسلم بكوا فقال فبكى رسول الل .قالوا لا يا رسول الل ا رأى القوم بكاء رسول الل ألا " صلى اللہ عليه وسلم فلم

Abdullah bin Umar said that Sa'd bin Ubada complained of illness. The Apostle of Allah ( صلى اللہ

وسلم آله و came to visit him accompanied by Abdur Rahman bin 'Auf, Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas (عليه

and Abdullah bin Mas'ud (). As he entered (his room) he found him in a swoon. Upon this he

said, has he died? They said, Apostle of Allah, it is not so. The Apostle of Allah ( صلى اللہ عليه و آله

weeping, they also began (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) wept. When the people saw Allah's Apostle (وسلم

to weep. He said, ‘listen, Allah does not punish for the tears that the eye sheds or the grief the

heart feels, but He punishes for this (pointing to his tongue), or He may show mercy.

CHAPTER (7)

باب في عيادة المرضى

Visiting the sick


بن جهضم، حدثنا إسماعيل، د ، حدثنا محم بن المثنى العنزي د -يعني ابن غزية -عن عمارة، -وهو ابن جعفر -وحدثنا محم

بن صلى اللہ عليه وسلم إذ جاءه رجل من عن سعيد بن الحارث بن المعلى، عن عبد الل عمر، أنه قال كنا جلوسا مع رسول الل

صلى اللہ عليه وسلم فقال . "ن عبادة يا أخا الأنصار كيف أخي سعد ب "الأنصار فسلم عليه ثم أدبر الأنصاري فقال رسول الل


صلى اللہ عليه وسلم .صالح فقام وقمنا معه ونحن بضعة عشر ما علينا نعال ولا خفاف . "من يعوده منكم "فقال رسول الل

ال تلك في نمشي قمص ولا قلانس وسلم ولا عليه اللہ صلى الل رسول دنا حتى حوله من قومه فاستأخر جئناه حتى باخ س

وأصحابه الذين معه

Abdullah bin Umar (تعالی عنہ narrated that while they were sitting with the Apostle of (رضئ اللہ

Allah ( اللہ وسلمصلى آله و عليه ), a person, one of the Ansar, came to him and greeted him. The

Ansari then turned back. Upon this the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) said, ‘O brother of

Ansar, how is my brother Sa'd bin Ubada (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ)? He said, ‘he is better. The Apostle

of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) said, who among you would visit him? He (the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) stood

up and we also got up along with him, and we were more than ten persons. We had neither shoes

with us, nor socks, nor caps, nor shirts. We walked on the barren land till we came to him. The

people around him kept away till the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) and his companions

with him came near Sa'd bin Ubada (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ).

CHAPTER (8)

بر على المصيبة عند الصدمة الأولى باب في الص

Patience in bearing calamity when it first strikes


د، محم حدثنا ، العبدي بشار بن د محم ابن -حدثنا قال -جعفر يعني يقول مالك، بن أنس سمعت قال ثابت، عن شعبة، حدثنا

صلى اللہ عليه وسلم دمة الأولى " رسول الل بر عند الص . "الص

Anas bin Malik (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the Apostle of Allah ( ى اللہ عليه و آله وسلمصل ) said,

‘endurance is to be shown at the first blow (of calamity).


، د بن المثنى، حدثنا عثمان بن عمر، أخبرنا شعبة، عن ثابت البناني صلى اللہ عليه وحدثنا محم عن أنس بن مالك، أن رسول الل

لها فقال لها واصبري " وسلم أتى على امرأة تبكي على صبي إنه .فقالت وما تبالي بمصيبتي . " اتقي الل ا ذهب قيل لها فلم

صلى اللہ عليه وسلم رسول لم أع .الل ابين فقالت يا رسول الل "فقال .رفك فأخذها مثل الموت فأتت بابه فلم تجد على بابه بو

ل صدمة بر عند أو دمة عند أو " أو قال . "إنما الص . " ل الص

Anas bin Malik (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) came

to a woman who had been weeping for her (dead) child and said to her, ‘fear Allah and show

endurance. She (not recognizing him) said, ‘you have not been afflicted as I have been. When he

(the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) had departed, it was said to her that he was the Apostle of Allah ( صلى اللہ عليه و آله

she was mortally shocked. She came to his door and she did not find doorkeepers at his ,(وسلم


door. She said, Apostle of Allah (وسلم آله و عليه اللہ ,I did not recognize you. He said ,(صلى

‘endurance is to be shown at first blow, or at the first blow.

A Hadith like this is narrated with the same chain of transmitters but with the addition of these

words, ‘the Apostle of Allah ( وسلم آله و عليه اللہ happened to pass by a woman (who was (صلى

sitting) by the side of a grave.’

CHAPTER (9)

باب المي ت يعذب ببكاء أهله عليه

The deceased is tormented because of his family's crying for him

Abdullah bin Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that Ummul Momineen Hafsa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا)

wept for Umar ( تعال ی عنہرضئ اللہ ). Umar (تعالی عنہ said, ‘be quiet my daughter. Don't (رضئ اللہ

you know that the Apostle of Allah (وسلم آله و عليه had said, ‘the deceased is punished (صلى اللہ

because of his family's weeping over the death’?


شعبة، قال سمعت قتادة، يحد بن جعفر، حدثنا د بشار، حدثنا محم بن د بن المسيب، عن ابن عمر، عن حدثنا محم سعيد ث عن

صلى اللہ عليه وسلم قال . " مي ت يعذب في قبره بما نيح عليه ال " عمر، عن النبي

Umar(رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) said, ‘the dead is

punished in the grave because of wailing on him/her’.

This Hadith is narrated on the authority of Umar (عنہ تعالی اللہ through another chain of (رضئ

transmitters.

Ibn Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that when Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) was wounded, he fainted,

and there was a loud lamentation over him. When he regained consciousness he said, didn't you

know that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) said, ‘the dead is punished because of the

weeping of the living’?

Abu Burda ( عالی عنہرضئ اللہ ت ) narrated on the authority of his father that when Umar ( رضئ اللہ تعالی

uttered (loudly in lamentation), O brother. Upon this (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) was wounded Suhaib (عنہ

Umar (تعالی عنہ تعالی عنہ) said, Suhaib (رضئ اللہ did you not know that the Apostle of ,(رضئ اللہ

Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) said, ‘the dead is punished because of the lamentation of the living’?


أب بن صفوان شعيب بن حجر، أخبرنا بن أبي موسى، عن أبي وحدثني علي بردة بن، عمير عن أبي و يحيى، عن عبد الملك

ا أصيب عمر أقبل صهيب من منزله حتى دخل على عمر فقام بحياله يبكي على تبكي قال فقال عمر علام تبكي أ موسى، قال لم

لعليك أبكي يا أمير المؤمنين صلى اللہ عليه وسلم قال .إي والل لقد علمت أن رسول الل . "من يبكى عليه يعذب " قال والل

. فقال كانت عائشة تقول إنما كان أولئك اليهود قال فذكرت ذلك لموسى بن طلحة


Abu Musa (عنہ تعالی اللہ عنہ) narrated that when Umar (رضئ تعالی اللہ was wounded, there (رضئ

came Suhaib (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) from his house and went to Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) and stood by

his side, and began to wail. Upon this Umar said, ‘what are you weeping for? Are you weeping

for me? He said, ‘by Allah, it is for you that I weep, ‘O Commander of the believers’. He said,

‘by Allah, you already know that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) had said, ‘he who is

lamented upon is punished. I made a mention of it to Musa bin Talha, and he said that Ummul

Momineen A'isha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) told that it concerned with Jews (only).

Anas (تعالی عنہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that when Umar bin Khattab (رضئ اللہ ,was wounded (رضئ اللہ

Ummul Momineen Hafsa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) lamented for him. Upon this he said, ‘O Hafsa, did

you not hear the Apostle of Allah ( وسلمصلى اللہ عليه و آله ) saying, ‘one who is lamented would be

punished’? Suhaib (تعالی عنہ تعالی عنہ) also lamented over him. Umar (رضئ اللہ told him (رضئ اللہ

also, ‘O Suhaib (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), didn't you know that one who is lamented is punished?

بنت أبان أم ننتظر جنازة فأراه أخبره بمكان ابن عم ونحن يقوده قائد بن عثمان فجاء ابن عباس ر، فجاء عثمان وعنده عمرو

ابن عمر فقال الدار من صوت فإذا بينهما فكنت جنبي إلى جلس يعر -حتى فينهاهم كأنه يقوم أن عمرو على سمعت -ض

صلى اللہ عليه وسلم يقول مرسلة . "إن المي ت ليعذب ببكاء أهله "رسول الل فقال ابن عباس كنا مع أمير .قال فأرسلها عبد الل

جل ؤمنين عمر بن الخطاب حتى إذا كنا بالبيداء إذا هو برجل نازل في شجرة فقال لي اذ الم فذهبت .هب فاعلم لي من ذاك الر

قال .فقلت إن معه أهله .قال مره فليلحق بنا .أن أعلم لك من ذاك وإنه صهيب فرجعت إليه فقلت إنك أمرتني .فإذا هو صهيب

فليلحق بنا -وإن كان معه أهله يلبث أمير -وربما قال أيوب مره ا قدمنا لم يقول واأخاه فلم المؤمنين أن أصيب فجاء صهيب

صلى اللہ عليه وسلم قال -قال أيوب أو قال أولم تعلم أولم تسمع -فقال عمر ألم تعلم أو لم تسمع .واصاحباه إن "أن رسول الل

ا عمر فقال ببعض . "لمي ت ليعذب ببعض بكاء أهله ا وأم فأرسلها مرسلة ا عبد الل فقمت فدخلت على عائشة فحدثتها .قال فأم

ما قا صلى اللہ عليه وسلم قط بما، قال ابن عمر فقالت لا والل إن الكافر "ولكنه قال . "إن المي ت يعذب ببكاء أحد " ل رسول الل

لهو أضحك وأبكى ولا تزر وازرة وزر ببكاء أهله عذابا وإن الل قال أيوب قال ابن أبي مليكة حدثني القاسم . "أخرى يزيده الل

Abdullah bin Abu Mulaika narrated that he was sitting by the side of Ibn Umar ( تعالی رضئ اللہ

عنہا) and we were waiting for the bier of Umm Aban ,(عنہ تعالی اللہ daughter of Uthman ,(رضئ

and there was also Amr bin 'Uthman. In the meanwhile, there came Ibn Abbas ,(رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ)

رضئ ) led by a guide. I conceive that he was informed of the place of Ibn Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ)

تعالی عنہ So, he came till he sat by my side. While I was between them (Ibn Abbas and Ibn .(اللہ

Umar - ( تعال رضئ عنہما یاللہ )) there came the noise (of wailing) from the house. Upon this Ibn

Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said (that is, he pointed out to Amr that he should stand and forbid them,

for), ‘I heard the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) as saying, ‘the dead is punished because


of the lamentation of his family. Abdullah made it general (what was said for a particular

occasion). Ibn Abbas (عنہ تعالی اللہ said, ‘when we were with the Commander of the (رضئ

believers, Umar bin Khattab (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), we reached Baida', and there was a man under the

shadow of the tree. He said to me, ‘go and inform me who is that person. So, I went and (found)

that he was Suhaib (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ). I returned to him and said, ‘you commanded me to find out

for you who that was, and he is Suhaib (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ). He (Umar عنہ یرضئ اللہ تعال ) said, ‘ask

him to see us’. I said, ‘he has family along with him. He said, ‘even if he has family along with

him. So, he (the narrator) told him to see (the commander of the believers and his party). When

we came (to Madina), it was before long that the commander of the believers was wounded, and

Suhaib (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) came weeping and crying: Alas for the brother, alas for the companion.

Upon this Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said, didn't you know, or didn't you hear, that the Apostle of

Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) said, ‘the dead is punished because of the lamentation of his family’?

Then Abdullah made it general and Umar (تعالی عنہ told it of certain occasions. So, I (رضئ اللہ

(Abdullah bin Abu Mulaika) stood up and went to Ummul Momineen A'isha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا)

and told her what Ibn Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) had said. Upon this she said: I swear by Allah that

Allah's Apostle (وسلم آله و عليه اللہ never said that dead would be punished because of his (صلى

family's lamenting (for him). What he said was that Allah would increase the punishment of the

unbeliever because of his family's lamenting for him. Verily it is Allah Who has caused laughter

and weeping. No bearer of a burden will bear another's burden. Ibn Abu Mulaika said that al-

Qasim bin Muhammad said that when the words of Umar and Ibn Umar ( عنہما ی رضئ اللہ تعال ) were

conveyed to Ummul Momineen A'isha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا), she said, ‘you have narrated it to me

from those who are neither liar nor those suspected of lying but (sometimes) hearing misleads.

بمكة قال بن عفان لعثمان لنشهدها توف يت ابنة بينهما -قال -فجئنا لجالس وإن ي -قال -فحضرها ابن عمر وابن عباس قال

بن عمر لعمرو بن عثم و مواجهه ألا تنهى عن البكاء فإن ان وه جلست إلى أحدهما ثم جاء الآخر فجلس إلى جنبي فقال عبد الل

صلى اللہ عليه وسلم قال فقال ابن عباس قد كان عمر يقول بعض ذلك ثم حدث . "إن المي ت ليعذب ببكاء أهله عليه "رسول الل

كب فنظرت مع عمر من مكة حتى إذا كنا بالبيداء إذا هو بركب تحت ظل شجرة فقال اذهب فان فقال صدرت ظر من هؤلاء الر

فقال ادعه لي -قال -فإذا هو صهيب إ .فأخبرته فالحق أمير المؤمنين قال فرجعت فقلت ارتحل صهيب ا أن أصيب .لى فلم

صلى اللہ عليه وسلم .عمر دخل صهيب يبكي يقول واأخاه واصاحباه إن "فقال عمر يا صهيب أتبكي على وقد قال رسول الل

ما . "المي ت يعذب ببعض بكاء أهله عليه عمر لا والل ا مات عمر ذكرت ذلك لعائشة فقالت يرحم الل حدث فقال ابن عباس فلم

صلى اللہ عليه وسلم "رسول الل ب المؤمن ببكاء أحد إن الل يزيد الكافر عذابا ببكاء أهله عليه " ولكن قال . " يعذ قال "إن الل

وزر أخرى }وقالت عائشة حسبكم القرآن أضحك وأبكى قال وقال ابن ع {ولا تزر وازرة ذلك والل قال ابن أبي .باس عند

ما قال ابن عمر من شىء .مليكة فوالل

Abdullah bin Abu Mulaika narrated that the daughter of Uthman bin Affan (عنہ تعالی اللہ (رضئ

died in Makka. We came to attend her (funeral). Ibn Umar and Ibn Abbas ( تعال عنہما یرضئ اللہ )

were also present there, and I was sitting between them. He added. ‘I (first sat) by the side of one

of them, then the other one came, and he sat by my side. Abdullah bin Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ)

said to Amr bin Uthman who was sitting opposite to him, ‘will you not prevent the people from

lamenting, for the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) had said, ‘the dead is punished because

of the lamenting of his family for him’? Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) then said that Umar ( رضئ


تعالی عنہ used to say something of that nature, and then narrated, ‘I proceeded from Makka (اللہ

along with 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) till we reached al-Baida' and there was a party of riders under

the shade of a tree. He said (to me), ‘go and find out who this party is. I cast a glance and there

was Suhaib (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) (in that party). So, I informed him (Umar عنہ یرضئ اللہ تعال ) about it.

He said, call him to me. So, I went back to Suhaib (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) and said, go and meet the

Commander of the believers. When Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) was wounded, Suhaib ( رضئ اللہ تعالی

said, ‘O (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) came wailing, ‘alas, for the brother! alas for the companion! Umar (عنہ

Suhaib (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), do you wail for me, whereas the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم)

said, ‘the dead would be punished on account of the lamentation of the (members of his

family)’? Ibn Abbas ( said, ‘when 'Umar died I made a mention of it to Ummul ( تعالی عنہرضئ اللہ

Momineen A'isha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا). She said, ‘may Allah have mercy upon Umar ( رضئ اللہ تعالی

وسلم) I swear by Allah that Allah's Apostle (عنہ آله و عليه اللہ never said that Allah would (صلى

punish the believer because of the weeping (of any one of the members of his family), but he

said that Allah would increase the punishment of the unbeliever because of the weeping of his

family over him. Ummul Momineen A'isha (عنہا تعالی اللہ said, ‘the Qur'an is enough for (رضئ

you (when it states) ولا تزر وازرة وزر أخرى [No bearer of burden will bear another's burden]. (Fatir

- 18). Thereupon Ibn Abbas (تعالی عنہ said, Allah is He Who has caused laughter and (رضئ اللہ

weeping. Ibn Abu Mulaika said, ‘by Allah, Ibn Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said nothing.


حمن بن بشر، حدثنا سفيان، قال عمرو عن ابن أبي مليكة، أم أبان بنت عثمان وساق الحديث ولم وحدثنا عبد الر كنا في جنازة

ه أيوب وابن جريج وحديثهم صلى اللہ عليه وسلم كما نص .ا أتم من حديث عمرو ينص رفع الحديث عن عمر عن النبي

Amr reported on the authority of Ibn Abu Mulaika, ‘we were with the bier of Umm Aban ( رضئ

and the rest of the Hadith is the same, but he ,(رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) daughter of Uthman ,(اللہ تعالی عنہا

did not narrate it as a marfu' Hadith on the authority of Umar ( تعالی عنہرضئ اللہ ) from the Apostle

of Allah (وسلم آله و عليه اللہ as it was narrated by Ayyub and Ibn Juraij, and the Hadith (صلى

narrated by them (Ayyub and Ibn Juraij) is more complete than that of Amr.

. " إن المي ت يعذب ببكاء الحى " عليه وسلم قال

Abdullah bin Umar (تعالی عنہ آله وسلم) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (رضئ اللہ (صلى اللہ عليه و

said, ‘the dead is punished because of the lamentation of the living.



وأبو بن هشام، اد، وحدثنا خلف ، جميعا عن حم هراني بيع الز زيد، -الر بن اد بن عروة، عن -قال خلف حدثنا حم عن هشام

حمن سمع شيئا فلم يحفظه إنما فقالت .أبيه، قال ذكر عند عائشة قول ابن عمر المي ت يعذب ببكاء أهله عليه أبا عبد الر رحم الل

وهم يبكون عليه فقال صلى اللہ عليه وسلم جنازة يهودي ت على رسول الل . " أنتم تبكون وإنه ليعذب " مر

Hisham bin 'Urwa narrated on the authority of his father that the saying of Ibn Umar ( رضئ اللہ

’that ‘the dead would be punished because of the lamentation of his family over him (تعالی عنہ

was mentioned to Ummul Momineen A'isha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا). Upon this she said, ‘may Allah

have mercy upon Abu Abdur Rahman (the kunya of Ibn 'Umar عنہ یرضئ اللہ تعال ) that he heard

something but could not retain it (well). (The fact is) that the bier of a Jew passed before the

Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) and (the members of his family) were wailing over him.

Upon this he said, ‘you are wailing, and he is being punished.


صلى اللہ عليه وسلم حدثنا أبو كريب، حدثنا أبو أسامة، عن هشام، عن أبيه، قال ذكر عند عائشة أن ابن "عمر، يرفع إلى النبي

صلى اللہ عليه وسلم . " يعذب في قبره ببكاء أهله عليه إن المي ت إنه ليعذب بخطيئته أو بذنبه "فقالت وهل إنما قال رسول الل

ليبكون عليه الآن قوله . " وإن أهله قتلى بدر من وذاك مثل وفيه بدر يوم القليب صلى اللہ عليه وسلم قام على إن رسول الل

ثم قرأت . " ما كنت أقول لهم حق إنهم ليعلمون أن "وقد وهل إنما قال . "إنهم ليسمعون ما أقول "المشركين فقال لهم ما قال

ءوا مقاعدهم من النار {وما أنت بمسمع من في القبور } {إنك لا تسمع الموتى } .يقول حين تبو

Hisham narrated on the authority of his father that it was mentioned to Ummul Momineen A'isha

عنہا) تعالی اللہ عنہ) that Ibn 'Umar (رضئ تعالی اللہ had narrated as marfu' Hadith from the (رضئ

Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) that the dead would be punished in the grave because of

the lamentation of his family for him. Upon this she said, Ibn 'Umar (تعالی عنہ missed (رضئ اللہ

(the point). The Apostle of Allah (r) had (in fact) said, he (the dead) is punished for his faults or

for his sins, and the members of his family are wailing for him now. (This misunderstanding of

Ibn Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) is similar to his saying), ‘the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم)

stood by the well in which were lying the dead bodies of those polytheists who had been killed

on the Day of Badr, and he said to them what he had to say, ie., ‘they hear what I say. But he

(Ibn 'Umar ) misunderstood. The Prophet (وسلم آله و عليه had only said, they (the dead) (صلى اللہ

understand that what I used to say to them was truth. She then recited - الموتى تسمع لا إنك

[Certainly, you cannot make the dead hear the call]. (An-Naml - 80), and - في من بمسمع أنت وما

He said, meaning, when .(Fater – 22) [nor can you make those hear who are in the graves] القبور

they had taken their seats in Hell.


.هشام بن عروة، بهذا الإسناد بمعنى حديث أبي أسامة وحديث أبي أسامة أتم وحدثناه أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة، حدثنا وكيع، حدثنا

This Hadith has been narrated by Ibn 'Urwa with the same chain of transmitters. However, the

Hadith narrated by Abu Usama is more complete.

. "ليبكون عليها وإنها لتعذب في قبرها

Amra daughter of Abdur Rahman narrated that she heard (from) Ummul Momineen A'isha

تعالی عنہا) and made a mention to her about Abdullah bin Umar as saying, ‘the dead is (رضئ اللہ

punished because of the lamentation of the living. Upon this Ummul Momineen A'isha ( رضئ اللہ

,said, ‘may Allah have mercy upon the father of Abdur Rahman. He did not tell a lie (تعالی عنہا

but he forgot or made a mistake. The Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) happened to pass by

a (dead) Jew woman who was being lamented. Upon this he said, ‘they weep over her and she is

being punished in the grave.

صلى اللہ عليه وسلم يقول بالكوف بن شعبة سمعت رسول الل من نيح عليه فإنه يعذب بما نيح " ة قرظة بن كعب فقال المغيرة

. " عليه يوم القيامة

Ali bin Rabi'a reported that the first one who was lamented upon in Kufa was Qaraza bin Ka'b.

Mughira bin Shu'ba (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said, ‘I heard the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم)

saying, ‘he who is lamented upon would be punished because of the lamentation for him on the

Day of judgment.

A similar Hadith has been narrated by Mughira bin Shu'ba (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) from the Apostle of

Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم).

This Hadith has been narrated from the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) through another

chain of transmitters.

Abu Malik al-Ash'ari narrated that the Apostle of Allah (وسلم آله و عليه اللہ said, ‘ in my (صلى

people there are four characteristics belonging to pre-Islamic period which they do not abandon,

boasting of high rank, reviling other peoples' genealogies, seeking rain by stars, and wailing.

And he (further) said, if the wailing woman does not repent before she dies, she will be made to

stand on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of pitch and a chemise of mange.

ة أن يذهب فينهاهن فذهب ثم أتاه اءهن فأمره أن يذهب فينهاهن فذهب فأتاه فذكر أنهن لم يطعنه فأمره الثاني نساء جعفر وذكر بك

لقد غلبننا يا رسول الل صلى اللہ عليه وسلم قال قالت فزعم .فقال والل اذهب فاحث في أفواههن من التراب " ت أن رسول الل

صلى اللہ عليه وسلم و . " ما تفعل ما أمرك رسول الل أنفك والل صلى اللہ عليه ما تركت ر قالت عائشة فقلت أرغم الل سول الل

.وسلم من العناء

Ummul Momineen A'isha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) narrated that when the Apostle of Allah ( صلى اللہ عليه

) was told that Ibn Haritha, Ja'far bin Abu Talib and Abdullah bin Rawaha (و آله وسلم یرضئ اللہ تعال

were killed, he sat down, showing signs of grief. She added, ‘I was looking (at him) through (عنہم

the crevice of the door. A man came to him and mentioned that Ja'far's women were lamenting.

He (the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) commanded him to go and forbid them (to do so). So, he went away but

came back and told (him) that they did not obey (him). He commanded him a second time to go

and forbid them (to do so). He again went but came back to him and said, ‘by Allah, they will

not listen to us, O Apostle of Allah ( صلى اللہ عليه و آله ) The Apostle of Allah ’.( عليه و آله وسلمصلى اللہ


,said (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said, ‘go and throw sand in their mouths’. Ummul Momineen Aisha (وسلم

‘I said, may Allah rub your nose in the dust, you did not do what the Apostle of Allah ( صلى اللہ

.commanded you, and you did not stop annoying the Apostle of Allah (عليه و آله وسلم

This Hadith has been narrated by Yahya bin Sa'id with the same chain of transmitters like one

narrated by Abd al-Aziz (with the change of these words), ‘you did not spare the Apostle of

Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) the botheration.’

Umm Atiyya (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) took a

promise from us along with the oath of Allegiance that we would not lament. But only five

among us fulfilled the promise (and they are) Umm Sulaim, and Umm al-'Ala', and the daughter

of Abu Sabra the wife of Mu'adh, or daughter of Abu Sabra and wife of Mu'adh ( یرضئ اللہ تعال

نہمع ).

Umm Atiyya (عنہا تعالی وسلم) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (رضئ اللہ آله و عليه took (صلى اللہ

pledge from us (including this promise) that we would not lament. Only five amongst us fulfilled

the promise, and one of them was Umm Sulaim (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا).

Ummul Momineen Hafsa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) narrated on the authority of Umm Atiyya ( رضئ اللہ

يبايعنك على أن لا - that she said, ‘when this verse was revealed (تعالی عنہا إذا جاءك المؤمنات أيها النبي يا

يف ببهتان يأتين ولا أولادهن يقتلن ولا يزنين ولا يسرقن ولا شيئا بالل في يشركن يعصينك ولا وأرجلهن أيديهن بين ترينه

إن الل لهن واستغفر فبايعهن رحيم معروف غفور الل [O' Prophet (وسلم آله و عليه when believing ,(صلى اللہ

women come to you and swear on oath that they will not associate anything with Allah, nor steal,

nor fornicate, nor kill their children, nor accuse others for what they have fabricated themselves,

nor disobey you in any rightful thing, then you should accept their allegiance, and ask

forgiveness of Allah for them. Certainly, Allah is Most Forgiving and Most Merciful]. (Al-

Mumtahana - 12), Umm Atiyya ( عنہا تعالی اللہ said, ‘in (this pledge) was also included (رضئ

wailing. I said, Apostle of Allah (وسلم آله و عليه اللہ except members of such a tribe who ,(صلى

helped me (in lamentation) during pre-Islamic days, there is left no alternative for me, but that I

should also help them. Upon this the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) said, (yes) but only

in case of the members of such a tribe.

CHAPTER (11)

باب نهى الن ساء عن ات باع الجنائز

Prohibition of women attending funerals

Umm Atiyya ( تعالی عنہارضئ اللہ ) narrated that they were forbidden to follow the bier, but it was

not made absolute on them.

Umm Atiyya (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) narrated that they were refrained from following the bier, but it

was not made absolute on them.


CHAPTER (12)

باب في غسل المي ت

Giving bath to the deceased


د بن سيرين، عن أم عطية، قالت دخل علينا النبي صلى اللہ وحدثنا يحيى بن يحيى، أخبرنا يزيد بن زريع، عن أيوب، عن محم

را فور واجعلن في الآخرة كااغسلنها ثلاثا أو خمسا أو أكثر من ذلك إن رأيتن ذلك بماء وسد " عليه وسلم ونحن نغسل ابنته فقال

ا فرغنا آذناه فألقى إلينا حقوه فقال . "أو شيئا من كافور فإذا فرغتن فآذنني . "أشعرنها إياه " فلم

Umm Atiyya (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) came to

us when we were bathing his daughter, and he told us, ‘wash her with water and (with the leaves

of) the lote tree, three or five times, or more than that if you think fit, and put camphor or

something like camphor in the last washing; then inform me when you have finished. So, when

we had finished, we informed him, and he gave to us his waist wrapper saying, wrap her in it.

Umm Atiyya (عنہا تعالی اللہ صلى الله عليه وسلم narrated that they braided her (the daughter of the Prophet (رضئ

after giving bath to her dead body) hair in three plaits.

Umm Atiyya (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) narrated that one of the daughters of the Apostle of Allah ( صلى

died. And in the Hadith transmitted by Ibn 'Ulayya (the words are). ‘the Apostle (اللہ عليه و آله وسلم

of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) came to us and we were washing his daughter. And in the Hadith

transmitted by Malik (the words are), ‘there came in the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم)

when his daughter died. The rest of the Hadith is the same as narrated by Yazid b. Zurai' from

Ayyub from Muhammad from Umm Atiyya (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا).

A similar Hadith has been transmitted by Ummul Momineen Hafsa (عنہا تعالی اللہ on the (رضئ

authority of Umm Atiyya (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) with the exception (of these words that the Prophet

asked them to give bath to her dead body), ‘three times, five times, seven times, or more than

that, if you deem fit. Ummul Momineen Hafsa (عنہا تعالی اللہ said from Umm (further) (رضئ

Atiyya, ‘we braided (the hair) of her head in three plaits.


خمسا أو علية، وأخبرنا أيوب، قال وقالت حفصة عن أم عطية، قالت اغسلنها وترا ثلاثا أو وحدثنا يحيى بن أيوب، حدثنا ابن

Umm Atiyya (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) narrated, ‘we washed her an odd number of times, three, five or

seven times; and Umm Atiyya (عنہا تعالی اللہ said, ‘we braided her hair in three (further) (رضئ

plaits.

Umm 'Atiyya (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) narrated that when Zainab (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا), the daughter of the

Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) died, he said to us, ‘wash her odd number of times, three

or five times, and put camphor or something like camphor at the fifth time, and after you have

washed her inform me. So, we informed him and he gave us his waist wrapper to cover her body.

Umm 'Atiyya (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) narrated that ‘there came to us the Apostle of Allah ( صلى اللہ عليه

آله وسلم as we were washing one of his daughters. So, he said, ‘wash her (dead body) an odd (و


number of times, five times or more than that, the rest of the Hadith is the same. She (further)

said, ‘we braided her hair in three plaits: (two) on the sides of her head and one on her forehead.

Umm 'Atiyya (تعالی عنہا آله وسلم) narrated that when the Apostle of Allah (رضئ اللہ (صلى اللہ عليه و

asked her to wash his daughter, he told her to start from the right side, and with those parts of the

body over which Wudu' is performed.

Umm Atiyya (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) said to them (the

women) in regard to the washing of his daughter to start from the right side and with those parts

of the body over which Wudu' is performed.

CHAPTER (13)

باب في كفن المي ت

Shrouding the deceased

صلى اللہ عليه -اوية، وقال الآخرون، حدثنا أبو مع ، قال هاجرنا مع رسول الل عن الأعمش، عن شقيق، عن خباب بن الأرت

فمنا من مضى لم يأكل من أج فوجب أجرنا على الل نبتغي وجه الل قتل يوم .شيئا منهم مصعب بن عمير ره وسلم في سبيل الل

. ه وإذا وضعناها على رجليه خرج رأسه أحد فلم يوجد له شىء يكفن فيه إلا نمرة فكنا إذا وضعناها على رأسه خرجت رجلا

صلى اللہ عليه وسلم فقال رس رجليه الإذخر " ول الل رأسه واجعلوا على يلي ا له ثمرته فهو . "ضعوها مم أينعت ومنا من

.يهدبها

Khabbab al-Aratt (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that they migrated with the Apostle of Allah ( صلى اللہ

in the path of Allah seeking Allah's favor alone. Thus, our reward was assured with (عليه و آله وسلم

Allah. And amongst us were those who spent life (in such a state of piety and austerity) that


nothing consumed their reward. Mus'ab bin Umair (تعالی عنہ was one of them. He was (رضئ اللہ

killed on the Day of Uhud, and nothing but a woollen cloak was found to shroud him. When we

covered his head with it, his feet became uncovered, and when we covered his feet, his head was

uncovered. Upon this the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) said, ‘place it (this cloak) on the

side of his head and cover his feet with grass. And there is one amongst us for whom the fruit is

ripened and he enjoys it.

A similar Hadith has been narrated by 'Uyaina on the authority of A'mash with the same chain of

transmitters.

.فباعها وتصدق بثمنها

Ummul Momineen A'isha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) narrated that the Apostle of Allah ( صلى اللہ عليه و آله

was shrouded in three cotton garments of white Yamani stuff from Sahul, among which (وسلم

was neither a shirt nor a turban; and so far as Hullah (upper and lower wrap of the same cloth) is

concerned there was some doubt about it in the minds of people, that it was brought for him in

order to shroud him with it, but it was abandoned, and he was shrouded in three cotton garments

of white Yamani stuff from Sahul. Then Abdullah bin Abu Bakr (عنہ تعالی اللہ got it and (رضئ

said, ‘I would keep it in order to shroud myself in it. He then said, if Allah, the Exalted and

Majestic, would have desired it for His Apostle (وسلم آله و عليه اللہ he would have been ,(صلى

shrouded with it’. So, he sold it and gave its price in charity.

بن أبي بكر ثم نزعت عنه وكف ن في ثلاثة أثواب سحول يمانية ليس فيها عمامة صلى اللہ عليه وسلم في حلة يمنية كانت لعبد الل

الحلة فقال أكفن فيها صلى اللہ .ولا قميص فرفع عبد الل فتصدق بها . عليه وسلم وأكفن فيها ثم قال لم يكفن فيها رسول الل

then it was removed from him, and he was shrouded in three cotton sheets of white ;(تعالی عنہ

Yamani stuff from Sahul among which was neither a shirt nor a turban. Abdullah ( رضئ اللہ تعالی

took up the Hullah (upper and lower wrap of the same cloth) and said, I would be shrouded (عنہ

in it, but then said, ‘how is it that I should be shrouded in it in which the Apostle of Allah ( صلى

.was not shrouded! So, he gave it in charity (اللہ عليه و آله وسلم

This Hadith is narrated on the authority of Hisham with the same chain of transmitters, but in the

Hadith narrated by him there is no mention of the story of Abdullah bin Abu Bakr ( رضئ اللہ تعالی

Abu Salama narrated that he asked Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) with how many

garments the Apostle of Allah (وسلم آله و عليه اللہ was shrouded. She said, ‘with three (صلى

garments of Sahul.

CHAPTER (14)

باب تسجية المي ت

Covering the deceased

Ummul Momineen A'isha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) narrated that when the Apostle of Allah ( صلى اللہ عليه

This Hadith has been narrated by Zuhri with the same chain of transmitters.

CHAPTER (15)

باب في تحسين كفن المي ت

Shrouding the deceased well

جل بالليل حتى يصلى عليه إلا أن يضطر إن ن إلى ذلك وقال النبي صلى اللہ عليه سافزجر النبي صلى اللہ عليه وسلم أن يقبر الر

ن كفنه " وسلم . "إذا كفن أحدكم أخاه فليحس

Jabir bin Abdullah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم), one

day in the course of his sermon made mention of a person among his companions who had died

and had been wrapped in a shroud not long (enough to cover his whole body) and was buried

during the night. The Apostle of Allah (آله وسلم reprimanded (the audience) that a (صلى اللہ عليه و

person was buried during the night (in a state that) funeral prayer could not be offered (by the

Apostle of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم). (And this is permissible only) when it becomes a dire necessity for a man.

The Apostle of Allah ( ه و آله وسلمصلى اللہ علي ) also said, ‘when any one of you shrouds his brother,

he should shroud him well.

CHAPTER (16)

‘make haste at a funeral. If the dead person was good, it is a good state to which you are sending

him to; but if he was otherwise, it is an evil of which you are ridding yourselves.

This Hadith has been narrated by another chain of transmitters except with this variation (of

words) that in the Hadith narrated by Ma'mar (the words are), ‘ I do not know whether the Hadith

is marfu'.

‘hasten at a funeral, for if (the dead person) is good, you would (soon) bring him close to the

good. And if it is otherwise, it is an evil of which you are ridding yourselves off.

CHAPTER (17)

باب فضل الصلاة على الجنازة وات باعها

The virtue of offering the funeral prayer and following the bier

Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) said, ‘he

who attends the funeral till the prayer is offered for (the dead), for him is the reward of one qirat,

and he who attends (and stays) till he is buried, for him is the reward of two qirats. It was asked,

what are the qirats? He said, ‘they are equivalent to two huge mountains. Two other narrators

added, ‘Ibn Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) used to pray and then depart (without waiting for the burial

of the dead). When the tradition of Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) reached him, he said, ‘we have

lost many qirats’.

This Hadith has been narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) through another

chain of narrators up to these words, ‘two great mountains’. No mention is made of what

followed (these words); and in the Hadith transmitted by 'Abdul A'la (the words are), ‘till (the

burial) is complete’. In the Hadith transmitted by 'Abdur Razzaq (the words are), ‘till he is

placed in the grave’.

This Hadith is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) through another chain

who offered prayer over the dead, but did not follow the bier, for him is the reward of one qirat,

and he who followed it, for him is the reward of two qirats. It was asked what the qirats were. He

said, ‘the smaller amongst the two is equivalent to Uhud’.

Nafi' narrated that it was said to Ibn Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ)

reported to have heard Allah's Apostle (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) as saying, ‘he who follows the bier,

for him is the reward of one qirat. Ibn Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said, Abu Huraira ( رضئ اللہ تعالی

رضئ اللہ تعالی ) narrated it too often. So, he sent (a messenger to) Ummul Momineen A'isha (عنہ

رضئ اللہ ) testified Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) to ascertain (the fact). Ummul Momineen (عنہا

.said, ‘we missed so many qirat (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) Ibn Umar .(تعالی عنہ

who offers prayer for the dead, for him is (the reward of) one qirat; and he who follows the bier

till it is placed in the grave, for him (is the reward of) two qirats. I (Abu Hazim, one of the

narrators) said, Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), what is a qirat? He said, it is like the hill of Uhud.

Dawud bin Amir bin Sa'd bin Abu Waqqas reported on the authority of his father that while he

was sitting along with Abdullah bin Umar (تعالی عنہ ,Khabbab, the owner of Maqsura ,(رضئ اللہ

said, Ibn Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), do you hear what Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) says that he


heard the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) say, ‘he who goes out with the bier when taken

out from its residence and offers prayer for it and then follows it till it is buried, he would have

two qirats of reward, each qirat being equivalent to Uhud; and he who, after having offered

prayer, (directly) came back would have his reward (as great) as Uhud’? Ibn Umar ( رضئ اللہ تعالی

) sent Khabbab to Ummul Momineen A'isha (عنہ نہارضئ اللہ تعالی ع ) in order to ask her about the

words of Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) (and also told him) to come back and inform him what

Ummul Momineen A'isha (عنہا تعالی تعالی ) said. (In the meanwhile) Ibn Umar (رضئ اللہ رضئ اللہ

took up a handful of pebbles and turned them over in his hand till Khabbab came back to (عنہ

him and told (him) that Ummul Momineen A'isha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) testified (the statement of)

Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ). Ibn Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) threw the pebbles he had in his hand

on the ground and then said, ‘we missed a large number of qirats’.

Thauban (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), the freed slave of the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) reported

Allah's Apostle (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) as saying, ‘he who offered prayer for the dead, for him is

the reward of one qirat, and he who attended its burial, he would have two qirats as his reward.

And qirat is equivalent to Uhud’.

And in the Hadith transmitted by Sa'id and Hisham, (the words are), ‘the Apostle of Allah ( صلى

.’was asked about qirat, and he said, it is equivalent to Uhud (اللہ عليه و آله وسلم

CHAPTER (18)

If one hundred (people) pray for a person, they will intercede for him

said, ‘if a company of Muslims numbering one hundred pray over a dead person, all of (وسلم

them interceding for him, their intercession for him will be accepted.

CHAPTER (19)

ف عوا فيه باب من صلى عليه أربعون ش

If forty people pray for a person, they will intercede for him

صلى اللہ .أربعون قال نعم ما من رجل مسلم يموت فيقوم على جنازته " عليه وسلم يقول قال أخرجوه فإن ي سمعت رسول الل

فيه شفعهم الل شيئا إلا بالل يشركون رواية ابن معروف عن شريك بن أبي نمر عن كري . " أربعون رجلا لا ب عن ابن وفي

.عباس

Abdullah bin Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that his son died in Qudaid or 'Usfan. He said to

Kuraib to see as to how many people had gathered there for his (funeral). Kuraib said, so, I went

out and I informed him about the people who had gathered there. Ibn 'Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ)

said, ‘do you think they are forty? Kuraib said, ‘yes’. Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) then said to

them, bring him (the dead body) out for I have heard Allah's Apostle (آله وسلم عليه و as (صلى اللہ

saying, ‘if any Muslim dies and forty men who associate nothing with Allah stand for his prayer,

Allah will accept them as intercessors for him.

CHAPTER (20)

باب فيمن يثنى عليه خير أو شر من الموتى

The deceased who is spoken well of and the one who is spoken badly of

Anas bin Malik (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that there passed a bier (being carried by people) and

it was lauded in good terms. Upon this the Apostle of Allah (آله وسلم said, ‘it has (صلى اللہ عليه و

become certain, it has become certain, it has become certain. And there passed a bier and it was

condemned in bad words. Upon this the Apostle of Allah (وسلم آله و عليه اللہ said, it has (صلى

become certain, it has become certain, it has become certain. Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said, ‘may

my father and mother be ransom for you, there passed a bier and it was praised in good terms,

he whom you praised in good terms, Paradise has become certain for him, and he whom you

condemned in bad words, Hell has become certain for him. You are Allah's witnesses in the

earth, you are Allah's witnesses in the earth, you are Allah's witnesses in the earth.

Qatada bin Rib'i (عنہ تعالی اللہ وسلم) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (رضئ آله و عليه اللہ ,(صلى

whenever a bier passed before him, said, ‘he is the one to find relief and the one with (the

departure of him) other will find relief. They said, Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم), who is

al-Mustarih and al-Mustarah? Upon this he said: The believing servant finds relief from the

troubles of the world, and in the death of a wicked person, the people, towns, trees and animals

find relief.

In the Hadith transmitted by Yahya bin Sa'id on the authority of Qatada (تعالی عنہ the) (رضئ اللہ

words are), (The believing servant) finds relief from the troubles of the world and its hardships

and (gets into) the Mercy of Allah.

CHAPTER (22)

باب في التكبير على الجنازة

Saying the takbir over the deceased


صلى اللہ عليه حدثنا يحيى بن يحيى، قال قرأت على مالك عن ابن شهاب، عن سعيد بن المسيب، عن أبي هريرة، أن رسول الل

Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) gave the

people news of the death of Negus (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) on the day he died, and he took them out to

the place of prayer and observed four takbirs.

Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) gave us

the news of the death of Negus (تعالی عنہ the ruler of Abyssinia, on the day when he ,(رضئ اللہ

died, and he said (to us), seek pardon for your brother. Ibn Shihab said that Sa'id bin Musayyib

had told that Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) had narrated to him that the Apostle of Allah ( صلى اللہ

وسلم آله و drew them up in a row in a place of prayer, and offered prayer and recited four (عليه

takbirs for him.

said, ‘there died today the pious servant of Allah, Ashama (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ). So, he stood up and

led us in (funeral prayer) over him.

'Imran bin Husain (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) said,

‘ a brother of yours has died; so stand up and offer prayer for Negus (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ). And in

the Hadith transmitted by Zubair (the words are), ‘your brother’.

CHAPTER (23)

Praying over the grave

Sha'bi narrated that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) observed prayer over a grave after

the dead was buried and he recited four takbirs over him. Shaibani said, ‘I said to Sha'bi, ‘who

narrated it to you? He said, an authentic one, Abdullah bin Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ). This is the

word of a Hasan hadith. In the narration of Ibn Numair (the words are), The Apostle of Allah

went to the grave which had been newly prepared and prayed over it, and (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم)


they also prayed who were behind him and he recited four takbirs. I said to Amir, ‘who narrated

it to you’? He said, an authentic one who saw him, Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ).

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that a dark-complexioned woman

(or a youth) used to sweep the mosque. The Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) missed her


(or him) and inquired about her (or him). The people told him that she (or he) had died. He asked

why they did not inform him, and it appears as if they had treated her (or him) or her (or his)

affairs as of little account. He (the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, ‘lead me to her (or his) grave. They led him

to that place, and he offered prayer over her (or him) and then remarked, ‘verily, these graves are

full of darkness for their dwellers. Verily, the Mighty and Glorious Allah illuminates them for

their occupants by reason of my prayer over them.

It is narrated on the authority of Abdur Rahman bin Abu Laila that Zaid used to recite four

takbirs on our funerals and he recited five takbirs on one funeral. I asked him the reason (for this

variation), to which he replied, ‘the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) recited thus.

CHAPTER (24)

باب القيام للجنازة

Standing for the funerals

said, ‘should any one of you come across a funeral procession, and if he does not intend (آله وسلم


to accompany it, he must stand up until it passes by him or is placed upon the ground before it

passes him.

intend to follow it.

It is narrated on the authority of Jabir Ibn Abdullah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that there passed a bier and

the Prophet (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) stood up for it and we also stood up along with him. We said,

‘Apostle of Allah (وسلم آله و عليه اللہ that was the bier of a Jew woman. Upon this he ,(صلى


remarked, ‘verily, death is a matter of consternation, so whenever you come across a bier stand

up.

It is narrated on the authority of Ibn Abu Laila that while Qais bin Sa'd and Sahl bin Hunaif

( عنہما یرضئ اللہ تعال ) were both in Qadisiyya a bier passed by them and they both stood up. They

were told that it was the bier of one of the people of the land (non-Muslim). They said that a bier

passed before the Prophet (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) and he stood up. He was told that he (the dead

man) was a Jew. Upon this he remarked, ‘was he not a human being or did he not have a soul?

And in the Hadith narrated by Amr bin Murra with the same chain of transmitters, (the words)

are, ‘there passed a bier before us’.

CHAPTER (25)

It was narrated that Waqid bin Amr bin Sa'd bin Mu'adh said, ‘Nafi' bin Jubair saw me and we

were standing for a bier, while he was sitting and waiting for the bier to be placed on the ground.

He said to me, ‘what makes you keep standing’? I said, ‘I am waiting for the bier to be placed on

the ground (and I am acting) as per the Hadith narrated to me by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri ( رضئ اللہ

عنہ Upon this Nafi' said, ‘verily, Mas'ud bin Hakam reported to me on the authority of .(تعالی

Hadrat 'Ali bin Abu Talib (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Prophet (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) stood up first

(for a bier) and then sat down.

Mas'ud bin al-Hakam al-Ansari informed Nafi' that he had heard Hadrat Ali bin Abu Talib ( رضئ

used to stand first but later (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) about the biers, ‘verily, the Prophet (اللہ تعالی عنہ

on kept sitting; but it is also narrated that Nafi ibn Jubair saw Waqid bin Amr standing for a bier

till it was placed down.

al-Hakam who narrated it on the authority of Hadrat Ali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that he said, ‘we saw

the Prophet (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) stood up for a (bier) and we also stood up; he sat down and we

too sat down.

Supplicating for the deceased during the (funeral) prayer

faults as You would cleanse a white garment from impurity. Requite him with an abode more

excellent than his abode, with a family better than his family, and with a mate better than his

mate. Admit him to the Garden and protect him from the torment of the grave and the torment of

the Fire]. Auf bin Malik (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said, ‘I earnestly desired that I were this dead body’.

Anas bin Malik (تعالی عنہ آله وسلم) narrated that he heard the Prophet (رضئ اللہ say (صلى اللہ عليه و

وأبدله واغ من الدنس ينقى الثوب الأبيض ونق ه من الخطايا كما وبرد بماء وثلج خيرا من داره وأهلا خيرا من أهله سله دارا

ار وزوجا خيرا من زوجه وقه فتنة القبر وعذاب الن [ O Allah! forgive him, have mercy upon him. Give him

peace and absolve him. Receive him with honor and make his grave spacious. Wash him with

water, snow and hail, cleanse him from faults as is cleaned a white garment from impurity.

Requite him with an abode more excellent than his abode, with a family better than his family,

and with a mate better than his mate, and save him from the trial of the grave and torment of

Hell]. Auf bin Malik (تعالی عنہ said, ‘I earnestly desired that I were the dead person to (رضئ اللہ

CHAPTER (27)

Samura bin Jundub (عنہ تعالی اللہ narrated that he prayed (Salah al-Janaza) behind the (رضئ

Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) and he prayed for a woman who had died in the state of

delivery. He stood in front of her waist.

Samura bin Jundub (تعالی عنہ narrated that he was a young boy during the time of the (رضئ اللہ

Prophet (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) and I retained in my mind (what I learnt from him), and nothing

restrained me from speaking except the fact that there were persons far more advanced in age

than I. Verily, I prayed (salat al-Janaza) behind the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) over a

woman who had died in the state of delivery and the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) stood

up to in front of the middle part of her body for the prayer. And in the tradition narrated on the

authority of Ibn Muthanna the words are, ‘the Prophet (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) stood in the middle

part of her body for offering prayer for her’.

CHAPTER (28)

باب ركوب المصل ي على الجنازة إذا انصرف

It is reported on the authority of Jabir Ibn Samura (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that an unsaddled horse was

brought to the Prophet (وسلم آله و عليه and he rode on it when he returned after having (صلى اللہ

offered the funeral prayer of Ibn Dahdah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) and we walked on foot around him.

Jabir Ibn Samura (تعالی عنہ narrated that the Apostle of Allah prayed funeral prayer on (رضئ اللہ

Ibn Dahdah ( تعالی عنہرضئ اللہ ), then an unsaddled horse was brought to him and a person hobbled

it, and the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) rode upon it and it bounded and we followed it

and ran after it. One of the people said that the Prophet (آله وسلم و عليه remarked: How (صلى اللہ

many among hanging bunches in the Paradise are meant for Ibn Dahdah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ)?

CHAPTER (29)

The Lahd (Niche), and setting up bricks over the deceased

Amir bin Sa'd bin Abu Waqqas told that Sa'd bin Abu Waqqas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said during his

illness of which he died. ‘make a niche for me in the side of the grave and set up bricks over me

as was done in case of Allah's Apostle (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم).

CHAPTER (30)

باب جعل القطيفة في القبر

Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said that a piece of red stuff was put in the grave of Allah's Apostle

CHAPTER (31)

باب الأمر بتسوية القبر

The command to level the grave

Thumama bin Shafayy narrated that when they were with Fadala bin Ubaid (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) in

the country of the Romans at a place (known as) Rudis, a friend of ours died. Fadala bin Ubaid

ordered to prepare a grave for him and then it was levelled; and then he said, ‘I (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ)

heard the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) commanding (us) to level the grave (in a hostile

territory).

Abul Hayyaj al-Asadi narrated that Ali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) told him, ‘should I not send you on the

same mission as Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه وسلم) sent me? Do not leave an image (of idols) without

obliterating it, or a high grave (of unbelievers) without levelling it. This Hadith has been reported

by Habib with the same chain of transmitters and he said, ‘(do not leave) a picture (of idols)

without obliterating it.


CHAPTER (32)

باب النهى عن تجصيص القبر، والبناء، عليه

The prohibition of plastering graves or erecting structures over them

Jabir (عنہ تعالی اللہ narrated that the Apostle of Allah forbade that the graves should be (رضئ

plastered (the way Christians/Jews do) or they be used as sitting places (for the people), or a

building should be built over them (like done by Christians and Jews).

CHAPTER (33)

Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) said, ‘it is

better that one of you should sit on live coals which would burn his clothing and come in contact

with his skin than that he should sit on a grave’.

Abbad bin Abdullah bin Zubair narrated that Ummul Momineen Aisha (عنہا تعالی اللہ (رضئ

ordered the bier of Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) to be brought into the mosque so that

she should pray for him. The people disapproved this (act) of hers. She said, ‘how soon the

people have forgotten that the Apostle of Allah (وسلم آله و عليه اللہ offered not the funeral (صلى

prayer of Suhail bin al-Baida (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) but in a mosque.

Abbad bin Abdullah bin Zubair narrated on the authority of Ummul Momineen A'isha ( رضئ اللہ

عنہا عنہ) that when Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (تعالی تعالی اللہ died, the wives of the Apostle of (رضئ

Allah (آله وسلم sent message to bring his bier into the mosque so that they should (صلى اللہ عليه و

offer prayer for him. They (the participants of the funeral) did accordingly, and it was placed in

front of their apartments and they offered prayer for him. It was brought out of the door (known

as) Bab al-Jana'iz which was towards the side of Maqa'id, and the news reached them (the wives

of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) that the people bad criticized this (offering of funeral prayer in the mosque)

saying that it was not desirable to take the bier inside the mosque. This was conveyed to Ummul

Momineen A'isha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا). She said, ‘how hastily the people criticize that about which

they know little. They criticize us for carrying the bier in the mosque. The Apostle of Allah ( صلى

آله وسلم تعالی عنہ) offered not the funeral prayer of Suhail bin Baida (اللہ عليه و but in the (رضئ اللہ

innermost part of the mosque.

Abu Salama bin Abdur Rahman narrated on the authority of Ummul Momineen A'isha ( رضئ اللہ

died she said, bring it (the bier) into (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that when Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (تعالی عنہا

the mosque so that I offer prayer for him. But, this act of hers was criticized by some people. She

said, ‘by Allah, the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) offered prayer in the mosque for the

two sons of Baida (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ); Suhail and his brother.

CHAPTER (35)

باب ما يقال عند دخول القبور والدعاء لأهلها

What is to be said when entering the graveyard and

supplicating for its occupants

Ummul Momineen A'isha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) narrated that whenever the Prophet ( صلى اللہ عليه و آله

was with her in the apartment, he would go out towards the end of the night to al-Baqi' and (وسلم

say, ‘peace be upon you, abode of a people who are believers. What you were promised would

come to you tomorrow, you receive it after some delay; and Allah willing we shall join you. O

Allah, grant forgiveness to the inhabitants of Baqi al-Gharqad. Qutaiba did not mention the

words, ‘would come to you’.

Muhammad bin Qais (عنہ تعالی اللہ said (to the people), ‘should I not narrate to you (a (رضئ

Hadith) on my authority and on the authority of my mother? We thought that he meant the

mother who had given him birth. He then said that it was Ummul Momineen A'isha ( رضئ اللہ تعالی

who had narrated this, saying, ‘should I not narrate to you about myself and about the (عنہا

Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم)? We said, ‘yes. She said, ‘when it was my turn for Allah's

Apostle (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) to spend the night with me, he turned his side, put on his mantle

and took off his shoes and placed them near his feet, and spread the corner of his shawl on his

bed and then lay down till he thought that I had gone to sleep. He took hold of his mantle slowly

and put on the shoes slowly and opened the door and went out and then closed it lightly. I

covered my head, put on my veil and tightened my waist wrapper, and then went out following

his steps till he reached Baqi. He stood there and he stood for a long time. He then lifted his

hands three times, and then returned and I also returned. He hastened his steps and I also

hastened my steps. He ran and I too ran. He came (to the house) and I also came (to the house). I,

however, preceded him and I entered (the house), and as I lay down in the bed, he (the Prophet

entered the (house), and said, ‘why is it, O A'isha, that you are out of breath? I said, ‘there is (صلى الله عليه وسلم

nothing. He said, ‘tell me or the Subtle and the Aware (Allah) would inform me. I said, ‘Apostle

of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم), may my father and mother be ransom for you, and then I told him

(the whole story). He said, ‘was it the darkness (of your shadow) that I saw in front of me? I said,

‘yes. He gave me a nudge on the chest which I felt, and then said, ‘did you think that Allah and

His Apostle (وسلم آله و عليه اللہ would deal unjustly with you? She said, ‘whatsoever the (صلى

people conceal, Allah will know it. He said, Jibreel (عليه السلام) came to me when you saw me. He

called me and he concealed it from you. I responded to his call, but I too concealed it from you

(for he did not come to you), as you were not fully dressed. I thought that you had gone to sleep,

and I did not like to awaken you, fearing that you may be frightened. He (Jibreel عليه السلام) said,

‘your Lord has commanded you to go to the inhabitants of Baqi and beg pardon for them. I said,

Apostle of Allah, how should I pray for them? He said, ‘say, Peace be upon the inhabitants of

this city (graveyard) from among the Believers and the Muslims, and may Allah have mercy on

those who have gone ahead of us, and those who come later on, and we shall, Allah willing, join

you.

Sulaiman bin Buraida (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated on the authority of his father that the Apostle of

Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) used to teach them when they went out to the graveyard. One of the

narrators used to say this in the narration transmitted on the authority of Abu Bakr ( رضئ اللہ تعالی

الد يار (عنہ أهل على Peace be upon the inhabitants of the city. In the Hadith transmitted by] السلام

Zuhair (the words are) أهل عليكم ولكم السلام لنا الل أسأل للاحقون الل شاء إن وإنا والمسلمين المؤمنين من الد يار

Peace be upon you, the inhabitants of the city, among the believers, and Muslims, and] العافية

Allah willing we shall join you. I beg of Allah peace for us and for you].

CHAPTER (36)

ه باب استئذان النبي صلى اللہ عليه وسلم ربه عز وجل في زيارة قبر أم

The prophet (saws) asked his Lord for permission to visit the grave

of his mother

Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) said, ‘I

sought permission to beg forgiveness for my mother, but it was not granted (since there was no

need for it as she is the pious mother of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, already under the His mercy and

protection). (Then) I sought permission to visit her grave which was granted (encouragingly).

Explanation

Thus, the correct understanding of the above Hadith is, when Prophet ( آله و عليه الله صلى

ل ع) wanted to ask for forgiveness for his mother, Allah (وسلم ج does not grant it because she (ز و

is the virtuous mother of the seal of Prophet-hood, and one among the best of women among

human beings, who has been rewarded plentiful bounties in Hereafter. Therefore, there is no

need to ask for her forgiveness. Forgiveness is requested for a normal human being whose

salvation is under scrutiny.


As far as the permission to visit her grave is concerned, this is granted to the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه

because visiting the graves of Prophets, Sahabah and Muslimeen is a virtuous deed in (و آله وسلم

Islam.

Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم) visited the

grave of his mother and he wept, and moved others around him to tears, and said, I sought

permission from my Lord to beg forgiveness for her but it was not granted (since there was no

need for it as she is the pious mother of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, already under the His mercy and

protection). (Then) I sought permission to visit her grave which was granted (encouragingly).

Therefore, visit the graves, for that makes you mindful of death.

Ibn Buraida narrated on the authority of his father that the Apostle of Allah (صلى اللہ عليه و آله وسلم)

said, ‘I forbade you to visit graves, but you may now visit them. I forbade you to eat the flesh of

sacrificial animals after three days, but you way now keep it as along as you feel inclined. I
