Urban Art Fair et l’ambassade de Singapour présentent Urban Art Singapore. Cette exposition s’inscrit dans la continuité d’une collaboration déjà établie depuis avril 2017 et l’inauguration en France de l’exposition « Cannot be Bo(a)rdered ». Aujourd’hui, nous avons souhaité montrer la culture urbaine de l’ar-chipel plus profondément. Graffiti, installations, photos, danse, musique, réalité virtuelle, mapping, fooding, sculpture et autres médiums viendront célébrer la diversité foisonnante de la création pluridisciplinaire singapourienne.

Plus qu’une exposition, Urban Art Singapore sera une destination pour le public comme pour Urban Art Fair, qui pose ici une nouvelle pierre dans la construction d’un projet ; celui de vivre une aventure hors des sentiers battus et d’explorer, celui d’organiser Urban Art Fair | Singapore 2020, sur l’archipel.

Nouveau foyer pour la création mais aussi marché émergent et passionnant, Singapour ouvre ses horizons et nous permet de capter une partie de son parfum urbain.

Urban Art Fair and the Embassy of Singapore presents Urban Art Singapore. This exhibition is a continuation of a collaboration already established since April 2017, with the French inauguration of the exhibition "Cannot be Bo(a)rdered". Today, we wanted to show Singapore's urban culture more deeply. Graffiti, installations, photos, dance, music, virtual reality, mapping, gastronomy, sculpture and other mediums will celebrate the diversity of Singaporean multidisciplinary creation.

More than an exhibition, Urban Art Singapore will be a destination for the public as well as for Urban Art Fair, which lays a foundation stone for a project; the kind of project which allow us to experience an adventure, explore, and organize Urban Art Fair | Singapore 2020 on the archipelago.

New home for creation but also emerging and fascinating market, Singapore opens its horizons and allows us to capture a part of its urban flavor.

Commissaire d’exposition et artiste basé à Singapour, travaillant notamment pour le Musée National de Singapour, Iman Ismail a conçu l’exposition « C(Hope) » autour du thème de la possession et de l’appartenance à un territoire. Inspiré du mot « Chope » en singapourien, ce terme familier signifie l’acte de réserver, de s’attribuer la propriété d’un certain objet ou d’une certaine idée. L’anticipation, l’espoir, le sentiment de propriété, de possession et de territoire sont des exemples des nombreuses émotions impliquées dans la démarche « Chope ». Iman Ismail propose de faire résonner cet acte avec l’appropriation de l’espace public et des éléments du quotidien par une sélection d’artistes urbains contemporains locaux.13 artistes sont présentés à travers ce prisme qui nous emmène à la découverte d’une effervescence culturelle et urbaine qui dépasse les frontières.

Exhibition curator and artist based in Singapore, Iman Ismail created the “C(Hope)” exhibition around the theme of possession and belonging to a territory. Inspired by the word “Chope” in singapourean language, this singular term means the act to book, to take credit the property of an object or an idea. The anticipation, the hope, the feeling of ownership, of possession and of territory are some examples of many feelings involved in the process “Chope”. Iman Ismail proposes to make this act resonate with the appropriation of the public space and everyday elements by a selection of local urban artists.13 artists are presented through this prism that takes us to the discovery of a cultural and urban effervescence that transcends the urban culture and borders.

Depuis 2012, Clog Two et Ink Ten forment un duo d’artistes urbains s’étant illustré sur la scène internationale avec des fresques monumentales réalisées au Royaume-Uni, au Japon, en Corée du Sud, en Australie ou encore au Mexique.À mi-chemin entre arts visuels et arts numériques, leur style, appelé « Geo Graffiti », s’articule autour de motifs géométriques qui s'entrelacent et se connectent selon des calculs prédéfinis, pour donner un rendu figuratif mettant en valeur l'environnement dans lequel ils peignent. Ils ont notamment travaillé avec des marques telles que Mercedes Benz, Google, Microsoft, Apple, Converse, Billabong et MightyJaxx.

Clog Two is a Graffiti practitioner and visual engineer, who explores numerous medium that transcends from spray paints to digital media. His body of works focus on intricate mechanical designs and components, merging them into a style he calls, the "MechaSoul". The "MechaSoul" revolves around the ideology between the psychological bond between mankind and technology. Clog Two, with his partner Inkten, also founded The Ink and Clog, the first visual art duo collective, and Utama.Co, an urban art supplies store. Through two decades, his obsession towards creating has taken him onto internationally level in Japan, South Korea, United Kingdom, Europe, United States of America, Mauritius, Australia and the South East Asian Region. Clog Two have also been commissioned by renowned brands such as, Mercedes-Benz, G-Shock, Google, Adidas, Microsoft, Apple, Converse, MightyJaxx, Oracle Digital Prime and Singapore Tourism Board.

Ink Ten is a visual artist and co-founder of the visual art duo, The Ink & Clog, established in 2012 together with the like- minded visual artist, Clogtwo. The Ink & Clog has always vision themselves in pushing the art form from traditional methods to new-media digital platforms. Ink Ten’s practice manifest from the mathematical calculation of geometry and abstract expressionism. Adapting the ideas and fundamentals from her graphic design background, Inkten has implemented techniques onto her Graffiti wall works, creating a style call the GeoGraffiti. Ink Ten has worked with well renown brands and clients such as Apple, Microsoft, Google, Saatchi&Saatchi, Hogarth, National Arts Council, Vans and Billabong. Inkten is also an active speaker who have shared numerous talks at TED, Apple and Microsoft.

Avec humour et beaucoup de fantaisie, ses compositions offrent un rendu graphique soigné, virevoltant et emprunt à la réalité. Elle a notamment travaillé pour Starbucks, McDonald’s, Uber ou encore Red Bull.

Yellow Mushmellow (Aida Saad) is a visual artist whose comics and illustrations involve a playful mix of colours, words, and fun characters. Her work often draws from personal experiences and everyday things, making it relatable to many.

Artiste pluridisciplinaire, Asfi K utilise l’espace urbain comme terrain de jeu pour ses réalisations à la fois engagées et fantaisistes. De ses mini personnages parsemés dans la ville à ses collages ou ses peintures, l’artiste ne se cantonne pas à un savoir-faire en particulier. Il sculpte à partir de matériaux de récupération et invente ainsi un monde hybride avec des techniques de création diverses.

Asfi K believes that he holds the ability to create, communicate and relate to someone other than myself. Asfi’s works are, in a way, a tale told by his own efforts, of his own efforts, aspirations and desires. Finding a way to express himself in his works is a joyful challenge. As a technician by day, the opportunity to express creatively is very much suppressed, but that suppression is carried over somewhat when he actually has the opportunity to indulge himself. He sets limits to his own creativity, and tries to break them. The achievement is its own reward. And so it is with the Challenge, the Challenger, and the Reward.

ANTHONY CHONG(ANTZ)

Graffiti artist, Antz détient un style qui fait référence à la culture chinoise : sa mythologie, son dialecte et son identité. Il réussi à créer un intéressant mélange de styles urbains contemporains juxtaposés avec des visuels et influences traditionnelles chinoises. Antz est également co-fondateur du collectif de design The Geeksigners avec d'autres artistes comme Clog Two. Il a aussi participé à des projets internationaux pour Adidas, Nike, Converse et MTV Asia.

Anthony Chong aka ANTZ, meteoric rise from obscurity to becoming one of the upcoming urban artists to look out for stems from his unique illustrative style. A style which makes heavy references to chinese culture; from mythology to dialect and identity, ANTZ has managed to create an interesting juxtapozed mash of contemporary urban styles with traditional chinese visuals and influences. ANTZ is constantly on the lookout for new approaches in making and creating his art, be it in medium or concept. Apart from being a full time art director professionally, ANTZ is also the co- founder of the design collective The Geeksigners. As an artist, ANTZ has been involved in renowned projects and international events such as ADIDAS, NIKE, IdN, Converse, Taggerbags, Tiger Translate, Ministry of Sound (Singapore), MTV asia and many more.

YANG DERONG

Ayant fait carrière dans le design de mode notamment aux côtés de Jean Charles de Castelbajac, Yang Derong propose de façon régulière depuis des années des portraits de personnages réels ou imaginés en se travestissant et en se déguisant lui même. Auteur de la plateforme « Faces Of The Day », c’est un véritable catalogue de figures à la fois traditionnelles issues de la culture de Singapour, mais aussi fantaisistes et empruntées à la culture occidentale. Il décrit ainsi sa démarche comme un dialogue visuel collaboratif pour inspirer à rêver, à sourire, à penser et à remettre en question ce qui nous entoure.

Yang Derong spent seven years in Paris as Directeur de Style with fashion designer Jean Charles de Castelbajac, and as Global Image Director of Esprit International from 1994 to 2006. He has since returned to Singapore, where he has been involved in many high profile international and government projects, including being the National Day Parade art director and costume designer for Singapore’s Golden Jubilee celebrations. In addition to a career in fashion design, image and branding, as well as creative direction, Yang has designed costumes for Singapore theatre – including Beauty. World, Hotpants and Forbidden City – Portrait of an Empress, which won him an M1–The Straits Times Life! Theatre Award in 2003. He reprised this role in the 2017 run of Forbidden City.

Daniel Tham, alias The Skinny Fists, est conservateur au Musée National de Singapour. Loin de ses fonctions muséales, Tham est un photographe de rue passionné qui capture la vie quotidienne de Singapour et de ses habitants. À travers sa série de photographies, Tham partage un aperçu au jour le jour, capturant les différentes émotions et moments de la ville à un rythme effréné. Son approche presque voyeuriste permet au public une expérience au premier plan dans le moment capturé.

Daniel Tham aka The Skinny Fists is a curator with the National Museum of Singapore. Away from his museum duties, Tham is an avid street photographer who captures the daily life of Singapore and its people.Through his series of photographs, Tham shares an insight of the day to day, capturing the different emotions and moments in the fast paced city. His almost voyeuristic approach, allows the audience the first hand experience in the moment captured.

Xiuli Tan est une voyageuse et photographe singapourienne. Elle s'intéresse à l'appréciation des sites et des environs. À travers ses photos, elle espère inciter les gens à explorer et à découvrir les «Spots Instagram», tout en sortant des sentiers battus pour comprendre et démêler la beauté cachée à la vue.

Tan Xiuli is a Singaporean traveler and photographer. Tan’s practice looks into the appreciation of sites and surroundings. Particularly she addresses her discovery in new perspectives of what home means to her, and the hidden beauty amongst the mundane. She loves to discover new places and return to old places and hopes that one day, we will all be able to wander freely without the restrictions of borders and passports. Through her photos, she hopes to inspire people to get out and explore, to find the “Instagram Spots”, but veer off the beaten track by staying just a little longer to understand and unravel the hidden beauty in plain sight.

À l’occasion de cette exposition, RSCLS présente « The Graffiti Diorama », une installation de 10 boîtes miniatures qui recréent des fresques murales de Singapour datant pour certaines des années 2000 des artistes Skope, Syco ou encore Killer Gerbil.Cette installation redonne vie à ces compositions depuis disparues, mais qui marquent les débuts de l’ère graffiti à Singapour. On the occasion of this exhibition, RSCLS presents « The Graffiti Diorama », an installation of 10 miniature boxes, which recreate walls from Singapore dating back 2000s from artists like Skope, Syco or Killer Gerbil.This installation gives new life to these compositions since it disappeared, and remind us the beginning of the graffiti era in Singapore.

DAVID CHAN

David Chan est à la fois un artiste à temps plein et enseignant à l’université. Lauréat de prix artistiques, il est aussi à l'aise en sculpture qu'en peinture. Ses sujets tournent autour du comportement humain et des représentations du commentaire social. David a exposé dans plusieurs pays dont la Chine, l'Amérique, Taiwan, l'Indonésie, la Corée et la Malaisie. En 2011, son travail a été sélectionné pour la 54ème Biennale de Venise à la Fondazione Claudio Buziol. David est également invité en résidence où il réalisera des sculptures durant Urban Art Singapore.

Artist, Adjunct lecturer at National Institute of Education and School of Arts Design and Media, Founder of Art Project Lab LLP, Artist Mentor (NAC), Pathfinder (MOE). David Chan is a full-time artist and also an earnest arts educator. In 2004, he won the 23rd UOB Painting of the Year – Representational Medium Category Award. Comfortable in both sculpture and painting, his subject matters revolve around human behavior and representations of social commentary. David has exhibited in a number of countries including, China, America, Taiwan, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, and in 2011 his work was selected for the 54th Venice Biennale at the Fondazione Claudio Buziol, the same work traveled to the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam in Netherlands the next year. Apart from making art, David also lectures at National Institute of Education and School of Art Design & Media in National Technological University. He is currently an Artist Mentor with National arts council and also a Pathfinder with Ministry of Education.

RIZMAN PUTRA

Lauréat du Singapore Foundation Arts Award en 2005, Rizman Putra réalise des performances et des installations laissant libre cours à l’improvisation et à son imagination. L’espace urbain et la musique sont ses principaux outils de création. « Je crois que l'art doit transcender toutes les frontières et tous les genres. C'est de cela qu'il s'agit dans mes performances et mes créations. Mon but ultime est d'absorber toutes les cultures qui m'entourent et de produire une fusion de ce produit. La consommation des arts devrait être portée à la connaissance des masses. Un jour, toutes les formes d'art seront accessibles à l'homme de la rue. »

Founded in 1989, the Berthéas gallery, specialised in the « Figuration An artist of multiple personas, Rizman Putra (Manic Jango) has been actively blurring the lines between performance, visual arts and music for the last decade. Winner of Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (JCCI) Singapore Foundation Arts Award 2005 (as part of the artist collective Kill Your Television [KYTV]) of which he is co-founder, he is also front man for an indie music group, Tiramisu. “My belief is that art should transcend all boundaries and genres. This is what my performances and creations are about. My ultimate goal is to imbibe all cultures around me and produce an amalgamation of tha tproduct. The consumption of the Arts should be brought to the masses. One day all art forms will be accessible to the man on the street.”

Les artistes Brandon Tay & Safuan Johari illumineront le basement de l’exposition en proposant une installation artistique multimédia via le concept du vidéo mapping : « Typology ». Véritable immersion dans leur univers numérique grâce à la projection de vidéos, cette sphère fantastique se compose d’éléments hybrides, abstraits et figuratifs de l’environnement urbain de Singapour, garantissant un effet visuel unique et impressionnant.

‘Typology’ scans through the archetypal urban landscape of Singapore. From the ubiquitous public housing blocks to the iconic brutalist architecture landmarks, images are broken down and manipulated to reveal layers of the built-up panaroma.The second movement unveils 50 Singaporean faces from an expansive range in terms of age, ethnicity and social strata. Forming a bedrock in a datadriven animation, the faces start to morph into each other attempting to highlight similarities in search of the definitive Singaporean look.Using open-source databases, the final movement visualises the Singaporean digital footprint generated by population data and social media metrics. These vectors are represented as visual agents to complete this abstract survey of identity. In its original installation, ‘Typology’ was presented without any audio component due to its close proximity with a sound-art piece on the exhibition ground. For this upcoming showing, a sound-design component will be included to make it a complete audio-visual piece.

MusiqueLe soir du vernissage ainsi que les 1er et 2 février seront rythmés par les sons pop et jazz de l’artiste Michelle Poh, grande figure de la scène musicale de Singapour.Michelle croise les genres, fusionne la musique et les éléments individuels des joueurs, avec soul, jazz et blues comme fils conducteurs. Son talent d'improvisation sans effort et son sens du spectacle font d'elle une artiste populaire. Avec un groupe de premier ordre et un charisme qui a charmé les gens du monde entier, Michelle transforme les événements en spectacles. Issue d'une génération comptant peu de mentors en musiques autochtones, Michelle s'est produite, avec le soutien des plus grands passionnistes hollandais, d'artistes tels qu'Anouk et Marco Bosato, et a enregistré avec des musiciens espagnols, dont le pionnier espagnol du flamenco rock-Andaluz et le talent local basé en Espagne, Nantha Kumar.

Danse Le duo de danseurs DanseMeAsheep, composé de Christina Chan (Singapour) et Aymeric Bichon (France), réalisera une performance de danse, « Of Fish Dreaming », du jeudi 7 au dimanche 10 février de 18h à 20h.« Of Fish Dreaming » est un projet international soutenu par le Singapore National Arts Council. L’oeuvre se compose d’un duo de performances en direct et est accompagnée d’un court métrage.

MICHELLE POH

Michelle est une musicienne indépendante, dynamique et novatrice, qui possède une capacité unique à assimiler les divers sons et voix des per-sonnes et des musiciens qu'elle rencontre. Peu de temps après la sortie de son premier album "Multiplicity", Michelle a été nommée "Meilleure artiste féminine" aux VIMA Music Awards en Asie. Elle a également été nominée pour le "Best Genre-Bender Award" et a été classée dans la liste mondiale de Unsigned Only 2018, le seul artiste singapourien et asiatique, rare parmi des artistes principalement d'Amérique du Nord et du Sud, d'Europe et d'Australie, avec 3 catégories Adult Contemporary Alternative", "Auteur-compositeur-interprète" et "Capture d'écran". Depuis son lancement en janvier 2018, Multiplicity a depuis effectué ses tournées en Italie (Milan, Rome, Bologne), en Allemagne (Wesel), aux Philippines (Manille), au Vietnam (DaLat, Ho Chi Minh) et en Thaïlande (Phuket). La multiplicité marque l’essence de la musique de Michelle, c’est-à-dire la beauté de la diversité et la collaboration mondiale, avec Singapour comme force centrifuge.

Michelle is an independent music artiste with a soulful and trailblazing dynamic, and a unique ability to assimilate the various sounds & voices of people and musicians she meets. DANSEMEASHEEP

Of Fish Dreaming est un projet international de collaboration entre Christina Chan (Singapour) et Aymeric Bichon (France) et leur danse-measheep collectif. Soutenue par la subvention de création du Singapore National Arts Council, l’œuvre consiste en un duo de per-formances en direct et en un court métrage d'accompagnement de l'oeuvre intitulé Blue Portal. Inspiré par les thèmes du livre, l’astéroïde B-612 tire son nom du "Petit Prince" d’Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

Of Fish Dreaming is an international Collaboration Project between Christina Chan (Singapore) and Aymeric Bichon (France) and their collective dancemeasheep. Supported by the Singapore National Arts Council’s creation grant, the work consists of a full length live performance duet and a companion short film to the work entitled Blue Portal. Inspired by the book’s themes, Asteroid B-612 gets its name from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s "The Little Prince".

URBAN FILMSFESTIVALInitié par RStyle et soutenu par la mission Cinéma de la Ville de Paris, l’Urban Films Festival est, en France, le premier festival international de films dédié à la ville, aux cultures urbaines et à toutes les pratiques et modes de vie qui en émanent.Chaque année, le festival est accueilli par de nombreuses villes à l'international pour organiser la sélection des meilleures réalisations locales.Le festival a déjà été programmé en Nouvelle-Calédonie, au Canada, au Brésil, en Ouganda, à La Réunion et au Liban.L’Urban Films Festival se matérialise aussi par un événement annuel à Paris.

Initiated by RStyle and supported by the Mission Cinema from the city of Paris, the Urban Films Festival is, in France, the first international film festival dedicated to the city, to urban cultures and all the practices and lifestyles that emanate from them.Each year the festival is hosted by many cities abroad to organize the selection of the best local productions. The festival has already been organized in New Caledonia, Canada, Brazil, Uganda, Reunion and Lebanon.The Urban Films Festival is also materialized by an annual event in Paris.


1 Behind These Walls, Lion City’s GraffitiThis short documentary features local and foreign graf-fiti artists in Singapore expressing their views about graffiti as a form of artistic expression, its social impact and the inevitable tension between graffiti and vandal-ism, and between practitioners and the authorities.

2 Billabong Just Landed Episode 6This is a video-blog of a Singapore skateboarder about spaces in Singapore where skateboarders can hone their craft.

3 Cinemagraph CompilationThis video features the arrival of a videographer/film-maker in Singapore and the images he captures of urban life, including a Malay wedding, and the urban-scape of Singapore.

4 Culture State – Defying GraffitiThis is a video of the Culturestate Festival, an indoor exhibition of street art in Singapore held in 2013. It fea-tures interviews with well-known local street artists like SKLO and ZERO discussing issues such as the develop-ment of street art in Singapore.

5 Summer Surfin’A playful and spirited video featuring members of the Longboard Girls Crew Singapore – the Singapore chap-ter of the international community of female longboard-ers. Decked in Heyday Streetwear, the young female skaters are seen hanging out at the retro Kombi Rocks Diner in Yio Chu Kang before setting off in a Kombi for a fun day of skating in iconic open spaces in Singapore like Marina Bay. With the ingenious use of a simple tarp, they simulate surfing the ocean waves in the summer on their longboards.

6 InkClog x Wadezig!This clip provides a glimpse into the collaborative process of two well-known local visual/graffiti artists – Clog Two and InkTen. Co-founders of Singapore’s visual art duo collective The Ink and Clog, they are shown doing a piece entitled ‘Nebula and her Coffee’ on the walls of the WADEZIG! Office in Bandung, Indonesia - a clothing and lifestyle brand strongly influenced by urban art.

7 JUST WRITING MY NAME Just Writing My Name Singapore 2013 was organised at Somerset Skate Park & Youth Park in Singapore as a platform for local graffiti artists to express themselves and show their work. The video shows the artists at work.

8 Menace by NatureThis travelog details the train journey by two Malaysian skateboarders to Singapore to meet up with fellow skaterboarders in Singapore. The film allows us to see Singapore’s urban landscape through the eyes of a skateboarder, offering a different perspective and experience of the country.

9 Woks of ArtThis short clip features the “Woks of Arts” series launched by Tiger Beer. Curated and directed by the Glue Society’s James Dive, 20 contemporary Sydney and Auckland based artists were given an authentic wok straight from the streets of Singapore to create works of art to celebrate the spirited, loud and energetic street food culture of Singapore.

10 WORDThe short clip features an exhibition titled “Word”, which is an art show covering different styles and expressions of writings. It contains works of 25 artists around the world doing art in different scripts (Arabic, Braille and Urdu) in various mediums, styles and formats (includ-ing animation and augmented reality). The exhibition was part of the Singapore Writers’ Festival POP in November 2018.

11 Your Singapore – Parkour in SingaporeA short clip of two young people performing parkour tricks along the streets of Singapore.

12 Zero Anthology of the AbysmalThis is a short clip of reactionary artist, ZERO, doing a spray painting of his work for his exhibition – An Anthology of the Abysmal – which delves into the emo-tional life of the artist.

13 Radikal Forze Jam 2018This video showcases highlights from the 2018 Radikal Forze Jam, an annual international break-dancing competition organised by Radikal Forze and *SCAPE in Singapore. The 2018 edition also celebrates the 20th anniversary of Radikal Forze Crew, pioneers of break-dancing culture in Singapore.

14 The Gum Chase – Red Bull Skate ArcadeThis video follows Singaporean skateboarder Farris Rahman’s arrival in Hong Kong and his chase of Hong Kong skateboarder Chun Chai through the bustling streets of the city.

15 SOLIDARITY21 SINGAPORE x INDONESIAA video of an urban art cultural exchange bringing together graffiti artists from Singapore and Indonesia. Though they come from different backgrounds, they are all bound by their common passion for street art.

16 Singapura Graffiti FallsA time lapse of the production of a Graffiti Falls mural by The Ink&Clog and Shen3 at Aliwal Arts Centre, Singapore, inspired by Gravity Falls, an American ani-mated series.

17 The Arts Zul An interview with Zul aka Zero, a graffiti artist from Singapore and recipient of the Singapore National Arts Council’s “Young Artist Award”.

À travers eux, nous aimerions remercier le Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth et le National Art Council de Singapour qui ont approuvé et subventionné le projet, permettant ainsi à la culture urbaine de Singapour de s'épanouir un peu plus à travers cette exposition. Un immense merci à Charlene Lim, consultante culturel à l'Ambassade de Singapour, qui a toujours été à nos côtés et qui remplit merveilleusement son rôle de soutien à la création entre la France et Singapour, sans elle aussi rien n'existerait.

Merci du fond du coeur aux artistes qui n'ont pas eu peur de suivre le chemin que nous leur pro-posions, malgré des délais très courts, avec beaucoup d'énergie. Ils ont su confier à Iman Ismail, commissaire d'exposition hors pair, les rênes d'un mois de leurs vies.
