Text To World

How does the text connect to something in my life? Can I learn something from it? Does it remind me of something I know or have experienced?

How does the text connect to the real world I live in? Do people need to learn from this? Does it say something about the world today or in the past/future? Have I heard about this kind of thing in another place/time?

How does this text connect to another text I know about? Does it share similar plot, setting, characters, situations, themes with another text?

Making Connections

1. Put the title of the text in the center of the folded triangle.

2. Draw a picture or use colours and graphics to show the main idea of the text

3. On each flap write an example of something from the text and example that shows how you connect it to : self, world, text.

My Favourite Holiday Report Booklet

Materials: single sheet of paper, scissors, glue or two sided tape. Instructions: 1. To make this book you can use the template provided

or : • Fold a piece of paper (the larger the paper the

larger the pages) in half hot dog style. You can recycle pages that have printing on one side to make your booklet if you wish.

• Fold the paper in half again hot dog style. • Unfold completely and then fold hamburger

style in half and then in half again. • Unfold you paper – you should now have a 4x4

grid with 16 squares. 2. Turn the paper on its side (landscape) and cut along

the centre dotted line or fold of the paper 3 squares up.

3. Turn your scissors to the right and cut along the crease or dotted line one square. Then turn your scissors right again and cut the length of two squares.

4. Go back to the centre and repeat this process going left this time.

5. Start folding like a fan starting with an inner square such as the one with the star in the illustration; over and under and around the corners until you reach the end of the paper.

6. Use glue to fasten together the unneeded sides of pages so that your booklet has a cover and back with 6 inner folds in the interior.

7. To bind the spine, use a piece of plain or coloured tape.

This is a great format for an ELL in the early stages to practice vocabulary while making a report on a Canadian holiday. I have included a blank report and sample of a well done report. The empty template shows how to lay out text and pictures before folding the page into a booklet.

CUT OUT CIRCLE AND THEN CUT INWARDS ALONG THE DOTTED LINES. GLUE CENTER ONTO CHART.

Welcome to our planet: Purpose: Create a booklet to express students’ concerns and interests about stewardship of the earth. Provide an opportunity to brainstorm and organize environmental awareness information using a web. Give students a chance to write simple sentences to explain, sequence, and describe using simple transitions and academic vocabulary. Procedure: 1. Use the web to brainstorm ideas and vocabulary

relating to why it is important to look after our planet and what we can do to be better stewards of the earth.

2. Using the left-hand chart, write 4 sentences to explain how to care for the earth.

3. Using the right-hand chart, create a sequence of 3 reasons why people should care about the earth.

4. Come up with and explain 4 concerns people should know about in terms of air, water, land, and life on this planet. Write your concerns in the centre chart, leaving room in the centre to glue on your earth picture.

5. Assemble and edit your booklet to make sure it is neat, colourful, and free of errors.

6. Share your finished booklet with others!
