Le bureau d’architecture Richter-Dahl Rocha & Associés célèbrecette année le vingtième anniversaire de sa création. Fondé en1993 à Lausanne, en Suisse, par Jacques Richter et Ignacio DahlRocha, il est le fruit d’une amitié née dix ans auparavant à l’Uni-versité de Yale où tous deux réalisaient leurs études postgrades.La direction du bureau est complétée dès le début par KennethRoss. Puis, Christian Leibbrandt, rejoint l’équipe peu après. Enfin,en 2007, Fabrizio Giacometti prend la responsabilité de l’équipeRéalisation.

Le bureau défend une architecture dans laquelle la pertinence etla beauté d’une œuvre surgissent de son sens technique et fonc-tionnel, en harmonie avec le contexte historique et culturel. The architecture office of Richter-Dahl Rocha & Associés is cele-brating its twentieth anniversary this year. Founded in 1993 inLausanne, Switzerland, by Jacques Richter and Ignacio DahlRocha, it is the fruit borne of a friendship which blossomed tenyears previously at Yale University, USA, where the two under-took postgraduate study. The management of the office has beencompletely led by Kenneth Ross since the beginning. Then, Chris-tian Leibbrandt joined the team shortly afterwards. Finally, in2007, Fabrizio Giacometti assumed responsibility of the Realisa-tion team.

The office supports architecture in which the relevance and thebeauty of a piece emerge from its technical and functional mean-ing, in harmony with the cultural and historical context. It pro-poses a model of professional practise which searches for a

balance between creativity and efficiency, associated with thesame level of excellence. The office's competencies cover abroad range of professional services, including the conception,the planning and the implementation of projects relevant to thefield of architecture, town planning and design. In 2000, the de-velopment of activities in the latter field lead to the creation ofthe sister organisation of RDR Design. In 2005, the group wascompleted by the creation of RDR Arquitectos, which is basedin Buenos Aires, Argentina. Since then, this team has worked inclose collaboration with the Lausanne office, thus favouring arich, human and cultural exchange as well as a transfer of knowl-edge and technology between the two countries.

The new EPFL “Quartier de l’Innovation” in Lausanne is an office and laboratories complex combined with green spaces, which is intended to promote exchanges between scientific research and the initiatives ofprivate enterprises.

Le complexe industriel et administratif de Bobst, terminé en 2012, réunit toutes les activités du groupe sur son site de Mex, en harmonieavec le cadre privilégié de la campagne vaudoise.

The Bobst administraive and industrial complex, completed in 2012,brings together all the group's activities on its Mex site, in harmony withthe wonderful surroundings of the Vaud countryside.

Le «Swiss Tech Convention Center» fait partie de la nouvelle organi-sation de l’EPFL, à Lausanne, qui s’achèvera en 2014. Il est composé d’uncentre de congrès comprenant une salle modulable, d’un complexe d’ha-bitations pour étudiants, de commerces, d’un parking et d’une nouvellestation de métro.

The “Swiss Tech Convention Center” forms part of the new EPFL organi-sation in Lausanne, which will be completed in 2014. It consists of a con-vention centre, comprising a modular room, an accommodation complexfor students, businesses, a car park and a new metro station.

ArtchitectureL’année 2005 marque le début d’expériences en commun entreles architectes Richter-Dahl Rocha & Associés et l’artiste Cathe-rine Bolle.

Le fruit de cette collaboration constituait le thème de l’exposition«Artchitecture» qui fit partie des journées «Ecosuiza» organiséespar l’Ambassade de Suisse en Argentine dans la «maisonurbaine» des Dahl Rocha, à Buenos Aires. L’exposition se dérou-lait dans trois espaces: le premier dédié à l’œuvre de l’artiste, ledeuxième à un diaporama de l’œuvre des architectes, et finale-ment le troisième espace présentait cinq œuvres réalisées encollaboration avec Catherine Bolle.

Ce travail en commun a permis aux architectes de retrouver lafinesse d’une sensibilité esthétique que les exigences de la pro-fession peuvent éroder. En définitive, cette expérience les aincités à explorer les limites de l’horizon architectural sans recourirà la voie de l’arbitraire, de la rhétorique ou de l’extravagance.

Pour Catherine Bolle, cette aventure lui a donné la possibilitéd’approfondir la dimension du travail collectif. Elle lui a donné éga-lement l’opportunité de conquérir un nouvel espace public.

ArtchitectureThe year 2005 marks the beginning of the sharing of experiencebetween architects Richter-Dahl Rocha & Associés and the artistCatherine Bolle.

The fruit of the collaboration formed the subject of the “Artchitec-ture” exhibition, which was part of the “Ecosuiza” days organisedby the Swiss Embassy in Argentina in Dahl Rocha's “urbanhouse” in Buenos Aires. The exhibition was spread over threespaces: the first dedicated to the œuvre of the artist, the secondto a slide show of the architects' work, and finally the third spacepresented five pieces created in collaboration with CatherineBolle.

This collaborative work allowed the architects to recapture the sub-tlety of an aesthetic sensitivity that can be eroded by the require-ments of the profession. At the end of the day, this experienceencouraged them to explore the limits of the architectural horizonwithout resorting to the arbitrary, to rhetoric or to extravagance.

For Catherine Bolle, this adventure has given her the possibilityof broadening her scope of collective work. It has also given herthe opportunity to conquer a new public space.

Villa Buenos Mares, José Ignacio, Rocha, Uruguay, 2009Avec l’équipe de RDR Arquitectos de Buenos Aires, le bureaua eu l’opportunité d’aborder le thème du logement individuelpeu approché jusqu’alors en Suisse. Ce fut une riche expé-rience qui a permis d’appliquer la philosophie de travail du bu-reau dans un contexte bien différent notamment en matière declimat et de techniques de construction. Construite dans la sta-tion balnéaire de Punta del Este, en Uruguay, la villa BuenosMares s’inscrit dans la tradition moderne et s’intègre dans sonenvironnement naturel par une austérité formelle. La villas’identifie à l’aridité du paysage par l’utilisation de murs enpierres locales. Dans cette maison au caractère introverti, la masse de la façade d’accès contraste avec la compositionouverte et perméable ouverte sur la mer.

This was a richexperience which permitted the application of the office's work-ing philosophy within a different context, notably on the subjectof climate and construction techniques. Constructed on thecoastal resort of Punta del Este, in Uruguay, the villa BuenosMares falls within the realms of modern tradition and is inte-grated into its natural environment through its formal austerity.The villa identifies with the arid landscape through its use of wallsmade from local stones. In this introverted house, the weight ofthe entrance façade contrasts with the open and permeablearrangement opening on to the sea.

Le programme se développe en forme de «L» etréunit également les fonctions usuelles sur un seul étage. Seulela chambre principale est située à l’étage supérieur. L’expressionsculpturale du volume est obtenue par le contraste entre l’impres-sion de vide des espaces publics et le caractère massif desespaces privés. �

The rusticity of the natural slate floors, the lapachowood in the openings and the furniture complete the range ofmaterials. The programme develops in an“L” shape and alsounites all the usual facilities over one single floor. Only the masterbedroom is situated on the upper floor. The sculptural expressionof volume is achieved via the contrast between the impressionof the emptiness of the public spaces and the solid character ofthe private spaces. �
