    Bernard Hanon, Renault CEO at thetime, declared, This car is the

    natural result when you go beyond

    all vehicular vanity. He had just

    returned from a long stay in the

    United States, and like Philippe

    Gudon, CEO of Matra Automobiles,

    had noted the craze for well-

    equipped vans. Both were convinced

    that there was a market in Europe

    for a fun, multifunctional family

    vehicle.

    In December 1982, Philippe Gudon

    met Bernard Hanon, Renault tech-

    nical manager Pierre Tiberghien, and

    Renault product manager ChristianMartin, and showed them the Matra

    P 23 project. The prototype had been

    proposed to Peugeot, but had been

    rejected by the brand with the lion

    emblem. And yet, Peugeot CEO Jean

    Boillot was convinced that this type

    of car represents a turning point

    in terms of bodywork that is asimportant as Diesel was in terms of

    mechanics. Some will take to it,

    some wont!

    Matra P 23 1983

    It was in 1979 that Philippe Gudon,

    keen to find a sequel to the Bagheera

    and Rancho assembled on his

    production lines at Romorantin,

    ordered a first mock-up to be made.

    The headlights and back seat were

    borrowed from the Peugeot 604,

    while the bodywork used a Talbot

    Solara base Because Philippe

    Gudon was thinking of presenting

    the project to PSA. In September,

    PSA asked Matra to pursue the study

    that would lead in two directions: a

    compact car, the P17, which was

    deemed to have too little cabinspace, and a longer version, the P18.

    In 1981, the body structure was

    finalised and Matra even thought of

    utility versions. The management of

    PSA, however, put off making a

    decision before finally refusing. The

    same thing happened with Citron.

    Mantra therefore modified his projectand, at the end of 1981, presented

    the P20 based on the future Citron

    BX. Citrons response was even

    more negative than Peugeots the

    brand with the chevrons argued that

    the vehicle would be too expensive

    to produce.

    But at Renault, Bernard Hanon wasimpressed. In 1982, the Matra

    project was called P23. It had been

    modified considerably, as the Solara

    base (with a transverse engine) had

    been replaced by a Renault 18 base

    with a longitudinal engine. The new

    version had been given a smoother

    contour by Renaults Design depart-

    ment, and was getting closer to the

    final look. The idea of a utility vehicle

    had been dropped, but the flat floorwas still there, as was the revolu-

    tionary feature of this car: the option

    to have independent, removable back

    seats. Another revolutionary idea

    seen in the Matra 23 was the hot-

    galvanised chassis cage covered

    with laminated polyester panels.

    A cooperat ion agreement between

    the two companies was signed in

    June 1983, and the Matra P23became the Renault Espace. Matra

    was asked to manufacture it, using

    mechanical units from Renault. The

    first Espace cars rolled off of the

    assembly line in 1984.

    Georges Besse had just been

    appointed as CEO at Renault.

    Mais les dirigeants de PSA tardent prendre une dcision, elle sera fina-

    lement ngative. Tout comme chezCitron. Matra remodifie alors son

    projet et prsente fin 1981 le P 20 surla base de la future Citron BX. Le

    refus est encore plus catgorique que

    chez Peugeot, la marque aux chevrons

    avanant que le vhicule est trop cher fabriquer.

    A linverse, chez Renault, BernardHanon est sduit. Et en 1982, le projet

    de Matra sappelle P 23. Il a volu

    notablement car, en effet, la base

    Solara (moteur transversal) a t

    abandonne, remplace par celle dela Renault 18 moteur longitudinal.Cette nouvelle mouture a vu ses

    formes assouplies par le Service

    Design de Renault et elles approchent

    leur aspect dfinitif.

    Lide dutilitaire a t abandonne,

    mais le plancher plat reste et avec luila caractristique rvolutionnaire de

    cette automobile : la possibilit de

    siges arrires indpendants et

    dmontables. Sur la Matra P 23, le

    principe dun chssis cage, galvanis chaud, recouvert de panneaux depolyester stratifi est lui aussi rvolu-tionnaire.

    Aprs la signature, en juin 1983, dunaccord de coopration entre les deuxentreprises, la Matra P 23 devient leRenault Espace et sa fabrication est

    confie Matra partir dorganesmcaniques Renault.

    Les premiers Espace sortent de chaneds 1984. Georges Besse vient dtrenomm PDG de Renault.

    Timeline

    The beginnings

    (1979 - 1981)In 1979, Philippe Gudon asked Antoine Volanis to make a proposal for anAmerican van-type vehicle. He came up what would become known as theorange design. Elegant, dynamic, unique contours, far removed from the

    utilitarian image of a van. It was a 3-door vehicle with the drivers position

    brought forward over the front wheels, and a suggestion of the Ranchos

    high roof.

    P16, P17, and P18prototypesThe plans showed a more traditional design. The transverse engine was

    brought to the front and the seat rows were in a more conventional position.

    The forward-placed cockpit was abandoned for safety reasons.

    In June 1979, a solid mock-up was made, followed by a hollow mock-up

    with a fully fitted inter ior. Between the two mock-ups the design had evolved

    and the high roof was abandoned. The bodywork was based on the Talbot

    Solara with theme variations: Weekend, Grand Raid, etc. Matra would take

    the concept further with the P17 and the P16, followed by the P18 with itselegant, sporty lines. In October 1981 the bodywork took on its final shape,

    including for vans, pickups, etc.

    Project P 23becomes

    Espace (1982)

    By October 1982, the project had changed considerably. Antoine Volanis

    had left Matra. The base used by Matra became that of the Renault 18.

    Front-wheel drive, a longitudinal engine, and a front axle inspired by the

    Fuego.

    The P23 was presented to the CEO, Bernard Hanon, with smoother lines

    and an almost finalised shape. Studies for a utility version gave the idea to

    make the most out of the flat floor by using removable seats. Up till then,

    all studies had kept a conventional back seat. And thats when this car got

    its most innovative feature...

    The launch was planned for spring 1984 with commercial release through

    Renaults European network. In January 1984, preproduction models werereleased from the Matra assembly lines, and the manufacturing of produc-

    tion models started in March. At Renault, the Matra P23 became Espace

    Renault Project J11.

    En juin 1979, une maquette pleine est ralise, suivie dune maquette creuseavec son amnagement intrieur complet. Entre les deux maquettes le dessina volu, le toit rehauss est abandonn. La carrosserie repose sur une basede Talbot Solara et des variantes proposent dif frents thmes : Week-end,

    Grand-raid Matra fera voluer le concept avec, le P 17 et le P 16. Puis,le P 18 la ligne lgante et sportive. En octobre 1981, la carrosserie estdfinitive, y compris pour des fourgons, pick-up...

    Le projet P 23devient

    Espace (1982)

    En octobre 1982, le projet volue beaucoup. Antoine Volanis a quitt Matra.

    La base utilise par Matra devient celle de la Renault 18. Une traction

    avant, moteur longitudinal et elle emprunte son train avant la Fuego.

    Prsent au PDG de la Rgie, Bernard Hanon, le P 23 voit ses formes

    assouplies et quasi dfinitives. Ltude dune version utilitaire donne ide de

    valoriser le plancher plat en utilisant des siges dmontables. Jusqualors

    les tudes retenaient une banquette classique. Et cest l quapparat la

    caractristique la plus innovante de cette automobile

    Le lancement se fera au printemps 1984 avec commercialisation par le

    rseau europen de Renault. En janvier 1984 les modles de prsrie

    sortent des chanes Matra et les modles de srie sont fabriqus partirde mars. Chez Renault, la Matra P23 est devenue Projet J11 Espace

    Renault.

    1984-1985: Renault adopts the MPVA MPV, not such a new conceptIn 1984, the French automobile cele-

    brated its 100th anniversary and in

    a bleak economic context, and

    Renault found itself in a financially

    tight spot. Georges Besse replaced

    Bernard Hanon as CEO with the task

    of sorting out the situation.

    In these challenging times, Renault

    sped up the renewal of its range by

    launching three new models: the

    Renault 25, the Espace, and the

    Super 5. Launching the Renault 25

    and Espace only a few months apart

    meant having two alternatives at the

    right time for the concept of a cars

    for life and living. At the same time,

    the brand got involved in racing, with

    the 5 turbo, the 11 turbo. But above

    all, it embarked on a drastic cost-

    cutting policy and refocused on its

    core business. It was against this

    picture that the Espace was launched

    in June 1984. For Renault, it was aconsiderable risk. But one that

    turned out to be well worth it.

    Since the early 1980s, cars more

    than ever became a way to show

    ones social status. Drivers existed

    in the image portrayed by their car.Manufacturers in Europe and the

    world over were looking for a new

    car concept to impress their custo-

    mers. A vehicle for the motorist, the

    family man, rather than for the engi-

    neer hankering for innovation. A car

    that was comfortable and elegantlike a sedan, one that could transport

    the whole family and their luggage.

    A practical car that could be used

    for all kinds of leisure activities, from

    fishing to skiing trips. Renault CEO

    Bernard Hanon asked for the interior

    to be reshuffled to make it moremodular. This was the advent of the

    present-day MPV.

    A multi-purpose people carrierThe MPV concept had been mulled

    over at Renault as well as at other

    manufacturers. Research and work

    on this type of vehicle had already

    started around the 1940s with the

    Escoffier taxi project in 1945, desi-

    gned by Jacques Rousseau on a

    Renault base. In 1948 another taxi

    appeared, based on the Juvaquatre

    platform. In 1957 Renault started to

    look seriously at an up-market

    concept with a 900-type forward-

    placed cockpit. With its V8 engine

    it was considered too avant-garde.

    1960 and 1961 saw the Selenes,

    designed by the coachbuilder Ghia.

    Then came Marcel Beligonds design

    in 1961. But finally the concept was

    abandoned and this line of research

    came to an end until Antoine

    Volaniss sketch for an Espace found

    its way back onto the drawing boards

    at the end of the 1970s. Then in

    1982 came the Renault Trafic

    Mridienne, built by Chausson

    based on an idea from Marc Held.

    Thus, when Renault introduced

    the first MPV to a public that was

    hungry for novelty, the effect was

    immediate.

    Cars for life and livingMore than 190,000 Espacefrom 1984 to 1991As the worlds first real MPV, the

    Espace was a turning point in the

    history of family cars. The car was

    presented to the very enthusiasticpress in April 1984 as a comfortable

    living room on wheels, a place for

    relaxing. Imagine, at that time, a car

    that could carry up to 7 people

    thanks to its 2 or 3 rows of inde-

    pendent seats. Freely adjustable,

    one could choose between transportfunctionality or, in more relaxed

    mode, pivot the seats to a sitting-

    room configuration. The rear could

    instantly be transformed into a vast

    loading space. The Espace combined

    the advantages of a light utility

    vehicle with those of a touring sedan.When standing still, five of the back

    seats could be removed, or three

    left in to create a sitting room by

    turning the front seats around. A

    brilliant idea, perfectly in keeping

    with slogan: cars for life and living.

    The windows were also exceptionallylarge which helped make the car a

    real living-space.

    After it was unveiled on 7 November 1983 at the Aubevoye technical centre,production started in 1984

    The Espace was the product of colla-

    boration between Renault and Matra.

    Renault took care of the mechanical

    and technical issues, while Matra,

    which had designed the original body

    shell architecture, the bodywork

    made of polyester elements and the

    metal cage chassis structure. The

    Espace would be manufactured atMatra, with Renault taking care of

    the marketing. But for Renault, there

    was a considerable risk in launching

    a vehicle of this kind in the economic

    climate of the 1980s. Sales got off

    to a slow start, with barely nine cars

    sold in July, the first month following

    its commercial release. Was it

    because the car was too original?

    Was it the price? It cost the same

    as Renaults top-of-the-range

    Renault 25. Time had to pass before

    demand began to build up. But af ter

    its slow start, the Espace finallysucceeded in winning over families

    and gradually established itself as

    Renaults top-of-the-range car.

    Aprs une prsentation, le 7 novembre 1983 au Centre technique dAubevoye,la srie dmarre en mars 1984

    LEspace est le fruit de la collabo-ration entre Renault, pour la partiemcanique et technique puis, Matra,qui a conu la coque larchitectureoriginale, carrosserie en lmentspolyester et structure en chssiscage mtallique.

    LEspace sera fabriqu chezMatra, Renault se chargeant dela commercialisation. Mais, pourRenault, le risque est grand de lancerun tel vhicule dans le contextedes annes 1980. Et, les ventesdmarrent doucement, avec peine

    neuf exemplaires vendus en juillet,premier mois de commercialisation.Serait-ce la trop grande originalitdu vhicule ? Son prix ? La voiturecote le mme prix que le haut degamme de Renault, la Renault 25. Ilfaudra attendre pour que la demande

    devienne significative. Mais, aprsce dpart lent, l'Espace finira parconqurir les familles et s'imposeraprogressivement comme le haut degamme de Renault.

    Raving press

    The Espace got enthusiastic

    response from the specialist press,

    impressed by its cab-over-engine

    concept, the high driver position that

    enhanced the feeling of safety, the

    flat floor, spacious cabin, and

    unusually adjustable layout within a

    structure smaller than that of the

    R18. It was a car that offered versa-

    tility, comfort, driving pleasure,

    polyester bodywork, huge windows,cheerful colours and cloth-uphols-

    tered seats. With its TGV-inspired

    style and totally new cabin layout,

    the Espace did justice to its name.

    It pushed the idea of hatchback

    sedans to its limit by turning the

    interior into a single modular space

    that could take up to 7 passengers.The Espace had not traded in any of

    its performance for comfort.

    Motorists hailed its qualities in terms

    of safety but also its power, breaking

    ability, and grip on the road.

    spcialise. Elle est sduite parsa cabine avance, sa position deconduite haute qui donne une sen-sation de scurit, son plancherplat, son habitabilit et sa modularitrecord dans un gabarit infrieur celui d'une R 18.

    Vhicule polyvalent, confort, agr-

    ment de conduite, carrosserie enpolyester, normes surfaces vitrespuis, gaiet des coloris ainsi quede ses tissus de siges. Avec sonstyle inspir du TGV, lEspace portebien son nom puisquil propose uneorganisation totalement nouvelle delhabitacle. Il pousse jusquau bout

    la logique lance avec les berlinesbicorps, et transforme lintrieur enun seul espace amnageable pouraccueillir jusqu 7 passagers.

    LEspace na rien sacrifi de sesperformances au confort. Les auto-mobilistes soulignent ses qualits enmatire de scurit mais aussi sa

    tenue de route, sa puissance et sonfreinage.

    Launchingthe Espace

    Interior layout

    The car was released on the market

    in July, in two versions with a

    1,995 cm3110 hp carburettor engine:

    the 2000 GTS and the 2000 TSE.

    The 2000 TSE in addition came with

    a roof rack, a spoiler with flood lights

    under the front bumper, 14-inch light

    alloy rims, electric wing mirrors,

    remote door-lock control, and high-

    quality upholstery (fabric for the GTS)

    and carpet. Future buyers could

    choose between opaque or metallic

    colours, with the grained surface of

    the roof and sill panel in a different

    shade. Opaque colours included 163

    Beige Atlas (with Brown roof and sill

    panel) and 967 Green Yucca (roof

    and sill panel in Grey). Varnished

    metallic colours were: 174 Cinnamon

    Brown (roof and sill panel in Brown),

    742 Red Cornaline (Brown roof and

    sill panel), 447 Bleu Islande (roof

    and sill panel in Grey), and 647

    Turbo diesel Espace models came

    out in December. The Turbo D and

    Turbo DX models were fitted with a

    2,068 cm388 hp engine.

    These versions were recognisable

    by their prominent grille and

    lengthened front shield.

    Espace improves with Phase 2

    In January 1988, the EspacePhase 2 was introduced with

    modified extremities and rounder

    headlamps.

    The grille was 10cm longer (4.36m)

    and more prominent, while a spoiler

    accompanied the front bumper on

    production models throughout the

    range. The tailgate was thicker androunder.

    The range also underwent techni-cal changes starting with four dif-

    ferent engines:

    the 1,995 cm3 engine with 103hp carburettor in the 2000 GTS

    and 2000 TSE (J6R engine);

    the 1,995 cm3120 hp injectionengine in the TXE injection and

    2000-1 injection (J7R engine);the 2,165 cm3 110 hp injection

    engine in the TXE injection and

    2000-1 injection (J7T engine);

    Then in June 1985, an up-market

    version (E3 ) of fuel as well as diesel

    models was released, called 2000-

    1, with reference to Stanley

    Kubricks film, 2001: A Space

    Odyssey. In these models, the back

    wheel arches were covered by

    armrests with storage spaces.

    The Fuego front driveshaft was

    replaced by that of the Renault 25.

    The real innovation was the intro-

    duction of the Quadra: a four-

    wheel drive vehicle with a synthetic

    material ultra-light propeller shaft,

    and an excess weight of only 75 kg.Though its performance was the

    same, the improved adhesion was

    considerable. Inside the vehicle,

    extra anchorage made it possible

    to push back the seats in the back

    row a bit further thanks to a new

    tailgate that was deeper and more

    rounded. New upholstery rounded

    off all finishes.

    Espace QUADRA

    The great innovation in 1988was the Quadra version with its

    permanent all-wheel drive. It

    included automatic torque distri-

    bution between the front and back

    axles through viscous coupling,

    enhanced with the fitting of spe-

    cial new Michelin MXT4 tires. This

    gave the Espace excellent roaddynamics in all weather condi-

    tions, with the back wheels com-

    pensating for any loss of traction

    in the front axle, thus giving thevehicle much greater stability with

    a 65/35 % distribution. Added to

    the technical advantages of a final

    rear drive viscous coupler rotating

    at the speed of the engine, there

    were two series of disks (one for

    the front, and one for the back).

    The whole system, housed in asilicon oil pan, ensured the gra-

    dual transfer of torque to the axle

    whose wheels were turning more

    towards the right to make room for

    the composite propeller shaft tun-

    nel. Finally, the break system had

    ventilated disks in the front and

    solid disks at the back (255 mm

    in diameter). The front and back

    suspension spring calibration wasconsiderably tightened.

    Two new engines were available

    for the Quadra versions in addi-

    tion to the previous engines: a

    1,995 cm3(J7R type) with electro-

    nic fuel injection, reaching 120 hp

    at 5,500 RPM, and a 2,165 cm3

    engine (110 hp at 5,000 RPM).

    At the end of 1989, the ABS option

    is introduced on its two-wheel

    drives as well as permanent all-

    wheel drive Quadra versions (with

    a Bosch system).

    It was without a doubt the arrival

    of the Quadra version that wouldset this generation apart. Produc-

    tion volumes of the Renault Espace

    Quadra the first French sedan

    with permanent all-wheel drive

    reached 25 units per day (15% of

    the total range).

    slowly (i.e. that had better adhe-sion). This transmission was en-

    hanced by a 5-speed gearbox. The

    new transmission system required

    some structural modifications. The

    sub-frame had a platform with a

    redesigned gearbox tunnel that did

    Particular care has been taken to

    the design of the new Espace. Mo-

    dular interior, comfort on board...

    the first real upgrade of the Espacewas no mere aesthetic adapta-

    tion to comply with customers

    tastes. Renault raised the bar and

    turned the Espace into a real top-

    of-the-range sedan. Moving the

    car upmarket meant rethinking its

    bodywork and interior layout, but

    also upgrading its engine qualityand performance.

    Innovation in terms of interiormodularity included specific front

    and back seats, two passenger

    seats with headrests and reclining

    backs, and inner seats that could

    pivot. The seats in the second

    and third rows had become more

    modular with rails that optimised

    their travel distance within the

    available space (included in the

    upmarket package). A new anchor

    is positioned at the rear and the

    The Espace II unveiled at the Gene-

    va Motor Show in 1991 (codename

    J63) had a smoother contour with

    more streamlined shapes. It wasa modern, more dynamic car. On

    the outside, the differences were

    noticeable, starting with a serious

    facelift in front, with a rounded

    grille in the Renault style with new

    lamps. Its radiator grill was now

    a more aerodynamic perforated

    plate. The bumper was also morerounded and sat higher thanks to a

    The Espace II went on the market

    in 1991, with over 65,500 units

    already sold by 1992. Between

    1991 and 1997, 316,518 units

    were produced. The 400,000 mi-

    lestone was reached in 1994, and

    ROMO 3 Start ing in 1984, with annual sales

    continually on the rise (nearly

    50,000 cars in 1988), and the

    Alpine plant joined Matra as a

    second production unit. But the

    new J63 model, the Espace II,

    would be manufactured in a brand-new factory built in Romorantin:

    the Romo 3 Centre. This semi-

    automated manufacturing plant

    occupied 18,792 m2on a property

    of nearly 100,000 m2. Romo 3

    consisted of four main workshops.

    The chassis workshop built the

    machine-welded steel framework,the metrology section was res-

    ponsible for checking the dimen-

    sions of the structures and com-

    pleted bodies as well as doors and

    tailgates, the hot-dip galvanising

    workshop used a process that op-

    timised the anti-corrosion protec-

    tion of the chassis and increased

    the mechanical capacities of the

    structure as well as its resistance

    to torsion, and lastly, the metal

    line assembled the closures on

    the structure and stuck on compo-

    nents of composite materials*.

    Even more accomplished, the

    Espace III was introduced a

    few weeks after reaching the

    500,000 unit milestone, and could

    pride itself on being the leader in

    its category. For this new edition,

    Renault had decided to upgradethe model both in terms of aesthe-

    tics and mechanics, and a longer

    version, called Grand Espace,

    was released in January 1998.

    Although the design of the Espace

    III showed continuity with previous

    versions, its size became impres-

    sive The designer had clearly

    intended to streamline the shape

    and the side panels were more po-

    lished, with wraparound contours.

    The Espace III was 4.517 m long,

    1.81 m wide and 1.69 m high

    (+75 mm with roof rack). The roof

    no longer had a granular aspect

    but was much smoother, painted in

    the same colour as the bodywork.

    The rear windows were stretched

    out, giving a much more robust

    Espace - Still the best placeto be on earth Espace III, thinking big

    2000 was the year of phase 2!

    It included the start of electrical

    multiplexing (speedometer, immo-

    biliser, wiper unit at the back)

    and an overhaul for all of the ver-

    sions. The new 2.2 dCi 115 hp die-

    sel engine was introduced, repla-

    cing the 2.2 DT 110 hp. All versions

    got a facelift and upgrade.

    Espace IIIand its special editionsThe Race and Taylor Made spe-

    cial editions arrived after January

    2001. In 1999, Espace III broke

    the annual production record with

    71,200 units. At the end of 2001,

    it accounted for 18.7 % of all up-

    market minivan sales in Europe. In

    France, it was half of that market.

    In total, more than 365,200 Es-

    pace III were produced from 1996

    to 2002. By comparison, a total of

    866,405 Espace cars were manu-factured from 1984 to 2001.

    three engine options for the Espace

    III. For fuel, there was a 4-cylindre

    2 litre 115 hp engine, and a 3 litre

    170 hp V6 of which the packaging

    under the hood was similar to that

    of the Laguna. The third was the

    2.2 litre 115 hp Diesel Turbo with12 valves. These engines also

    came with new gearboxes. The 2

    litre engine had a manual JC5 or

    an automatic AD8 gearbox. The

    V6 was combined with an automa-

    tic gearbox. The 2.2 litre D Turbo

    got a triple-tab PK gearbox. The

    automatic gearbox control leverwas located on the steering wheel.

    The Espace III underwent its first

    upgrade in January 1998. Phase 1

    included changes to the RTE, RXE

    and RXT finishes and the launch

    of the Grand Espace. In July, the

    2.2 DT went from 113 to 110 hp,

    and in the September, the wholerange was fitted with wide-field

    wing mirrors, radiofrequency

    remote controls and retractable

    headrests at the back. In Octo-

    ber, the fuel range was modified

    with the 2.0 16S 140 hp engine

    and the 3.0 l V6-24 valve engine

    combined with an auto-adaptivegearbox with floor control. Various

    special editions came out in 1999,

    with the launching of the Initiale

    finish, heated front seats, and sun

    blinds. The Fidji, based on the RXE

    with Carminat navigation, had side

    airbags, alloy rims, two manually

    operated sun roofs, a heat-insu-

    lating windshield, and sun blinds.

    The Cyclades was based on the

    RXE with 4 airbags, air-conditio-

    ning and a radio. The Aliz came

    with air-control, sun blinds, 6008

    radio and fog lights.

    2002: Renault, car-maker An Espace made entirely by Renault

    Following Avantime, Vel Satis, and

    the Talisman concept car, daring

    design was key.

    Renault decided to produce and

    assemble the Espace IV at San-

    douville. It would have the same

    platform as the Laguna II and Vel

    Satis, with sheet-metal bodywork.

    Composite materials are replaced

    by steel plate and aluminium. A

    universal platform with horizontal

    frames and back and front axles

    was a common floor-assembly

    process now used.

    The Espace IV and Grand Espace

    were assembled released on the

    market in September 2002.

    The contour of the new Espace ex-

    pressed its unique personality and

    clearly put it in the large MPV seg-

    ment. The grille was narrower and

    in 2006, with phase 2 and the first

    restyling, changes mainly concer-ned the front bumper, headlights

    and taillights, as well as interior

    finishes.

    At the 2010 Paris Motor Show,

    the world discovered an Espace

    with a new front look. Everything

    was in fact restyled in phase 3:

    hood, grille, bumper, integratedLED lights and new colours were

    available, including pearl white

    and dark brown. New features in-

    side included the seat upholstery,

    colours, steering wheel, display

    and GPS combined with a rever-

    sing camera.

    There were also new engine fea-

    tures, like the 2 litre 170 hp turbo

    with a 6-speed manual gearbox,

    and emissions reduced by 10%

    to 204 g of CO2/km; for diesel,

    the 2 litre dCI came in 3 power

    versions: dCi 130, dCI 150, and

    dCi 175 hp. The last two offered a

    choice between a manual or auto-

    matic 6-speed gearbox. In 2012,

    phase 4 introduced a new designer

    look for Renault and significant

    reductions in CO2emissions (up to

    20g less). On the engine side, the

    2.0 dCi with 130 or 150 hp (and 175hp in automatic) was still there, but

    now coupled with a 6-speed gear-

    box with CO2emissions reduced to

    150g/km (20g less). The same en-

    gine was available with a 5-speed

    automatic gearbox, for CO2 emis-

    sions of up to 169g/km.

    Three finishes were available in thecatalogue: 25 years, Alyum

    and the upper-range Initiale,

    which included a reversing ca-

    mera, a rear screen that opened,

    six seats and perforated leather

    upholstery, together with electric

    adjustment of the front seats and

    17-inch Monterey alloy rims. Alarge sun roof came as an option

    and gave exceptional luminosity to

    the cabin.

    Espace was quite a massive car

    but, in fact, its no bigger than a

    family saloon and its very easy to

    drive straight away. The very goodhandling, quality of the suspen-

    sion and high level of comfort are

    really astonishing. For me, Renault

    Espace is a car that can be driven

    in a relaxed, family way or even

    more sportily, if you want to.

    Le regarddAlain Prost surlEspace Renault : A chaque fois que je remonte

    bord dEspace, je revis cette sen-

    sation dtre dans un vhicule part. Aucun autre monospace,

    SUV ou 4x4 ne me semble offrir

    la mme ambiance et le mme

    comportement. Cest une exp-

    rience compltement diffrente.

    On pourrait avoir limpression

    dun vhicule immense. Mais en

    fait, Espace nest pas plus en-combrant quune berline fami-

    liale et sa facilit de conduite est

    immdiate. Sa trs bonne tenue de

    route, ses qualits de suspension

    et de confort sont vraiment ton-

    nantes. Pour moi, Renault Espace

    est la fois une voiture qui peut

    tre mene de faon familiale et cool ou de faon plus dyna-

    mique, si lon a envie.

    Olympic Games in Albertville. In

    this respect, Renault was also theofficial car for the Olympic Torch

    The concept of MPV combined

    with F1 engineering. The expe-

    rimental Espace F1 vehicle was

    designed in 1994 to celebrate the

    10th anniversary of the collabora-

    tion between Renault and Matra,

    with Renault manufacturing theengines for the Williams Formula

    1 team. A 3.5 litre V10 800 horse-

    power F1 engine was installed in

    the centre of the MPV. The result:

    0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds...

    The F1 Espace shown at the 1994

    Paris Motor Show had the basic

    contours of an Espace II, with a

    10V RS5 engine identical to the

    one used in the Williams FW15C,

    combined with a semi-automatic

    twenty cars drove across France

    (5,500 km in 57 stages). A Torch

    vehicle was designed especially

    to carry the Olympic Flame on this

    journey. This enhanced Espace II to-day is part of the Renault collection.

    in Switzerland, this quirky spider

    version was built to present VIPs

    to the crowd at the 24 Hours of Le

    Mans event in 1998. The vehicle

    was driven by a PRV V6 194 hp

    engine.

    6-speed gearbox. The chassis was

    made of carbon, with an aluminium

    honeycomb structure and graphite

    bodywork. It had four ventilated

    carbon disks on the breaks. The

    tires were from Michelin. Four

    occupants were accommodated inbucket seats. The paintwork was

    yellow with sill panels and bottom

    of doors in carbon. Performance:

    0 to 200 km/h in 6.9 s; maximum

    speed: more than 300 km/h on

    the track. Two copies were made.

    The one that was used as a model

    for track exhibitions is kept in the

    Matra museum in Romorantin. The

    other is in the Renault collection.
