Le viLLage de SamoiS Sur Seine accueille sur l’île du Berceau la 33e édition du festival Django Reinhardt, rendez-vous incontournable des fans de tous les jazz. Samois va une nouvelle fois rendre hommage au plus illustre des guitaristes qui avait choisi notre village pour une retraite paisible avant d’autres projets musi-caux malheureusement brutalement interrompus.

à l’heure où les responsables, à tous niveaux, éprouvent les plus grandes difficultés à se réunir autour de projets communs, le fes-tival reçoit chaque année plus de 35 nationalités qui communient autour d’une même passion, la musique, sous le regard du maître des lieux, Django Reinhardt.

Tous les plus grands interprètes du swing manouche se sont pro-duits à Samois. Les 16 000 spectateurs qui se pressent chaque année sur ce petit coin de terre, coincé entre Seine et forêt, ne s’y trompent pas. Il règne ici une atmosphère unique, une magie particulière source de concerts souvent exceptionnels.

Le festival Django Reinhardt et son programmateur, Sébastien Vidal, vous proposent cette année encore un plateau ambitieux. Le jazz manouche est roi bien sûr mais nous irons entre Balkans, Liban, Afrique, Corée, Cuba, États-Unis… pour un voyage initiatique, sans quitter l’île du Berceau.

Avant de laisser place à la musique, un très grand merci à l’ensemble de nos partenaires, à tous nos jeunes –et moins jeunes– bénévoles qui se mobilisent une partie de l’année pour faire vivre cet évé-nement 5 jours durant et bien sûr à la Municipalité de Samois, actrice incontournable du festival qui porte cette manifestation depuis maintenant 44 ans !!

Rendez-vous du mercredi 27 juin au dimanche 1er juillet dans cette place mythique du jazz d’aujourd’hui. Bon Festival 2012.

2012 ThiS year The viLLage of SamoiS Sur Seine hosts the 33rd edition of the Django Reinhardt Festival, which has become a ‘must’ on the jazz calendar. As ever Samois pays tribute once again to the illustrious guitarist who chose our village as a peaceful retreat from the hubbub of new musical encounters in a career which unfortunately was only too soon brutally interrupted by his untimely death.

Even in a period when there are ever greater obstacles in mobilising the various actors around the organisation of such cultural events, the Festival keeps the flame alive by inviting more than 35 nationalities to unite around the same passion for the unmistakeable style of music inspired by its maestro, Django Reinhardt.

All the great artists of gipsy swing have at some time or other performed at Samois. The faithful 16 thousand or so spectators who throng every year to this tiny island, tucked between the Seine river and the forest, all bear witness to the unique atmosphere and magic that inevitably sparks truly exceptional musical experiences.

The Django Reinhardt Festival together with jazz-radio presenter Sébastien Vidal have come up with a rather ambitious programme this year. Gipsy jazz holds pride of place as usual, while at the same time the festival features excursions to the Balkans, Lebanon, Africa, Korea, Cuba and the USA, all without ever once physically leaving the island.

Before we let the music speak for itself, we would like to thank all of our partners as well as our older and younger volunteers who devote so much of their time throughout the year to make sure that the 5-day festival is a huge success. Finally let us not forget our debt to the Samois Village Municipality, without which the last 44 years of the festival would have been impossible!!

We look greatly forward to seeing you all between Wednesday 27 June and Sunday 1st July on the usual site of this now legendary meeting place of the jazz scene of today. Happy Festival 2012 to you all.

iL y a une TradiTion à SamoiS en fin de feS-TivaL : à la dernière note lancée par l’ultime groupe programmé, débute un autre concert, celui des péniches qui quittent l’île du Berceau pour un « au revoir » en attendant l’année prochaine. Pour les festivaliers, c’est le feu d’artifice du Festival. Pour des artistes comme James Carter, une occasion de répondre, saxophone en bouche, sur les rives de l’îlot, aux cornes de brumes des adieux. Un moment unique à l’image de la magie ressentie tout au long de cinq jours de festivités inoubliables.Samois est un no man’s land dans tous les sens du terme. Un cadre idyllique, une communauté de bénévoles qui se dévoue sans compter avec convivialité, une diversité et universalité de programmation, un public de tous horizons souvent venu de loin, et avant tout la passion, créent chaque année le charme charnel qui nous lie à cet événement.Des souvenirs et anecdotes, les artistes vous en citeront cent milles ! Ils vivent ici un moment exceptionnel et n’hésitent jamais à animer de leur art les légendaires campings de Samois et de Samoreau où se retrouvent les musiciens amateurs du monde entier pour des « beufs » mémorables.Depuis 1968, notre festival a évolué, s’est renouvelé et a reçu plusieurs générations d’artistes qui ont souvent fait leur début dans le grand bain du jazz sur la scène de Samois.Le festival Django Reinhardt aime les mélanges, les métissages, croise et décroise les générations, les influences, le jazz dont les frontières, sans cesse en mouvement, repoussent toujours les limites de ses contours.Ici commence le règne de Django, guitariste aux mille influences, artiste jazzman européen, inventeur d’un jazz unique tant il est en prise avec le monde. Alors, pour lui rendre hommage, nous devons rendre compte de l’état d’une musique toujours en équilibre. Nous devons ouvrir les bras aux jeunes générations, celle du Django Club ou celle de Sonny Amati Schmitt, fils de Dorado, 16 ans. Il faut aller voir du côté du French Quarter et prendre le pouls de la Nouvelle-Orléans avec le mythique Dr John. Il faut accueillir Sharon Jones, reine de la soul et ancienne gardienne de prison. Il faut saluer Django et faire de la place pour la clarinette Klezmer de Yom, les cuivres des fanfares d’Europe de l’Est, les cordes de Sylvain Luc, d’Al Di Meola ou de Mike Stern… Il faut accueillir quelques princes en ce royaume du jazz manouche comme Stochelo Rosenberg ou Biréli Lagrène et découvrir que leur musique va tellement au-delà… Il faut confronter la trompette d’Ibrahim Maalouf à l’Orient, à l’Espagne et au rock. Il faut être jazz à 100% et ne jamais oublier que ce sont les artistes qui, sans cesse, redessinent cette musique pour le plus grand plaisir de tous.

Il faut tout cela… pour vibrer, pour l’étincelle et l’enthousiasme par-tagés chaque année !Bon festival, bonne découverte.

TradiTionaLLy aT The end of The SamoiS feSTivaL, the last note played by the last group is a signal for the barges that were moored there to head off from the Island only to return the following year. For the festivalgoers that means it’s time for the Festival fireworks display. For artists like James Carter, it is sign to play once more in response to the natural sounds of the site. For all of us it is a time to look back over the unforget-table magical moments of the five-day festival.Samois is a sort of haven in more senses than one. There’s the idyllic setting, the community of keen dedi-cated volunteers, the diverse widely appealing line-up, the multinational audience from far and wide and finally the passion which all combine to create that almost tangible charm that brings us all together. The performers have many a tale to tell about the festival and most can be found jamming along with other amateurs of the festival in the legendary Samo-reau campsite. Since 1968, our festival has grown and evolved to welcome several generations of performers some of whom actually made their first appearance in the jazz world on the Samois festival stage itself.The Django Reinhardt Festival loves blending generations, influences and musical frontiers that are incessantly on the move.Here abides the spirit of Django, the inspired guitarist, European jazzman and originator of a unique genre. In honour of this great artist, we have tried to strike a musical balance in the choice of performers. The festi-val features on the one hand the younger generation represented by Django Club and Dorado’s sixteen-years old son Sonny Amati Schmitt. On the other you will hear the legendary Dr John from the French Quarter of New Orleans and Sharon Jones, former pri-son guard turned queen of soul. In Django’s honour we will be listening to the Klezmer clarinet played by Yom, the brass fanfares of Eastern Europe and the guitars of Sylvain Luc, Al Di Meola and Mike Stern. Pride of place goes to those princes of the gipsy jazz world, Stochelo Rosenberg and Biréli Lagrène, this time letting us discover another side of their talent. There will also be fascinating encounters with the Orient, Spain and Rock and the talented trumpet player Ibrahim Maalouf. In fact we have a one hundred percent jazz line-up with a set of performers who are relentlessly reinventing their music for our greater pleasure.

That’s the least we could do to keep the flame of our yearly celebration alive!Enjoy the festival.

Après avoir commencé sa carrière en Argentine à l’âge de 16 ans avec un trio de blues, Gonzalo Bergara découvre Django : cette révélation marquera le guitariste qui décide de partir aux États-Unis, où il jouera aux côtés de nombreux musiciens, de Manhattan Transfer à John Jorgenson en passant par Howard Alden ou Sylvie Vartan !Gonzalo Bergara crée un jazz aux mille influences : mu-sique classique, jazz manouche, traditionnels argentins et standards américains se retrouvent dans sa musique. Le guitariste s’entoure de son quartet californien pour l’ouverture de notre 33e édition, sous le signe du voyage et de la fraternité !

After getting an early start to his career in a blues trio in Argentina at the age of 16, Gonzalo Bergara was first intro-duced to the music of Django. This was an encounter that would make an indelible impression on him. He decided to head for the States where he would play alongside the likes of Manhattan Transfer, John Jorgenson, Howard Alden or even our very own Sylvie Vartan ! Gonzalo Bergara’s jazz draws on a patchwork of influences, including classical music gipsy jazz, traditional Argentinean music and American standards. The guitarist will be backed up by his Californian quartet for this opening act of the 33rd festival. Not to be missed under any circumstances !

Le guitariste a également remporté d’immenses succès dans de récentes collaborations, à l’image de son duo avec Sylvain Luc. Biréli ne joue pas la musique… il la vit ! Inten-sément, subtilement, complètement. Il nous fait le plaisir de revenir sur l’île du Berceau avec son tout nouveau projet qu’il présente ce soir en avant-première d’un disque qui sortira chez Universal à la rentrée. Un Biréli plus électrique et plus groove, un nouvel homme, en quartet !

Biréli Lagrène is beyond all doubt one of Django’s worthiest heirs. Avec un père qui fut complice de Django et Stéphane Grap-pelli, Boulou et Elios avaient de qui tenir ! Les frères terribles du jazz manouche ont parcouru le monde et ont joué avec les plus grands. C’est Boulou, l’aîné, qui apprendra la guitare à son frère après un début de carrière plus que prometteur : à 13 ans, il jouait en première partie de John Coltrane !Récemment décoré de l’ordre des Arts et Lettres, nos deux chevaliers du swing s’emparent de la scène de l’île du Berceau. Et pour notre festival, les frères Ferré invitent le contrebas-siste Pierre Boussaguet, protégé de Ray Bryant et complice de Diana Krall, Wynton Marsalis, Clark Terry ou encore Monty Alexander… Amitié et complicité au rendez-vous !

Having a father who played alongside Django and Stéphane Grappelli, Boulou and Elios both had a pretty good start in life ! These two gipsy jazz siblings have gone all around the world in the company of the great names in music. Elder brother Boulou taught his younger brother the guitar, while already enjoying his own promising career. At 13 years old he was playing on the same bill as John Coltrane ! These two ‘Sultans of Swing’ were recently decorated with the French Order of Arts and Letters, and will be gracing our stage in the company of double bass player Pierre Boussaguet, Ray Bryant’s talented protégé and sideman with Diana Krall, Wynton Marsalis, Clark Terry and Monty Alexander. Brotherhood and complicity will be the order of the day !

Citons parmi eux Elvin Jones, Wynton Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgwater, Billy Cobham ou encore Marcus Miller…Avec son dernier projet « Organic », Sylvain Luc s'entoure de « vieux copains » pour un album aux reflets d'enfance et de souvenirs… Aux côtés de Thierry Elliez et André Cecca-relli, le guitariste offre un jazz teinté de fusion et de rock, mais aussi de ballades… Le voyage commence.

In a career spanning thirty years, Sylvain Luc has made his mark as one of the greatest of Europe’s guitarists. There isn’t enough space here to list all of the artists that he has appeared with, but they include Elvin Jones, Wynton Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgwater, Billy Cobham and even Marcus Miller.In this new project called “Organic”, Sylvain Luc has appealed to a couple of “old buddies” to come up with a new album reflecting a nostalgic return to bygone days. With the help of Thierry Elliez and André Ceccarelli, the gui-tarist will be performing more rock and fusion influenced jazz, though there will be the odd ballad for good measure. Aged only 16, Sonny Amati Schmitt is one of gipsy jazz’s young hopefuls to keep a sharp eye on! His dexterity and maturity have already ranked him high on the list of Django Reinhardt’s successors. He couldn’t really be better placed, given that his father is none other than the internationally acclaimed guitarist and composer Dorado Schmitt! Here he is playing in a quartet, a rising star in the guitar world that hasn’t had his last word yet !

LA MÉLODIE DES CHOSES 16h00JooZ - LeS eLeveS du CenTre deS muSiQueS didier LoCKWood Nous démarrons la journée avec un partenariat que nous voulions monter avec l’école de musique de Didier Lockwood. C’est à Dammarie-lès-Lys que le violoniste a monté ce lieu d’apprentissage. On y retrouve les meilleurs professionnels reconvertis, durant une année scolaire, en professeur émérite pour former les nouvelles générations de jazzmen. De Fiona Monbet à Thomas Encho, ce sont des dizaines de jeunes musiciens qui chaque année sortent de cette institution. Pour la promotion 2012 le groupe Jooz s'inscrit dans une fusion des genres. Un goût prononcé pour le jazz, le rock et le métal ; des rythmiques lourdes.

We kick off the afternoon with a concert in partnership with Didier Lockwood’s nearby school of music. Based in Dammarie-lès-Lys, this new school is teeming with young jazz talent trained by veteran jazz musicians. The young Cuban Roberto Fonseca has been earning a reputation worldwide and comes up with a musical blend somewhere between jazz, Cuban music, hip-hop and African traditional music.The set features singer Mamani Keïta from Mali. Strolling in Samois Within a stone’s throw from the entrance of the festival, at number 3 of the “Bas Samois” street, a plaque reminds the jazz lovers of the house where Django Reinhardt lived and died. The gypsy guitar player (1910-1953) was buried in the village cemetery.

Mass A muical mass will be celebrated on Sunday 1st july, 11 am, by father James Prieux at the Saint Hilaire - Saint Loup Church in Samois.
