MMAAHHIILLAA VVIIDDYYAALLAAYYAA DDEEGGRREEEE CCOOLLLLEEGGEE HHIISSTTOORRYY

The year 1895 marked the beginning of a new era in women’s education in Lucknow.

The founders of Mahila College realized that to make women self-reliant, sufficient and

confident, schooling was essential. With this objective, 125 years old prestigious and largest

women educational institution of North India came into existence. The college had its modest

beginning in a rented house in Aminabad in 1895 and was named as The Hindu Girls' School'

with nine girls on its roll. The school's own building at its present premise was inaugurated on

March 9th, 1921 by the then Education Minister of United Province of Agra & Oudh, Sri C.Y.

Chintamani. The name of The Hindu Girls' School was changed to Mahila Vidyalaya on

February 26, 1922.

In a society governed by age old customs and conservative attitude towards women, the

school was bound to face many challenges. The founders of the college had evinced keen

interest in women education that would help them think on their own, lead a better life and

promote the welfare of the society. During the colonial era the college aimed to promote

value based education in order to develop overall growth of personality of students and ready

to face the new challenges in life. Students of Mahila College showed active participation in

also worth noting when it comes to the progress of this college. She was a strong advocate of

women education.
