My dissertation was related to a stage. I’vechosen to renovate a rural building to make itsuitable for farm holidays. In the first part I’veexamined the relevant national and urban lawsto prove legal conformity. I analysed the pastand actual configuration of the building tounderstand the structure, adaptations andapplied technologies of the building during itslife. Also, I analysed the needs and possibilitiesto make adaptations in the old structure, madeof natural stone and wood. The renovation planstarted with a thorough law examinationregarding comfort and aesthetics whenimplementing the various functional facilitiesand areas for agriturism. Renovation involvedthe structure, as well as thermal and acousticproperties of the building and technologies tomake it a comfortable building.

The goal of this project was to collect and findways to fulfill the requirements regarding thethermal distribution throughout a building, theindoor air quality and the visual and acousticcomfort. The building, a mixed-use building, wasthe same as the one in the previous project. Theproject was carried out with the same small teamof students. The requirements were processedusing Excel. First, we defined the climate data andrelevant architectural information. Next, wezoned the building in parts with differentrequirements. We verified the thermaltransmittance and the non-condensation points ineach part of the building, after which wecalculated the entire dispersion of the buildingand the solar-thermal contribution. We used thesedata to design and size the various plants for eachzone and function. Finally we designed the roomswith particular acoustic and visual requirements, like shops, offices and meeting rooms.

The course aims at introducing concepts ofstructural safety, as well as theory and designtechniques, both applied for steel structuresand reinforced concrete ones. For theadmission to the exam I designed twostructures without using structural designsoftware : one made of steel and the other onemade of reinforced concrete.1 - Steel Structure: The assigned theme for thedesign was an industrial shed. The shed wascomposed of 8 spans of 4.8 by 22.5 m, while theroofing is realized with a Warren type truss at8.3 m height.1 - Reinforced Concrete Structure:The assignedtheme was a building for offices and shops. Thebuilding had 6 floors: the ground floor, 3.6 mhigh, had three shops, a staircase and anentrance; the other five floors gave space tothree different groups of offices.

In a small team, we planned a civil building unitwith several different functional areas. Thestarting point was formed by the 3 southernbuildings of the previous Town Planning project,.We turned them into a multifunctional building. The 3 ground floors were connected by acommercial gallery with a shop and twosupermarkets. Its roofing has been designed as anew open external ground floor with buildingentrances, shops and overhead pedestriancrossings to the two levels of the parking area.On top of it, the buildings had three more floors;in the central building we decided to placeoffices, in the other two apartments. Thestructure was a mix of two different parts: thesteel structure of the commercial gallery and hiscantilever roof and the reinforced concretestructure of the buildings. The group plannedeven all technological systems related toarchitecture, structure and plants.

During this project I applied and verified thetheoretical concepts from the lectures andmade individual design proposals fitting in agiven environment and fullfilling certainrequired functions. Design purpose was torealize the Gate House of an architecture expoin Florence. Modular grid, proportion, symmetry and wide spaces are the fundamentsof the design. The Gate House had to containseveral functions related to the expo activitiesand to the outdoor exposition area. The fourmain functional areas are :- Visitors Area (entrance,shops,restaurants,etc.)- Education Area (library , classes, hall etc. )- Expo Administration (offices, meeting rooms)- Support Area (warehouses, technical rooms etc.)

The placement of the four main functionalareas has been studied to create a balancedseparation and integration between all of them.

The course concerns the instruments to planand project urban modifications and theirimplementation and management. The teamwork project consisted of two parts:1. Analysis of San Casciano’s actual urban

infrastructure and character in the light ofthe town’s historical development. Duringthis part we analysed the town’sinfrastructural evolution (roads, buildings, facilities etc). Next, the team studied someinfrastructure improvements.

2. Design of a new quarter in a selected areaof the town. The plan concerned therealization of a new part of the town next toand in harmony with the historical areas ofthe town. The new quarter has beenplanned respecting the urban laws and themunicipal building laws.

The project was aimed at providing a firstapproach to the architectural composition andstyle decisions. During the course I havedeveloped initial sketches in answer to thevarious requirements that I collected regardingthe houses and the external with common area. The purpose was to realize a residential districtcomposed of two different kinds of buildings anda private area for residents which forms afunctional connection between the buildings, theparking area and the space outside. Thearchitecture was developed by considering:- A modular grid, with serial and proportional repetition and symmetry- The place of the project- The architectural space: the functional organisation of space- The relation between architecture , structures and systems: the role of technology-Materials and colours
