A NOTE FROM FATHER MILOTA Dear Parishioners of Visitation Parish, Praised be Jesus Christ!

D uring Masses last weekend we announced that Bishop Conlon has appointed me to serve as pastor at Saint Petronille Parish in Glen Ellyn beginning June 19th. I am truly grateful for the warm welcome and example of faith you have given me during my short time here at Visitation. Since the mystery of the Visitation is the only appearance in the Bible of Saint Elizabeth, I consider it Divine Providence that Visitation parish was the first parish I served after my mother, Elizabeth Milota, died last July.

I will complete my term as administrator at Visitation on May 1st, but Father Greg has graciously allowed me to continue to reside at the rectory until the third week of May when I will travel to Rome to serve as Spiritual Director to about 40 seminarians who will be on retreat there. I will always remember your many kindnesses to me during my time here and I will remember Visitation Parish in my thoughts and prayers often. I beg your prayers as I begin this new assignment in June.

May Almighty God bless you and keep you. In Christ, Father Thomas Milota

NEWS FROM THE P.I.T.

PRIEST IN TRAINING

By Father Michael Kearney

By Father Michael Kearney There are many things that stand out in the Palm Sunday Gospel reading (for it is a long

reading). But one of the most profound moments is when Pontius Pilate makes the people choose between Jesus or Barabbas.

I n a way, the choice Pontius Pilate puts before the Jews is a choice given us today! Let me explain. Pontius Pilate brings before the Jewish people two men: Jesus, son of the Heavenly Father and Bar-abbas, whose name literally means son of the father (Bar = Son of the Abbas = Father). Pontius Pilate wants the people to choose who they will follow. Will they choose to follow Jesus Christ, the son of the Heavenly Father, or will they follow Bar-abbas, a son of a different father? (Matthew 27:21) Will they follow a man whose message stands for service and self-sacrifice (Jesus) or will they follow the man who is known as a zealot, murderer acting on his own desires and wants (Barabbas). Will they choose a life of holiness or will they choose a life of sin? This same choice is given to us today!

Whom will you choose? Will you choose Jesus

and live selflessly? Will you choose a life of sin

and live selfishly? N ot only are we confronted by this choice

on Palm Sunday, but we are reminded of this again on Good Friday as well! Let us aim during this Holy Week

to reaffirm our decision to choose the Lord,

to turn away from our sin, and live a life that is a gift to others.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK [April 15-EASTER SUNDAY, April 21]

Visitation Catholic Church Page Six—April 14, 2019

LIVING the

WORD

LIVING the

WORD

THIS WEEK’S FOCUS: RECONCILING HEAVEN AND EARTH, HUMANITY WITH GOD When Jesus—who was both truly human and truly divine—was humbly sacrificed on the cross for us, it was the ultimate act of reconciliation. As his disciples, we give of ourselves as people of reconciliation. FIRST READING In spite of my sufferings I am not disgraced. I am not put to shame (Isaiah 50:4-7). The Servant is One who brings consolation to the weary, even while he is the subject of terrible suffering. We will hear in the fourth song that he suffers to bring us for-giveness of our sins. It was never exactly clear who this figure was supposed to be during the Old Testament times. Jesus, through many of the things that he said, showed that he considered himself to be the fulfillment of this prophecy. In spite of the agony of the Servant, he remained obedient to the will of God. SECOND READING Christ emptied Himself, and God filled this emptiness with exaltation (Philippians 2:6-11). St. Paul teaches about Jesus who surrendered his pre-rogatives as God to serve us as a human. The ultimate degree of humility was to be obedient to the Father, even to the point of dying on the cross. We might think that this expression of humility was humiliating for Jesus, but he did not see it that way. he saw it as the full-est expression of his love and trust in the Father. God the Father responded to this trust by proclaiming Jesus as Lord, a title that affirms his divinity.

GOSPEL READING The account of Christ's passion according to Luke (Luke 22:14 — 23:56 [23:1-49]).

The Jewish leaders have to lie when they bring Jesus before Pilate (he is not concerned with their religious arguments) and accuse Jesus of opposing taxes paid to Caesar and making himself a king (both would be capital offenses under Roman law). Pilate is not convinced and sends him to Herod. Herod mocks him and dresses Jesus in resplendent garb (to humiliate Jesus) and then re-turns Jesus to Pilate. Pilate tells the people that he finds Jesus innocent. The people shout to crucify Jesus and to release the prisoner Barabbas. Pilate has Jesus flogged hoping their bloodlust would be satisfied but to no avail. Finally, Pilate gives in to their demands and hands Jesus over to be crucified. Simon, the Cyrenian is assigned to assist Jesus. Along the route Jesus meets a group of women who mourn and lament for him, and he consoles them. Jesus is crucified at the place of the Skull. Even as Jesus is being crucified, he asks his Father to forgive the very people who put him to death. The people call Jesus to save himself (the irony is that he was saving others in the very act of not saving himself). There were two criminals hanging in the place with him. One reviled him while the other (Good Thief) asks to join with Jesus in his kingdom. Jesus replies that he will be with him in Paradise that day. Darkness covers the whole land (a symbol of apparent triumph over darkness). The veil in the temple separated people from the holiness of God which was found in the Holy of Holies. With the death of Jesus, we can encounter that holiness everywhere upon the earth. Jesus is obedient until the last moment of his life, entrusting his Spirit into the Father’s hands. The centurion affirms what we heard in the trial before Pi-late, that Jesus was truly the Innocent One. Even those gathered for the spectacle recognized the travesty that occurred and beat their breasts to beg for forgiveness.

REFLECTION Jesus “did not regard equality with God something to be grasped” (Philippians 2:6). He “emptied himself” (2:7) and “humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” (2:8). He is the servant of whom Isaiah speaks. He gave himself to us as food and drink (John), out of love for us. Jesus’ journey from heaven to earth is what reconciled earth with heaven and humanity with God. By so doing he did God’s will. When that meant imminent death, Jesus prayed, “Not my will be but yours be done.” The Lord of all did not cling to equality with God. The truth is that we can only find true freedom by surrendering our spirit into God’s hands, as Jesus did.

OUR LENTEN JOURNEY

Monday Evenings in Lent During the season of Lent the Church calls us to inner conversion, to return to the Lord with all our heart. Over the course of the centuries, the Church has gone through periods of decay and corruption, and the scandals of the present mo-ment seem to be the latest example of this. Yet, in moments of inner crisis, the Holy Spirit has in-spired movements of reform and renewal in the Church. Matt Pozen will explore in this series, five key moments of crisis in the Church’s history, and the reforming movements that resulted. By look-ing to the past, hopefully we can gain courage and insight for journeying into the future.

Our Holy Land a Museum?

Please prayerfully consider donating to the Good Friday Collection in

support of fellow Christians in Our Holy Land.

As the number of Christians continues to decline in the Holy Land (now about only 1% of the population), the continued existence of programs that support Christians in Our Holy Land depends on the faithful financial support received from you, their brothers and sisters in Christ.

Without your support,

the Christians in Our Holy Land are forced to leave their beloved

homeland and Our Holy Land sadly becomes nothing more than a museum of Holy Sites.

Your donation helps maintain the holiest of shrines and provides charitable activities for the poorest of people in that area. Holy Land Franciscans also provide education to children, run parishes and provide liturgical, ecumenical and communications programs.

100 percent of the donations from

the Good Friday Collection support our fellow Christians

in Our Holy Land. It is because of you

that a Christian presence exists in Our Holy Land.

Thank you for your generous support!

God Bless!

YOUR HOUR HAS COME Pondering scripture, one can easily recognize

all the times Jesus squelched attention of His miracles and presence.

W hen He raised the daughter of Jarius from the dead, at the Transfiguration when they saw Him in His glory, when He was urged to go to the Jewish feast of Tabernacles but went in secret, in each case He told those involved not to say anything or that His hour had not yet come. But here we are, it’s Palm Sunday and in today’s Gospel, Jesus enters Jerusalem and He accepts the attention and cheers of the crowds surrounding Him. What’s the difference? It’s because His HOUR HAD COME!! It was time now to make the last public affir-mation of His claims. He knew it would lead to Cal-vary, the Resurrection, Ascension, and finally to our salvation and the opening of the gates of heaven.

So how does this apply to committing to an “HOUR” of Adoration? Maybe your HOUR has come.

Maybe He is waiting for your attention. During these times of much suffering and confusion, maybe it’s time to show your love and attention for Jesus as you read these words: “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord”, “Hosanna in the highest”, “Hosanna to the Son of David.”

Everyone has an “HOUR”. Begin yours TODAY. The Saturday 7-8 pm hour is empty

and needs TWO adorers. Many hours have single adorers who would love a partner.

To register, call Mary Lewis at 630 941 9173.

Each box top earns 10 cents for our school. If you have products with box tops in your home, please consider donating to Visitation school. Simply clip off the box top and drop in the BOX TOPS collection bas-ket. Thank you for helping raise money for Visitation School!
