Récemment diplômée de Hongik University à Séoul, dans sa Corée natale, la jeune JeeYoung LEE photographie l’invisible. Là où la photographie traditionnelle soumet à nos yeux des extraits du réel, l’artiste nous propose de regarder des images provenant de son coeur, de sa mémoire, voire de ses rêves. Bridée par les limites afférentes au médium photographique conventionnel, elle lui adjoint création plastique et performance théâtrale afin de donner vie à son immense besoin d’expression et d’interrogation.

Depuis 2007, elle construit des semaines voire des mois durant dans son studio de trois mètres sur six un univers né de son esprit, avec une minutie et une patience hors du commun, afin d’exclure toute retouche photographique ultérieure. Ces mondes ainsi matérialisés deviennent concrets; l’imagination est rendue tangible et l’image photographique de cette fiction atteste de sa réalité. Au centre de chacune de ces mises en scène, on retrouve l’artiste; ses auto-portraits ne sont cependant jamais frontaux car ce n’est pas son aspect visible qu’elle nous donne à voir mais bien sa recherche d’identité, ses désirs et ses états d’âme. Son imaginaire est pour elle une catharsis qui lui permettent d’accepter les répressions et les frustrations imposées par la société. Le temps alloué à sa mise en scène lui permet de méditer sur les causes de ses conflits intérieurs et de les exorciser afin qu’une fois vécus, ils deviennent à leur tour porteurs d’espoir.

Récipiendaire de nombreuses récompenses artistiques dont le Sovereign Art Prize en 2012, les photographies de JeeYoung LEE ont dors et déjà trouvées leur place au sein de collections publiques, telles celle du musée de la photographie de Kiyosato au Japon, la Fondation pour l’art et la Culture d’Incheon, ou encore au musée OCI à Séoul. En 2013, sa série Stage of Mind fut révélée au public international, et vue plus par plus de 500 000 personnes sur des sites tel Reddit.com en trois jours à peine. Elle a depuis été publiée par les plus grand média de tous pays, de la Chine aux Etats-Unis en passant par l’Angleterre, faisant de JeeYoung LEE la figure la plus prometteuse de la nouvelle scène artistique Coréenne.

JeeYoung LEERecently graduated from Seoul’s Hongik University in her native South Korea, JeeYoung LEE shoots the invisible. Whereas traditional photography submits extracts of reality to our eyes, the artist offers excerpts of imagery from her heart, her memory, her dreams. Restrained by the inherent limits of the conventional photographic medium, she adds plastic creativity and theatrical performance to it, in order to blow life into her immense needs of expression, and interrogation.

Since 2007, she creates for weeks, sometimes even months, a universe born from her mind within the confines of her 3x6 meters studio. She does so with infinite minutiae and extraordinary patience, in order to exclude any ulterior photographic alteration. Thus materialised, these worlds turn real and concretise : imagination reverts to the tangible and the photo imagery of such fiction testify as to their reality. In the midst of each of these sets stands the artist : those self portraits however are never frontal, since it is never her visual aspect she shows, but rather her quest for an identity, her desires and her frames…of mind. Her imaginary is a catharsis which allows her to accept social repression and frustrations. The moment required to prepare the set gives her time to meditate on the causes of her interior conflicts and so exorcise them , so that once experienced, they in turn become portents of hope.

Recipient of multiple artistic Awards including the Sovereign art Prize (2012), JeeYoung LEE’s photographs have already found their way into public collections, such as th Kiyoato Photographic Museum in Japan, the Incheon Foundation for Art and Culture, or even Seoul’s OCI Museum. In 2013, her series Stage of Mind has gained an worldwide audience, with over 500 000 views on websites such as Reddit.com in just three days. It has since then been published in the most prominent international media, from China to the United-States via the United-Kingdom, making her the most promising up-and-rising figureheads of the Korean art scene.
