Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life . . . And Maybe the World
A FUMC Sermon Series
In 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven gave the commencement address at the University of Texas’ graduation ceremony. In this speech he stood up and boldly proclaimed that there are little things that each of us can do every day to make our world a better place, and he said it starts with making your bed. This concept also applies to our faith. There are tangible things that we can all do that will make ourselves and our world a better place, and it all starts with… making your bed. Throughout the month of May, while we have so much for which to celebrate and look forward, we are going to consider some small changes we can make in our lives that have potential to impact our world in large ways. We hope you will join us as we celebrate our confirmands, the mothers and mother figures within our church, all of our graduating seniors, and as we remember all of those who have served our country valiantly.

Stewardship opens an avenue of thought that allows us to give without always questioning what we will get in return. Every one of us is talented in some way. Stewardship encourages us to use any talent we have to benefit an individual, the Church, or the community. “What shall I return to the Lord for all the Lord has given to me?” (Psalm 116:12) Jesus asks us to demonstrate our love for him through our generosity to others. In our everyday lives, he calls us to share our gifts of time, talent, and treasure with others. “While we have the opportunity, let us do good to all people – but especially to those of the household of the faith” (Gal 6:10).

Children’s Corner I grew up in church. I went to church twice on Sundays. I was also at any other activity during the week my parents thought I should be at. As the teen years rolled around, I did not want to go to church, but my mom would bribe me with whatever worked! Fast forward a few years later, I now have a family of my own and I value the local church and the impact it has made on my life. I memorized scripture in my Sunday school class. I quote it to myself when life gets tough. I memorized the books of the bible in order Genesis through Revelation. I am also pretty good at bible trivia! I made lifelong friendships, but most of all I built a relationship with God that has endured over the years. I now teach that to my children. My son, Andrew Cerda, on Easter Sunday, took his next step of faith and was baptized. I see it now! Thank you mom! I encourage you to bring your children to Sunday School and to church every Sunday we have some AMAZING teachers ready to invest in your child’s eternal life. – Christina Palm Sunday was a blast! Thank you to all who made it possible!
