MULTIPLE ORGAN FAILURE
Autopsic studies in patient dying from sepsis usually fail to demonstrate severe histologic lesions despite major organ dysfunction (e.g. acute tubular necrosis is minimal compared to the severity of renal failure, myocardial biopsies are normal despite major myocardial depression,….)
Hypothesis: Multiple organ failure may be a functional expression of a protective behavior of the organism in a hostile environement (hibernation).
“Many patients die when ware is withdrawn or not escalated when families, in consultation with physicians, decide that continued therapy is futile.”
