Wewillremember2005asayearfilledwithremarkablehighsanddistressinglows.Theyearbeganwiththelossof“Omega”,oursilverbackmalegorilla,onJanuary10,2005.Omegahadbeenherefor24yearsandhadsirednineoffspringattheBuffalo

Zoo.Shortlyafterhispassing,wefoundthatmoreroughtimesawaitedus. ErieCountysoonannouncedtheeliminationofallfundingforculturalorganizationsaspartoftheRedBudget.Todealwiththelossof$1.5millioninfunding,weslashedouroperatingbudgetby$885,000inearlyFebruary.Ourswiftresponseincludedsalarycutsforseniorstaff,theeliminationof20positions,areductioninoperatinghours,feeincreasesandthelaunchofourBridgeFund.Althoughwehad80percentofourcountyfundingrestoredamonthlater,westillhadtocontendwithadecreaseof$400,000fromcounty,cityandstatesources. Throughoutthesehardships,ourfriendsinthecommunitywerethereforus.TheBridgeFundbroughtinmorethan$126,000fromBoardmembers,friendsandconcernedcitizens.Fox29producedapublicserviceannouncementrecommendingwaysthatviewerscouldhelpclosetheZoo’sbudgetgap.TheWesternNewYorkFoundationprovideduswithanointerestloanof$300,000toassistwithcashflowuntilthefirstcountypaymentarrived. TheBuffaloZoowasabeneficiaryoftheJPMorgan/ChaseCorporateChallengeandreceived$10,600.RickSnowdenheldabirthdaypartyathishometobenefittheZooandcollected$25,000.HarrisBeachdonatedaHarleyDavidsonmotorcycleasaraffleprizeandraised$22,000.ColonyLiquorcoordinatedafundraiserwherebyaportionofproceedsfromthesaleofLorikeetSparklingWinesduringJuly,AugustandSeptemberwenttotheZoo.Finally,theZooreceivedagrantof$100,000throughSenatorDaleVolkertoupgradethecomputersystems. Ourdedicateddocentsalsoprovidedmuchappreciatedhelp!TheyvotedtoallowallrevenuefromtheZooTrunkprogram,aDocentrunprogram,togotowardtheEducationDepartmentratherthantheDocentOrganization.TheywerealsoinstrumentalinexecutingtheTops“ShopfortheAnimals”promotion,whichencouragedshopperstopurchaseandthendonateenrichmentandspecialtyitemsfortheanimals.Ourdocentscontinuetoassistwithouranimalenrichmentbyprovidingmanyofthespecialtyitemsenjoyedbythecollection. TheZoo’sproactiveresponsetothecrisisdidnotgounnoticedbythepublic,themediaandmajordonors.Wereceivedalet-terfromtheErieCountyCulturalResourcesAdvisoryBoard,commentingonhowwelltheZoohandledthereductioninfundingin2005andpraisingtheZoostaffandBoardfortheirleadership. Despitehardshipsearlierintheyear,wewereabletomoveaheadwiththecompletionofonemajorexhibitandtherenovationofanother.OnAugust6,weopenedSeaLionCovetocompletethesecondpartofour$6.5millionriverotter/sealioncomplex.Wedidexperienceatemporarysetbackwhentheexhibitrockworkwasfoundtobedefective,whichresultedinatwo-monthclosureforrepairsinthefall.TheexhibithassincereopenedandisabighitwithZoovisitors. ThehistoricReptileHouseunderwentamajorrenovation,andwearepleasedwiththeresults!LocalLaborUnion210donated$28,000worthoflabor,suppliesandmaterialstoremovealloftheleadpaintintheexhibits.DavidRock’sexquisitemurals,alongwithnewgraphicsandexhibitfurnishings,trulytransformedtheHouse. WecontinuedtomoveforwardwithdesignsforournewSouthAmericanRainforest,includingapprovalofthebuilding’sexteriorbytheNewYorkStateOfficeofParks,RecreationandHistoricPreservation(NYSOPRHP).Althoughseveralfeaturesoftheoriginalproj-ecthadtobescaledbacktoremainwithinourbudget,weareverypleasedwiththefinalexhibitlayoutandspeciesselection. Tohelpkeepvisitorsawareoftheseexcitingprojects,theZoo’snewwebsitewaslaunched.ThankstoEricLee,theZoo’sartdirector,andthewebsitecommittee,thewebsiteisnowmuchmoreattractiveandcolorful.Inadditiontofeaturingmoreinforma-tionandtheZoo’snewofficiallogo,thewebsiteisalsosecureforonlinepurchasing. AtDr.FrankRidgley’srequest,somepositivechangesweremadetotheZoo’svethospitalaswell.Remotethermometerswereinstalledintothewardsandquarantineareastoallowtheengineerstomonitortemperaturesintheroomsbywayofthehallway.Thispreventsthemfromenteringwardsthatmightcontainsickorstressedanimals,orquarantine,wherenooneshouldenterwithouttheproperattire.Thetworoomsweresealedandpainted,andthefloorswerethoroughlycleaned.Ward1servesastheprimarytreatmentareaforanyhospitalizedanimals,andthehallwayinthehospitalwasrefinishedwithanepoxyfinishtoprovideamoredurableandcleanablesurface.KaleidaHealthalsodonatedaminiC-Armtothehospitalthattakes“motionX-rays”toallowvisualizationofcertainproblemsastheyarehappeninginternally.NootherveterinarypracticeintheBuffaloareahasthistypeofmachine.Inaddition,wehaveawirelessmonitorsystem,whichallowsremotemonitoringfornursinginneonatesandbehavioralproblemsinotheranimalswithouttheinfluenceofsomeonebeingpresentwiththeanimal.Awirelessdigitalcameraisalsoavailableinthehospital,whichisdesignedtobeviewablefromanywhereintheworldovertheInternet.Whencompleted,itwillprovidewebcamcapabilitiesforourwebsiteandremotemonitoringofpatients. Themaintenancedepartmentalsokeptbusywithmultiplerepairsandimprovements.Theseatingareabythereindeerexhibitwasrebuilt,theroofofthegroundsdepartmentgaragewasreplaced,theoldcondorcagewasdemolished,theunevenpaversinfrontoftheW.I.L.D.PlaceTheaterwerepulledupandresetandanewbarriergatewasinstalledintheelephantbarn.Finally,thegorillaholdingareas,theinterioroftheChildren’sZoobarnandtheadminis-trativeofficeswereallrepainted. Despitearoughbeginning,weendedtheyearsurprisinglywell,withamodestoper-atingdeficitof$16,587.Theannualfundwasup$55,000,inspiteofhavingalreadyraised$126,000fortheBridgeFund.Wewereup$100,000inpaidadmissions,andmembershipincomeincreasedaswell.Wetriedtoholdthelineonexpenses,par-ticularlysalariesandwages.However,wedidhavetocontendwithmajorincreasesinutilities. Theyearwasastressfulone,butthankstoourBoardmembers,staff,volunteersandthepublic,wewereabletogetthroughit.We’relookingforwardtoabright2006!

SEALIONCOVESeaLionCove,presentedbyNOCOEnergyCorporation,openedtothepubliconAugust6,2005andcontinuestobeahitwithZoovisitors!Theexhibit,whichislocatedadjacenttoOtterCreek,recreatestheCaliforniacoast-lineandoffersvisitorsseveralopportunitiestogetface-to-facewith theZoo’snewest residents,CaliforniasealionsDallasandPocus.Otherexhibithighlights includenaturalistic rockwork, saltwater pools and extensivelandscapingofindigenousplants.Visitorscanobservethesealionsyear-roundbyusingthedramaticunder-waterviewingwindows,bridgesorstate-of-the-art220-seatamphitheater,whichwillhostdailydemonstrations.A variety of interpretive graphics surround the exhibitandserveaseducationaltoolsdesignedtoteachvisi-torsaboutthenaturalhistoryandecologyofthespe-cies.SeaLionCoveisthefourthexhibittoopenaspartofthefirstphaseoftheZoo’sMasterPlan.InadditiontofittingnicelywiththeZoo’sthemeofwater,thespecieshadbeenmissing fromtheZoofor25yearsandwastheanimalmostrequestedtoreturntotheZooduringseveral public meetings leading up to the develop-mentoftheMasterPlan.

REPTILE HOUSEAftersixmonthsof renovations, theReptileHousewasreadytoonceagainimpressvisitorswithitsexhibits—thistimelead-free!TheHouse,whichhadnotbeenclosedfor an extended time since its opening in 1942, wascompletelytransformedandofficiallyre-openedtoanawestruck public onNovember 5, 2005. The renova-tion project was originally launched due to peelinglead paint, which threatened to become an animalhazard. Due to the high cost of proper abatement,Zoo staff had been trying to come up with anothersolution.BuffaloZooPresidentandCEO,Dr.DonnaM.Fernandes,workedoutanagreement,withLocalLaborUnion210tousetheReptileHouseasatrainingfacil-ityfortheirAbatementTrainingSchool.AfterLocal210generously completed the abatement work, the ZoowasabletousethedonationsfromapartyhostedbyMr. andMrs. Rick Snowden to complete the update.RenownedmuralistDavidRockpaidcloseattentiontodetailandcreatedbreathtakingscenestodepict theanimals’naturalhabitats.Newglass frontsandgraph-icscompletedthetransformation.Visitorscanview23exhibits of animals from all over the world, includingturtles,snakes,lizardsandanAmericanalligator.

“Gauging Bite Strength at Different Gapes of Lions and Tigers”

Fluid filled, gauged, puncture proof, non-toxic hoses of different diameters were presented to lions and tigers in order to gauge their bite strength. Data collected will be applied to extinct sabertoothed cats.

“An Evaluation of Grip Morphology for a Foraging Task in Gorillas”Lisa Brooks, Ph.D. SUNY College at Buffalo as collaborator for William D. Hopkins, Ph.D., Yerkes National Primate Research Center Division of Psychobiology

The goal of the project was to evaluate the different ways gorillas grip and manipulate food to provide empirical evidence in a compari-son across different ape species.

“Electrocardiography in Elephants”

Susan Bartlett and Noha Abou-Madi, DVM, MS Cornell University

This study is assessing the most effective and accurate techniques to perform electrocardiography on elephants. Normal ranges for P-QRS-T complexes and the effects of body weight, sex, age and species will be established.

“Analysis of Gastric Phytobezoar Formation in Prehensile-tailed Porcupines, Coendu prehensilis”

Frank Ridgley, DVM, Buffalo Zoological Gardens

This study involves the investigation of a syndrome of gastric phyto-bezoar formation in captive Coendou prehensilis. The phytobezoars were analyzed by some independent laboratories for composition, and from this we hope to devise a medical alternative to resolution rather than surgical. This project was initiated in 2004 and continued in 2005.

“Scent Discrimination in Lions and Tigers and Its Implication in Kin Recognition”

Kelly Caffery, SUNY College at Buffalo Department of Psychology

Urine was used to determine if the cats can discriminate the scent as it relates to kin.

Theeducationdepartment’sprogrammingmaintainedastrongfollowingin2005.TheMentoringYoungScientistsprogramwaslaunchedfordisadvantagedseventhgradeBuffaloPublicSchoolstudents.FundedbyafederalgrantfromtheNationalLeadershipProgramoftheInstituteofMuseumandLibraryServices(IMLS),theafterschoolprogramranthroughouttheacademicyear.Mentorsandtheirstudentsworkedtogethertolearnaboutanimalbehavior,veterinarymedicineandwildlifeconservationthroughaseriesofweeklywork-shops.Thefirstyearoftheprogramculminatedwitheachteamcon-ductinganindependentscienceproject.Theprogramiscurrentlyinitssecondyear. AttendanceatZooSnooze,ourovernightprogram,wasup25%in2005,andCubClubbecamesopopularthattheZoohadtoofferthreesessionsperweektoaccommodatedemand.Thetraditionalone-monthteenApprenticeprogramwasreplacedwithaseriesofeightdifferentworkshopsrelatedtospecifictopicsaboutcareerswork-ingwithanimals. Onceagain,theCanisiusAmbassadorsforConservation(CAC)studentsenhancedZooprogrammingbyconductingshowsandinter-pretationsonotters,sealionsandelephantconservation. ThevolunteerprogramcontinuedtoassistinfulfillingtheZoo’sedu-cationalandrecreationalmission.In2005alone,672individualsvol-unteeredattheZoo,providingatotalof30,650hoursofservice.Theeconomicvalueoftheircontributionexceeded$550,000.

Polar BitesThisannualwinterevent,hostedbytheProZooBoard,contin-uestobeahit!Nearly750guestsenjoyedaneveningatRichRenaissanceAtriumsamplingvariousfood,dessertandbeverageitemsfromareavendorsaswellasparticipatinginthebasketandsilentauctions.Theeventnetted$30,000fortheZoo.

Wild WednesdaysTheseweeklysegmentsonWKBW-TVChannel7’smorningshowcontinuedtohighlightdifferentZooanimalsaswellasupcomingeventsandattractions.

Wines in the WildWhilethiseventsetarecordinattendancelastyear,numbersincreasedevenmorethisyearas1,900peopleenjoyedaneve-ningfilledwithfood,wine,beer,livemusicandbasketandsilentauctions.Thisevent,hostedbytheProZooBoardandWomen’sBoard,netted$50,000fortheZoo’sAdoptanAnimalprogram.

NFTA Labor Day at the ZooThisyear’sevent,presentedbytheNFTA,featuredabouncehouse,facepainting,gamesandanimalfeedings.Admissionwas$1,withcouponsavailableatlocalTopsMarketslocations.
