January and February were busy months. We had a bus trip to Orlando’s Holy Land Park, sponsored a concert by Don Wharton for Hope Seeds, enjoyed a Super Bowl Party, had our 25th jazz worship with Al Hixon, and went to the Sarasota circus on a trolley and included lunch before the show!

Charitable Outreach The Charitable Outreach Committee is hosting two Fairs: March 4th and 18th. The Shook Fellowship Hall will be filled with tables of information and guests from the numerous charitable organiza-tions our Chapel supports in many ways. Come and meet their representa-tives following the worship service and learn the importance of our gifts to them and their missions, as well as volunteer opportunities they offer for you.

Field Trip of Interest You are invited to join the field trip to travel to the Learn to Fish location and learn first hand about how this organiza-tion helps young women with substance abuse and other social problems by providing counseling, temporary resi-dence and other personal needs. Our church has supported this organization for several years and the Lord’s Ware-house has provided clothing and other items for their needs. Transportation will be provided from the Chapel at 10 a.m. on March 20th. Please sign up in Shook Fellowship Hall to be included or call the Chapel office at 941-383-6491. Events Committee

The “Events Committee” will meet on Tuesday April 24th at 1PM at the Chapel. It will be a planning session for next sea-sons social events. All are invited and encouraged to bring any ideas for next season. If you cannot attend and have ideas, please see Anne Summers or Vala-rie Evanko. New Members The Chapel welcomed new members on February 4. Pictured below area Maria and Benjamin Ianzito, and to the left are Chris Tiernan, Steve Cockerham and Jack Joyce. Missing are new members Libby and Mike Keenan.

Grounds Committee

Above are Gordon Lyons, outgoing Grounds Chair and Ingrid McClellan, in-coming Grounds Chair going over plans and changes needed for grounds around the Chapel landscaping design and other concerns surrounding the parking areas.

As noted by the President of the Board in the Chapeline, along with Bill Shuttle-worth, they are initially leading the effort to restore the Chapel parking lot to an ac-ceptable condition. Meetings have been held with a contractor and an engineering firm to finalize the design of what is be-lieved to be a long term solution to the current problems. A continuous curb around the perimeter of the parking lot, grading to ensure water flow to the bayou behind the Chapel, a fabric barrier be-tween the existing parking lot material and the new gravel, two sizes of gravel to form a +/- 4” layer for the parking lot, the grav-el will be of a harder substance so it will be less prone to ‘dust’ with use, hard sur-face parking area for disabled parking, and hard surface aprons for the entrance and exits are all being considered. Still to be designed is how all of this will coordinate with the existing islands that form our parking areas. A budgetary estimate will be received, then identification of funding options and preparation of a bid package for executing the work will begin.

Whenever you see visitor(s) as you leave a Sunday worship service, please invite them to the Shook Fel-lowship Hall.

Introduce yourself and others you know to help them feel welcome.

Guide them to the information at the Membership Table.

Invite them to stay for coffee, refresh-ments and fellow-ship.

We are known for our warmth and friendliness, but it’s up to each of us to take time to ex-tend a hand of friendship and helpfulness to our guests.

From Our Professional Staff Page 4

From the Senior Minister Looking ahead to March and April, our calendar appears mighty full. “Captain Craig’s Show-boat Spectacular” on March 11th should prove to be a fun time had by all!

I look forward to Howard Myers as our guest speaker at our Sunday morning worship, April 8th. He will be presenting his story “Blind Vision”, a very inspirational journey of his life.

And don’t forget to join us for our Holy Week services and celebrations.

This has been a good winter with wonderful worship, inspiring music by our choir and Bonnie, also lots of friends and new faces. Thank you to all who volunteer and help in so many ways to keep our Chapel the friendly, welcoming, and loving place that it is!

As our motto says, “Open Arms, Loving Hearts, Accepting Minds”; this is who we are!

Blessings, Rev. Bill From the Pastoral Care Assistant, MiMi Horwitz I came across an article I submitted to Chapeletter several years ago. The message is SO important for each of us to read and remember, that I’m repeating it now. The topic is, LISTENING, from The Cen-ter for Women Medicine, Florida Hospital: “When I ask you to listen to me and you start giving advice, you have not done what I asked. When I ask you to listen to me and you begin to tell me why I shouldn’t feel that way, you are trampling on my feelings. When I ask you to listen to me and you feel you have to do something to solve my prob-lem, you have failed me, strange as that may seem.

Listen! All I asked was that you listen, not talk or do....just listen to me.

I can do for myself; I’m not helpless...maybe discouraged and faltering, but not helpless. When you do something for me that I can and need to do for myself, you contribute to fear and weakness. But when you accept as a single fact that I do feel what I feel, no matter how irrational, then I can quit trying to convince you and can get about the business of understanding what’s behind this irrational feeling. And when that’s clear, the answers are obvious and I don’t need advice.

Irrational feelings make sense when we understand what’s behind them. So, please listen and just “hear” me. And if you want to talk, wait a minute for your turn, and I’ll listen to you.”

WOW, I needed to reread this! How about you?

From the Music Director

Captain Craig’s Showboat Spectacular

Sunday afternoon, March 11th at 4:00 p.m.

Wine and Cheese in the Fellowship Hall at 3:30 p.m.

A light-hearted musical revue in the LBIC Sanctuary that will take you back to an interesting time in American history when showboats traveled the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers providing entertain-ment for those isolated from “big-city living.” (Sound like Longboat?

During the early to mid 1800’s, families traveled relatively great distances by horse and buggy to reach the river banks where the showboats docked. Picnic baskets were probably packed with homemade delights to share upon arrival. A loud whistle and calliope music signaled time to board the boat.

The earliest showboats were literally “floating theaters”, pushed through the water by what were called “towboats”. By the mid 1800’s, however, steamboat design had improved, showboats were self-propelled by steam engines and large enough to host a full-scale circus with equestrian acts.

The Civil War brought an abrupt halt to entertainment on the waterways. The industry couldn’t be revived until 1878, but then flourished in the 1900’s. Showboats became larger and more elaborately designed, as chronicled in the 1927 MGM movie “Show Boat”.

Though the transportation revolution shifted people’s accessibility to other forms of entertainment, people continued to be fascinated by showboats. The most popular radio show from 1933-1935 was “Capt. Henry’s Maxwell House Show-boat,” a variety show hosted by the very humorous, likable “Capt. Henry.” (Starting to sound familiar?)

On March 11, you can take that step back in time and experience a 1900’s Showboat variety show, with the equally fun, likable “Capt. Craig!” Come join the festivities! Get a free boarding pass today!

Page 5 From the Board of Trustees

The Board welcomes Rick Skerrett Rick Skerrett was elected by the Board of Trustees in their February meeting to fulfill Steve Fuller’s term. Rick has been a Chapel member since 2009. He was involved with the Aging in Paradise Re-source Center from its beginning and has helped with the Dine Out events. He holds degrees in chemical engineering, economics, plus an MBA in market-

ing. Rick worked in the paper and textile research throughout his career. He graduated in ROTC serving in the infantry reserves. Claire and Rick live on Anna Maria Island and spend their summers in the mountains of North Carolina.

The Chapel Foundation The Chapel Foundation was created in 2009 to recognize contributors who have given donations of $10,000 or more to the Chapel in a calendar year. The Chapel Foun-dation plaque identifies past donors and is located in the Shook Fellowship Hall near the elevator. For 2017, the following donors are being honored: Cindy Kuehnel, Dr. Steve and Linda Shroeder, Betty and John Tilton, and Anonymous.

Past contributors are: the Arnold J. Simonsen Foundation, Dr. Elizabeth Colebrook, Mardene and Dick Eichhorn, Harry and Anne Ferries Memorial Scholarship Fund, Dr. Peter and Janice Mattina, Cliff and Alice Nelson, Dee and Dick Pelton, Buzz and Janet Schaberg, Fred & Ellen Schwaemmle, Lynda Jane Dias, Joan and Bill Roecker, Betty Jo and Fred Haas, the Noble Foundation, Jonathan Parks Architect, June and Fred Rohn, Trish and Bruce Kelley, Jack Goodrich, Jennifer Stiles, Jeff & Chris John-son, and three anonymous donors.

Please Help……Over a month ago the “Time and Tal-

ent Survey” was introduced to Chapel congregants and I would like to thank those who have responded with their choices of ways to assist. We rely on volunteers to carry

out every aspect of our Chapel activities. Please do not leave all of these tasks to be filled by someone else. The Chapel is a community in which we must all take part and are united through our volunteer efforts. I hope if you have not yet done so, that you will consider completing one of these surveys and returning it to the Chapel to my attention. You can pick one up at the Chapel office or the Chapel Information Table in Shook Fellowship Hall. Please don’t leave it to someone else.

On another note, I would like to encourage everyone to put the “Random Act of Kindness” cards to good use. A few people have passed along to me ways in which they were used. They are creative and get the name of the Longboat Island Chapel out into our community! Let’s live our affirmation on a daily basis and find ways to help others. Remember……actions speak louder than words! Let me know what you did! Thanks so much!

Susan Schaefer, Director of Volunteers

The Treasurer’s Report Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD) from an IRA

If you are over age 70-1/2, there are favorable tax benefits for paying your charitable donations from an individual IRA. When certain rules are met, these donation with-drawals count towards satisfying your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the year, with the additional bene-fit of being excluded from taxable income. The rules re-quire that the withdrawal check be paid directly to a chari-ty, such as The Longboat Island Chapel. Very Important: Checks disbursed to you, and then forwarded to the chari-ty, are not eligible for this favorable tax treatment.

The financial institutions that handle IRA’s have forms you’ll need to complete to request funds to be transferred directly to the charity. Should you need assistance in completing the form, I’d be happy to help.

Please consult with your tax advisor for more detailed in-formation on how QCD’s might benefit you.
