against Denise Owen and yours truly later this month. Entries for the Consistency Singles will open later this month, and all serious bowlers are urged to compete in this contest of skill.

Jazz Finale Our very last Jazz event will be a biggy!! On Sunday, 1st July from 2pm, the widely acclaimed 11-piece Great Gatsby Orchestra will play hot jazz and dance music from the 20s & 30s. It would be great to finish the season with a big audience - and yes, David, dancing is definitely ok!! I hope to see many Mosman members who love good music there for an entertaining afternoon.

GPS The Greater Public Schools 2018 season commenced in May, and saw a new invitational team, The Barbarians, replace Sydney High who were unable to field a team this year. Games are played on the 3rd Sunday of each month through to November, all at Mosman.

Quite often substitute bowlers are needed, and Mosman men members who would like to be considered are asked to place their name and contact details on the list on the Club noticeboard.

hat a busy month May was with so much bowls activity, highlighted with the commencement of the 2018 Pennants season. Pennants Due to the changed scheduling of this year's competition, regretfully we were able to field teams in just 2 sections, Grades 4 and 6. The 6s got off to a great start, winning their first 3 games before a narrow loss to St. Ives in Round 4, but getting back to their winning ways in Round 5 against the previously unbeaten Chatswood, and won well against North Manly the following week - they are currently equal top of their ladder. The 4s have had mixed results, winning 3 games and losing 3, but with Harbord well in front of the pack the playoffs seem unlikely for Mosman G4 this year. Club Competitions The Presidents' Trophy comp continued through May with some excellent games played. It is clear this mixed competition is popular with many members. Thanks everyone for taking it on so enthusiastically. The Mixed Pairs finalists have been decided - after some very close contests throughout, Diana Noel & Harry Evans will contest the final

Dalkeith/Nedlands BC Visit We enjoyed the visit of this Perth Club in May, when their party of 27 bowlers competed with the Mosman team which mostly comprised those who toured Perth late last year. The games were followed with a BBQ dinner which was prepared and served by a number of Mosman volunteers - many thanks to all those who assisted in so many ways. While the weather was a bit chilly in the late afternoon, the warm atmosphere throughout well and truly made up for it. Earlier in the week the Perth visitors were hosted at the Double Bay and St. Ives clubs. It was a pleasure to be able to r ec ip ro c at e t h e w o nd er fu l hospitality our touring party received from Dalkeith/Nedlands last November, and to welcome back former Mosman members Jan and David Steinberg. Etiquette I would like to thank all members for responding so positively to my request to respect those playing morning games by not approaching those rinks until the earlier games have finished. We have a generally happy club, and this will help to keep it that way. This month's Coaches Corner article covers expected etiquettes, and I urge everyone to read it.

Mosman Travel/Crystal Cruises Sponsorship I am excited to announce that Mosman Travel and Crystal Cruises will jointly sponsor a number of our bowls events for the next 12 months, starting with the Alex Macpherson Carnival in July. There will be more details in the July Newsletter, introducing these 2 prestigious companies - in the meantime please consider both when you are next planning travel, and always identify yourselves as Mosman Bowling Club members. Thanks to Jenny Hole and Martin McMurray for their wonderful efforts with this. Sponsorship 11 When bowling at Deniston last month, I saw their Carnival was sponsored by Lady Jane Funerals who gave all players a gift bag which included a $500 gift voucher to be redeemed against their next funeral - it was valid to 31st December 2018, so they were obviously hoping for some quick results!! Bruce Ironside So sad to hear of Bruce's passing, a lovely man and one of our Club's real characters. He gave so much to our Club as you will learn in Jeff Hole's obituary in this issue. Vale Bruce.

Congratulations to Sue Addison, Kay Balnaves and Di Gould for winning the Women's Triples final against Julie Hayden, Denise Owen and Jeannie Crease 24/15. It is Kay’s first time on an honour board and she is ecstatic and rightly so. Great to see Jeannie reaching the finals too as it is fantastic to see new names in these competitions. It is carnival season now that most of the serious competitions are over. There are lots of notices on the board. If you do go to a carnival please let the Committee know how you fared. All members love to know how our players are going outside the club and good luck to everyone who is going ‘out there’! Our Grade 3 Pennant team played against Seaforth in the Regional playoffs at Harbord on 9th May. The greens were very slick and Seaforth won the day. Congratulations again to Grade 3 on their District win. Grade 1 was won by Harbord who beat Neutral Bay convincingly. Grade 4 St Ives beat Mona Vale. The District Fours were played at Belrose on 28th May. Two of our teams went through to the second round but were then beaten, while a third team was beaten in round one.

here is so much bowls being played at the moment and it is a relief for me to have a day off to write this column. Loyce, Sue, Jenny, Julie, Jan, Kay, Tosh and Betty-Anne were all down in the Wollongong Region for the State Carnival playing two games of 18 ends a day for three days straight. Loyce, Sue, Jenny and Julie won their Section for the third time in three years but were unable to make it past the first round of the playoffs. A report on the Carnival appears elsewhere in the newsletter. The Harbourside Triples finished on 26th May with the top four teams playing in a final and then all the teams playing in an afternoon carnival. Mosman had two teams entered and the team of Robyn Novakovic, Jan McGregor and Jenny Hole came in the top four but lost the morning game and so missed out on a place in the final. Robyn Bower, Jacqui Bajtala and Loyce Davis also played and finished by winning their game in the carnival. Well done to all who played. Good luck to Denise Owen who is playing in the Champion of Club Champions Singles on 26-29th June at Ettalong. We are behind you all the way Denise!

A proposal for electronic signage on the Belmont Rd frontage was discussed and will be considered further. This would replace the signage at the entry gates.

It was agreed that all members should be made aware of etiquette expected of them on our greens and when visiting other clubs. Guidelines, including a briefing for the Bowls Office, will be developed and shared with members. With so much bowls activity taking place there is concern that payment of green f e e s a r e sometimes inadvertently missed, and agreed a reminder sign should be placed outside of the bowls office.

The annual c leaning of carpets and all chairs will be scheduled for the July school h o l i d a y s , i m m e d i a t e l y following the Carnival.

Discussion on the availability of Government grants for club development determined that we are qualified to pursue several opportunities, including the refurbishment of the Ladies Powder Room, and will proceed accordingly.

The weather report looked great for the State Carnival, held in and around

Wollongong from 21st to 25th May. Temperature in the low twenties and sunny.

We knew we would get fast greens as the two Mosman teams had played there

last year but what we hadn’t expected was the gale force winds. They certainly

made for very challenging conditions coming straight off the ocean with nothing

to protect us.

Loyce, Sue, Jenny and Julie had their first game at Towradgi, north of

Wollongong. The bowls flew down the green one way and then there was quite a

bit of compensation to be made going back. Apparently at Warilla, where we

played the second day, the greenkeeper had to water the greens on the Monday

to slow them down a bit! It was quite common to have 12 out of 16 bowls on the

bank.

Julie’s team fared well. We managed to win five out of six of our games and

once again won our section. Coming in the top 16 out of 192 teams was quite an

achievement but it was disappointing to lose in the first game of the playoffs. We

were beaten by a very good team from Milton Ulladulla who went on to win their

afternoon game and come 4th overall. It was fantastic to see Loyce, who was a

first timer to the event, embrace the carnival from the first game and come to

grips with greens that are very different to home soil. She enjoyed it so much she

is already asking if we have booked accommodation for next year.

Jan, Kay, Tosh and Betty-Anne didn’t win quite so many games but had a great

time too. We all met up

for dinner one night -

socialising is very

important - and they will

definitely be booking for

next year too.

Next year’s carnival is moving

back to Tuncurry but at this stage

no dates have been announced.

It would be great if we had

another one or two Mosman

teams to come with us!

A NOTE FROM VICTORIA

B r o n w y n a n d I thank the m e m b e r s and Board of Mosman B o w l i n g Club for t h e i r sponsoring a n d

support of us at the Blind Bowlers National Championships. It was wonderful for me to be with such inspirational people and to watch them in the competition.

The programme was pretty hectic—six hours of bowling every day, even though bowlers had occasional byes. We were at breakfast at 7:00am and in bed by 8:30pm each night.

I loved the way the guide dogs greeted each other with a tail wag.

The catering for about 90 people was all done by volunteers including a group of bikies. The meals were great.

On the last night Bronwyn was presented with a special encouragement award to much cheering and applause.

Ailsa

I would like to thank the Mosman Bowling Club members for the very generous amount of money which was raised for me to go to Melbourne to p lay bowls in the Nat iona l Championship for Blind Bowlers and for Ailsa Maccallum to come as my

Director.

I appreciated this gesture of financial help and all the good wishes and encouragement you have all given me over the weeks before and after the championships.

It was a very good experience. I learnt a lot and my bowling improved quite a bit in the week I played. I did win one game, even though there was very strong competition.

Thank you once again. Bronwyn Fitzpatrick

BRUCE IRONSIDE

On Monday evening 21 May the club lost another

of its life members with the death of Bruce Ironside

at the age of 93.

I first met Bruce in 1960 when he was my bosses’

boss at Unilever’s Balmain factory. He was the

venerated Senior Manufacturing Manager for the

Foods Division making such products as

Continental Soups, cake mixes, desserts,

margarines and a variety of other food products including Lipton Tea.

When I met him again in 2003 at Mosman Bowling Club it was 43 years later and he was

a well established and equally respected member of our Club. He made me very

welcome as a new member.

Bruce joined MBC in November 1986 and immediately established himself in the bowling

community within the Club. He was snapped up for the Board in 1988 and served for

four years. He then took over duties in the Bowls Office and continued arranging our

social games for 25 years until he was unable to do so for health reasons at the end of

last year.

Bruce was a selector from 1999 to 2002 so with that and his Bowls Office duties he has

fielded his share of complaints about selections.

He was made a well-deserved Life Member in 2007.

On the bowling front Bruce appears twelve times on the Club’s honour boards winning

club championships in Pairs, Triples and Fours as well as a Minor Singles title. He was

not a bad bowler in his time and he continued bowling well into his 90’s.

We will all remember his dry sense of humour and his banter often had a little edge to it.

But Bruce was always the gentlemen and very much liked by the lady members of the

club.

He had a particular affection for Nigella Lawson (I’m not sure whether it was just the food

recipes), although perhaps he would have preferred I kept that to myself.

Bruce has been a great club man and has given much to Mosman Bowling Club. We will

miss him.

Our condolences go to his wife Kath and all of Bruce’s family.

VALE BRUCE IRONSIDE

Following our successful bowls tour to Perth last November when we played friendly tournaments at Dalkeith/Nedlands, Mosman Park and Manning Bowling Clubs, Mosman was able to reciprocate when the Dalkeith/ Nedlands BC spent a week in Sydney. Following games at Double Bay and St Ives, the 27 Perth bowlers enjoyed a Friday afternoon on the Mosman greens in May where they renewed

friendships with our Perth touring group, followed by a delicious BBQ dinner. Competition between the 2 clubs was very even, as shown by John Rock's summation of the results -

"In the 1st match, Mosman won 4 rinks, Dalkeith 4 and 1 rink tied. In the 2nd match Mosman won 3 rinks, Dalkeith won 5 and 1 rink tied. Hence....on rinks, Mosman 7, Dalkeith 9 and 2 tied. However....the result is judged on total shots, or the "big board". And...in the 1st match it was Mosman 94, Dalkeith 91. But.... in the 2nd match Mosman 101, Dalkeith 108. Therefore.... Mosman 195, Dalkeith 199.

So congratulations to Dalkeith/Nedlands!" (And that's what you get when you put an academic in charge of games!!) Thanks Rocky. Thanks also to the many Mosman members who helped out in so many ways, and especially to the ladies who prepared the delicious salads and to BBQ chefs Glenda and John Weerden. The Perth visitors were blown away by our warm hospitality which more than made up for the chilly late-afternoon weather. All in all, a very enjoyable afternoon and evening!

In May our Club was visited by the newly-appointed Regional Bowls Manager to Bowls Australia, Brett Hughes. Brett met with several of our Board members, and reminded us of the many support activities provided by Bowls Australia. He also alerted us to a number of government grants that may be applicable to our Club in the future. Brett takes over from Chris Wallace who was a great friend to Mosman in the past. Congratulations to Brett upon his appointment, and we look forward to working with him.

There are two games of championship fours being played on adjacent rinks. One is the Men’s final and the other is the Women’s final. During the Men’s final one of the skips (perhaps it was Bruce) calls his third (Andrew maybe) up to the head after Andrew has played his first bowl. The other skip (maybe Scott) objects and contends this is not allowed. Umpire Peter is called. What is his decision? Co-incidentally during the Women’s match the same thing happens. One skip (lets say Julie) calls her third to the head after the third’s first bowl has been delivered and the other skip (Sue I think) objects. Poor old Peter is called again. What does he decide this time? In either case, if a player transgresses the relevant rule, what is the penalty?

by Jeff Hole

player who is about to bowl and to evaluate any changes that may occur in the arrangement of bowls in the head. Having a chat to them while a game is underway can be annoying.

If you are playing a social match on a rink next to a competition event, be aware that the competition has priority. For instance if there is a chance of your delivered bowl impacting a competitive bowl coming the other way you should wait for the bowler to deliver their bowl and for that bowl to be out of your line before commencing your delivery action. If you are walking from one end to the other you should ensure you stay on your own rink and do not move onto theirs.

So when an important match is underway, if you are not involved please avoid any activity that may disrupt the participants.

If you are scheduled to play on a rink after a competition match has finished be patient and stay well away from the rink until the players have completed their game, packed up and left the rink. They may occasionally run late but it is rarely a long wait.

If we respect these etiquette points it will avoid the occasional irritations that can spoil our days on the green.

SOME ETIQUETTE POINTSSOME ETIQUETTE POINTS

When players are involved in competition games such as Pennants, Club Championships, Club Competitions and Inter-Club events there is a need for them to concentrate, and for some players even minor distractions can be disruptive.

We have had a number of complaints from visiting clubs that some of our members arriving for social games have not followed simple etiquette rules.

If you are not part of the game it is good behaviour to avoid sitting or standing directly behind the head. To do so puts you in the eye line of the player on the mat and movements can distract. By all means watch the game but from the side of the rink or from some distance from the players.

When you are walking around the greens, either entering the club or moving from one position to another, be aware of any competitive matches that are underway and avoid walking behind the head when a bowler is on the mat. Stand still until the bowl has left the bowler’s hand before moving across their eye line.

It is a distraction to talk to a player involved in a competitive game. Players at the mat end will be concentrating on each shot as it is played and directors at the head are obliged to assist the
