Muhammad Aliis an American professional boxer, the greatest heavyweights in the sport's history. He is one of the most recognized sports figures of the past 100 years, crowned"Sportsman of the Century"bySports Illustratedand"Sports Personality of the Century"by the BBC.
At the age of 22 Cassius Clay won theworld heavyweight championshipin 1964 fromSonny Liston in a stunning upset. Shortly after that bout, Ali joined theNation of Islamand changed his name.
In fact, Clay was initially refused entry to theNation of Islam due to his boxing career. However, after he won the championship from Liston in 1964, the Nation of Islam was more receptive and agreed to recruit him as a member.Shortly afterwards,Elijah Muhammadrecorded a statement that Clay would be renamedMuhammadAli.
Ali had a highly boxing style for a heavyweight, epitomized by his catchphrase "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. Ali relied on his superior hand speed, dancing and circling opponents for most of the fight, holding his hands low and lashing out with a quick, cutting left jab.
