The Queen V ictoria Fountain is located on one of the corners of Merdeka S quare, not far from the textile

museum. It is an old ornamental fountain and drinking trough. It was imported into K uala Lumpur from E ngland

h e n r e a s s e m b l e d l o c a l l y i n 1 8 9 7 . T h e f o u n t a i n w a s o r i g i n a l l y m e a n t t o b e p l a c e d i n M a r k e t S q u a r e , b u t t h e

police objected to this plan on the grounds that it would obstruct the flow of traffic there. The fountain was built

o celebrate Queen V ictoria' s Diamond Jubilee. The ornamental centre piece of the fountain consists of eight

inged lions spouting water from their mouths. These represent courage. There is also a Queen V ictoria

Dataran Merdeka is situated in front of the S ultan A bdul S amad B uilding. It was here the Union Flag was

lowered and the Malayan flag hoisted for the first time at midnight (time: 12:00 A M) on A ugust 31, 1957. S inceh e n , M e r d e k a S q u a r e h a s b e e n t h e u s u a l v e n u e f o r t h e a n n u a l M e r d e k a P a r a d e ( N a t i o n a l D a y P a r a d e ) .

There are a few tourist attraction nearby, to name them : The Royal S elangor Club where the big field attached

hich is home to the world' s tallest flagpole, standing at 100m (328 ft.).

The Dataran Merdeka, or Merdeka S qaure was once a focal point and cricket pitchfor the B ritish colonial

presence in Malaysia. The structures bordering the Dataran Merdeka resemble the physical environment of

he colonists' native land. S ituated on one corner of the square is the S elangor Club, replicating the Tudors of

merry old E ngland. It was at this square in 1957 that the Union Jack was lowered and the Malayan flag

h o i s t e d , s i g n a l i n g M a l a y s i a ' s i n d e p e n d e n c e a s a n a t i o n . A 9 5 - m e t e r f l a g p o l e , o n e o f t h e t a l l e s t i n t h e w o r l d ,

T h e M e r d e k a S q u a r e s y m b o l i z e s t h e p l a c e w h e r e t h e i n d e p e n d e n c e o f M a l a y s i a ( 1 9 5 7 ) a f t e r 1 5 0 y e a r s o f B ritish rule was declared. E very year on A ugust 31, celebrated the independence (Merdeka Day), then the

area around Merdeka S quare closed to traffic. V ery Merdeka S quare stands filled with thousands of

M a l a y s i a n s w h o c e l e b r a t e t h e i r i n d e p e n d e n c e .

90-meter flagpole, one of the highest in the world, stands in the middle of the 8.2 acre site, hoisted the flag

lies in memory of freedom statement. E very now and then in the park festival, or an old fashioned game of

cricket played. The large field was in the past by the B ritish as cricket path. Under the Merdeka S quare is

P laza P utra, here you will find restaurants, shops and a large parking garage. Unfortunately, the whole is not

a s w e l l m a i n t a i n e d , a n d i t l o o k s a l i t t l e l a p s e . I n a d d i t i o n , p a r t s o f t h e u n d e r g r o u n d c o m p l e x n e v e r r e c o v e r e d

Merdeka S quare Flag

part from Merdeka S quare is the S ultan A bdul S amad B uilding, one of the most photographed sights in

K uala Lumpur. The K L-city tour and the Hop-on, hop-off bus in this spot. Merdaka S quare located along Jalan

Raja, about 10 minutes walk from the Masjid Jamek LRT S tation. From the center (B ukit B intang) a taxi will

bring you in 10/15 minutes to this highlight of the city of K uala Lumpur. W hen the meter runs, the ride will cost

o n l y a f e w r i n g g i t , t h i s d o e s n o t w o r k t h e n y o u p a y u s u a l l y b e t w e e n 1 0 - 1 5 r i n g g i t .

Merdeka S quare is easily accessible on foot from China Town. From P etaling S treet is a 10 minute walk to the

i n d e p e n d e n c e s q u a r e . T h e w a y y o u p a s s t h e s p o t w h e r e K u a l a L u m p u r w a s e v e r f o u n d e d , a t t h e j u n c t i o n o f

he rivers Gombak and K lang. Central Market (also a popular attraction) is about 5 minutes walk from Merdeka

S q u a r e .
