MIAMI, FL July 18, 2016 – The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County is proud to announce three new concerts for its 2016-2017 Live at Knight Series: Cuba’s BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB diva, OMARA PORTUNDO, celebrating her music and life with special guests on October 28, 2016; THE HAVANA CUBA ALL-STARS presenting “The Asere Friendship Tour” highlighting Cuba’s greatest musicians on November 25, 2016; and the biggest little orchestra around, PINK MARTINI featuring lead singer China Forbes, making its anticipated return to the Arsht Center on January 13, 2017. The Center is also pleased to announce CONCERTO FOR VIOLIN, ROCK BAND AND STRING ORCHESTRA, a high-energy, rock-n-roll experience with a string orchestra composed by R.E.M.'s Mike Mills for Robert McDuffie; and a Halloween weekend treat with DEATHSCRIBE MIAMI, a horror-filled night of live-action radio plays performed by Chicago’s WildClaw Theatre on October 27-30, 2016. Tickets are available to Arsht Center Members beginning July 19 and to the general public beginning July 22. The deep emotions that emanate from flamenco song unite with the intricate fury of dance in a unique performance that will exhilarate audiences with an up-close experience in the Carnival Studio Theater. The 11th anniversary edition of the festival pays homage to the city of Jerez de la Frontera, considered to be the birthplace of flamenco. Performed by the acclaimed escapologist Andrew Basso, he will hold his breath for over 4 minutes whilst attempting to escape from his underwater cell. This group of world-class performers take their cue from the showmanship of the great illusionists of the past - such as Harry Houdini – and pair it with a new and updated contemporary aesthetic, whose set and costume design lend the genre a theatricality and artistry that has rarely been seen before. This one-of-a-kind evening features icons from both the rock and classical worlds. Mike Mills of the mega rock band R.E.M. pairs up with Robert McDuffie, whom the San Francisco Chronicle describes as “a treasure — a musician of probing intelligence, a violinist of authority, and a force of great vitality,” to present an eclectic evening of works by John Adams, Philip Glass, and Mills himself. Inspired by the increasingly blurred lines between classical and pop music, McDuffie commissioned his longtime friend Mills to compose his CONCERTO FOR VIOLIN, ROCK BAND AND STRING ORCHESTRA. The piece expertly blends Mills’ prolific pop songwriting with McDuffie’s brilliance in the classical realm.

Perhaps the most cherished of all 19th-century ballets, GISELLE, created in 1841, has never lost its preeminence in the repertory. One reason among many: Every ballerina wants to dance it! And just about every great ballerina in history has danced it – from Pavlova to Ulanova, Fonteyn, Alonso, Kirkland, Makarova, and so many more. And why not? In Act One the ballerina gets to be a naïve, loving peasant girl who is betrayed by Albrecht, her aristocrat lover, and has a harrowing mad scene before dying. In Act Two she’s a ghostly Wili, raised from her tomb to join her spectral sisters in driving inconstant men to their death -- only to defy the Wilis and use the power of her love to save Albrecht from his doom. Act One demands earthly romantic charm and dramatic intensity; Act Two demands incorporeal purity concealing steely classical technique. A deep theme that binds the two acts together: the power of dance itself. Giselle is a girl who simply loves to dance but is constantly restrained by her mother’s concern about her weak heart – the heart that gives out at the climax of Act One. And in Act Two, the faithless men are forced by Myrthe, the implacable Queen of the Wilis, to dance on and on until they die.
