Hello everyone! Vibes is commemorating Mother’s Day this issue by featuring some very capable women. Now, we’ve all heard of entrepreneurs before… but mumpreneurs? That’s got to be something new to most of you. Starting and running a home business while being a stay-at-home mum might sound impossibly chaotic, but our residents (along with other 27,000 mums in Singapore) are making it work. Read about them inside! We also speak with one residents who can often be seen at the Pasir Ris Interchange. A little hint: He Sings. Happy Reading!

TALKS

Following the Singapore Budget 2016 announcement on 24 March

2016, Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC organised their own Post Budget Dialogue two weeks later to

summarise and reiterate to the grassroots leaders the key points of Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat’s speech. Some 300 GRLs and residents were at Punggol 21 Community Club that morning to engage with the MPs and to give their feedback on the budget. The MPs took up questions from the floor and had a fruitful sharing session on topics like employment opportunities for local Singaporeans, employment and manpower crunch issues for Small & Medium Enterprises, and also how to help Singaporeans cope with their livelihood through personal upgrading with Skills Future.

Organised in conjunction with World Water Day, Punggol’s first Waterway Day was held to encourage the public to take greater ownership of Singapore’s water resources. The event also served to mark the one-year passing of our late founding Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew and to honour his contributions towards water sustainability. Attended by over 1000 residents, many gamely participated in activities like Zumba, brisk walking, qigong, Kpop fitness and cycling. Some 100 residents also kayaked and helped to clear the waterway of trash. The event also featured an exhibition commemorating Mr Lee’s contributions to Singapore’s management of water. Describing him as the “architect of the Singapore Water Story”, DPM Teo Chee Hean urged the residents to remember Mr Lee’s “water legacy” by conserving and valuing water, and to always make every drop count.

A debate and talent competition was organised in April by the Sengkang Indian Activity Executive Committee to help Tamil students develop a greater appreciation for their Mother Tongue. Called Tamil Arumbu, the objective was to encourage them to use it more in their daily lives. Organiser Mr Muru said: “Tamil Arumbu is likened to strengthening the root of a tree, in which a strong foundation will mean that the tree will not collapse easily. The Tamil language needs to be promoted to ensure that the younger Indians won’t lose touch with their own culture.”

Beginning with a debate segment, some 18 students from Sengkang Secondary School, Punggol Secondary School and Serangoon Secondary School squared off over topics that were highly relevant to them such as “Is the use of smart phones good for students?” To allow students to showcase their other talents, a singing contest was also held to promote songs with meaningful lyrics written by well-known Indian poets.

A big congratulations to all Institute of Technical Education (ITE) students who received their well-deserved Edusave Awards in April! Punggol East’s own students arrived early and were well-dressed on a Saturday morning to get ready for the presentation ceremony. Their achievements were recognised under the following categories: the Edusave Merit Bursary, the Good Progress Awards, the Edusave Awards for Achievement, Good Leadership and Service (EAGLES), and Edusave Character Awards (ECHA). After accepting their awards from Mr Charles Chong, their families joined them on stage to commemorate the occasion with a picture that was later printed and given out to them. Well done students, and may this encourage you to do even better next year.

The Keep Singapore Clean Movement is a call for Singapore to move from being a ‘cleaned city to a truly clean city’. To support that effort, Pasir Ris East organised their own Cleaner’s Appreciation Day to educate residents on the importance of being environmentally conscious. Gathering at Block 207’s multi-purpose hall, it was a day for the cleaners to sit back while the residents did the hard work. Equipped with tongs and trash bags, they went around the neighbourhood to pick up litter from every nook and cranny possible. While that short stint cannot be compared to the effort our cleaners put in, residents felt for themselves just how laborious keeping the estate clean can be. To thank our cleaners, they were treated to lunch and presented a small token of appreciation. A lucky draw was also held and three people went back with new bicycles!

The Happy Neighbours Club is a ground-up initiative first proposed by a resident who felt more support groups should be formed within the community because they can bring out the kampong spirit of sharing and caring. The idea was supported by the Housing and Development Board and was spearheaded by Punggol Sapphi-Res Residents’ Committee who organised a get-together in April to ascertain the interest of the residents. The idea proved to be popular as many put their names down for different support groups (i.e. youths, young parents,

senior citizens) during the event. The gathering allowed residents to make friends over food, and even had a sharing session on good neighbourliness where

they fondly recounted stories of how their neighbours have helped them in times of need.

Jenny WeeOwner of TRESSES by Nails & Brows and MANICURED by Nails & Brows | Mama of

Ruth WongFounder of PhiloSOULphy | Mama of

A microbiologist by training, Jenny quit her teaching job upon arrival of her first child 13 years ago. The veteran mumpreneur later went on to distribute baby hammocks and children’s books, design baby slings and even started an online parenting forum, before getting into her current beauty business.

You were a mumpreneur even before there was such a term. How different was it back then and now? There weren’t many mumpreneurs back then and I didn’t have a lot of support. My friends (also mums) couldn’t understand my problems as a business woman, while my entrepreneur friends didn’t get that I had my children to consider. In terms of support and recognition, it’s gotten much better. There’s a platform of people who understand you, and will share their resources and experiences with you so you don’t feel so alone.

After 13 years, have your priorities as a mumpreneur evolved in any way? The main principle hasn’t changed – but you learn to adjust your expectations. For mumpreneurs, we’re both a mum and a business woman, so our definition of success hinges upon these two things. After some years, you tend to be less hard on yourself, so even if they (business or children) don’t meet your expectations fully, it’s ok.

Many mums like you end up starting businesses that’s completely different than what they’ve been doing. Any advice you can give from your experience?First, do good market research. Your service or product isn’t

automatically needed by everyone just because you feel there’s a market gap. Second, know when to pull the plug if the idea proves to be

unsustainable. Third, don’t go in thinking the

road of a mumpreneur will be easy! It’s more taxing than a full-time job because you have to manage your kids and business at the same time.

You’re passionate about community work and have found a way to give back with Nails & Brows.I feel that when you’ve made a difference in someone else’s life, that’s where you find value in your own existence. Even when running a business, it’s always been about serving the community. We’re a small neighbourhood shop but I feel we can do more. Every year, we adopt a charity organisation and have partnered with the Bone Marrow Donor Programme and Project Happy Feet. Currently we give free monthly haircuts to the residents at Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore.

You also wish to encourage more mums to do volunteer work! Doing community work has improved my outlook in life and has made me more resilient. It has helped me in my journey as a mum and I’m less myopic in my views. From my involvement, my children also get to learn about adversity, about helping

others and to be positive.

A portmanteau of “mum” and “entrepreneur”, mumpreneurs are women who set up and manage their own business in addition to being full-time mothers. These five mums* unanimously agree that what defines a mumpreneur is how she’s always a mother first, and a business woman later, even though she’s effectively both at the same time. Find out what these amazing women are involved in, why, and how they do it.

You were a successful writer before you had your child. Were there any doubts or fears you had transitioning into the role of a

full-time mum? When I first started freelance writing, one of the reasons was that I knew I was going to be a stay-at-home mum and wanted to make the transition before the child arrives. However, I didn’t expect to love my work so much that at one point, I didn’t feel like I wanted to have a child anymore because I thought it would mean having to give up my lifestyle and the work I came to enjoy. I was afraid of losing my freedom, afraid of having to let go of my dreams and passion.

Did your perspective change after your son was born? What has motherhood given you?Motherhood constantly offers me new experiences, and adds greater meaning and depth to my life. It enriches who I am as a woman. Becoming a mum was a new chapter of my life, a new stage of growth, and a chance to reinvent myself.

Life is very different now as a mum. I never imagined I could love another human being as much as I love my son. My son is literally a precious gift to me - he was born three weeks early so that we can both share the same birthday! I’m still pretty amazed till this day.

Adeline OonOwner of Adeline’s Loft | Mama of

Describe the form of mumpreneurship you’re involved in.I’m a one-woman show, tapping on my passion for jewellery crafting. My works are usually commissioned from clients who’re looking for bespoke lifestyle jewellery pieces.

What were your motivations for starting this business? My children are my world and my family is always my priority. Having this business allows me to be there for them, yet also have my own personal fund to sustain the costs essential to my jewellery crafting. In return, it helps me maintain my self-worth and cultivates positive emotional growth as a stay-at-home mum.

Is there a vision behind your jewellery creations? Everyone has their own personality. My vision is to create unique pieces that compliment the personality of its owners. Personally, I’m drawn to Avant Garde creations. However, I’m always open to experimenting with different styles.

You said it has taken you some years to understand the true meaning behind handmade jewelleries. What did you discover?Handmade jewellery, or other handmade products for that matter, are labours of love. As a handmade artist, I care and value what I do. They may cost more than mass produced pieces, but I would go the

extra mile to provide personalised services and build relationships with my clients – this is how I differentiate myself!

Are there any advice you’d like to give to mums who are aspiring blogshop owners?Truly, nothing is ever easy when you’re starting out. Whether or not an online shop is successful depends how ambitious you are. Personally, I believe that there’re three key ingredients to be successful.

Passion – Believe in yourself and love what you do.

Perseverance – Stay true to your beliefs and be resilient in overcoming obstacles. Success does not happen overnight.

Sincerity – Build a positive online presence, earn trust, and connect with your clients.

Currently a freelance writer and certified life coach, becoming a mumpreneur was Ruth’s way of fulfilling her role as a mum while doing passion-based work that aligns with her values. She now dedicates her time towards helping other women create a life of purpose, passion and abundance.

From motherhood, you eventually forayed into mumpreneurship with a focus on empowering women and their lives. Tell us more about PhiloSOULphy and your role as a life coach.About two years into motherhood, I started to feel a little restless. I wanted to do something else besides writing but had no idea what. I have a degree in social work and was a social worker for a few years. I’m drawn to work that allows me to make a difference in other people’s lives. At the same time, I also value time flexibility and creative freedom. Some of the things I’ve tried include becoming a rather successful mom blogger before eventually finding my way to coaching. I started coaching with a focus on helping mums. Today, I’m on a mission to support women to live their dreams by helping them to heal their past, gain clarity about what they want, and overcome their inner roadblocks such as fears and limiting beliefs so that they can create an amazing life they love and enjoy greater joy, purpose and fulfillment.

You believe strongly that mothers should nurture themselves and work on their passions even as they’re raising kids. Why so? Some mums give up their passion and dreams and begin to pin all their hopes on their kids. We should remember that our kids are not here to live our dreams. They should have the choice to pursue their own passion and dreams.

I think one solution is to find a balance between caring for your children and making time for yourself. It doesn’t have to be an “either or”. There’s always a way to having what we want. It starts with what you believe to be possible or not.

Before she had her hand in jewellery making, Adeline was the popular ‘Accidental Mom Blogger’ who chronicled her motherhood journey on her blog. The mother of two teenagers shares her growth as a jewellery artist.

HearttoheartKaren AngFounder of LearnMOJO | Mama of

Please share about LearnMOJO!I was a History and Social Studies teacher for eight years. LearnMOJO was a way for me to share my accumulated experience, and to equip students (and parents) with the resources they need to cope and thrive in their studies.

You began your mumpreneurship with LearnMOJO and as an online tutor. Why forgo the route of traditional tuition in favour of e-learning?I wanted to find a creative solution from whatever that’s available. Currently, I give both online and offline tuition but find e-learning effective because it’s flexible. Students have a lot of demands and might not have the time to attend scheduled tuition, so I craft a plan based on their needs instead. It’s not as impersonal as you’d think because we check-in pretty often through modes like telephone calls, video calls etc.

There’s the impression that online tutors have it easier because they don’t have to see the students. I can see why people would think that. In reality, there’s a lot of invisible work that goes behind remote learning. For example,

when marking a student’s work, I have to be very deliberate in the way I comment so that they can understand almost instantaneously as I don’t get to sit with them and get the instant feedback.

Now you’re actually pretty new to this whole mumpreneur concept. It was just two years ago you left your day job to be a full-time mum. Why?I decided to quit because I felt that my kids were at that age where they needed me more than ever; to teach them about values, about life and

just to watch them grow. While I really enjoyed my job, I had to ask myself what’s more important?

How did your children react?Karen: Matt (9-years-old), how did you feel when mummy told you I was going to quit my hospital job?Matt: Happy, because I can spend time with you. Karen: But won’t I nag at you more?Matt: At least you can bring me out… and also book vacations!

So far, working from home has been…Challenging and rewarding! I’m learning about myself, and learning to balance the different aspects of work and family life. I meet up with a group of freelancers to help keep one another accountable to the work we said we’d do. There are good and bad days, but I’m grateful for the opportunity and wouldn’t give it up for anything else!

Sophia LoyOwner of Petite Bakehouse | Mama of

Even after two years, residents still ask Sophia if her shop in Anchorvale is new. The ex-graphic designer confessed she used to “hate baking” because it was “a hassle”. Now, the expert baker has a legion of housewives joining her in her mission to serve petite handmade treats to the masses.

How would you describe Petite Bakehouse?Petite Bakehouse operates as on online bakery gearing towards preorders. We take on customised orders so it’s more of a specialty cake shop than a neighbourhood bakery. Our concept is to go small because because with petite bakes, you can have variety.

Why turn to baking? After my youngest child turned four, I started to wonder what I wanted for myself. I contemplated going back to publishing but with the influx of new software and young designers, it was overwhelming. As a full-time mum, I couldn’t do freelance because it needed me to be at the office, and I also didn’t have the software to work from home.

As my family owns a food business, I began toying with the idea of having my own shop. My intention was to make bread, but I couldn’t bake. So the course I went for taught me to bake bread, cakes and pastries, and I realised it wasn’t that difficult! My background in design was actually advantageous in terms of cake aesthetics.

Do you do all the baking yourself?I have part-time staff and many of them are actually stay-at-home mums. Having the mothers around is great because we have similar schedules. The shop closes between 12-4pm (after-school hours) and we use the time to tend to our children.

You also hold classes for anybody interested in baking. Many people in the food business are usually protective over their recipes but it seems like you embrace a culture of sharing and teaching.I tend to share and not hoard the knowledge to myself. When I go for courses, I come back and share with my staff if they’re keen to learn. My recipes are open for them to follow. The fact is the same recipe can yield different results from different people that’s why there’re cook books!

Petite Bakes has plans to engage the community in the coming months! Care to share? Our motto is “Bakes to Bond, Share Your Love”, so I’m looking to create sessions for families to come and decorate cakes or cupcakes together. That’s what I’m trying to do for the residents around here, so look out for it soon!

Two years ago, Karen left her job at a community hospital to be a stay-at-home mum to her two kids. If there’s one thing this new mumpreneur has learned, it’s that it’s alright to feel that things are falling apart sometimes.

For 28 years, Mr Poh Chin Kang was in a professional backing band playing at one of Golden Mile’s bustling nightclubs. He witnessed the dramatic rise and eventual demise of the nightclub when the karaoke scene began to develop. When the club eventually folded, he stowed away his beloved instrument and went to work full time as a coffee shop stall assistant for eleven years.

Two years ago, he received an almost peculiar piece of advice when he sought career assistance from the Singapore Workforce Development Authority (WDA): they said he should give busking a shot.

Seeing it as an opportunity to reconnect with his musical past, he went for the busking audition, passed it easily, and has been performing since 2014. Accompanied by his saxophone and Dizi (Chinese flute), he serenades the passing crowd just outside White Sands Shopping Centre every Sunday. In a day, he plays an average of 30 songs and covers mostly Chinese, Hokkien, Cantonese and Teochew classics. Every now and then, he gets a song request. If it’s something he isn’t familiar with, he would take the trouble to buy the CD and learn it.

“Busking is a profession and I put my heart and soul into it. Every day, I put up my best performance because this isn’t something I do to while my time away. I want to prove to people that buskers have standards too,” says Mr Poh.

Keeping up that standard and maintaining that level of professionalism requires plenty of behind-the-scenes preparation not many know of. From practicing, pre-arranging the music, recording and evaluating his performances, to deciding on the best type of music to play, a lot of work goes into making a good show. Luckily, his efforts have been reciprocated through different forms of appreciation.

“From a student’s 50 cents to song requestor’s $50, I’ve also received other currencies (Japanese Yen, Chinese Renminbi etc.) and fake money before. I’ve got a whole bag of these coins and give them to my neighbour’s children to play with.”

Mr Poh says busking brings to Pasir Ris an ambience you can’t get anywhere else.

“Without buskers, the mood is a little colder and more somber. Music makes the place livelier! Sometimes I see people gather on the steps of the MRT station to listen to me, and I feel a sense of accomplishment knowing I’ve done what I’ve set out to do – for others and for myself.”

Play is essential for children to grow well and lead happy lives, and simple toys can help with that. For that reason, the Punggol Coast Community Development and Welfare Fund decided to organise a toy distribution activity for children so they can receive toys that will aid in their formative years. A jumble of new and pre-

owned toys such as storybooks and board games were generously donated by the community and brought bright smiles to some 50 children. Dr Janil Puthucheary and the grassroots leaders hope that these toys can create wonderful childhood

memories that will last a lifetime.

My family and I decided on a last minute trip to Perth without

an itinerary in mind. Every day, we plan our route in the morning

according to my toddler’s timing. We have had many of our friends

tell us that Perth is boring. Shops close early and there is nothing

much to do. However, they were wrong! Perth is a wonderful place

especially for children and families. Indeed, the pace of life is slow

but the quality of life is not compromised.

We love how life is like there. The kids can interact with the animals

freely; they can also roll and run in big fields and green grasses. We

drove all the way to Cape Leeuwin and the view was amazing. We

saw dolphins swimming freely in a lagoon that was surrounded by

houses. Can you imagine waking up to dolphins swimming outside

your home? The food was good as well. They came in big portions that my

husband and I could actually share. Asian food can be found easily if

you have cravings as well. The fish and chips, crepes and honey cake

at Freemantle Market cannot be missed.

As we brought along a toddler, we visited numerous farms. From

goats, sheep, kangaroos, rabbits, chickens, koalas to ponies, my son

was able to see and touch them all at the farms.

Visiting the nature park to see the wild birds, kangaroos and koalas

was another eye opener. You can sit on the vast green grass and

have a picnic there while enjoying the sceneries. We even visited the

underground caves!

For those who enjoy shopping, there are many malls around the

city too. The factory outlets offer many good buys and you can get

clothes or shoes at dirt cheap prices.

Perth is a place we will want to go back again soon. With so many

places still unexplored, this gem of a city is worth more than just

a visit!

to Perth
