A: Atomic Structure of Materials - Prof J A Elliott(Michaelmas Term, 6 lectures)
The atomic structure of any material is the keyfactor in understanding its physical and chemicalproperties. In principle by knowing where theatoms are, and what they are, then any propertycan be determined. Moreover, by manipulating theposition of the atoms or substituting one atom foranother then the properties of the material can bealtered in a dramatic fashion - such design at theatomic, and microstructural, level is the key tomodern materials science. In this course weinvestigate the arrangement of atoms in materials,the periodic structure and symmetry of crystalsand how best to describe the crystal structure.
Anadolu University, Materials Science & Engineering Department, Eskisehir, Turkey
C Diffraction Dr H J Stone (Michaelmas Term, 6lectures)
Diffraction techniques are essential tools in theinvestigation of the structures of materials. This coursewill cover the fundamentals of diffraction and imaging byconsidering the wave behaviour of light, X-rays andelectrons. Beginning with light, the basic concepts ofdiffraction and interference will lead us to conclusionsabout the operation of optical microscopes, and explainwhy the resolution of such microscopes is limited to themicron-plus length scale. We will then consider X-rays,an ideal radiation source with which to investigate theatomic-scale structures of solids, looking at how X-raysare produced, how they interact with matter and how thediffraction patterns formed can be detected andinterpreted. Finally we will explore how electrons(considered as waves) can provide excellent resolutionand are also able to be focussed in to an image usingelectromagnetic lenses, as the course concludes with anintroduction to electron microscopy.

D: MicrostructureDr S Kar-Narayan (Lent Term, 12 lectures)
The properties of any material are critically dependent upon its internalmicrostructure, as well as the arrangement of atoms in the phases present. Thismicrostructure may consist of a 'simple' grain structure, or more complex,multiphase components. Examples include precipitates in the form of alignedplatelets, 'tree-like' growths (called dendrites), and regular plates of alternatephases - all of which may exist on length scales ranging from a few atomic spacingsto many tens or hundreds of microns. In this course, microstructure formation isexplained, based on thermodynamic and kinetic factors. The effects involved areillustrated with reference to metallic alloys and ceramic materials, and anintroduction is given on how microstructural control in such systems can allow fine-tuning and optimisation of material properties.
Anadolu University, Materials Science & Engineering Department, Eskisehir, Turkey
D: Structure and Characterisation - Prof C JPickard (Lent Term, 6 lectures)
In this short course of 6 lectures we look at a number oftechniques that enable a detailed characterisation ofmaterials at the nano- and micron-scale. We start with abrief revision of some of the key aspects ofcrystallography and diffraction before moving on to howx-ray diffraction can be used to determine not only theatomic structure of crystals but can also provideimportant information about the microstructure (e.g.strain, grain size, texture, thin films). A large fraction ofthe course is focussed on how microscopy can directlyreveal microstructures, firstly using optical microscopy(e.g. bright and dark-field imaging, polarizationmicroscopy, interference contrast) to reveal features atthe micron scale and secondly scanning electronmicroscopy that provides structural and chemicalinformation at the nanoscale. The final part of the courseconsiders different kinds of spectroscopy (sometimescoupled with microscopy), such as X-ray or Ramanspectroscopy, that can provide complementaryinformation across a range of lengthscales.

Imaging of Materials (New)
Principles and applications of imaging techniques for materials characterization including
transmission and scanning electron microscopy and scanning probe microscopy. Topics
include electron diffraction; image formation in transmission and scanning electron
microscopy; diffraction and phase contrast; imaging of crystals and crystal imperfections;
review of the most recent advances in electron microscopy for bio- and nanosciences;
analysis of chemical composition and electronic structure at the atomic scale. Lectures,
real-case studies and computer simulations.
Diffraction and Structure
Describes x-ray and neutron diffraction using Laue equations, Bragg's law, and the
reciprocal lattice. Use of Fourier transforms and series to establish relations between
intensity and distribution of scattering density. Applications to identification of
materials, texture, small angle scattering and Rietveld analysis. Determines structure
through diffraction effects: the phase problem, Patterson function, and direct methods
for phase determination. Quantitative description and refinement of atomic
arrangements.
